Persuasive and Poetic Writing On Photography and Photographers
In Between the Eyes: Essays on Photography, David Levi Strauss tackles subjects ranging from “Photography and Propaganda” to the imagery of dreams; from Sebastião Salgado’s epic social documents to the deeply personal photographic revelations of Francesca Woodman. The timely issue of photographic legitimacy is addressed in the essay “Photography and Belief,” and in “The Highest Degree of Illusion,” Strauss discusses the media frenzy surrounding the events of September 11th.
These essays have been published in a broad range of magazines, including Aperture, Artforum, and The Nation. David Levi Strauss is a writer whose visual and intellectual sensibilities are both acute and encompassing. His previous publications include Between Dog and Wolf: Essays on Art and Politics and Broken Wings: The Legacy of Landmines (a collaboration with photographer Bobby Neel Adams). The collection of essays in Between the Eyes reveals that Strauss’s thinking on photography is provocative, lively, and relevant.
Book Description
David Levi Strauss is a writer whose visual and intellectual sensibilities are both acute and expansive. His trenchant writings on photography and photographers have been collected for this volume from a broad range of magazines, including Aperture, Artforum, and The Nation. In Between the Eyes: Essays on Photography and Politics, Strauss tackles subjects as diverse as "Photography and Propaganda," the imagery of dreams, SebastiNo Salgado's epic social documents, and the deeply personal photographic revelations of Francesca Woodman. The timely issue of photographic legitimacy is addressed in the essay "Photography and Belief," and in "The Highest Degree of Illusion," Strauss discusses the media frenzy surrounding the events of September 11. As our world is shaped more and more by images and their slipperiness, what he calls a media "pandemonium" in its root meaning of "the place of all howling demons," we need a mind and voice like Levi Strauss's to bring clarity to our vision.

An anthology of stimulating, serious-minded essays about the interplay of photography and politics.......2006-02-06
New York writer, critic, and poet David Levi Strauss presents, Between The Eyes: Essays On Photography And Politics, an anthology of stimulating, serious-minded essays about the interplay of photography and politics, as well as hot-button topics and lasting social issues pertaining to both. A handful of chapters are not independent essays per se, but rather interviews with experienced photographers. From "Where the Camera Cannot Go" to "A Threnody for Street Kids", "Photography and Propaganda" and much more, each writing lays bare the core of photography and politics - or sometimes, the core of the author. From true stories of optimistic photographers struggling to use their craft to help the oppressed, to the stunning impact that cameras any layperson can easily use have had upon photography as a whole, Between The Eyes is an insightful, contemplative, tightly written set of discussions, illustrated with a handful of well-chosen photographic images.

REVIEW 1 of 3: Corona:NRO Reconnaissance Eye.......2000-01-22
Of the 3 books on this subject which I have so far read, this society press (ASPRS [ex-student member]) proceedings of a meeting (RAM, ed.), this is the most detailed and technical (includes geoid information (++)). Overall the best public book on the subject was also confirmed after after meeting with ex-DDCI Wheelon at LLNL. The appendices include redacted original reports and some marginally reproduced space images (++). Day's book has a chapter on the Soviet Zenit program lacking in this book (minor RAM--), and Peebles' Corona book has more chapters on the human side of the recovery and process (minor RAM--). The most accurate picture can be gained by having all three books (sorry, but more $ to Amazon). This book represents rare original source material from cold war history. The book also has a pointer to the breast cancer X-ray ID which the NRO/CIA claim to have released.

A memoir of a young man's relationship with his father and the importance of a father's faith to his son.

Relevant for many missionary kids.......2003-07-08
This personal story of a wounded missionary kid is a story so familiar for many missionary kids. Mr. Peters did well in balancing the "taboo" of revealing MK (missionary kid) struggles and respecting his father's faith and committment to missions. If your a missionary kid I encourage you to read this powerful book, and even more importantly if you are a parent of a child raised on the mission field.

I was fortunate enough to have Dr. Peters for a class in college. I, too, had been to Siagon in the years he was there. I, however, was older and had gone because of service to our country. I found this a very compelling read as well as some what tragic. Even though Dr. Peters wrote fondly of his father, I found it tragic that this man would put his wife and child in such harms way. I asked Dr. Peters if his father ever understood how profoundly that experience effected him. He quietly answered, never. I also discovered that he had passed away before Dr. Peters could tell him how it changed his life. At fourteen he was to experience the same shock that many in the military did, only with no one noticing. This is an excellent read and may explain better than any other book I have read how many of us returned from that war emotionally shattered.

A Spiritual Journey.......2005-11-07
I first received Raylene Abbott's, "Between the Visions" as a birthday present from a dear friend. Once I began reading, I was unable to put it down. This is a beautiful, uplifting and insightful book that I would highly recommend to anyone looking to explore their spirituality and lift their spirits. Raylene takes the reader on a beautiful spiritual journey and shows us that magic can be found everywhere.
Between the Visions.......2005-10-28
Raylene is a visionary with great insights into women's healing. She has traveled through many passages, in her book she takes you on her journey to inner and distant places. She offers the sacred adventure into sexuality which each of us long for in these times. It is a great read sharing with each that it is achievable NOW.
I have sense of purity.......2005-10-22
I have just finished reading this book. I have sense of purity, like the water of Mt. Shasta.
Inspired by this book, I am practicing to saturate my thought with beauty through my daily life. I am confident about letting go of my old relationships by practicing the wisdom of this book.
This book is the encouragement for me to live the spiritual life. Many thanks!

Review from Mt. Shasta Magazine
Vol. 5 Issue 1
By Michou Landon
Mount Shasta's own Raylene Abbott has birthed a
sweet and intimate memoir of one woman's ever-
deepening journey of healing, integration, Union
with the Beloved - human and Divine. Gently and
simply written, playful and passionate, it is at times
a poignant, powerful read.
Explanatory passages, which may seem very basic
to some, ensure that the "less spiritually traveled"
readers are included and even educated. Even so,
some of the content may command a considerable
spiritual maturity or at least openness.
Biographical narrative ties together the author's
visions, which have served to illuminate her regular,
3-D, human experiences. Often these visions contain
symbolism of buried cultures, reviving the timeless
truth and tangible relevance of images made cryptic
by time and tyranny.
Union is the cohesive theme, whether as Union of
Heaven and Human, Etheric and Earthly, Feminine
and Masculine, or the universality among all
spiritual traditions and practitioners. The gift of
Abbott's personal accounts is to illustrate this unity
more experientially than theoretically.
This is, however, as the author concedes at the
outset, an account of experiences whose true essence
and impact are beyond the realm of words. This is
why the level of each reader's spiritual openness,
humility and maturity can greatly influence how s/he
receives the content and message; that is, how much
s/he finds resonance and inspiration in the
experiences and how much s/he feels an awkward
spectator.
Tantric exploration features importantly in the
book; the candid sexual passages could challenge
some, which might not be a bad thing. True Tantra
holds promise for the salvation of many.
Overall, while this little book may not be for
everyone, it holds potential value for everyone,
whether to answer questions, plant seeds, or truly
inspire fellow travelers on the numinous journey.
Book Description
"Laughing Eyes" is a collection of letters, family photographs and memorabilia between legendary photographer Edward Weston and his son Cole that provides an intimate glimpse into the lives of the first family of twentieth-century photography - the Westons. Here is a personal account of an artist maturing into his role as one of the great photographers of the century and of a boy growing up through the era of the Great Depression and World War II.
Customer Reviews:
"Charming" is only the beginning.......2000-05-11
I never thought I would use the word charming to describe much of anything. This book earns that accolade and much more. Being a fan of Edward Weston as well as Cole Weston, I found this book to be the perfect window into both individuals. Paulette Weston has done a wonderful job pulling together this material from, what I am sure, is a vast archive of family information. It is always exciting to read letters from an age devoid of e-mail and telephone communication was still held with some amount of reverance. This book is a joy for fans of the Weston family and I would strongly recommend it, particularly to anyone who has read Edward Weston's Day Books.

We know of the music, literature, and athletic exploits of black Americans, but most historians of Afro-American influence on American culture never emphasize the modes of expression, vernacular, color schemes, and hairstyles that everyone picks up on. That's where Australian professors Shane and Graham White come in, with a long-overdue look at how black fashions were absorbed into U.S. and world culture from the arrival of the first slaves up to the 1940s. Using photos, illustrations, recordings, advertisements, and other sources, they catalog a number of influential black cultural phenomena, from the antebellum clothes of 18th-century South Carolina slaves to the famed "zoot suit" explosion of the 1940s. --Eugene Holley Jr.
Book Description
For over two centuries, in the North as well as the South, both within their own community and in the public arena, African Americans have presented their bodies in culturally distinctive ways. Shane White and Graham White consider the deeper significance of the ways in which African Americans have dressed, walked, danced, arranged their hair, and communicated in silent gestures. They ask what elaborate hair styles, bright colors, bandanas, long watch chains, and zoot suits, for example, have really meant, and discuss style itself as an expression of deep-seated cultural imperatives. Their wide-ranging exploration of black style from its African origins to the 1940s reveals a culture that differed from that of the dominant racial group in ways that were often subtle and elusive.
A wealth of black-and-white illustrations show the range of African American experience in America, emanating from all parts of the country, from cities and farms, from slave plantations, and Chicago beauty contests. White and White argue that the politics of black style is, in fact, the politics of metaphor, always ambiguous because it is always indirect. To tease out these ambiguities, they examine extensive sources, including advertisements for runaway slaves, interviews recorded with surviving ex-slaves in the 1930s, autobiographies, travelers' accounts, photographs, paintings, prints, newspapers, and images drawn from popular culture, such as the stereotypes of Jim Crow and Zip Coon.

The fun and mischievous daily adventures of head mutt Earl and his kitty chum, Mooch, again take center stage in Patrick McDonnell's sixth Mutts collection, A Little Look-See. As with McDonnell's previous collections, the always-adorable Mooch and Earl can be counted on for hearty laughs and endearing moments. The two share their charming perspectives through conversations they have when "their peoples" are not around. In A Little Look-See, we learn through Earl and Mooch that yes, animals do practice those irresistible expressions that melt our hearts, and we witness a not-so-dignified debate over the age-old question of who is cuter: dogs or cats? The creative style and classic charm of Mutts continues to earn McDonnell the admiration of loyal readers, prominent national organizations, and fellow cartoonists, as well as frequent comparisons to cartoon-strip greats such as Peanuts and Calvin and Hobbes. In 2000, McDonnell received the National Cartoonists Society's highest honor, the Reuben Award for Outstanding Cartoonist of the Year for 1999. With a following that includes 20 countries, Mutts has also garnered notice internationally, winning Germany's prestigious Max & Moritz Award for best international comic strip. Go ahead. Take A Little Look-See at the spectacular world of Mutts.
Customer Reviews:
A lovable gang of "Mutts".......2003-11-24
Patrick McDonnell's "Mutts" comic strip is quite an achievement: it's sweet without being cloying, heartwarming without being manipulative, and nostalgic yet always original. His simple yet eloquent artwork achieves a range of emotions; he may be today's most economical cartoonist. Even more remarkably, he earns laughs without resorting to the gross-out humour so prevalent in today's comic world.
Twice a year, McDonnell features a week of "Shelter Stories." They're bittersweet and sometimes heartbreaking, and serve as an invaluable public service.
I never tire of the adventures of Earl and Mooch. Of course, it helps to be a dog owner and animal lover! But I can't imagine anyone not being won over by McDonnell's lovable gang of "Mutts."
Need a "pick-me-up"?.......2001-11-11
If ever you need to cheer up, all you need do is ...open one of Patrick McDonnells "Mutts" books and read !!! The stories are great, you can almost hear these animals talking out loud. Be carefull though, I find myself laughing right out loud some times. These are great books, I can't wait for the next !!!
Quality has declined..........2001-10-05
I have become greatly dissapointed McDonell's work in recent years. In the first couple of collections, Mutts was right on target, witty and fresh, but now it seems that Mutts has become preachy, and cloyingly sweet. Most of us already have helpless guilt from reading newspaper articles on vanishing tigers, do we really need it in a comic strip? Even the artwork seems lacking, as if McDonell was late for a deadline and did a rush job. The Mutts creator definitely needs new ideas.
Yesh please.......2001-10-03
Mutts is cute, funny, warm, and every character is a sympathetic one, even Crabby and the guard dog. And of course, the "shelter stories" are guaranteed to touch the stoniest of hearts. In years to come, we will look back and say "How lucky we were, to have a fresh 'Mutts' strip in the papers every morning!" This book's only shortcoming is the presentation of the Sunday strips, which is why I'm glad that the Sunday collections are so beautifuly done.
A Little Look-See by Patrick McDonnell.......2001-09-05
Patrick McDonnell's wonderful cast of characters are funny, timely and touching. Who couldn't wish for an Earl and Mooch of their own?
Book Description
"¡Oye Broder, Get a Load of These Palabras!"
They're all Spanglish words -- and you can hear them on the streets of Miami, Los Angeles, Nueva York, and lots of other ciudades across the country where English and Spanish seem to blend and bend into a mind-boggling, very foni hybrid of two different languages -- or are they so diferente? Mira:
lonchando: Having lunch. "I'm lonchando, I don't wanna talk to him now."
yogur: Yogurt. "Este yogur doesn't really hit the spot when you're lonchando. Maybe I need to order a jambergue and some fries."
bacunclíner: Vacuum cleaner. "¡Aye! I think the bacunclíner just swallowed my earring!"
frizando: To make frozen, or freezing. "Turn up the heat, ¡estoy frizando!"
Before long, you'll be ready to graduate to the next level of Spanglish, with terms like pata de puerco ("pig leg" -- a new way to call someone an idiot) and Jamón del Diablo (deviled-ham product) and phrases like "¡:Boto la casa por la ventana!" ("That rocks!") The Official Spanglish Dictionary contains hundreds of terms to guau your friends and family, plus Spanglish terms of endearment, insults, and those all-important Spanglish pickup lines: "A ti no te duelen ni los callos" ("You're so fine, even your bunions don't hurt").
Customer Reviews:
Absolutely Hilarious.......2005-09-12
This book was really a God send. Some friends and business associates have all sorts of jelly palm squezzers or religious mantra calanders to help relieve stress during the course of a hectic day. Since I purchased my first copy of The Official Spanglish Dictionary it hasn't left my desk. Whenever the day starts heating up and getting crazy, I close my office door, kick my feet up and open this hilarious book to any page. There is no better therapy than laughter and wow do I laugh when I crack this book open. I have purchased at least ten copies and given them to friends and family. Hats off to the writers and I can't wait for the follow up.

Awesome! Funny! Add it to your personal library!.......2003-09-11
This book has become one of my favorites. I do not speak Spanish but can still fully appreciate the humor in this book. I just wish I had this book years and years ago when I first met and married my husband. You see, his father's family is from Cuba and this book would have helped me understand some of the sayings one hears in Miami. When I read excerpts and words from this book, my family-in-law adores it! They too think that it's an entertaining book. I find it's especially good for the children whose parent(s) emigrated to the USA from Cuba in the 1950's-1970's - "baby boomers" and such. Buy it & enjoy!
Don't buy it.......2002-11-18
The spanish language is only one, if it is in the Royal Academy Of The Spanish Language then you can consider you speak spanish, if not, dictionaries like this one are just [weak].
Un libro muy chistoso, pero un poco cortado........2000-05-07
This book is funny as hell, but it seems a bit short. Any Spanish-speaking gringo's going to get a kick out of this book. I thought English had some funny expressions, but a few of the lines out of this book are just so messed up I almost passed out laughing. Even some of the things that almost make sense are just so bizarre that you can't quit laughing. A must have for any Spanish student or bilingual Gringo.
A Must Have!.......2000-04-21
This book is truly like no other..If you're parents are Cuban, you can relate to the entire book... I felt as though the authors had lived with my family... It's hilarious.. You will enjoy this book and it's great to see that you are not the only one, whose parents believed and said all of the sayings in this book!
