The starting point of this exciting new exploration of Picasso is not his life but his work, which is revealed as a series of interventions in the troubled history of early twentieth-century Europe. Christopher Green shows how these interventions are remarkable for the force with which they confront issues that remain vital and important for us today: race, cultural difference, modernity, sexuality and the discontents of civilization. The framework for Green’s exploration is simple, yet enormously rich in its implications: the compulsion found in Picasso’s work simultaneously to build architectures and to release himself from them. Architecture is used by Green to refer not merely to pictorial or sculptural structure, but to the architecture of knowledge and society: the structures of tradition, of racial, social and cultural distinction, of logic and of technology. He not only develops new ways of seeing the oscillation between order and disorder in Picasso’s work, but moves outwards from it to reveal how it confronted and challenged the architectures of orthodoxy.

Between spring and winter 1909, Picasso executed more than sixty portraits of his companion, Fernande Olivier. These works--produced in a variety of formats and mediums--exhibit a range of artistic approaches dedicated to a single subject that stands out in the history of portraiture. Published to accompany a major exhibition originating at the National Gallery of Art, Washington, this richly illustrated volume illuminates Picasso's radical reformulation of human physiognomy.

Containing eighty-two color illustrations and sixty-eight duotones, the catalogue explores the Fernande portraits and related works as a single oeuvre culminating in the magnificent Head of a Woman (Fernande)--one of Picasso's rare pre-1912 excursions into sculpture. By so doing, it allows us to examine Picasso's process in an unprecedented fashion. What emerges is a new picture of the artist pursuing his subject with obsessive repetition and struggling to resolve artistic problems during a time of crisis in his work. Also included are previously unpublished studio photographs that offer further insight into the conceptual nature of the artist's process. The text narrates the internal development of the Fernande portrait series, situates it within the broader history of representation, and considers the powerful impact of Cézanne on Picasso's work during this period.

Seizing a single extended moment in the early history of Cubism, this catalogue reveals Cubism's great achievement--its startling invention, its remarkable expressive power, and its profound formal and psychological implications for modern art.

A fundamental tenet of the historiography of modern architecture holds that cubism forged a vital link between avant-garde practices in early twentieth-century painting and architecture. This collection of essays, commissioned by the Canadian Centre for Architecture, takes a close look at that widely accepted but little scrutinized belief. In the first historically focused examination of the issue, the volume returns to the original site of cubist art in pre-World War I Europe and proceeds to examine the historical, theoretical, and socio-political relationships between avant-garde practices in painting, architecture, and other cultural forms, including poetry, landscape, and the decorative arts. The essays look at works produced in France, Germany, the Netherlands, and Czechoslovakia during the early decades of the twentieth century.

Together, the essays show that although there were many points of intersection--historical, metaphorical, theoretical, and ideological--between cubism and architecture, there was no simple, direct link between them. Most often the connections between cubist painting and modern architecture were construed analogically, by reference to shared formal qualities such as fragmentation, spatial ambiguity, transparency, and multiplicity; or to techniques used in other media such as film, poetry, and photomontage. Cubist space itself remained two-dimensional; with the exception of Le Cobusiers work, it was never translated into the three dimensions of architecture. Cubisms significance for architecture also remained two-dimensional--a method of representing modern spatial experience through the ordering impulses of art.

Many Pleasures Behind Severe Title.......2005-12-18

Designed landscapes are usually and broadly described as being either English or French gardens. The English sort seeks to group trees, foliage and flowering plants as if growing randomly without a perceived design, usually favoring twists and turns in the landscape, avoiding large vistas, favoring more intimate perspectives, rejoicing in cul-de-sacs, easily adaptable to any surroundings. Of course, it is all neatly crafted, art to conceal art. A French garden, rejoices in design, favors focus and symmetry, celebrates the subjugation of nature to the landscaper's master plan, opens up, indeed enhances vistas, expands the horizon. It is also dynamically related to the structure with which it is associated (unless it is a stand-alone park, of course). Such close interdependence is absent in English gardens, hence the latter's pliability and popularity.

French celebration of design in gardening could not have remained immune to the revolution in plastic arts centered in Paris until the start of World War II. Thus Ms. Imbert's marvelous book which analyzes through renderings, photographs and text the impact of cubism in particular but modern art in general in French garden design during the first part of the twentieth century through the thirties. The works of Gabriel Guevrekian, Le Corbusier, André Lurçat, Pierre-Emile Legrain among others are analyzed in great detail, establishing the profound links between garden design, the structure it supported, and the "outside" aesthetic which nurtured both architecture and landscaping. Thus it is instructive to notice in the excellent illustrations, among other things, how, when the perspective is high, garden paths, flower beds, etc. mimic observable planes in, for example, cubist painting. That it worked so well is one of the miracles of modern art; that it has remained so unheralded outside France was one of the casualties of WWII as well as America's marked preference for English gardens and general distaste for the architecturally adventuresome. Of course, to influence architecture and landscaping, art must be identifiably formal. When it comes to gardening, Abstract Impressionism brings to mind weeds.

The book excels in bringing all strands together in meticulous order and clear detail. The photographs, given their vintage almost exclusively black and white, are well reproduced, make their respective points, and provide much pleasure in viewing. Color helps create texture, so history has denied us full appreciation of the beauties discussed. However, there's a short section of color plates at the end, of either designs, watercolors or current photographs of some of the items discussed. Pity there is not more color material available.

Dorothée Imbert's work is palpably a labor of love even if it also started as a graduate thesis for UC at Berkeley. It is thoroughly annotated, and not at all pedantic.

A total page-turner with seamy details-- for example, she sent her son away to boarding school at a tender age because he got on (self-obsessed jackass) Malcolm McLauren's nerves. Even if you have no interest in her as a designer, this book is one fascinating read!

This book made me a fan of this writer, he has a totally original approach to biography writing. It is achingly funny and in some bits brilliantly insightful, in others it moves you along like a very peculiar adventure story, which is just what Mrs Westwoods life was like after all. I read that her brother threatened to punch Mr Vermorel on the nose over this book which says it all since this book is a punch on the nose for all those sycophants that are always surrounding the lady. In an interview I also read he said he write it to annoy the Guardian. I got more knowledge that seemed more real about the 60s here than all the clichés that usually are served up. Seems the only thing that swung in those legendary days was Mick Jaggers jockstrap!!!
