                    Book Description

The Dark Shore heralded the arrival of an incomparable world-builder. The Shadow Eater reconfirmed the author's storytelling prowess and uniqueness of vision. With Octoberland, Adam Lee concludes his remarkable saga, The Dominions of Irth, with dazzling artistry and unparalleled invention.

The chill of autumn steals over the warm dream of creation. Is Winter the destiny of all worlds?

The Shadows of an exiled magic threaten a goddess' dream of light.

Darkness lurks at the heart of a city rebuilt from the ashes-as a weak-minded ruler and his renegade witch wife hoard technological trinkets and reveal a sinister sorcery.

Evil has launched yet another assault on Irth-and every sentient thing trembles in fear.

Across a vast gulf of galaxies, the dark reaches out to enfold the Earth itself-where skulking in the heights of Manhattan, an ancient magician seeks to stave off death by leeching years from the heat of his followers' blood. The sorcerer's reckless search for eternal youth has spawned catastrophe. For his spells have opened the gate to Elsewhere--encouraging invasion...and the end of everything.

                    4 out of 5 stars A neat conclusion.......2007-09-17

My expectations for this book were rather low, based on the other reviews and my feeling that the writing quality slipped at the end of book two. However, I was pleasantly surprised by this book. This volume was somewhat less epic than the previous two and basically split between two plotlines, one on Irth and one on Earth. However, this neatly tied up all the hanging character threads from the previous books and brought the story to a solid and unambiguous conclusion. The author didn't really have any new conceptual themes to introduce in this book and it read a little lighter for that. I still feel the whole series just reiterates themes from his other book The Last Legends of Earth (not written under the Adam Lee psuedonym). If you have read the other books in this trilogy, the ending is worth it. However, this is clearly a "wrap-up" book and cannot stand on its own.

5 out of 5 stars October Land may not be The Dark Shore but it is so GREAT!.......1999-12-25

I love everything about this book. I'm not one for giving away the plot, so you have to figure out that for yourself. If you read this for the plot or to see some story line well I won't give you that. What I will tell you is that I could not put it down.. Adam Lee is a great author that needs to be recognized...

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing 'Octoberland' lacks compelling story.......1999-09-07

'Octoberland' never lives up to the brilliant fantasy of the first two volumes of the Irth trilogy.

Author Lee uses a modified version of the awkward chapter structure he used in 'The Wolf and the Crown'. Lee almost completely abandons the world of Irth, focusing his story on The Dark Shore or Irthlings who immerse themselves in Dark Shore culture.

Where are the Spiderlands? Or the aelves? Those stories both had the potential for great fantasy. What was most lacking though was the presence of Lord Drev, a central character in book 1 of the trilogy. One can argue that his story has already been told, but his was a fascinating character that I, for one, would have liked to read more about.

3 out of 5 stars More disturbing than scary.......2004-01-06

Basically, this book is an athology of horror stories that have October or Halloween as their theme. The contributing authors include Jeffrey Thomas, William P. Simmons, Scott Thomas, Charlee Jacob, and Stephen Mark Rainey. To me, all of this implied that there would be a bunch of nice, scary Halloween stories in the book. Ummm...nope, not really. I found most of the stories to be more disturbing than scary. And not Jack Ketchum or Edward Lee disturbing where you are unnerved for quite a while afterwards. Don't get me wrong, there were a few good stories in here (I thought): "Post #153" by Jeffrey Thomas, in which a VFW is surrounded by some familiar apparitions was quite chilling. I also enjoyed "The Halloween Boy" by William P. Simmons, which was about a very strange little boy --- though I would say that it was far more haunting than scary. All in all, though I enjoyed some of the stories in this anthology, I found it overall to be a rather disappointing read.

                        Book Description

Ethan Fortune was simple salesman -- knowledgeable and civilized . . . a sophisticated traveler between many worlds. But he had certainly never thought of himself as a hero.

Skua September, on the other hand, never thought of himself as anything else.

A matched pair, if ever there was one!

When the two of them were suddenly stranded on a deadly frozen world, Ethan Fortune incredibly found himself cast in the role of Leader.

And he didn't find that at all amusing . . .

                        5 out of 5 stars beautiful cover.......2006-01-26

I have always loved the cover of this novel. Usually covers don't really add to the story inside, or worse yet, aren't even done for that particular novel. But this cover, which wraps around to the backside, takes you right into the world of Tran-ky-ky, and illustrates one of the most memorable moments in the novel.

I love this novell. Hey, the dialogue is poorly written, and the novel goes on a few chapters beyond the point where it should logically (and strongly) have ended. BUT IT IS STILL GREAT! there are some elements in the novel that are remeniscent of Dune, but although Dune is a much more sophisticated and artistic novel, I've only read it twice, but I've read Icerigger at least twenty times since I bought it as a teenager. The plot is totally engrossing.

I used to fantasize that if I ever become a director, I'd want to make this novel into a movie. That will probably never happen, so i will just have to settle for reading it another twenty times!

5 out of 5 stars Icerigger is a swashbuckling tale full of heroes and battles.......2001-09-19

This is a kinda obscure out-of-print (but easy to find) novel from 1974. Another Listmania selection (as most of my recent choices are), and as usual, very enjoyable. Icerigger is a swashbuckling tale full of heroes and battles, where 6 people crash land into a medieval civilization just in time for them to fight a war (of sorts). This is purely a story, there is no deeper meaning and nothing to think much about, but a very solid story indeed, what! The first in a trilogy.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorites.......2001-06-28

Icerigger is a fantastic book that would probably make a good movie. On a frozen planet with skating tigers, giant slugs, and little human influence, we get a good story about humans being stranded with a medieval-type race.

The book is action packed through out, you like the main characters, and the plot is simple, making for a nice easy read.

5 out of 5 stars Earthy, Adventurous, Icey.............................2001-06-03

This sci-fi novel would probably best be described as... earthy. It's written by ALAN DEAN Foster, and it's sometimes confusing, but written in a familiar, everyday-type style.

The book begins with a silly bar game, but moves on to the life of the main narrator, a 'nobody' salesman, Ethan F. Fortune. He is assigned to a city named Brass Monkey on the frozen world of Tran-ky-ky (a native name) to vend modern heaters (the inhabitants are maybe 800 years behind us). But instead he bumbles into a kidnapping along with a 'nobody' teacher. The kidnappers force the unfortunate victims into the lifeboat, but the bar guy had been tossed on board earlier in a drunken sleep. Plus they fail to leave before the kidnappers' bomb detonates and careen to the human-less outbacks of Tran-ky-ky. Now the party of 6 (Ethan, the drunkard - Skua September - , the schoolteacher, a wealthy industrialist, his overweight and sarcastic daughter, and the weak kidnapper - Skua kills the powerful one) must cope with the fascinating but hazardous planet.

Here are some things you'll read about:

                        --a *valuable* volcano

                        --a scholarly but dangerous monastery

--a feudal island, an old baron and his coquettish daughter

                        --a titanic, vacuum-cleaner ice slug

--hairy dragons, nocturnal carnivores, and alien ice plants

                        --a clipper-ship sled!

--violent sections involving marauding barbarians (the bulk of the story)

The whole thing is served up with clear, understandable writing that's so lifelike it sometimes gets raunchy. This isn't a book you would read more than one chapter at a time of, but the adventure story really does grip you. The science-fiction bits are great, too: the native "tran" (see "Barlowe's Guide to the Extra-Terrestrials") really are believable. So if you want to sit back and read about knights and castles on an ice world, well..... you'll love this novel!

5 out of 5 stars Working within a Incredible Universe.......1998-09-23

This is another book in the THRAX Universe. Foster has created a viable and realistic universe that he is able to explore many different concepts and yet still work within a frame work that always makes sense and gives the reader a feeling of history. It is a shame that it is out of print, because it is the beginning of an incredible series.

                        Book Description

It looked as if Ethan Fortune was stuck on the icy world of Tran-ky-ky, never to enjoy the warm comforts of civilization again. But when the scientists at the outpost of Brass Monkey detected an odd atmospheric phenomenon, things began to heat up.
Only the great icerigger Slanderscree could make the dangerous journey to the isolated southern continent, and only Ethan could convince the primitive Tran that the mysterious warm spot was worth the trip. Nothing could have prepared Ethan and his Tran and human companions for what they encountered as they sped southward, for its like had not been seen for thousands of years -- open water on the ice oceans of Tran-ky-ky!
But the worst was yet to come. This was no natural phenomenon. Someone was systematically raising the temperature of the frozen planet. If Ethan and crew of Slanderscree couldn't stop the process, soon Tran-ky-ky would become a paradise for humans -- and a living hell for the Tran.

4 out of 5 stars A warm farewell to our stranded friends on Tran-ky-ky........2002-03-02

Prolific SF writer Alan Dean Foster wraps up the adventures of the stranded Ethan Fortune and Suka September on the ice planet of Tran-ky-ky in a nice little package for fans of the series. Turns out the thawing of the ice at the equator Ethan saw in the second book (Mission to Moulkin) was not natural at all, someone is actually attempting to thaw out the planet. That could mean possible extinction for the Tran, which is unexceptable to Fortune and September. They and their Tran friends head out on the Slanderscree to see that the process is stopped, permanently. A wonderful ending to a wonderful series, highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars The finale of the Icerigger series........2001-09-18

The finale of the Icerigger series does not have quite the adventure of the other two and harbors a pretty silly villain and plot. None-the-less, anyone reading Icerigger and Mission to Moulokin will have to read Deluge Drivers, if only to spend the last few minutes available with our new friends the Tran. There is definitely something wonderful and personal about this series. The characters are very rich and you really want to know more about them and share in their adventures.

                        4 out of 5 stars A great conclusion to a great adventure!.......1999-11-26

This was the final book in this trilogy, and I enjoyed it as much as the rest. It kept my interest through the whole series. Foster gripped me in the drama of the Ice world I came to admire in the first two books, only now the entire planet was now in serious danger. The ultimate global warming destroying the planet and miraculously being saved by rouge adventuring heroes kind of story. This series made me a Foster fan. If you enjoyed the Flinx series, you will really enjoy this one!

4 out of 5 stars On whole a good series.......1999-07-30

Nice ending to the series. doesn't leave alot of loose ends. Good series to read for a bit of background on Skua September who is later encountered by Flinx on Alaspin

5 out of 5 stars A terrific wrap up of the Icerigger series!.......1998-02-22

This was a terrific wrap up of the Icerigger series! The only sad part was it closed out one of the most exciting and original tales Foster has ever spun! As a SF fan it leaves you longing for more adventure tales on Tran-Ky-Ky! A wonderful and exciting book!

I particularly enjoyed the Chapter on Regional Character (pp 47 - 71). I disagree with description of Kenya as being a "... brooding heavyweight ..." page 39. Kenyan coffee is notably light-bodied. Book has a good glossary of terms in Appendix A.

I wanted to know about coffee. This book gave me knowledge about coffee. Easy to read and to the point. After reading this book I ended up talking to individuals in the coffee business and I was able to communicate on their level about coffee and its production.

I recommend this book for any person who wants to explore and expand his knowledge about the coffee. Its history, procedures, types of coffee, regions, recipes, etc. Good book with much information.

4 out of 5 stars Great coffee book.......2003-05-12

This book gives a good basic understanding of what coffee is all about. I especially like the specificity of information about coffees from different areas in the Regional Character chapter. For example, discussing Costa Rica's two best growing areas and how the coffees differ. I also found the opinions of which coffees are worthy of their price helpful. I read the Perfect Cup first and am glad I did because it was a good coffee overview for me. Coffee Basics was a great second book for me because I was looking for more specific information about coffees of each area. If I hadn't read Perfect Cup first I think the break down of info. on each type of coffee/regional character would have been information overload for me. If you are new or relatively new to the coffee world and are excited about learning more and more about the subtlties and nuiances present in that cup, I highly recommend you read this book.

4 out of 5 stars Great starter book on tea.......2007-05-06

To try to prevent my niece from spending all of her time in college going to starb%#ks I recently put together a care package of tea brewer, a few starter books on tea, and some nice loose leaf teas in tins. Going through the recently published books on tea I found this one which is a nice paperback book on tea basics. It has a little filler but covers all of the fundamentals in a concise way, a brief history of camellia sinensis, where it is grown today, grades, types, how the market for tea works, tea vocabulary, some pros/cons on how to brew, and has a nice list of tea resources appended to the back. It even has a good brief description on how to cure a new yixing pot. I like it when a "book on basics" is done well for a topic, and this one is in that category. Not a lot of pretty pictures here... just some good basic information on tea. Throw in Okakura Kakuzo, one of the paperbacks by Diana Rosen and you have yourself a nice present to give someone just starting out with tea. WARNING to tea novices, this stuff is addicting and before you know it you will have an assortment of kettles cups and pots, thermometers, scales, infusers, tins and a dogeared copy of John Blofeld's book. You have been warned.

                                        5 out of 5 stars tea time.......2002-09-12

I absolutely was intrigued by this book, read while sipping a cup of tea. My favorite teas are Republic of Tea, I'd recommend those as well! I liked learning about "TGBOP", Oolong teas, how to brew teas, teas from different countries, etc. I am by no means a tea snob, just a tea lover. This book is great for tea drinkers of any kind.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for the Tea Beginner.......2002-01-04

This book impressed me. It is easy to read, has a personal feel, and covers all of the basics (what tea is, history, where it is produced, how to brew it, tea tasting, tea ceremonies, etc). Many resources are listed in the back. I have five books on tea so far (a beginner), and this is my favorite. If you only want one book on tea, this is my recommendation. The health section is pretty basic, so if that interests you, you might want to also look at a health-related tea book (green tea). This book describes the general regions, whereas the Tea Companion book describes the individual tea gardens (which may or may not be useful to you.)
