    Book Description

Onitsha tells the story of Fintan, a youth who travels to Africa in 1948 with his Italian mother to join the English father he has never met. Fintan is initially enchanted by the exotic world he discovers in Onitsha, a bustling city prominently situated on the eastern bank of the Niger River. But gradually he comes to recognize the intolerance and brutality of the colonial system. His youthful point of view provides the novel with a notably direct, horrified perspective on racism and colonialism.
In the words of translator Alison Anderson, Onitsha is remarkable for its “almost mythological evocation of local history and beliefs.” It is full of atmosphere—sights, sounds, smells —and at times the author’s sentences seem to flow with the dreamy languor of the river itself. But J. M. G. Le Clézio “never lets us forget the harsh realities of life nor the subsequent tragedy of war.” A startling account—and indictment—of colonialism, Onitsha is also a work of clear, forthright prose that ably portrays both colonial Nigeria and a young boy’s growing outrage.

4 out of 5 stars Nice, not boring, but still not perfect :).......2000-04-18

I read this book as part of my Sorbonne II exams literature study. At first, I thought it was going to bore me, and leave me all the way uninterested, mainly because I wasn't so keen on this type of literature, and because it seemed too long. But reading it was after all quite a nice experience! I found it wasn't boring, it kept me up, wanting to find out what happens next, although not all the time! :) Interesting because we learn so much about its theme (involving the status of Africa half a century ago). Interesting also, of a literary fashion; I, at least, found it fun to analyse it in class! It wouldn't get 5 stars because, well, it didn't exactly blow my skirt up, neither would it get 3 stars cause it just was more interesting than 3 out of 5!

      Book Description

In performing various economic analyses for its clients, I have occasionally been asked to investigate the market potential for various products and services in Nigeria. The purpose of this study is to understand the density of demand within Nigeria and the extent to which Onitsha might be used as a point of distribution within Africa. From an economic perspective, however, Onitsha does not represent a population within rigid geographical boundaries, rather, it represents an area of dominant influence over markets in adjacent areas. This influence varies from one industry to another, but also from one period of time to another. In what follows, I summarize the economic potential for Onitsha over the next five years for hundreds of industries, categories and products. The goal of this report is to report the real economic potential, or what an economist calls the latent demand, represented by Onitsha when defined as an area of dominant influence. The reader needs to realize that latent demand may or may not represent real sales. For many items, latent demand is clearly observable in sales, as in the case for food or housing items. Consider, however, the category "satellite launch vehicles". Clearly, there are no launch pads in Onitsha used by the space industry to launch satellites. However, the core benefit of the vehicles (e.g. telecommunications, etc.) is "consumed" by the area served by Onitsha. Without Onitsha, in other words, the market for satellite launch vehicles would be lower for the population in Nigeria, Africa, or the world in general. One needs to allocate, therefore, a portion of the worldwide economic demand for launch vehicles to both Africa and Onitsha. The data presented are the result of various spatial econometric and time-series forecasting models which, for each category presented, are applied to forecast and allocate demand across all countries of the world and major distribution centers or centers of dominant influence within each country. This is accomplished knowing that economic fundamentals (e.g. income) generally vary from one city to another within a given country over time. In this report, I report the allocation for each category for Onitsha as an area of dominant influence in Nigeria and, potentially, Africa. Important Caveat. Category definitions may overlap. The sum of multiple categories, therefore, may double count.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent piece of work, truly marvellous.......2004-02-27

Detailed, fluid, clear yet complex assessment of an intriguing culture.
Professor Henderson, now in Arizona, did this work while at Yale, during the 1950s and 1960s, by living with the people of Onitsha.
This is a seminal piece of anthropology, and is possibly the most detailed piece with regards to the Onitsha customs, which along with the Benin customs are amongst the most complex in West Africa and needless to say the continent at large. A society built on concepts not dissimilar from the senate and government of ancient Rome and ancient Egypt.

        5 out of 5 stars A comprehensive account of a complex civilization........2001-09-10

An excellent piece of work by Richard Henderson. The only comprehensive account of the traditions of the people of Onitsha, who descend from the powerful and equally complex Benin Empire. The explanation of the traditions and the clarity of the ritual is truly marvelous - it is a shame it is out of print and worse still, most of those who were interviewed are long passed, leaving this as one of the few embodiments of a culture little understood even by those who claim to be its keepers today.

3 out of 5 stars Competently Done, But Still.......2000-06-08

This book landed in my basket because of The Book of Night with Moon and its sequel. When I started it, I thought, "Now, I have read about these characters before, haven't I?" And yep, I had. I didn't remember them off-hand, though things came back.

The trouble is, this book is going to slip my mind by next week.

This is competently done, decently plotted, and the characters are both fairly likeable and fairly interesting. But these guys are interchangeable with any other group of characters from any number of novels.

That nest of adverbial phrases covers it. My feeling about this is ambiguous. There is absolutely nothing wrong with this book. But it's a good thing that it's in paperback, or I'd be feeling cheated right now, and probably annoyed.

Feel free to buy it. It will give you a couple pleasant hours, but you won't add to your already over-flowing bookshelves.

                  5 out of 5 stars A great Conclusion to a great Series.......2000-03-31

Diane has really outdone herself on this entire series and she doesn't leave reader hanging. I think that she has added a lot to the universe with yet another well written book.

                      Book Description

THE AMERICAN CIVIL WAR taken from Volume IV of Churchill's acclaimed A HISTORY OF THE ENGLISH- SPEAKING PEOPLES, brings us up to the turn of the century. But Churchill's superb account of the American Civil War stands on its own.

Churchill's understanding of the Civil War rivals that of our American scholars. From the first shot fired on Ft. Sumter to Lee's surrender at Appomattox, Churchill paints a picture of the time in his own elegant style and with his own unique perspective.

"Churchill's historical vision places the Civil War in the context of its time and reveals it for the inevitable resolution that it was." (B-O-T Editorial Review Board)

Churchill's view of our War Between the States is in keepingwith the most prominent mythologized history of that conflict, onefeature of which is a perception of "near-divinity" inGen. Robert E. Lee. That perception was begun during the war andboosted to completion shortly afterwards by Gen. Jubal Early and hispowerful influence over the Southern Historical Society Papers (amajor source for most Civil War history). An excellent ifcontroversial review of these issues is found in "The Myth of theLost Cause" ed. by Gallagher and Nolan.

One can readilyunderstand the appeal of such a myth to Winston Churchill as he triedto come to terms with his own witnessing of the Fall of the BritishEmpire having just been totally dependent on American aid to survivethe war with Germany.

Joseph Campbell understood "myth"to be a psychosocial system (expressed through the arts) that allows aculture to get into accord with an awful fact that cannot be dealtwith as raw, factual history. It would seem that witnessing one'ssociety crumbling into oblivion calls for such a myth.

Churchill'swork is fascinating. His use of the English language is mostsuperb. This work will provide the reader (or listener) with somepowerful insights into the American Civl War, World War II, and theuse of myth to connect us with the awful human experience of havingthe very structure of one's World vanish forever.

2 out of 5 stars Not one of Winston's best efforts.......2000-05-13

The American Civil War should have been named Robert E. Lee's Civil War. 85% of the books attention is paid to Lee's character, Lee's battles, Lee's brilliance, Lee's nobility, Lee's wisdom. At the end of the War Churchill rightly criticizes Lee for his faulty generalship in sending thousands to die in frontal assaults when the war was clearly lost, but his fixation on Lee still borders on worship. There were other things going on in the War, like the War in the West, Vicksburg, Chattanooga, Atlanta campaign, March to the Sea, etc., but Churchill concludes these events did not require any full discussion. Either Winston had a deadline to meet and was out of time or he displays a surprising lack of knowledge by leaving out at least half of the Civil War. But of course if you are a Lee fan, then you'll love this one.

Haas has an unbeatable book on Air Force Special Operations. This book covers the periods from WWII with high lights about the OSS (Office of Strategic Services, forerunner to the CIA and Green Berets) onto Korea covering air missions on psychological operations and support efforts, rolling into the late 50s early 60s coving various clandestine and covert operations, like the "Bay of Pigs". Haas then picks up with the 2nd Indochina war starting in the early 60s with Laos wrapping it up the Vietnam section with the Son Tay Raid. This book also covers Medal of Honor winners and other heroes and personalities of Air Force special operations. The book has an index and bibliography.
I rated this book 4 instead 5 stars for one reason. There are to versions of this book both soft cover, but the problem lays in that one version is printed in full color on high quality glossy pages and the other completely in black & white on low end paper, both soft covers are the same quality. This book being primarily and illustrated history with pictures, illustrations, charts and diagrams on practically every page it looses a lot of its luster in B&W. I guess if you never seen the color version it would not matter but I own both, because I borrowed a copy (color version) from a friend and liked it enough to add it to my library, I ordered the book on line an got the B&W version, so I went on the hunt and found another copy in color (FYI: Air University Press, Alabama, 1997 printed the color edition), big pain in the but and costly! Over all I highly recommend this book in ANY version it is truly a landmark edition to US Air Force Special Operation and American Spec Ops in general. Great Job Haas!

Julia and Jacques Cooking at Home is the companion volume to Julia Child and Jacques Pepin's PBS series of the same name. The setup works like this: the two opinionated TV cooks confront different ingredients on each show, then make their way through to the finished dishes that make up a meal. The recipes reveal themselves along the way.

What's most important here--and it shows up in the cookbook--is that there is no one way to cook. The point of the book isn't to follow recipes, but to cook from the suggestions. And Julia and Jacques have many, many suggestions when it comes to home cooking in the French style. And many tips, for that matter.

Take chicken, for example. "Not everything I do with my roast chicken is necessarily scientific," Julia says. "For instance, I always give my bird a generous butter massage before I put it in the oven. Why? Because I think the chicken likes it--and, more important, I like to give it." Julia sets her chicken on a V-rack in a roasting pan in a 425-degree oven that she then turns down to 350 after 15 minutes. Jacques roasts his bird at 425, on its side, right in the pan. "To me," he says, "it's very important to place the chicken on its side for all but 10 minutes of roasting." After 25 minutes he turns his chicken over, careful not to tear the skin, and lowers the heat to 400. The bird finishes breast-side up for the last 15 to 20 minutes.

This book is divided into chapters on appetizers, soups, eggs, salads and sandwiches, potatoes, vegetables, fish, poultry, meats, and desserts. The she said-he said format works throughout, and a lot of what's said you may realize you have heard before. There are no big surprises here. But it's good fun, a decent reminder of some of the classics of French tradition, and a chance to loosen up and simply cook at home with a couple of masters--one to the right of you, one to the left. You decide which hamburger's the right one for you. --Schuyler Ingle

                                    Book Description

The companion volume to the public television series Julia and Jacques Cooking at Home

Two legendary cooks, Julia Child and Jacques Pépin, invite us into their kitchen and show us the basics of good home cooking.
What makes this book unique is the richness of information they offer on every page, as they demonstrate techniques (on which they don't always agree), discuss ingredients, improvise, balance flavors to round out a meal, and conjure up new dishes from leftovers. Center stage in these pages are carefully spelled-out recipes flanked by Julia's comments and Jacques's comments--the accumulated wisdom of a lifetime of honing their cooking skills. Nothing is written in stone, they imply. And that is one of the most important lessons for every good cook.
So sharpen your knives and join in the fun as you learn to make . . .

Throughout this richly illustrated book you'll see Julia's and Jacques's hands at work, and you'll sense the pleasure the two are having cooking together, tasting, exchanging ideas, joshing with each other, and raising a glass to savor the fruits of their labor. Again and again they demonstrate that cooking is endlessly fascinating and challenging and, while ultimately personal, it is a joy to be shared.

5 out of 5 stars Finally, a cookbook that fully explains how to do a recipe.......2007-04-24

I am skeptical of cookbooks based on TV shows; I find them to be a waste of time and money. This one, however, is a happy exception. It is one of the few cookbooks aimed at the home cook that will make you a better cook. It is an excellent resource for home cooking.

It is a very friendly book for the home cook and easy to use. No fancy tools that only a professional chef can afford, no exotic ingredients that can only be found at one specific ethnic deli in Manhattan, no complicated multipart recipes that require several prep cooks backstage to pull off correctly. There are only a couple of recipes the home cook might have problems with (galantine, soufflé, roulade). Here is a 5# sack of potatoes or a whole chicken; OK, smarty pants, what is the home cook suppose to do with them? How do you cook a steak? This book will tell you.

The TV show was rather unusual. When you tape a cooking show series, the recipes and script are all predetermined months in advance. Here, the shows were all done extemporaneously, and the cookbook written after, not before the TV taping. They started with just ingredients and went from there. They chose the best way or favorite recipes with the home cook in mind that are simple and easy to do. There was also no attempt to `cover' all of the culinary bases, just their favorite home recipes; for example, they have recipes for mussels and lobster, but there are none for cakes or pies (If you discount the roulade and galette).

Most of the photos are not from the tapings, but taken during the writing of the book. The main recipes and texts were written by a third co-author. Recipes or comments (which are often longer than the recipes) by Jacques or Julia are clearly labeled and even color-coded. And, naturally, the 2 often do not agree. Some recipes have 2 different versions, one from each person (pie dough; crepes; scrambled eggs, poached eggs). There are several mini essays on various ingredients.

There are many culinary gems. How about Steak Diane, or the original version of Caesar salad (no, there are no anchovies)? When was the last time you made crepes? How about 3 different recipes for gravlax, depending on how much time you have? Most recipes span several pages and have explanations and related information. Hollandaise gets 4 pages, mayonnaise gets 5, and beef bourguignon gets 6. So, there is no excuse for not understanding a recipe or being unsure of how to do a step.

This book is good for beginners as well as intermediate cooks...since it not only provides basic information about cooking, but gives various tips and methods which intermediate level cooks will appreciate. I loved the recipe for american potato salad that julia gave...it came out exactly like it should! As for the pie/tart dough that Jacques gave, it was heaven;y....crumbly and flaky all at the same time! Love this book!

5 out of 5 stars A reliable reference with absolutely dependable recipes.......2006-11-05

I'm surprised by how often I turn to this cookbook, but I shouldn't be. The two authors are household words, and they earned their reputation by making "fine cooking" accessible.

Like the PBS show on which the cookbook is based (but don't worry if you missed it), this book is a professional repartee between two accomplished cooks who have been comfortable friends for decades. And that "chemistry" shows through in marvelous ways. The book is fun, entertaining, and educational to read... oh yeah, and it has great recipes, too.

Each author takes a different riff on the same theme, whether it's meat stock or salmon. Even when they don't supply two "competing" recipes, they offer notes on each others' techniques. For example, Julia's notes alongside Jacques' onion soup discuss the importance of cooking the onions properly and thoroughly; Jacques talks about ways to create variations on the recipe.

There are some brilliant recipes in this book, which range from the simple but elegant (salmon cooked inside thin layers of potato, which alone is a reason to spring for a mandoline), to the time consuming but easy (the best pot roast recipe I've ever encountered is in here), to the "gosh we should make that someday" fantasies (will I ever bone a turkey?!) to the deliriously simple but absolutely reliable. The last category include Jacques' vinegarette recipe and how to make it to last in the fridge. Sure, I must have 40 vinegarettes, but I always know that _this_ one works.

I haven't made every recipe here (though it's a goal I might enjoy), but every single one of them is a success. And with excellent food photography, you can follow the food's process from cutting up a chicken to the glorious result. The recipes are a mixture of American and French, encompassing everything from the aforementioned pot roast to steak au poivre to stuffed artichoke bottoms. They range from sandwiches (even your basic hamburger) to sauces (this is the Hollandaise recipe I use) to a turkey galantine (which I love reading about but would never have the nerve to try).

I absolutely love this book. I think you will, too.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book for the Cook! and Funny Too.......2004-08-19

If you saw them in action, the book pulls it all together. These two masters provide a complete look into the world of cooking but most of all technique. Technique is key and yes if you learn and practice the techniques the food is wonderful. My family enjoys watching (at times laughing) me deboning a turkey or chicken. It is with great pleasure I recommend this book to anyone serious about cooking.

5 out of 5 stars a truly useful kitchen resource.......2004-08-04

Whenever I am preparing a large meal for our guests, I take the time to consult this wonderful book. I think of cookbooks as a source for ideas and guidelines, and I feel free to modify the recipes that I find. This book, like the others by Julia Child, is simultaneously an ordinary cookbook where you can follow the recipes to the letter, and at the same time a great book that literally teaches the reader how to cook. The idea of showing the disagreements and style differences between two great cooks turns out to be helpful as well as entertaining: "Oh, is that how YOU do that? Well, this is how I do it!"
                                    Bon appetit.
