Book Description

Based on extensive research in West Africa, Christopher Steiner's book presents a richly detailed description of the economic networks that transfer art objects from their site of use and production in Africa to their point of consumption in art galleries and shops throughout Europe and America. In the course of this fascinating transcultural journey, African art acquires different meanings. It means one thing to the rural villagers who create and still use it in ritual and performance, another to the Muslim traders who barter and resell it, and something else to the buyers and collectors in the West who purchase it for investment and display it in their homes.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction to African art and global art trade.......1998-11-18

This is a wonderful book which introduces the reader to African art in the context of the international market and art trade. As an African art collector, I learned a great deal about the "tricks" of the trade and the techniques of faking and market pricing. It is also fascinating to read about the lives of those who deal in African art, and how the trade impacts their religious convictions, as well as their personal and economic aspirations.

        Book Description

Walking Dreams explores the life and work of the legendary Italian shoe designer, an artist who revolutionized footwear by introducing new styles and innovative materials that called up associations with furniture, domestic objects and radical architecture. Ferragamo's work was always experimental, from cork wedges made from Italian wine-stoppers to stiletto heels, both of which he invented, to towering platforms in pressed and rounded layers, sometimes sculpted or painted, sometimes decorated with gems or shockingly tiny mirror mosaics. Over the years, Ferragamo patented systems for making leather substitutes, systems for producing raffia or jersey uppers, heels made of transparent bakelite, and wooden soles held together with traditional joinery.

1 out of 5 stars Disappointed to say the least..........2007-08-13

If you are looking for teen over-indulgence without apologies and shallow characters then this book is for you. The book is made up of three separate stories of three separate wanna be teen models that for no apparent reason are thrusted into the limelight of New York's hip and wild life. This book was surprisingly trite, bland, and plots which were a joke. I am an avid Julie Kenner fan and love everything of hers I have read....until now. Maybe I am too old for this book to enjoy it, who knows, but I love other books of this genera so I doubt this is the case.

5 out of 5 stars Courtesy of Teens Read Too.......2007-08-02

Vamp Modeling Inc. just held its annual model search, looking for the perfect girls to live up to the company's already high reputation. Thousands had tried out in various cities but only some of them had made it, and among them are three girls that stand out the most. All three know very little about the fashion industry, but they do know that they are about to enter into a world, or two, that is going to change their lives forever.

Olivia couldn't believe that she was actually chosen to be one of Vamps' models; all she did was send in a picture of herself. And now she is on her way to the Big Apple, as are the other girls who were chosen. All of it was so overwhelming, with all the paparazzi and photo shoots. And it became even more surreal when Olivia found herself in the tabloids. It's a good thing that her boyfriend, Damien, supports her, even if he is still living in Texas.

Veronika is the one model chosen that definitely stands out, just because she was the only plus-size one. Veronika had never been ashamed of the way she looked and was so glad that she could become a model just the way she was. Beating out all of those mean girls who thought she could never make it, back in Ohio, was just icing on the cake.

Sydney is far from being a bad girl, but she sure is labeled as one. Maybe it's her blue hair and nose ring that gives Sydney the bad girl vibe, but it was never like this. Sydney used to be the girl next door type, but when her father decided to leave the family behind for his girlfriend, the good girl gig was off. But Sydney only did this to get back at her father; unfortunately, he wasn't as fazed as she wanted him to be. Going to New York was the perfect opportunity to possibly have her father notice her again, and maybe get him to come back.

All three girls came to New York for the exciting experience. But the one thing they didn't know was that this experience had an ulterior motive. Who would have thought that Vamp Modeling Inc. really wanted to preserve the girls' looks forever by changing them into vampires? The name of the company itself seemed like an (un)dead giveaway. Being able to party all night long and never get tired did sweeten the deal a little, but for Olivia, Veronika, and Sydney, it may just get a little old.

Julie Kenner, Johanna Edwards, and Serena Robar are no strangers to the supernatural world, and the stories that they each provide in this very funny novel are both memorable and worth the read. Who knew that being a vampire model could be so much work? Fans of the authors' previous works and the vampire genre as a whole will not be disappointed with FENDI, FERRAGAMO, & FANGS.

I admit, when I began reading FFF, I didn't have high hopes. I've never been one for anthologies. They're often too short in all the wrong places. I was pleasantly surprised with FFF. Kenner's story came first. I enjoyed the uniqueness of the characters and was drawn into their world. Edwards came next. Hers, I admit, was not the best of the bunch, but was entertaining nonetheless. The ending lacked, but I enjoyed the remainder of the story thoroughly. Robar's was definitely the shining star of the bunch. I loved the characters and the obvious tie in to her previous three vampire teen books (which I also enjoyed immensely). It was witty, well-written, and I was able to relate to the characters quickly and easily.

I would definitely recommend this book. It was an enjoyable, quick read.

                      Book Description

THE ART OF S. CLAY WILSON is the long-awaited career retrospective of the most extreme of the Zap cartoonists of the late 1960s. A self-described "graphic agoraphobe," Wilson draws manically dense scenes of lurid mayhem that rank among the seminal works of underground, counterculture American art. It's all here, from the classic chronicles of the Checkered Demon to salacious stories about the pirates, prostitutes, and poets that inhabit Wilson's divinely depraved world.

5 out of 5 stars nice day for somethin'.......2006-08-12

The ART of S. CLAY WILSON is one hundred fifty-four pages of non-stop art. As always, Wilson's art is wild, visceral, violent, sexual, sincere, and enormously playful. The work is arranged chronologically, 1961 through 2006, and it's a helluva freewheeling ride.
This book opens with six short (1-3 pages) introductory pieces written by R. Crumb, Mark Pascale (Associate Curator of Pints & Drawings, The Art Institute of Chicago), John Francis Putnam (writing in The Realist), Charles Plymell (Wilson's first publisher), Geoffrey Young (Curator, The Geoffrey Young Gallery), and Bob Levin (author - his "Outlaws, Rebels, Free-Thinkers and Pirates" includes a chapter on Wilson). Most are funny, revealing, or sentimental (!), all provide some background information for the work that follows.
The book itself is a beauty, surprisingly understated in design and layout. The clean presentation complements the relentlessly detailed art. There are nice touches throughout, including checkered endpapers and a title page self-portrait.
You'll find very few pages of comics or stories in this volume. The ART of S. CLAY WILSON is a life-spanning collection of mostly full-page drawings and illustrations. If you're looking for Wilson comics, try Last Gasp's THE COLLECTED CHECKERED DEMON.
If you're a Wilson fan, snatch this book up. It's a good one.

                            Book Description

Remember what your mother used to say? She used to say a lot of things. So did all our mothers. Well, in case you forgot or weren't paying attention, here is the wit, wisdom, and worry of mothers of every race, religion, or ethnicity, otherwise known as Momilies. Smile, as you relive those years in an instant, with:
"You're not the only pebble on the beach."
"It'll never get well if you pick at it."
"Don't run with a lollipop in your mouth."
"Always put on clean underwear in case you're in an accident."
                            . . . and many more!
And for YET more, there is MORE MOMILIES.

                            5 out of 5 stars Incredible Literature.......2000-01-08

This is the most quality literature I have ever read. The collection of quotes is superb, and very true. Below are a few sample quotes from the book. Remember Mama saying these to you?

                            *Thirty-seven chews to a bite!

*If you don't eat your okra, you won't catch any fish.

*Clean your glasses- you can't be an optimistic with a misty optic.

*Always wear a coat and tie when you go on an airplane.

*Horses sweat, men perspire, ladies glow.

*When in doubt, write a thank you note.

Not only are there brilliant quotes like these (there are so many!), but mothers of our favorite actors, politicians, athletes, scientists, and authors, like Gertrude Stein, Joe DiMaggio, Liz Taylor, Thomas Alva Edison, and Ernest Hemingway.

Truly, Momilies has such great reading content for everyone to enjoy.
