Product Description
The recent renaissance of interest in the history of dress and its cultural importance is celebrated in this collection of interdisciplinary essays. The sixteen contributors present on-going research into the study of the clothed body in ancient Egypt and the Aegean, Classical Greece, Rome and Late Antiquity. Through literary and artistic evidence and film, they discuss how dress articulates and defines an individual within his or her given society, at the same time highlighting common themes in scholarship, methodological differences between disciplines and periods, as well as contrasting definitions of what constitutes the clothed body. Essays discussing Aegean Bronze Age fashions, costume design in filmed biblical epics, clothing in Aristophanic comedy, Greek and Roman female undergarments, the symbolism of the Roman toga, and the spectacle of images of Byzantine dress, are just some of the diverse subjects covered in this study.

Book Description
What do tattooed Egyptian mummies of 2000 BC have in common with modern sub-cultural styles? From mini-skirts to skin decoration, make-up to hair, dress is imbued with symbols that reflect different meanings in different contexts. Calefato picks apart the multiple functions of modern dress, considering the psychological, cultural, spiritual and symbolic significances at play. What we wear is a vehicle for the (often contentious) expression of politics, gender and identity and therefore clothing is at the root of a complex set of messages, many paradoxical. Clothing may, for example, liberate through the pleasures of masquerade and at the same time "cage" or control the body. The Clothed Body shows how semiotics can provide a convincing template for understanding dress in a wide range of contexts.
Customer Reviews:
Fashions For The Mind.......2005-07-27
The premise of The Clothed Body is a simple one: fashion is a form of popular culture. This is nothing new. The presence of fashion magazines, fashion shows, and fashion museums tell us that something is happening here that goes beyond protecting our bodies from the elements.
From this obvious thesis, Paztrizia Calefato leads us into less mundane observations. She explores the meanings of tattoos, watches, sunglasses, Barbie, makeup, and trends in clerical dress, among other things. She uses movies, literature, and philosophy to examine the significance of clothing (or lack of clothing) and accessories. Sometimes it all gets very deep as she ponders the semiotics of clothing, especially when she turns to philosophers such as Roland Barthes and Jean Baudrillard to make sense of it all. As someone who is mostly superficial, especially when it comes to clothing, I had no qualms about skimming these esoteric sections and skipping right to the good stuff.
This included discussions of such seemingly trivial fashion choices as whether to wear a watch or not. Calefato thinks those who go bare-wristed are somehow rejecting the modern emphasis on precise time in favor of an imagined simpler era when we told time by the sun and stars. She cautions that these people are mistaken and that we are more likely to be heading for a Blade Runner universe in which we all have embedded microchips ticking off the time units. Yikes. It made me wonder how Calefato would react to Seinfeld's neighbor Kramer, who doesn't wear a watch simply because he can guess the time accurately enough for his vague purposes.
That made me think of the Seinfeld episode in which Kramer is bullied by people who want him to wear an AIDS ribbon on his lapel. After 9/11 it became de rigueur in the U.S. to wear an American flag pin on one's lapel. TV news readers wore them and even the President sported one a few days later for an important speech. Since then, he has never been seen in public without the flag pin. Will there come a time when the lapel flag can be abandoned, like the flags that flew from so many car windows for months after 9/11? Fashions change, after all.
On an even more superficial note, I was delighted to learn that what in America is called a fanny pack and in Britain a bum bag (because "fanny pack" would be rude in Britain), is called a "marsupio" in Italy.
More illustrations would have been welcome - there are none, other than the cover photo of a tattooed model. The Clothed Body contains material for many potential discussions such as the watch/no watch or flag/no flag arguments. What about dress codes? School uniforms? Veils? It seems a bit ironic that something as literally on-the-surface as clothing should be the subject of such deep thought.

Book Description
1889. Being the Book of the Illuminations. Partial Contents: Three Veils; Inspiration; Prophecy; Revelation; Old Testament; Devil; Regeneration; Christ; Christian Mysteries; Book of the Mysteries of God; Sin and Death; Seven Spirits of God and their Correspondences; Divine Image, or the Vision of Adonai.
Book Description
The book's premise is everyone is a nudist at heart. A brief history of nudism, naturism, dress and recent trends segues into near-future fantasy of an annual running event which triggers a quantum leap in social nudity and positive body acceptance. As remembered in an old man's writings from an enlightened future, mysteriously sent back to us, the book documents efforts to liberate ourselves from the shackles of compulsory clothes and make our world more body-friendly. By turn light-hearted and serious, the book sheds light on a subject in which every body has a vested interest.
Customer Reviews:
Thought Provoking.......2007-09-29
From the beginning of our lives we're put in clothes and taught to stay that way except under very specific, very limited conditions. Violaters will be culturally condemned and legally prosecuted. This book leaves one wondering why exactly that is. After being indoctrinated from birth into a certain way of thinking, it's extremely difficult to even consider an alternative way of being, and questioning the status quo can be very disturbing to many, for reasons they can't logically describe. This book, while short, is an entertaining and thought provoking read that leaves one wondering if maybe our mandatory clothes wearing attitudes and laws might be considered a little goofy by the objective outside observer. If you like to try on different points of view that question ingrained perceptions, read this book.
Look! Is that guy naked? So what?.......2007-04-23
The main premise of Body Freedom Day is that it is a book from the future (2056). Author Ward's clever little device makes the book a delightful read. He starts with a bit of naturist history, bringing the reader up to 2005. Then, he moves into future territory, marking the beginning of the Body Freedom movement as taking place in San Francisco (where else?).
I hadn't read far, when I noticed a little device author Ward used to add authenticity to the futuristic claim. It was a small affectation but I found it delightful. Since the book was claimed to have been written in 2056, certain more modern word forms were used--words like thru, enuf, tho, altho, nite, and the like. It makes sense. Why wouldn't words with useless extra letters eventually be changed in the future?
For a naturist, Body Freedom Day is a delight. It makes one long for the day when clothes will cease to be the mandatory condition of society in general. To be able to walk out the front door on a fine summer's day in the state one left the shower (only dry), to go for a walk, or to drive somewhere on an errand, would be a treat indeed. As you read this book, you start asking yourself, "Why not?" Why not be able to go anywhere without clothing if the weather dictates? Why not be accepted as a person regardless of our state of dress?
From the start, it's clear that author Ward is a public lands type of naturist. All of the references he uses in Body Freedom Day's bibliography are from The Naturist Society's N Magazine. In addition, a portion of the book's royalties will go to select body freedom organizations.
I don't necessarily agree with every premise author Ward makes in his extrapolation of the future but I surely had fun on the ride. The writing style is light and humorous and clips along at a merry pace. By the time you get to the end, you'll be convinced that a clothes-free society is not only a possibility, it's almost a foregone conclusion. Pick up a copy of Body Freedom Day to read on your next trip to the beach. Better yet, make it a clothing-optional beach.
Taking Naturism to the Steets.......2004-09-28
In the past couple of years, I've seen more and more fictional works appear addressing naturist (or nudist) themes. "Body Freedom Day" has been one of my favorites so far. Ward takes San Francisco's real-life Bay to Breakers Race (with all its zany clothed and unclothed characters), steps a few short years into the future, and crafts a nearly realistic scneario culminating in a cultural pardigm shift of epic proportions. The first half of the novel explores some highlights of naturist history, but the second half (the part set in the "future") unveils an approach to street activism that is insightful and motivating. It's a short, simple story, but if anyone wants a light read coupled with an opportunity to get inside the mindsets of naked activists wanting to take it to the streets, this book's the thing.

Book Description
In the historical novel "Clothed in Light" Elvis narrates his own story! The star chronicles his early years and rise to fame; stunningly, the book opens with Elvis describing his death and transfiguration, and he goes on from the perspective of soul to tell his story and reveal his unknown, spiritual side. "Clothed in Light" is not a channeling of Elvis; instead, the author utilized the technique of "spiritual profiling," including meditation, prayer, and guidance, to create this compelling portrayal of Elvis Presley. The star's first loves, his mother and father, Sam Phillips and Colonel Parker are put on stage throughout the pages of "Clothed in Light" as Elvis overcomes the poverty of his early years to achieve worldwide stardom."
Customer Reviews:
Very disappointed.......2001-08-08
I purchased this book based on a preview chapter I found on the author's website. I very much enjoyed the style and tone of the first chapter and was eager for more. Unfortunately, the remainder of the book is nothing like the first chapter. If you purchase this book based on what you read in Chapter 1, you will be sadly disappointed. Personally, I expected more of a "soul journey".... considering the book is subtitled "Elvis' Soul Journey". This subtitling, and the style of the first chapter left me expecting more reflection from beyond the grave... expecting "Elvis" to look back on his life and the decisions, right and wrong, that shaped it. There is none of this.
I was also very disappointed in the ending, if you can call it an ending. The words and paragraphs just stop. I read the entire book, waiting for something to validate the time I spent reading it. I finished the last page, closed the book and threw it in the trashcan.
If you're looking for a "historical" account of Elvis' life before the Dorsey Brothers show, this book will deliver that (I assume, of course, that all claims that I've read regarding the accuracy of the author's research are true). If you're looking for a "Soul Journey", you'll probably be disappointed.
I do not recommend this book.
Clothed In Light by Paul Jaffe.......2000-08-16
I loved this book! I was blown away by the first chapter and it just kept on surprising me. I don't think I've ever read, or imagined, anything quite like this. It is profound on so many levels and, yet, fun to read. You know when you wake up from a dream and you've had some momentous spiritual insight, but you can't retrieve it? Clothed In Light is like having those back, and on paper.
Unique retelling by knowledgeable writer.......2000-05-10
Interesting concept, Elvis speaking to us as if looking back on his life from "beyond the grave." A fast-paced, well written and unique retelling of the story of Elvis' early years. Because the writer knows the Presley story inside and out, the book works. I thought it might be an "airy-fairy" new-age approach to Elvis, but it's not. The language is down to earth, colloquial, very Elvis-like.

A truly great mystic.......1999-03-26
Anna Kingsford (1846-1888)is hardly known of today, and this is a pity. She was a mystic and visionary of the first order. This book contains visions and trance messages she received on esoteric topics. Some of her writings are on the level of true revelations. She was an esoteric or mystic Christian, but her views are far from orthodox. Her writings could be used to re-orientate Christianity and make it more relevant for the New Age.She gets closer to the true "Christian" teaching than virtually anyone else. This book should surely go down as one of the great mystic tracts.

Customer Reviews:
A Must for all Togashi fans.......2007-01-09
The first manga I ever read was Yu Yu Hakusho, that was 5 years ago. This series is what caused me to look for more and to be exposed to the wonderful world of anime and manga.
Frankly, I can not agree with the commenter below. I also am Christian, I am a huge fan of G.K. Chesterton and C.S. Lewis' Mere Christianity. And this series is perfectly, utterly harmless. If the commenter below has a problem with mythical stories and curses, I suggest they read "Ethics of Elfland" by G.K Chesterton.
That being said, if you know anything about Japan's religious history, you'd know that mainly they are Shinto and Buddhist. Naturally, this is reflected in their works, but this does not make it an occult work, nor does this mean it has occult overtones. Having 'powers,' as some may call it does not equal occult, and spirits do not equal occult. Shinto and Buddhism are not occult religious whatsoever. Honestly, I have read Grimm's Fairly Tales with more violence and magic, yet because they come from the Western Christian world, I doubt the commenter below would have problems with her daughter reading them.
As an actual review of this manga, I give it 5 stars. Sure, it may not be the most "in depth" series you could find, but it is well planned out with an interesting story, good character development and (in my opinion) good art. If you've read volume 1, volume 2 goes basically along the same lines. Yusuke, though outwardly stupid and short tempered, proves himself to be at heart a good guy. As in volume 1, volume 2 contains Yusuke's struggles to return to the world of the living. This volume is more of a precursor to the more shonen story line that begins in vol.3 and continues through various arks for the rest of the series.
So, buy this manga! If you liked volume 1, you'll like volume 2. Yu Yu Hakusho is great for all ages, and is a necessity for all manga fans, both veterans and newbies.
I don't recommend.......2006-04-28
My step-daughter, 13, really got into this series, much to my husband's & my chagrin. As with many Japanime & manga series, this one is chock full of ghosts, curses, mystical storylines, & occultic overtones. Though I know many young readers will disagree with me (& that's quite alright, as I've read these books & know what's in them), this series is simply not appropriate for young ones, especially Christians. If you simply do not want your child reading Japanime porn, but you're not concerned with the occultic issues, then you will probably be fine with this series.
If you're looking for something similar, minus the aforementioned details, check out the Serenity series by Realbuzz Studios. I provided step-daughter with those after reading them, & she loves them.
If no one else is going to write a reveiw, I guess I will!.......2006-03-08
Most people don't write reviews on each of the books in a manga series. Instead they go and write a review on the first book and use that same review to review the entire series. But were does that leave the poor individual volumes? I am here on the behalf of those unrated/unreviewed volumes!
This is going to be a short review, as I don't want to give away very much and it is a rather short book after all. This volume includes chapters 9-17 and is about Yusuke's further adventures as a ghost. A short synopsis of each of the stories: He saves a little ghost girl from hell, helps save a girl from a curse (sort of), gets saved by a girl (Keiko), and then helps a boy fulfill his dream of becoming a boxer. And that is all I can say without giving anything away. Now go read it!

Book Description
Witty, one-of-a-kind wedding book keeps the bride from going bonkers!
What causes a seemingly normal, well-adjusted woman to become obsessed and emotionally unstable after her boyfriend pops the question?
She's obviously gone bridal! Going Bridal is an actual syndrome, coined by journalist Li Robbins, who in these pages takes a sharp and witty look at what makes a bride go nuts and explains how to prevent emotional overload from spoiling the Big Day.
Filled with helpful, humorous stories from brides who have, regretfully, experienced Going Bridal firsthand as well as those who have narrowly escaped a memorable meltdown, this fun, chatty guide puts it all in perspective. Before it's too late, brides on the brink learn to identify and treat the four major causes of their condition, which include:
- Family-induced freak-outs
- Vendor-induced high-decibel venting
- Fiancé (oh, yeah, whatshisname)-induced fits
- Friend-induced frenzy
Forget the place settings and the perfect dress; this unique bridal guide focuses on the key ingredient for a successful wedding day--a sane and centered bride!
Customer Reviews:
Are they kidding?.......2006-02-07
I couldn't even get 5 pages into this one. It's like a guide for how to bully the people around you into following your orders for your wedding. Brides aren't idiots, OK? Many of us do not expect the world to revolve around our one big day. Some of us even want to focus on the marriage, not just the wedding. If you need help preparing for your wedding and your marriage, get The Conscious Bride. It's much better, and not nearly as insulting.
Funny and Frank.......2004-07-12
Stumbled on this book and found it so different from the other wedding books I've read -- in a good way. Read the other reviews and think Mr. Grumpy is just that. My fiance read parts of it and laughed out loud, and believe me, he's not usually into chick lit type stuff. It's pretty true to life and very entertaining. Only criticism is it isn't obvious right away that the beginning of chapters are fictional, but ended up liking those parts as much as the real life stories.
Let me out of here.......2004-03-10
OK, I'll be honest here - I'm a man and so perhaps completely unqualified to comment on this book. But my fiancée agrees with me that The Rules are a load of rubbish, so I feel emboldened.... I'm afraid that I can't take any book seriously that is written entirely in Cosmo-style gush (e.g. p1: 'I have three, count 'em, three friends getting married this year'). Sure, write a little magazine article like this, but a whole book? My skin started crawling after a few paragraphs. I'd have given it one star but I feel I should be open-minded enough to allow that Cosmo might have SOME value hidden to my masculine brain.
Refreshing!.......2004-02-19
Finally a bridal book that isn't full of "to-do" lists and etiquette rules! This is a bible for the indie hipster, full of humorous stories and personal experiences that guide, not instruct, the bride-to-be in planning her perfect day. Now all may read first hand how to avoid the pitfalls of family pressures and friends' expectations gracefully and with ease. Buy this book for all your girlfriends on their way to being hitched, you won't regret it, and they won't go bridal!
Very Funny -- Very Helpful.......2004-02-19
This book is a terrific wedding book for brides and their friends who've encountered the "tentacles of the wedding industry" and are resisting its grip. Also brides who have any "tensions" with friends or family. I found it very funny, and very helpful. I'm in the midst of planning my wedding and some of the scenarios were so familiar -- it was reassuring in that "you're not alone way." (Plus stories about things I'm happy not to be going through!) Going Bridal has practical tips about very emotional situations, and is a truly fabulous, fun read.
