A "must have".......2000-04-22
This book features beautiful colorful illustrations and a very cute story, full of accurate cultural details. To be enjoyed by children and adults alike, it also is a great way to "teach" your kids about death, or to help them deal with mourning, whether or not you are hispanic.
Wonderful.......2000-03-29
El Espiritu de Tio Fernando is an excellent book describing the mexican celebration of Days of the Dead. The book follows a young boy and his mother as they remember his uncle who has died within the last year. The book is simple yet includes many aspects of the celebration. The illustrations are wonderfully detailed so as to show the emotions of each part of the celebration. The text is in both English and Spanish allowing all children to enjoy it equally.

Book Description
This selection of twenty-seven stories shows Maupassant at his comic, cruel, and brilliant best. In addition to the poignant title story, it includes one of the most famous tales ever written, The Necklace , and Le Horla, an account of a disintegrating personality that chillingly parallels the author's own decline into madness. All the stories demonstrate his genius for invention and his ability to write unblinkingly about the absurdity of the human condition, supporting Henry James' claim that in the annals of story-telling, Maupassant stands `like a lion in the path'.

Book Description
It's a spring morning on the farm. Grandma is happy the grandkids are visiting--they've picked just the right day!--and Grandpa is fixing breakfast. Suddenly his grandson reports that the cows have got loose! He thinks Big Brown Bessie just stepped on a goose! "Good gracious," Grandpa says as he pours himself a glass of milk. When his granddaughter shouts the chickens are out, Grandpa cooks up some eggs. Pigs broke the gate? Grandpa fries bacon. Why is Grandpa so cool? Because he knows the kids are trying to play an April Fool's trick!

The grandkids are visiting Grandma and Grandpa on their farm.......2005-01-03
The grandkids are visiting Grandma and Grandpa on their farm. Grandpa is fixing breakfast for everyone when suddenly his grandson bursts into the kitchen shouting "The cows have got loose! I think Big Brown Bessie just stepped on a goose!" But Grandpa doesn't respond to the news -- he just calmly pours himself a glass of milk. Grandpa is so relaxed because its April Fools' Day and the children are playing tricks! Then Grandma steps in with a trick of her own!! In creating her lyrical text for April Foolishness, author Teresa Bateman draws upon her own experiences growing up on a farm and creates a story to which Nadine Westcott's lively illustrations are a perfect complement.
NO FOOLING - A FUN BOOK.......2004-09-21
Kids love to visit their grandparents, and grandparents love to have them (most of the time). A visit may hold many surprises when it begins on April Fool's Day, which is what happened when two rambunctious youngsters arrived at the farm.
Told in lilting rhyme and illustrated in bold full-page color "April Foolishness" is a merry look at that special day. Grandma begins the day as grandpa is cooking breakfast in the kitchen. She thinks, "Life on the farm keeps a gal on her toes. That's what grandma thought as she flung on her clothes."
Well grandpa needs to be on his toes, too because the first thing he hears from his young visitors is that the cows have gotten loose and one stepped on a goose. Next is the announcement that the chickens are out, and the pigs broke the gate.
Children will smile their way through this rollicking story until they learn who pulls off the best April Fool joke of all.

Short stories by a Syrian author.......2002-03-14
Tamir is an outstanding writer: his writings are short, concise, and hypnotic. His prose sometimes has a quality that many Middle Eastern/Mediterranean writers have of sensuous overload--sensuous imagery that is intoxicating (I think of Kemal, Tewfiq al Hakim or Kazantzakis for example). His stories often attack injustice in a myriad of forms, from the behviour of the police under dictatorships, to the treatment of women in the masculinist societies of the Near East, from political and economic injustice to sexual abuses and maltreatment. Tamir is a very good introduction to Middle Eastern literature.

Mexico ABCs: A Book About the People and Places of Mexico (Country Abcs)
ASIN: 0826338860 |
Book Description
This collection of six bilingual children's stories takes a regional and historical emphases. Sixteen provides the background of September 16, Mexico's day of independence from Spain, and places it in a present-day context with which children can easily identify. The Little General teaches children about Cinco de Mayo through a young boy who helps save his village from the approaching French army.
The remaining four stories are fables that impart important moral themes to young readers. In Sweetie, the Lion that Thought He Was a Sheep, children learn to respect different backgrounds and abilities. A Parrot for Christmas demonstrates the friendship children can share with animals and Orlando, the Circus Bear emphasizes the importance of compassion toward animals. A Horse Called `Miracle' teaches the value of helping others in need.
Each story is followed with discussion questions to help children recall the story's key details and suggestions for classroom activities designed to stimulate curiosity and expand knowledge of historical events.
From Stories of Mexico's Independence Days:
Sweetie, the Lion that Thought He Was a Sheep
All the animals in the forest and the fields were trembling! They were afraid something frightful was happening. The lions were roaring so loudly that the ground was shaking. No one had ever heard the lions roar that way before.
The rabbits gathered together in small groups, very much afraid. What is happening to the lions? asked one rabbit. I have never heard such a deafening ROOOAR, ROOOAR, ROOOAR.
Nunca he oído unos GRUÑIDOS, GRUÑIDOS, GRUÑIDOS, como esos.

A troubled couple sets out from a dismal future to retrieve Elvis Presley from an oddly different 1954. They need the King to be a savior to what's left of humanity, but he's a murderous freak with no desire to be anyone's god. Elvissey is set in Jack Womack's maybe-not-cyberpunk future, where the Dryco corporation runs everything, and everyone has been or will be "regooded," for their own good. Womack writes in an evolved language, full of odd verbs and newspeak: "He unpocketed a bottle of small blue pills; Dryco's standard eyedots and smile were imprinted upon each tablet. Three hours sole could pass between dosings, no more, no less. Swallowing dry, he fixed a doorways stare; shook, and resettled.... Regooded or not, his unscratchables still itched."
This is a bleak tale, buzzy and complex, full of human failings. Elvis is a disgusting jerk. The United States of Dryco is horrifying and manipulative. And Iz and John are mutually lonely, despairing in their failing marriage, and betrayed by Dryco. Despite its darkness--or maybe because of it--you owe it to yourself to read Elvissey. Womack is one of the most interesting writers in the business, and nobody does cultural science fiction funk like he does. --Therese Littleton
Book Description
At once a biting satire and a taut, fast-paced thriller, Elvissey is the story of Isabel and John, a troubled couple who voyage from the year 2033 to a strangely altered 1954. They are on a desperate mission to kidnap the young Elvis Presley and bring him back to the present day to serve as a ready-made cult leader. He proves, however, to be a reluctant messiah, and things do not work out quite as planned.
Customer Reviews:
Hard to Read, Yet Harder to Put Down.......2004-09-12
In the future, Elvis Presley has become a religious figure. Like all events in history, certain details have become distorted over time. Agents time travel back to the Fifties to find the original Elvis in an alternate universe and kidnap him. Author Womack has done his homework, and he clearly is an Elvis fan. His details are based on real events found in any Elvis biography and his insights on Presley's behavior are accurate. Unfortunately, "Elvissey" is written in a style similar to "Clockwork Orange". How can you go to the next chapter when you can't be sure you understood what you just read? If the language had been simplified, this book would have been incredible. Most people will probably give up after the first chapter, but I had to find out what happened. If you like Elvis and Science Fiction, get this book.
Jack Womack Is Too Clever For His Own Good.......2003-03-23
This is a hard book to read, similar to Clockwork Orange. The language is so abstract that you have to continuously attempt to understand what is being said you know what is going on. I struggled though it and I liked it, but it could have been so much better if it had been simplified. Most people will give up.
Brilliant Look At A Sinister Media Culture Future.......2001-09-08
"Elvissey" is the first Jack Womack novel I have read; I eagerly look forward to reading the rest. Without a doubt, Womack is one of the most interesting writers to emerge out of science fiction since William Gibson hit the stage with his brilliant "Sprawl" short stories, culminating with his amazing "Cyberspace" trilogy of novels. He's certainly among the most bizarre stylists I've come across, echoing Anthony Burgess' "A Clockwork Orange" with his own poetic usage of Dryco's newspeak. "Elvissey" is a brilliant satire of our own obsession with rock and roll stars and other transient entertainment celebrities. It is also a fascinating look at how a psychologically troubled couple from 2054 meet a homicidal Elvis Presley in an alternative 1954. Equally appealing is how Elvis struggles to cope with his new found fame in 2054, after learning he is regarded as a saint by millions of adoring fans. I strongly emphasized with Isabel "Iz" Bonney's struggle to hold onto her sanity as her health and her relationship with John, her psychotic husband, dissolve through the course of the novel. Anyone expecting another excursion into William Gibson's "Cyberspace" future may be disappointed; Womack isn't quite as visionary as Gibson, though his prose is just as poetic. Instead, prepare yourself for a startling fresh, unique view of what a media-dominated future might look like.
SHOULDN'T BE YOUR FIRST WOMACK.......2001-04-07
Elvissey is my second-least-favorite of the Dryco Chronicles series ( we'll see where it ranks after Going, Going, Gone hits my mailbox ), but not for the reasons you might expect. Allow me to explain.
It was the first Jack Womack book I ever bought - the Gibson blurb on the back sold me - but I couldn't understand a word of it and shelved it. Somehow, a year later, I wound up with a used copy of Terraplane. I had to re-read the first chapter three times to make sense of the language, but eventually I put everything together; now it's probably my favorite. This led me to collect his other books from used bookstores, and then finally to tackle Elvissey.
Elvissey is a remarkable achievement, particularly in its funhouse-mirror distortion of the the 1954 we knew on our planet. Having said that, it's also by far the most depressing of Womack's books. Which is saying something. The odyssey of pregnant security operative Isabel and her psychologically-unraveling husband John leads them to an American South where black people no longer exist and Elvis killed his mother. Their return to 2054, and subsequent attempted conversion of Elvis into a corporate messiah, is utterly heartbreaking. This is the Womack book which I've only re-read once.
First-timers should read Womack's books in this order: Random Acts of Senseless Violence, Heathern, Ambient, Terraplane, Elvissey. You'll gradually come to understand everything about the strange future Womack paints, and recognize recurring characters.
Enjoy the ride. You won't forget it.
Unbeatable!.......2001-02-01
"Elvissey" is a wacky, haunting (and occasionally terrifying) novel--one of most original and uniquely affecting novels I've ever read. Womack's vision is fresh, thoughtful and touched by an studious eye for the bizarre. The plot, in essence, is pretty straight-forward: members of a scheming, dystopian near-future travel back in time to kidnap Elvis Presley, who has achieved posthumous god-status. The protagonists try to present the future-shocked King to the people of the future to satiate their escalating craving for a messiah. But what does Elvis think of his role in this scheme? And is time-travel really as easy as a century's worth of science fiction would have us think? Womack's answers to these questions make "Elvissey" the delight it is. William Gibson has called this novel "a jarringly potent kick in the head." What else is there to say?

A good buy.......2000-12-12
Sierra's MissionForce: CyberStorm is an early turn-based RTS game set in the EarthSiege Universe. The plot is: You are the head of the Battle Department for the UniTech Consortium, a giant, inter-galactic corporation. The Earth's government pays UniTech to protect Earth from the Cybrids, evil techno-aliens like the Borg from 'Star Trek'. Not only do you have to drive them from Human space, but you must set up bases and mines, in order to fund your corporation. In your campaign, you will use HERCs, giant fighting robots piloted by genetically-engineered clones called 'BioDerms'. In the game, you have to repair, update, and protect your base, while keeping your fleet of HERCs and BioDerms ready for the next campaign. I liked the Strategy Guide, not only because it gave out hints and strategies (some of the missions were nearly impossible), but also because it gave out statistics for BioDerms, HERCs, weapons, shields, scanners, Cybrid units, etc. It was a great help on the battlefield-let me optimize my defense. I recommend it-it could be the difference between continuing Earth's legacy of galactic expansion and human genocide at the hands of the Cybrids!

In Sierra On-Line's Cyberstorm 2, fame and fortune lie in the heavily contested Typhoeus star system. To get there, you'll have to lead your mechs ... umm ... HERCs into battle against rival corporations and their armies. This guide starts out by describing each of the competing corporations and provides a list of advantages and disadvantages of working for each. From that point on, the book provides a wealth of statistics, beginning with a thorough description of each planet in the game. A brief discussion of Bioderms, what they are, and how to use them follows. After that, it's back to the statistics. The next 50 pages are devoted to the game's many HERC types and their various capabilities. More stats follow the HERC discussion, with every type of weapon, armor, shield, drive system, and internal system broken down into lists and tables. The rest of the book provides some good information on base management and multiplayer strategies. --Michael Ryan

Book Description
From Chile to California, South Africa to Alsace, Ralph Steadman has seen the best of the world's wine-producing regions. On a search for the unique and original, he meets Aurelio Montes, the Chilean winemaker who planted syrah vines on a rocky, south-facing hill in order to "steal the wild complexity of the mountain's soul." In Spain, he learns of the white chalky soil called albariza that produces the sherry of the Jerez region. In California, the author describes crossing the Golden Gate Bridge, driving up into Marin County, and meeting enthusiastic winemakers whose vineyards sit precariously on the San Andreas fault. As the journey continues on through Burgundy, Champagne, and Sicily, Steadman brings the landscape and its people to life with pictures and prose.
Customer Reviews:
A coffee table book you'll actually read cover-to-cover.......2006-10-17
Few people today remember that Ralph Steadman grew to fame for his Gonzo art that complemented some rather famous Gonzo journalism. Today, his is arguably best known for his art that complements wine bottles, as well as a number of wine books published over several decades.
In Untrodden Grapes, his latest book, we get to read and see a number of small wineries through his artist's eyes. Focusing on small but premium producers (hence the title) from around the world, Ralph intersperses his personal editorial on the state of today's wine world along with descriptions and renderings of what he's seen.
A great read for wine lovers, and well worthwhile for anyone who enjoys the intersection of memorable art and great writing.
Once again - brilliant!.......2005-12-23
Steadman has outdone himself with this latest book of narrative and artwork. You will be taken on a tour of the wine producing areas of the world, portraying the author's love of the drink. Each story is highlighted with artwork as further interpretation. I especially enjoyed the account of a bottle of wine's ability to transform a mountain of greasy fish, chips and extra peas at a local chip shop to a culinary masterpiece. The writing is honest, expressive, humorous and straight-forward. Those who appreciate a witty turn of phrase will be delighted. Those too drunk on wine to notice will wonder why they feel suddenly lighter.
The artwork is quintessentially Steadman. If you are not familiar with his work, you need to be sure to approach this book with an open mind - as it is not for the faint of heart. Figures can be what some would describe as ugly - maybe even grotesque, there are great splatterings of ink and often quite a bit of mayhem. But, the overall effect is intoxicating with rich colors and visually shocking contrast.
I have collected and appreciated Ralph Steadman's work for over 20 years now, and like any good wine, he just keeps getting better.
