Book Description
In this vital and heartbreaking collection of stories, Valerie Martin, the bestselling author of Mary Reilly and the internationally acclaimed Property, turns an unflinching eye upon artists—driven and blocked, desired and detested, infamous and sublime, as they struggle beneath the tyranny of Art to reconcile their audience with their muse.
A painter who owes his small success to a man he despises, discovers that his passivity has cost him the love that might have set him free. A writer of modest talents encounters the old love who once betrayed him; now she repels him, yet the unfinished novel she leaves in his hands may surpass anything he could ever produce himself. An American poet in Rome finds herself forced to choose between her lover and a world so alien it takes her voice away. A print maker, who has reached a certain age, enters so deeply into the magical world of her imagination that she can never find her way back. In captivating, luminous prose, Martin explores the trials and rewards of human relationships and creative endeavor with all the ease and insight of a writer at the top of her form.

Couldn't put it down!.......2007-05-25
On the one hand, I couldn't put this book down. Every story is complete--a novel in miniature. But then I realized I was going to finish the book and that maade me sad. In the end, I had to ration these stories out to myself, one a day, because I didn't want it to ever end.
Needs to lighten up.......2006-11-20
These stories about writers and artists do not make the creative life sound attractive. Apart from rejected manuscripts and unsold paintings Martin's characters face many hazards. Even their cats are disaster-prone. As in her "Property" she seldom makes nice things happen to nice people. There are a lot of unpleasant deaths and one unhappy transmogrification. People jump out of windows, get trapped under cars, or die naturally and are found rotting. They inhabit New Orleans apartments without air conditioning in the summer or ones in Vermont without heat in the winter. "His Blue Period" was set in the same milieu as Tama Janowitz's wonderful "Slaves of New York."
I liked "Beethoven" and "The Open Door" best because, I think, the author eschews melodramatic devices and lets the action grow out of and define the character. She can be a witty and insightful writer when she lets cheerfulness creep in.
Stories that continue to resonate in the memory.......2006-09-07
Valerie Martin's "Mary Reilly" reimagined "The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" with such compelling intensity that new readers who sought out Stevenson afterwards might ask which is the real classic; and "Property" studied the corrosive effects of ownership on slave and slaveholder with a gaze more unflinching than most writers would care to attempt.
Set in recent times, "The Unfinished Novel and Other Stories" do not require, or permit, such stringency. One thinks of Henry James's tales of various artists, transposed to a wholly modern key: a painter who flees from a hapless love, and a lover who flees from a hapless painter---an actor who finds himself mortally upstaged by life---a poet who may lose her access to poetry if she relocates to remain with her partner. The present-day scenes of the sixty-two-page title story, set in a section of New Orleans that did not need Katrina to be desolate, possess the lurid lucidity of nightmare; and the concluding impasse---what to do with a manuscript one can neither read nor destroy---is resolved with a credibility that astonishes as it delights. Then, after so much tense and textural realism (many of these artists started out poor, or still are), in the final story the collection takes flight. At first "The Change" seems to refer merely to menopause, afflicting a printmaker who finds its effects anything but "mere"; but the alterations turn out to be much more drastic.
That we are being guided by a master story-teller is confirmed by the way the tales resonate in the memory long after a first reading: you go back to check this detail and that conversation and the quiet magic Martin works with words. This is a book for readers to revel in, and writers to learn from.
Beautifully written and moving.......2006-07-12
These short stories were wrought with great craftmanship, and they are extremely moving snapshots of the lives of artists and writers. The last two stories, in particular, about a couple on the verge of breaking up who travels to Rome, and about a husband's loving struggle to understand the changes his wife is going through, are fascinating and perceptive. I look forward to reading more of Valerie Martin's work.
absolutely brilliant.......2006-06-29
these stories were the first encounter i have had with valerie martin. by doing the unthinkable, i judged this book by its cover and was immediately taken in by it. every story was as engaging as the next. i was actually sad when it was over! the title story is incredibly captivating with all its twists and turns. a collection of truly engaging and fascinating stories, you'll devour it in one sitting!

Tom Sawyer Abroad: By Huck Finn
ASIN: 0520050908 |
Book Description
o Includes the authoritative texts for eleven pieces written between 1868 and 1902
o Publishes, for the first time, the complete text of "Villagers of 1840-3," Mark Twain's astounding feat of memory
o Features a biographical directory and notes that reflect extensive new research on Mark Twain's early life in Missouri
Throughout his career, Mark Twain frequently turned for inspiration to memories of his youth in the Mississippi River town of Hannibal, Missouri. What has come to be known as the Matter of Hannibal inspired two of his most famous books, Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn, and provided the basis for the eleven pieces reprinted here. Most of these selections (eight of them fiction and three of them autobiographical) were never completed, and all were left unpublished. Written between 1868 and 1902, they include a diverse assortment of adventures, satires, and reminiscences in which the characters of his own childhood and of his best-loved fiction, particularly Huck Finn and Tom Sawyer, come alive again. The autobiographical recollections culminate in an astounding feat of memory titled "Villagers of 1840-3" in which the author, writing for himself alone at the age of sixty-one, recalls with humor and pathos the characters of some one hundred and fifty people from his childhood. Accompanied by notes that reflect extensive new research on Mark Twain's early life in Missouri, the selections in this volume offer a revealing view of Mark Twain's varied and repeated attempts to give literary expression to the Matter of Hannibal.

interesting.......2000-06-29
This collection of unfinished stories was very interesting. It's very cool to know these unfinished tales. This product is not quite as good as the original Huck Finn and Tom Sawyer novels but is defenately a good collection. Some of the stories aren't as good as others but there are several that are very good.

I love this book - It is full of gorgeous designs adapted from kimonos used as costumes for traditional Japanese theatre. There is a great variety of projects beyond cushions to complete and keep the avid needlepointer busy and intrigued (including a bed rest!) plus plenty of interesting background information for each design. Charts and instructions are detailed and accurate, and all projects have color photos

5 stars for 5 sweet stories.......2005-09-09
Times Two is a collection of stories about high school students falling in love. It's very sweet, fluffy, and innocent without being overly sappy.
The titles of the stories are Love at First Touch, Expiration Date 2001, Second Impression, Frequency, and Baby Universe.
My favorite of the five is Frequency. It's about a straight-forward girl named Kaori who one day wakes up with the ablility to hear the thoughts of Morihiro, the class representative and model student. She realizes that the real Morihiro is very different from the perfect boy he pretends to be.
I really liked this manga's stories, but the art is nice as well. It's not amazing, but the details are simple and clean. There were, however, a few panels that wowed me. Overall: short, sweet, and worth the $10 I paid for it.
Product Description
Books One and Two of the Series of Pendragon Bobby Pendragon is a seemingly normal fourteen-year-old boy. But there is something special about Bobby: He is going to save the world. In this very special edition, join Bobby on his first two adventures to the alternate dimension of Denduron and the underwater territory of Cloral. His mission: to save the world from ultimate evil. Given what the consequences would be, failure is not an option. From the back of the book.
Book Description
A principal feature of this book is the substantial care and attention devoted to explaining the basic ideas of the subject. Whenever a new theoretical concept is introduced it is carefully explained by reference to practical examples drawn mainly from the physical sciences. Subjects covered include: spectral analysis which is closely intertwined with the "time domain" approach, elementary notions of Hilbert Space Theory, basic probability theory, and practical analysis of time series data. The inclusion of material on "kalman filtering", state-space filtering", "non-linear models" and continuous time" models completes the impressive list of unique and detailed features which will give this book a prominent position among related literature. The first sectionVolume 1deals with single (univariate) series, while the secondVolume 2treats the analysis of several (multivariate) series and the problems of prediction, forecasting and control.
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful Intermediate-Level Treatment.......2006-06-20
The author has assembled a wonderfully accessible study of time series analysis from the point of view of spectral theory. This book really bridges the gap between Brockwell & Davis' elementary text "Introduction to Time Series and Forecasting" and their advanced text "Time Series: Theory and Methods".
The book is logically partitioned into two volumes: Volume I (Chapters 1-8) considers spectral methods for time series, while Volume II (Chapters 9-11) extends the results to multivariate time series.
Priestly tries to keep the prerequisites to a minimum, but the reader is well advised to do a little background preparation before jumping in to this book. For the required material in mathematical analysis of Fourier series, I recommend Rudin's "Real and Complex Analysis", 3rd edition. Although Priestly provide a brief introduction to probability theory, I'd recommend a more solid grounding, as can be found in Chung's "A Course in Probability Theory", 3rd edition. The elementary text by Brockwell & Davis presents the needed material on time series analysis.
In Chapter 1, Priestly sets up the motivation for considering spectral analysis of stationary time series, and gives four practical reasons for the use of spectral methods.
The reader will find a brief, 70 page overview of probability theory in Chapter 2. If the terms don't look familiar on a quick scan of this chapter, you'll want to get more detail from Chung's text before proceeding with Priestly.
Chapter 3 introduces stochastic processes and time series. Stationary time series are defined, as is the auto-covariance and autocorrelation function. ARMA(p,q) models are introduced and some basic results are established about these models.
The core results from spectral analysis are given in Chapter 4. The two main results are the Wiener-Khintchine Theorem (characterized those functions which can be the autocorrelation function of a stationary process), and the Spectral Representation Theorem for Stationary Processes.
Chapter 5 gives a really nice treatment of ARMA(p,q) model specification and estimation. The author motivates the well-known conditional maximum likelihood techniques for estimating coefficients, and gives really insight into the development of methods of order estimation using the information criterion ala Akaike (i.e. AIC) and Schwartz.
The next section consists discuss spectral estimation and consists of Chapters 6, 7, and 8. Chapter 6 tackles the theoretical issues surrounding estimated the spectral density of a stationary process. The author does a good job explaining the shortcomings of the periodogram as an estimator, as well as the need for tapering or 'windowing'. Chapter 7 continues along this theme by giving empirical guidance for selecting windowing schemes. Chapter 8 discusses the thorny problem of posed by processes containing both a continuous and a discrete spectrum.
The last part of the book comprised Volume II and extends the results of the first volume to cover the case of multivariate time series. Applications considered in this volume include problems of filtering and prediction. In the last chapter of the book, Priestly presents some of his own research on "evolutionary spectra" which is an attempt to extend the analysis to non-stationary processes.
The book is written in monograph style; as such there are no formal exercises. However, the author gives lots of examples using real-world datasets. Working through the examples serves to reinforce the reading. The author states several theorems, but usually prefers to justify these results with a heuristic argument. On occasion, a formal proof is given, but there are no end-of-proof markers (e.g. QED). The reader must take care to determine where the proof ends and the discussion resumes.
A good mathematical discussion of Spectral Analysis.......2005-07-02
The book covers a good deal of spectral analysis with all the details and results and applications. It starts with probability theory and random processes, definition of Fourier series, spectrums, estimation using spectral methods and more advanced topics. The book focuses on frequency domain methods, though in parts it discusses time-series models like AR, ARMA, ... but in a frequency domain context. The book is rather mathematical and urges the reader to have some math background or familiarity with system theory and filters. It discusses the results for both continuous and discrete time processes, though the emphasis is more on the continuous time. The discussions are done neatly but can be cumbersome or unnecessary for people who just want to use a method. It is more a book for those who want to get to the bottom of the methods with a deep understanding of concepts.
I found this book useful and rather complete and I am using that in a lot of my own projects.
Theoretical.......2001-01-20
This book covers almost all possible aspects of spectral analysis of time series. The problem is that it is almost exclusively theoretical. It should not be used for learning spectral analysis but rather as a reference book. There are very few practical examples but when looking for a proof or an abstract presentation of a particular concept, this book should allow you to understand the theory that lies behind... However, a very good treatment of spectral analysis and very broad coverage of the subject...
Needs more examples but still very good........2001-01-09
I thought James D. Hamiltons book Time Serives Aanlysis was better. It was easier to understand and covered more material, including VAR models and State Space. Still this was and is an excellent book, and it goes into details about multivariate statistics that are not contained in Hamilton's book. I have the same complaint about this book as Hamilton's. Not enough examples. I compare these two books to those of Hosmer and Lemeshow's Applied Logistic Regression where there were nurmerous examples and problems to solve based on data they had provided.

Review.......2003-04-14
"Caves of Mars" was a pretty fair off book. It was interesting to me as I read it that even though it was written and published before the 90's it still had a sense of realism that most of the sci-fi stories of the past lacked. The use of time in the book also helped you understand how events would progress throughout the novel. It wasn't one of the best things I've read but it was entertaining to me.

Elizabeth David had it easy. All she had to do was eat her way through France and Italy and translate the essence of the encountered cuisines for a ravenous, literate, English-speaking public. Fuschia Dunlop, on the other hand, went to Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan in China, where she ended up the first foreign student enrolled at the Sichuan Institute of Higher Cuisine. That was nearly 10 years ago. After annual return visits and endless research she has produced, in English, a magnificent introduction to the food and foodways of Sichuan. She is in every way the dharma inheritor of Elizabeth David.
You too may start to salivate halfway through the introduction to Dunlop's magnificent Land of Plenty: A Treasury of Authentic Sichuan Cooking. Perhaps it begins when she explains xian, "one of the most beautiful words in the Chinese culinary language." It describes an entire range of flavor and sensation, "the indefinable, delicious taste of fresh meat, poultry, and seafood, the scrumptious flavors of a pure chicken soup..." Before you know it you are running headlong into a world of 23 distinct flavors and 56 cooking methods (they are all listed at the end of the book). Sichuan is the place where "barbarian peppers" met up with a natural cornucopia and a literary cooking tradition stretching back to the fifth century A.D. Innovation with cooking technique and new and challenging ingredients remains a hallmark of Sichuan. After describing basic cutting skills and cooking techniques, Dunlop presents her recipes in chapters that include "Noodles, Dumplings, and Other Street Treats"; "Appetizers"; "Meat"; "Poultry"; "Fish"; "Vegetables and Bean Curd"; "Stocks and Soup"; "Sweet Dishes"; and "Hotpot." Yes, you will find Gong Bao (Kung Pao) Chicken with Peanuts--Gong Bao Ji Ding. It's named after a late 19th-century governor of Sichuan, Ding Baozhen, which brought on the wrath of the Cultural Revolution for its imperial associations. Until rehabilitation, the dish was called "fast-fried chicken cubes" or "chicken cubes with seared chilies."
Land of Plenty is literary food writing at its best, as well as a marvelous invitation to new skills and flavors for the home cook. Read it. Cook it. Eat it. And take pleasure in the emerging career of Fuschia Dunlop, a big new voice in the world of food. --Schuyler Ingle
Book Description
The Chinese call the province of Sichuan in southwest China "the land of plenty" and "the place for flavor." Although it is mostly known in the West for its hot-and-spicy dishes, the Chinese love Sichuan food for its inventive use of seasonings and its many styles of preparation. Fuchsia Dunlop immersed herself in Sichuanese cooking and culture for two years, gathering from regional chefs and home cooks a full range of recipes from soups to desserts. She provides glossaries of Sichuan's ingredients and cooking methods, and Chinese characters for and definitions of the twenty-three flavors at the heart of the Sichuanese culinary canon. Equally valuable for novices and experts, Land of Plenty teaches everything from how to wield a cleaver to how to make delicious Kung Pao chicken, offering a unique user-friendly introduction to one of China's richest cuisines. 16 pages of color photographs.

A Must Own.......2007-08-11
The Good:
- Authentic recipes (lots of them). Most of the dishes taste pretty good. The first dish I made was Gong Bao Ji Ding and it was delicious.
- Very nicely written. Instructions were clear and easy to follow. Lots of great info and details about the ingredients and cooking method. The author also provides an interesting background for each dish. You can tell Dunlop is passionate about Sichuanese food.
- Great organization (separated by Noodles, Appetizers, Meat, Fish, etc.)
- No MSG
The Bad:
- Lacks pictures. The pictures were great but I wish there were more. I had to use google to compare my results.
Conclusion:
Overall a great book and easily recommended. Despite the lack of pictures, I still have to rate it 5 stars because of the delicious recipes.
Land of Plenty: A Treasury of Authentic Sichuan Cooking.......2007-07-12
Wonderful cookbook, my husband & I have become exteremly interested in Sichuan Cooking over the past few months and we were very excited to find a cookbook representing the Sichuan style of cooking. We love cooking with Sichuan Peppercorns and the "Hot & Numbing" style of cooking. The first recipe we tried was the Dry Cooked Beef, the recipe was very well written, easy to understand and the end product was yummy. I would recommend this book to any one who is interested in a wonderful and very interesting style of Asian cooking.

i noticed in the 2003 review that it was stated that US government had banned import of this key component. this ban appears to have been lifted and they can be found online at places like Penzeys

An excellent book on cooking and culture........2007-05-12
This is an extremely well written book, with careful instructions for making classic Sichuan dishes. Much restaurant and cookbook Chinese cookery of Britain and the USA is Cantonese, with some Peking style and Shanghai variations. The "Szechuan" or "Sichuan" style in most restaurants, without an authentic Sichuanese trained chef, is "watered down" Sichuan or a "hot" Cantonese variant, turning people off to a cuisine they have truly never tried.
My Chinese chef-friend from Chengdu, Capital of Sichuan Province, has looked this book over, cooked several dishes from it for us, and proclaimed it "very very good". I've eaten in Chengdu, and also greatly appreciate the taste of native Sichuan cookery.
For example, "Pork slices with black cloud fungus", a fairly quick and simple stir fry, was the real thing, just as my friend had back in Chengdu. Rehydrate the dried fungus to be moist and still be a touch crunchy, and do not overcook it, or it loses this necessary mild crunchy texture. Feeling a little peckish? Try also Sweet and sour pork, Boiled beef slices in a fiery sauce, Pock marked(Old woman's) Mother Chen's beancurd, hotpot broth (for dipping varied foods), and spicy braised fish with whole garlic. Yum!
Need to learn what true cooking should taste like before cooking on your own? Compare your cookery with kitchens such as Bar Shu, the Sichuan restaurant in London under Miss Dunlop's supervision; some other Sichuan places in England are London's Sichuan Restaurant, and Red Chilli in Manchester.
My friend and my only small complaint/suggestion is that as good as the color photos are, there is a great need to have photos of much more of the dishes in a next edition. (Photos of eight or more dishes can fit on one side of a page, to save costs, and increase variety.) Note, pictures of some dishes can sometimes be found by Googling.
Sichuan peppercorn has been available again in the USA since 2005 at several internet pepper suppliers... it's a truly necessary ingredient for the "numbing" spice's contibution to quite a few authentic dishes. They are dark red, with the inner gritty black seeds removed. Chew one, if it doesn't have a tingling and somewhat numbing sensation on your tongue and lips within a minute, then get a fresher batch elsewhere! Supplies for the other staples can be found at Chinese/Asian suppply stores in larger cities, or from internet suppliers.
Note: Fuchsia Dunlop's cookbook, "Revolutionary Chinese Cookbook: Recipes from Hunan Province", is also a very good book; I tend to prefer this one.
