In my opinion Arte Povera was the most interesting art movement in the 20th century. This book includes many art movements, explanations, artists involved, plenty of pictures and it is held together in a great quality book. I recomend this book to anyone right or left brained.

Book Description

In 1967 the critic Germano Celant coined the term Arte Povera to describe the work of Italian artists making use of simple materials to achieve their artistic statements in a reaction against the commercial pressures of the art market in the late 1960s. Artists associated with Arte Povera include Luciano Fabro, Giulio Paolini, Jannia Kounellis, Mario Merz, and Alighiero Boetti. The term has subsequently been used to describe work in a wide range of mediums, including sculpture, installation, Land Art, and performance.

In this fully illustrated survey, Robert Lumley provides a concise and accessible account of the phenomenon of Arte Povera. He identifies key events in the history of the movement and explains the cultural context that gave rise to it and its abiding influence on art today. This is the ideal book for anyone who wants to explore one of the formative movements in the development of contemporary art. AUTHOR BIO: Robert Lumley, a noted critic, is professor of Italian cultural history at University College, London.

Opening a Jane Smiley novel is like slipping into a warm bath. Here are people we know, places where we grew up. But the comforting, unassuming tone of her work allows Smiley incredible latitude as a writer, and her books are full of surprises. Good Faith, a novel about greed and self-delusion set in the economic boom of the early 1980s, is no exception. Joe Stratford is an amiable, divorced real estate agent in an unspoiled small town called Rollins Hills. He takes it in stride when a married female friend pursues a love affair with him; he is more suspicious when a high-rolling newcomer named Marcus Burns begins to influence the business affairs of the men closest to Joe. Nevertheless, the promise of easy riches draws Joe into one of Burns's real estate development schemes, and then, ominously, into gold trading. The steps by which a nice guy can be lured into betraying his principles are delineated so sharply in Good Faith that you wonder how Joe cannot see them. Although he never quite manages to understand what has happened to him, he's granted a moment of grace at the close of the novel, a second chance that has nothing to do with money, ambition, or the tarnished American Dream. Since we live with the legacy of the self-serving 1980s, Smiley's novel seems as timely as if it were set in the present. Penetrating, readable fiction by one of our best writers and social critics. --Regina Marler

                            Book Description

Jane Smiley brings her extraordinary gifts—comic timing, empathy, emotional wisdom, an ability to deliver slyly on big themes and capture the American spirit—to the seductive, wishful, wistful world of real estate, in which the sport of choice is the mind game. Her funny and moving new novel is about what happens when the American Dream morphs into a seven-figure American Fantasy.

Joe Stratford is someone you like at once. He makes an honest living helping nice people buy and sell nice houses. His not-very-amicable divorce is finally settled, and he’s ready to begin again. It’s 1982. He is pretty happy, pretty satisfied. But a different era has dawned; Joe’s new friend, Marcus Burns from New York, seems to be suggesting that the old rules are ready to be repealed, that now is the time you can get rich quick. Really rich. And Marcus not only knows that everyone is going to get rich, he knows how. Because Marcus just quit a job with the IRS.

But is Joe ready for the kind of success Marcus promises he can deliver? And what’s the real scoop on Salt Key Farm? Is this really the development opportunity of a lifetime?

And then there’s Felicity Ornquist, the lovely, feisty, winning (and married) daughter of Joe’s mentor and business partner. She has finally owned up to her feelings for Joe: she’s just been waiting for him to be available.

The question Joe asks himself, over and over, is, Does he have the gumption? Does he have the smarts and the imagination and the staying power to pay attention—to Marcus and to Felicity—and reap the rewards?

Good Faith captures the seductions and illusions that can seize America during our periodic golden ages (every Main Street an El Dorado). To follow Joe as he does deals and is dealt with in this newly liberated world of anything goes is a roller-coaster ride through the fun park of the 1980s. It is Jane Smiley in top form.

"It is hard to imagine how Smiley could have made Good Faith better. Like a sturdy, well-planned house, it makes room for everybody, and it ought to last a long, long time."

"Stolen intimacies, greed, corruption: There's much in Good Faith that strikes a chord today... Smiley's new novel is at heart a meditation on community and the way money can warp the social contract."

"Jane Smiley has produced an irresistible novel of bad manners, a meditation on love and money that Jane Austen might have enjoyed, if she could have handled the sex."

"[Smiley] is one of our most Dickensian novelists, her imagination is prodigious, her observations exact, and the wealth of fascinating people inside her head a national treasure."

I really did not like this book. I was going to say I hated it but actually the writing wasn't bad and I liked some parts but it went on way too long and it was pretty predictable. I read it through just because I was sure the ending would not be what I expected - but it was. What a disappointment.

3 out of 5 stars Nice historical snapshot, but thin on plot.......2007-03-17

I'm impressed by Smiley's versatility, but this isn't one of her best. Having only a teen's memory of the 1980s, I read this mostly for the descriptions of the money-flows-like-water atmosphere (which reminded me a lot of Silicon Valley in the late 1990s, a setting that I experienced firsthand). Her main character, Joe (Joey to his friends), is a genial guide to the era. And I was curious to see what would happen to him, though it was pretty clear from the beginning that he was playing with fire and should have stuck to being a successful small-town real estate agent.

But I agree with other reviewers that the midsection of the book goes nowhere fast, supporting characters are not developed as fully as they could have been (I would have especially liked to know more about "the Davids"), and the ending is abrupt. Smiley may have thought it would be too pat to reveal Marcus Burns's motivation, but I would have found it a lot more satisfying to have an answer, as opposed to several pages of ruminating from Joey about how unsatifying it is not to have an answer.

Worth the time to be reminded of an American mindset that seems to hit us every decade or so, but you're not going to spend much time thinking about the characters after you finish the book.

Pros - Readable. Has a "Definitely Could Have Happened" plot and general feel (and probably did, and probably still does). Doesn't get too bogged down in too many characters, ridiculous settings, etc.

Cons- Plows through in the middle section, unless you are really interested in real estate selling in the 80s (or now). Could have snipped 100 pages off of Joe's turn to the dark side. Pretty predictable as well, you have a good inclination that Joe is going to get financially screwed in the end, it's just by who and how bad.

I would say it's worth the time, but I am not sure about buying a brand new copy.

5 out of 5 stars Smiley's Forgotten Book Is One of Her Best.......2006-06-09

Jane Smiley has written so many good books now, that one good one or another is bound to slip through the cracks. I'm sorry that this is the fate of Good Faith, because it's a very good novel, and it's about the one thing that yanks every last American's chain: money.

Oh, sure, there's plenty more, too: love affairs, friendships gained and lost, betrayals, reversals, the Eighties real estate boom and bust, the great American get rich quick scheme, the lonely man . . .

This novel has more than a little in common with Richard Ford's Independence Day, but it's a good deal darker, and its canvas is a little bigger, and its aspirations are smaller but not so small as to inhibit pleasure, and not so big as to inhibit the plain-spoken and pleasing telling of the story.

4 out of 5 stars Meet Joe, the passive bystander.......2006-03-29

This is my first Smiley novel and I loved it! I thought she did a wonderful job setting up her characters and environment. I really felt I was in a rural community in the early 1980s before our world had succumbed to the "Pottery Barn" syndrome where we all have the newest doorknobs and furniture placed just so.

I was intrigued with the "likeable" real estate agent, Joe. In my opinion, he was as much to blame for what happened as was Marcus! He was interesting to watch because he evidently had a lifetime habit of not being involved or being passionate about anything! His parents were very passionate about their faith, JOe had no passion for God. His ex-wife was very opinionated, Joe simply complied. In real estate, he never seemed too caught up in closing a deal. He was successful at real estate because of his ability to stay detached from the deal! Even with Felicity, he sat back and rode out her affections and at the first sign of her backing off, she never heard from him again, even though he was crazy about her. Talk about the walking dead!

Now, this guy Marcus comes to town and he just passively goes along with all of Marcus' ideas? I think he was curious to see how far it could go even though he professionally saw that it was surely headed for destruction! What a weak man.

I think Jane Smiley did a great job of catching a small town man at a time in his life when he was ready for something interesting to happen, but didn't know how to start it.

I agree that the wrap-up of the crises was disappointing, but workable. All in all, I found this a gread story.

                                Book Description

Property rights formalize the relationship between individuals and goods. They form the cornerstone of the pricing, supply and efficient allocation of scarce resources between individuals. The Economic Foundations of Property Rights is an outstanding collection of some of the most important work from the founders of the field, including James M. Buchanan, Douglass C. North, Richard Posner, Armen Alchian, Lord Peter Bauer and Karl Brunner. It addresses the development of property rights, the effects of property rights on the allocation of resources and the link between alternative property rights and the production of wealth. Specifically, the authors consider the issues of democracy, law, transaction costs, the economics of exchange and the valuation of assets. The discussion considers property rights in the context of developing countries and transition economies as well as developed market systems. This comprehensive new source book will be welcomed by economists, particularly those interested in law and economics, as well as political scientists and those interested in public choice theory.

                                    Book Description

Recent years have witnessed an increasing interest in the environment and in environmental law, trends which have been reflected in academic work. This reader considers a cross-section of socio-legal work on environmental law, tracing its development over the past twenty years. It includes work from a variety of disciplines, theoretical perspectives and from an international scholarship. It aims to give a taste of the breadth and development of socio-legal approaches to one of the most important regulatory regimes in the western industrialised world the regulation of the environment. The readings encompass various legal approaches to environmental protection, alternatives to the law, and both domestic and supra-national issues. They also consider broader themes such as the interaction of law and science and the effects of criminalizing environmental offences, and indicate areas which future research could usefully address.
