This new edition has been thoroughly updated throughout to incorporate the many new resources and materials available to ceramists as well as the most current techniques and technical and safety information.
Customer Reviews:
A great book for beginners as well as seasoned ceramicists.......2002-01-06
A wealth of knowledge can be found in this timeless book that covers all the major aspects of ceramics.
For the novice, it covers the the world's history of ceramics. Discusses clay and glaze compositions and gives step
by step explanations of the various techniques from wheel throwing to hand building to making plaster molds for
slip casting.
For the advanced ceramist, there is good information of various kilns and their construction. It offers analysis of
several major clays, frits, and feldspars as well as other useful reference tables including some recipes for
glazes from low fire to high fire.
I first bought the book in '82 as a college freshman and it has proven a valuable aid ever since. It is on the top of
my "required reading" list for anyone interested in getting involved with studio ceramics.

Building Your Own Kiln: Three Japanese Potters Give Advice and Instructions
ASIN: 0812219457 |
Book Description
Any real education in ceramics must involve, from the outset, an appreciation of the source materials--the rocks around us. While good, throwable clay may be a regional commodity, there is no part of the world that will not yield potential glaze materials in abundance. Potters therefore need to know how to exploit the special properties of local rocks quickly, reliably, and methodically. This new revised and updated version of Brian Sutherland's classic book on making glazes from natural sources explains how to locate glaze material and construct, test, and use the glazes created.
Glazes from Natural Sources discusses rock types and other likely sources of supply, the making of test pieces, and the use of blend systems and constructions. The author also clarifies the Seger system of glaze presentation for those who, like himself, have found it difficult to grasp and apply. He covers, and supplies, formulae for glazes for all temperatures--from raku to stoneware and porcelain--and includes sample recipes. The book emphasizes careful planning and control to ensure results that are repeatable. This makes the science behind making glazes from natural sources both understandable and feasible.
Glazes from Natural Sources is fully illustrated, with diagrams of techniques demonstrated as well as images of the finished works of potters to show the results of these natural glazes. First published in 1987, this book is considered a classic by ceramicists. This edition includes a new chapter by glaze expert Nigel Wood.
Customer Reviews:
The title says it all.......2007-01-27
This book has lots and lots of excellent information as well as handy hints. If you want to start using found materials in your glazes, buy this book.
Excellent content, but could use some editing.......2007-01-20
First the cons: this book is beautifully printed, but the editing could definitely use some work. It has several typographic errors that should have been caught. The writing is also occasionally stilted, and it could be a little more organized.
That said, this is an excellent book, especially for potters and students who are interested in using local materials in their glazes but don't really know where to begin. It is thorough, and provides not only the basics (ie., how to do line-blends), but also information on calculating a material's specific gravity, Seger/unity formulas, building your own ball mill, and more.
A recommended read for potters and students wanting to know more about glazes.
Classic handbook for craft potters.......2006-02-26
First of all, I'd better point out that I am one of the author's sons. But as such, I know that this book was never written as a big commercial venture but as an attempt to record the wealth of information that my father had accrued through years of practical work in the studio.
When Glazes From Natural Sources was first published in 1987, it was rightly considered a classic textbook by leading potters and colleges alike on the science and practical techniques of producing one's own glazes.
Before his death in 1998, the author had been working on a new edition of the book, updated with a fresh design and packed with many new colour illustrations, for leading craft publishers Adam & Charles Black.
The revised second edition was published in early 2006 in the UK. An exciting development is that glaze guru Nigel Wood has written an extensive introduction to glaze-making as an additional chapter for this new edition.

Inspiring.......2002-12-29
This is one of my favorite books. It is not for a beginner. I do a lot of sawdust firing and find this book so inspiring and helpful. If you have some instruction on this firing technique and have an understanding of different clay bodies, this book will enable you to continue to experimenting and improving your results.
somewhat helpful.......2002-06-24
I was disappointed in this book. I was hoping to find detailed information on firing techniques other than traditional kiln. It did provide this information; however, no detailed information was provided on how to use/position tin to preserve glazing...this was the essential information I was looking for and thought the book would give detailed instructions on how to do this. The book did give good information on a variety of techniques used by potters all over the world, and it was very interesting...but not the "how to" I was hoping for. There was information on building outdoor kilns...and how to fire, which would be helpful to more experienced potters. Not exactly a book for beginners, like me.
More How-Do Than How-To.......2001-05-29
"Sawdust Firing," through interviews with potters, sets forth how those potters do, rather than stepping through how-to's. This is NOT a book for beginners, except to give a taste of the medium. Brilliant photos of potters' works, 'though mostly UK potters and the editor's own, with a spattering from other countries. The vocabulary is distinctly UK-based, with some terms explained in the glossary. For a US reader, "ceramic fibre" may not instantly translate to "fiberglass," and "bin" to "garbage can." Having said all this, the book is worth the money just for the glimpses of Duncan Ross' work.
Unglazed pottery made accessible.......2000-05-31
This text is a great reference for the potter beginning to work with unglazed firing techinques, and for the experienced potter seeking new ideas. There are slip recipes, definition explanations, and interviews with contemporary working artists. Beautiful photos intersperrsed throughout the text, both color and black and white, illustrate a number of technique results. A variety of kiln assemblies are described, including pit fire kilns and above ground models. Sawdust Firing is an interesting, easy read packed with information and a number of artist's personal preferences regarding their techniques. I highly recommend it to any individual curious about the art - this book makes unglazed firing very accessible, even to beginners.

Informative & Accessible.......2006-02-16
This will be a short review. But there's not really much to say: the book is informative, accessible, well laid out, well bound (it stays open by itself on), and in some ways, inspiring.
I recieved the book just today, and have only spent about 20 minutes with it, but as a relatively skilled potter, I have already gleaned some useful information, and inspiration from the book.
Highly recommended.

Excellent starter book, clear text and photographs.......2004-02-25
I confess that in my 30-second browse of this book at the library, I was not that excited about the book. Most of the photos are black and white and the book is very short. I decided to check it out anyway because I could, but I was sure that I would prefer the other book that I was looking at (Joaquim Chavarria's "Throwing Techniques") because of it's much better "shelf appeal" with glossier pages and color photo's. I read both books cover to cover and the Phethean book is much much better.
The pictures although not glossy, are very clear, and the text is clear and reinforces the pictures. In addition, he shows a color photograph of a completed piece that relates to the technique just demonstrated. He uses examples that are manageable for beginners and this book would nicely supplement a class at a local studio. (Chavarria's book is not teaching what most beginner classes in this country would teach.) Phethean also uses appropriate sizes of clay for a beginner. Some of the pieces he works on in the book are large to get a better view of what is being done, but he gives folks sound advice about slowly increasing the amount of clay. He also gives a table listing an appropriate amount of clay to use for a number of common pieces.
The techniques demonstrated in the Chavarria book are very cumbersome and advanced, I have taken many throwing classes and never encountered some of these techniques. The text is awful, and the authors' attitude is that you must do exactly what he says to master throwing. Consequently most of his text concentrates on where each finger should be and it is difficult to follow.
Phethean has a much more relaxed approach saying that finding what works is personal, he uses pictures to show the position of his hands, but uses the text to describe what the student should be accomplishing with each movement.
All in all, it is an excellent book that I would highly recommend to anyone interested in learning to throw.
The Complete Potter, Throwing.......2000-03-24
The book itself is not of quality binding, but the information contained within is. A good book for beginners and begin-again-ers. Processes are described step by step with excelent photos or line drawing examples.

Customer Reviews:
For the serious hobbiest and the professional potter.......2002-01-07
This is the book I have been looking for. I'm building a clay studio and wanted advice and tips on how to set it up. This is the only book I've found that gives really in-depth information on these topics. He also covers other topics you would want to know if you're going to be a professional potter.
Not only does he share some of his own horror stories (so you won't repeat them yourself!), but he also includes insets of the stories of other pro potters and their studios. Very helpful. He covers studio needs, selection, etc.; working with suppliers, vendors, contractors; equipment selection; and business practices, marketing and self-promotion (the hardest part of the business for me - and I think for most artists!). He also talks a bit about teaching and it's effect on your work (pro and con). The subtitle of the book says it all: "The complete guide to defining, identifying, and establishing yourself in the craft community".
This book is a must have for any professional potter and will be found very helpful even to hobbiests.
A thorough guide to getting started in the pottery business!.......2001-07-04
This book is so comprehensive and has answered so many of my initial questions regarding the start of a pottery studio and business. Steve writes in a language the layman and advance potter can both understand. The chapters are coherently laid out with the pertinent topics such as vendors, supplies, electrical needs, studio set-up, equipment making and purchasing, space needs, floor plans; the list goes on and on for the whole book. The back of the book has many vendors, suppliers and web links for reference. Although the web pages of many have changed, it is a great start on connecting with the pottery world. I highly recommend this book.
A path well directed.......2000-05-07
It is comforting to know that there is a book out there that is well written and primarily intended for people like me, who earn a living from clay. Naturally, most of us have already knocked our heads and come up with some soluations - discussed by Steve, but the confirmation of having made "right" decisions, etc., takes a load off and builds confidence. Had I been able to read a text like this six years ago, I would have had less bruises to my head and my ego! His other book, Raku: A Practical Approach is also a treasure which I notice is not listed here on Amazon - uhhmmmmm! Would be nice to have that as an Amazon selection.

What Would Wally Do?: A Dilbert Treasury (Dilbert Books (Paperback Andrews McMeel))
ASIN: 0740726633 |
Book Description
The former occupant of cubicle 4S700R at Pacific Bell seems to have made a go of this cartoon strip thing. What began as a doodling diversion that Scott Adams shared with his officemates has exploded into one of the most read cartoon strips worldwide. Dilbert and his cube crew now appear in 2,000 daily newspapers and are seen by 150 million people in 65 countries. Adams' Dilbert comic strip collections, treasuries, and calendars have combined to sell almost 20 million copies. The sixth Dilbert treasury, What Do You Call a Sociopath in a Cubicle? Answer: A Coworker, brings together all of the office psychos who have annoyed Dilbert and entertained millions over the past 13 years. This compilation pays homage to some of the most annoying and outrageous characters Adams' has ever drawn-characters he likes to call office "sociopaths."o Edfred the two-faced mano Anne L. Retentiveo Nervous Tedo Loud Howardo Alice and her fist of deathThis full-color treasury reinforces everything that makes the strip great by lampooning the people and processes of business. Adams homes in on all the quirky coworkers that drive us crazy in the corporate world. He has fun at the expense of office oafs found in workplaces everywhere-creatures like the Office Sociopath, who listens to voice mail on his speaker phone, and the Exactly Man, who punctuates everything with a finger point, exclaiming "Exactly!" The result is a book that leaves readers knowingly rolling their eyes and, of course, laughing uproariously.
Customer Reviews:
What Do You Call A Sociopath In A Cubicle? - A Coworker.......2005-09-14
Highly entertaining. Everyday frustrating events reduced to their truly accurate, but sad, essence. Drives home that everyone in the corporate world are in the same boat being guided by the unchallenging and inept.
Don't waste your money.......2005-08-02
Let me start off by saying that I love Dilbert and Scott Adams' work has made me laugh so hard that I have been reduced me to tears on occasion. That said, the only tears Dilbert fans will shed with this collection are tears of frustration. This book is an insult to Dilbert fans. All of this material has been published before. What's more it seems like they couldn't even bother to get an editor to look over this collection before sending it to the printer: some strips get printed twice in this volume. Scott Adams needs to apologize for foisting this collection on his fans.
This recycling is getting tiresome.......2004-01-21
Let's start this off by saying that I have always been a fan of Dilbert and it is one of the few comic strips I'll buy in collected form. That being said, the constant recycling of of material has hit a new low with this collection. Once again using previously collected material from 1989-2001, this collection does not even give the reader accompanying text from Adams, just a short intro that adds nothing to the reader's enjoyment. Are the "cubical sociopaths" separated from one another by anything other than chronological order? No! If you are a Dilbert fan and own the other collections, save your money. It's almost like this one was designed by the marketing department and put together at the last minute by Wally.
Dilbert deja vu encore again part III.......2004-01-19
Scott Adams has been producing his hilarious Dilbert cartoons for 15 years now, long enough for many of us to go from cubicle dweller to VP. This is very funny stuff, centered around the themes of co-workers from hell, such as the Office Sociopath and Mr. Goodenrich, the company president, and dysfunctional departments such as Sales. Unfortunately, there is nothing new here, it is all recycled from previously books. For the most part it is also a random collection of strips, with story lines from the go-go days of the 90's now seeming hopelessly out of date.
Let me summarize here. Like all Dilbert cartoons, this is funny stuff. Adams was a phone company engineer and knows better than anyone the lunacy of the workplace and he very competently translates it onto the strips. If you have never read Dilbert, do not start here. Go for the earlier books like Willy the Mailboy or Clues for the Clueless.
My first Dilbert Book. I liked it........2003-09-11
I have to say I enjoyed this book. I have always had a small fascination for the corporate satyre world of the 90s Adams introduced us to. I looked it up on the website and started reading the strips every day. With that, I went to the local Barnes and Noble and bought it. I liked it. I later read these reviews and they seem to be written by people with lots of experiance with Adams other books. This book was my first and it spans from 1989 to 2002, and I like it A LOT!! Its a recaap of all the characters. Through reading it you see the todays dilbert characters and adams drawing style evolve over time. Instead of a rip-off comp from all the other Dilbert books, consider it an introduction to the many faces of Dilbert and his coworkers.
