Book Description
A beautiful collection of the work of contemporary artist Louise Lawler, who, for the past twenty years, has photographed art as it is situated and displayed, whether in private homes, public buildings, or museums, galleries, and auction houses. From an exhibition of Degas's materpieces to an Andy Warhol installation, this book invites you to discover Lawler's unique vision of modern and contemporary art. Lawler is fascinated by what "happens" to the art object after it leaves the artist's studio - where it goes, how it's displayed, how it's valued, what it means. In a Lawler photograph taken in a private home, the furnishings and objects surrounding the art are given as much attention as the art; in a museum, the view out of a window next to the artwork; in an auction house, the label identifying the artwork. Her striking and provocative photographs show us how the environment that surrounds it affects our perception of art and how it in turn affects all aspects of that environment.

1960 Ryufusha Publishing, Hardcover. 32 Pages. "Ikebana" (flower arrangement) of the Sogetsu School we are studying has especially rich artistic characteristics among those of the various schools of japanese flower arrangement, not to mention the fact that arrangements of this school should be the original work of the student in which he has shown his own individuality, This book contains thirty-two typical japanese flower arrangements in original colour, which display the technique and artistry particular to the author, together with his deep love of Nature. For the people who wish to use this book as a reference text for their arrangements, a brief diagram is printed by the side of each arrangement showing its structure. The marks of o)signifying the first stem usually called "Shin"), * (the second stem called "Soe"), * (the third stem called "Hikae"), and T (signifying subordinate branches called "Jushi") are the signs peculiar to the Sogetsu School, adopted for showing the structure of an arrangement.

Not self taught well enough!.......2006-07-22
What self-taught fashion illustrators/designers probably do not understand is that the fashion flat illustration is ESSENTIAL to the fashion industry! You can render the most beautiful fashion figures, but they won't tell manufacturers a damn thing about how to produce the actual garment - the fashion flat with all of the appropriate details (stitch lines, pocket and button placement, etc) is how we as designers communicate with the actual people producing the garment.
This book is a great tool for beginning designers! Learning to design with fashion flats will not only make you a better and more efficient designer, but also help you to communicate your ideas, and give you a better understanding of how garments are actually constructed.
Do not be swayed by those who believe that fashion is all about pretty drawings.
it's not the best, but i guess it works somewhat.......2002-06-20
i had to buy this book for a class in my fashion design program. i thought it was a huge ... when i bought it. it's an absorbitant amount of money for pages that look like they have been photocopied and put together cheaply with one of those flimsy plastic book binding things. i suppose that it was a bit helpful in understanding how to produce sketches for the industry. but, think i agree with the person who suggested the barbie sketching thing. just use a little imagination to picture your design drawn out like that.
This book really teaches fashion nomenclature.......1998-09-25
I am an architecture student who was very interested in entering the design world. I picked up this book on a lark and found that without a teacher I was able to master the art of fashion design. It also proved valuable in teaching me the proper names of specific details and silhouettes. As far as I am concerned it is one of the best books out there for understanding the specifics of fashion design while at the same time being entertaining. I give it a high 5.
Don't buy this book under any circumstances........1998-05-12
The authors of this book are pulling a huge scam on people who are interested in learning and/or enhancing their design skills. The information provided isn't even useful for a beginning designer.
My entire take on this book is "we're big shot designers and your NOT. So, you'll be happy to spend $54 plus dollars just to have a book we've taken the time to write." Who are these people, I've never heard of them! I have gotten better and more useful information from books that cost less. Well over half the book is filled with cheap looking line drawings of their designs, which the reader is to copy by tracing. If these were people with a good design sense, I wouldn't be so upset- but they aren't. If a person is looking to learn design in the method the authors "write" about, one would be better served to get a Fashion Trace Barbie Set for $15 bucks. It's the same thing, only Barbie doll designers have better sense of style. I know Amazon is looking to sell books. but this one is taking advantage of people.

4 1/2 Hilarious but Not Authentic.......2005-05-24
The varying opinions of this book may reflect readers' expectations. Those who want a humorous book based on the "THe Simpsons" will love it; but those who want something more true to the TV show's presentation will ultimately feel some disappontment. As I read through the opening town history (recounting city founder "Jedidiah Obediah Zachariah Obediah Springfield) and quickly advanced to typical tourist guide chapters such as attractions, where to eat (and especially, to drink), city events, etc., I enjoyed the mix of pointed social and political satire, idiosyncratic cast, and implied or retold story lines that have made "The Simpsons" probably one the truely great animated shows (as well as comedies, period). THe book is a condensed reminder of favorite settings (much more so than episodes), and the entire Springfield gestalt: crooked politicians, inept police, the polluting nuclear plant, and the wide spectrum of schemes hatched by both boy and father Simpson.
However, it increasingly became evident that this was not a history according to "The Simpsons"; rather, many elements had been embellished or simply made up just for this book. In a way, it's the same kind of anything-for-money cynicism that pervades the show, and one can't help but feeling some admiration for the guile of the author(s). (I could be wrong, but I assume it's written by a staff of writers under Groening's name.)
Purists will have mixed feelings about the book's inventions, especially when they don't match the spirit and the wit of the show. For example, Lisa is relatively absent, her brother seems more like a delinquent than the loveable ten-year-old semi-innocent persona in the show, and the essential qualities of people such as Ned Flanders, Moe, Mr. Burns, and many others are never truely captured. As a fan, I felt entertained yet somehow taken. At least that is a true Springfield experience.
The redeeming qualities of the town and its citizens (these are easy to forget, but "The Simpsons" attack on hypocracy is often achieved through the "growth," if you will, of at least one person) are often overlooked, and there are too many gratuitous jokes about sleaze and easy booze. If you'd never seen the Simpsons before, your expectations would be lowered. Other than this overall approach, the book is both funny and witty, the pictures and color reproduction are excellent, and there is enough authenticity to tide you over between shows. A very good book alone, but one that is a little disappointing when compared to its inspiration.
Better than Let's Go and Lonely Planet.......2003-10-09
This is an essential read and travelling companion for anybody intent on visiting the small town of Springfield whilst backpacking the USA. You will find information in here that you will not find in the other more well known backpacker books such as Let's Go and Lonely Planet. A complete accommodation listing complete with pictures and descriptions of everything from the history of the establishment to the staff and usual clientele, make picking your chosen place to sleep in Springfield so, so easy.
Attractions are extremely well covered as well with everything from the historical decaying monorail ruins to the Itchy and Scratchy studios. You won't miss out on a thing to see in Springfield if you take this book with you. Seriously you have to buy it. Want to read up on a bit of history to impress the locals? Well you can with this book. There are three pages detailing the founding of Springfield by Jebediah Springfield as well as the history of the two most influential men in Springfield's history, nuclear power tycoon C. Montgomery Burns and America's favourite entertainer Krusty the clown.
This guide also contains a complete listing of Springfield's options for food whether dining or just stopping for ice cream. Nightlife is covered as well with an inside guide by local raver Kirk Van Houten. Those who love shopping will not miss a thing either, every shop is within, in complete detail. Don't know when the best time is to plan your trip well then your in luck. This guide contains every annual event in Springfield from Whacking Day to the Do What You feel Festival. There is also a survival guide at the back. Low quality guides leave this sort of thing out in a hope not to discourage you from visiting thereby you will still purchase their book. Air pollution, animal rampages, runaway vehicles, citywide riots, and the Sideshow Bob factor to name but a few are all listed.
I have visited Springfield many a time. The people are friendly and unique. It is a must visit destination. No visit to the USA is complete without stopping in this town and no visit can be complete without this sensational guide. The other guides just can not compete with this brilliant guide. Don't wait, buy it now! Well go on!
A sure "keeper," well worth the money.......2003-08-10
The Simpsons Guide to Springfield is an excellent book. The format of the book is simple: You read it as if you were visiting Springfield as a tourist. You learn about local attractions, like the Noiseland Video Arcade and Springfield Hydroelectric Dam, places to stay, like the Sleep-Eazy Motel and Rancho Relaxo, places to eat, like Two Guys from Kabul and Jittery Joe's Coffee Shop, places for your nightlife, like The Aristocrat and Shotkickers, places to shop, like the Crypto Barn and Wicked Access, about Annual Events, like the Springfield Chili-Cook Off and Film Festival, and about dangerous happenings and people, like Sideshow Bob and radiation. Each place or thing or person has a detailed description. The book also has short essays by Dr. Hibbert, Kirk van Houten, Bart, Reverend Lovejoy, and more. There is a picture on almost every page, and hilarious captions. There is also information on rare artifacts in Springfield. This book is is sure buy for Simpsons fans.
A cute guide for the Simpsons fan.......2003-01-07
This book, disguised as a travelogue, is a cute tour of the city of Springfield that works best for seasoned fans of the "Simpsons" TV show. The producers have always shied away from having any set layout for Springfield, so don't expect to find any maps in here, any routes from the Simpson home to Springfield Elementary or anything like that. Instead, it's an amusing look at the various places that have made the show funny.
The book takes a lot of the show's minor jokes -- the two "Nick's" bowling shops in town, for instance -- and expands them slightly to have little entries for the "visitor" to Springfield.
People unfamiliar with the show won't get the point, but those of us who have watched and loved it for years will. The most fun in the book is reading the entry for a place or "artifact" and trying to recall which episode it was used in -- kind of geeky? Maybe. But still a blast for the Simpsons fan.

Praise for Be Smart, Act Fast, Get Rich
"Charles Payne's book is blunt, provocative, and right on the money. This book is a lot like Charles himself: insightful and to the point. If you have time to read only one book on how to make money . . . this is the book."
--Dr. Bob Froehlich, Chairman, Investor Strategy Committee Deutsche Asset Management, and Vice Chairman, DWS Scudder
"Be Smart, Act Fast, Get Rich is a book for all investors from first-time stock buyers to seasoned investors. 'Be Smart' suggests you understand the fundamentals of the company you are purchasing. 'Act Fast' suggests that action must be taken if you are going to increase your wealth in the stock market. All too often we find interesting ideas to invest in but never have the confidence to act, only to watch the stock's price rise while others reap the benefits. This book is an easy read, and a must-read for all investors."
--Tom Dorsey, President, Dorsey Wright & Associates and author, Point & Figure Charting
"You should buy this book just for the super job Charles does in explaining everything you need to know about charts, graphs, and the other 'voodoo' of technical analysis that he makes so simple to understand. Charles really gives you a street fighter's education in the markets . . . I wish his book was around twenty-five years ago . . . it would have saved me millions in market mistakes I've made."
--Tobin Smith, founder and Chairman, ChangeWave Research

BE SMART, ACT FAST, GET RICH.......2007-10-01
Countless times my friends and I would repeat the phrase "If we only had stock in a particular "hot" product that we would be rich." And sadly, not one of us has ever taken the initiative to find out how to actually get into the stock market because we thought only the wealthy could afford the risk of investing.
The author, Charles V. Payne, clearly wants folks to stop making the "fat cats" richer off our spending trends and learn how the stock market works by understanding the concept, the language, and game strategies to enrich our lives and reap those benefits. He "keeps it simple" and "keeps it real" in his thoroughly written, knowledgeable, and witty book, "Be Smart, Act Fast, Get Rich.". It's a winner.
The only way one can get in the stock market game is to play. And why not learn from one of the truly successful men on Wall Street, who hailed from humble beginnings. Throughout his book, as one turns and reads the pages, you can feel his tenacity as he vividly describes his life when he purchased his first mutual fund at age seventeen and later started his own company.
Mr. Payne's book should be required reading for all high school and college seniors before they set out in the real world of financial dealings.
His book is not to be shelved, but used as a every day reference tool for those who delve into the stock market. It's a great gift for family and friends for the holidays, or any day.
Hindsight is 20/20 --count my friends and I in!
The Real Deal.......2007-09-12
This book is truly an educational tool for novices, pros, and anyone in between.Mr.Payne doesn't overwhelm you with sophisticated jargon instead he gives you precious gems in plain English. The explanations for charts and how they should fit into an investors strategy are priceless.I like the way this book approaches the mental aspects of stock investing and the discipline that needs to be exercised. This book isn't for daytrading or options gambling but what this book shows that many others don't is that you can build wealth in a steady manner by being smart, acting fast using the right knowledge and mentality. The stock market market isn't just for the big boys and insiders, it's for anyone who desires more out of life and is willing to work for it.
Fundamentals to live by.......2007-07-25
This book outlines practicle straight forward market knowledge written to focus investors on core fundamentals. Charles discusses this in lay persons terms while pointing out the function of the market from both sides of the street. The good, bad and the ugly. I've been investing for 15 years and it was a terrific tune up confirming many of the things I was doing right as an investor while providing clarity on lapses in my investing habits. This is a must read for all investors.
Get in the Stock Market: It is a Life Long Endeavor.......2007-07-12
As a small investor I work hard to keep track of future market trends. I found Mr. Payne's book to assist me in this endeavor. It logically organized, well written, but most of all an enjoyable read.
The author communicates the point that the stock market is a life long endeavor but most importantly to 'get in the game' because as trends show, the stock market goes up over time.
We also enjoy Charles on Fox News Saturday morning. We are very happy to have our point of view so eloquently presented.
A LOT OF WORDS AND LITTLE VALUE.......2007-07-10
This is a very disappointing book. Charles starts off right, talking about investing rather than trading (99% of us should do the former), but then spends a lot of time talking about trading techniques, chart formations, rumors and short term issues. Even when he talks about the fundamental analysis for finding stocks, he does not seem to be sure exactly what is the key item for asset slection. The charts are just terrible.
He could have written a much better book with half the pages.
In summary, it is a lot of rambling by a guy who is a good talker.
If you want some good books buy Ken Fisher's, "The Only Three Questions, ..." and Joel Greenblatt's "The Little Blue Book...."

Would You Believe That This Is The Greatest Book In The Universe?.......2006-08-30
Uhhhh...how about the second greatest book in North America... how about a really good book on one of the greatest television comedies ever created?
'Get Smart' had a good five year run from 1965-1970. I never really saw it when it first aired...at least not that I can remember. I was only five years old when they took it off the air. But even though I may not have watched it when it was first on, I do remember very clearly the first time I ever saw it in the form of a rerun.
I was nine years old and I came home from school. My mother had recently passed away and my dad was at work trying to keep food on the table and clothes on our backs. My little brother was at pre-school and my two older sisters' were in junior high so I pretty much had the house to myself for a couple of hours until everyone started coming home. I turned on the television to channel 13...in Los Angeles at the time it was KCOP..now it's UPN or somethin' like that...and this show came on with this funny little man all dressed up in a suit going into a building through a series of doors and then walking down a long corridor to a payphone vestibule. He goes inside, puts a coin in the slot and he dissapears from sight.
Well, these opening credits really piqued my curiosity. "What is this about?" I mean, even the name had a hold of me, "Get Smart". The show began and I quickly learned of Maxwell Smart, secret agent 86, his partner, agent 99...who I thought and still feel that she was one of the most beautiful women I had ever seen...and the chief. These were the good guys and they worked at an organization called CONTROL. They were in the business of getting the bad guys who were also spies but their organization was known as KAOS. Makes sense, huh?
And in that small little half hour, something truly magical began to happen. Y'see, I was a lonely little boy. I lost my mom to cancer, things really weren't going well at home, I constantly felt ill and under the weather, but this show really made me laugh and smile. It almost gave me a reason to continue on. Everyday, I'd race home trying to catch the second episode they aired during the hour of 2-3PM.
I began using all the little catch phrases that were on the show. If my dad asked me why something wasn't done, I'd break into the "Would you believe?" schtick. I quoted that show to anyone who'd listen. It was that show that really helped me break out of my shell as a sad little boy.
When Don Adams passed away last year at the age of 81, it felt like the passing of an old friend. I actually cried. I even had a few regrets that I somehow didn't make any kind of attempts to write to him personally telling him how his wonderful show helped me to laugh and smile when things didn't feel too good on the homefront.
This is a great book. I just find myself flipping through it at random and reading a little bit here and a little bit there and as great as this book is, I still feel as though something is missing for the true 'Get Smart' addict like myself...a boxed set of remastered GET SMART DVDs! C'mon now...why haven't they put these things out already? You would think that the people who have the rights to these would put these out while there is still a market who would gladly plunk their money down for a set because we are rapidly running out of people who remember this show.
And while I'm on a rant...why did Nick at Night take Get Smart off their schedule? Oh, sure, they can run the cheesy Brady Bunch ad nauseum, but where is Maxwell Smart and Agent 99? Where is Seigfried and Schtaker? One of the greatest joys I ever had as an uncle was when my niece Lauren, at the age of 13, became a Get Smart nut just like me and she could have only done it through the reruns on Nick at Night.
Now, I'm sad. Now I need a Get Smart fix. I guess I'll turn back to the book and remember a show that was brilliantly written, brilliantly cast, and served up more genuine laughter in five short years than the show, Friends' could in 11.
BRING IT BACK! BRING IT BACK! BRING IT BACK!
Totally wonderful.......1999-10-02
This is a great book. If you love Get Smart, you'll love this! This and the Life and Times book are great and feature interviews with the cast and the producers. A must for you GS fans and collectors!
It was a smash if you like comedy and Get Smart ,of course........1999-05-27
This was a great all time book... but it could of gotten more into depth with agent 13 and the cheif but I loved it if i could rate it in 1/2 it would of been a 4 half ... cause of the details with the minor characters

Don't get sick during your hospital stay... A comprehensive guide to maximizing the benefits of a hospital stay and how to use the entire health care system, especially the doctor-patient relationship, to improve well-being.
Customer Reviews:
An Essential Resource for Patients and Family........2003-10-11
As a clinician involved in patient care and discharge planning, I see every day the fear and upset people experience when they enter the hospital setting. They are strangers in a strange land, unfamiliar with "medicalese" jargon, institutional routine, policies and procedures, insurance issues and basic knowledge of the human body's complexity. Their bodies are failing, and, for the most part, their lives rest in the hands of strangers. In short they are terrified.
Joseph Sacco's Hospital Handbook goes a long way in demystifying the experience, and explaining to the lay person how to make sense of and negotiate the medical system. It is also an essential resource for understanding the most common diseases, ailments and conditions from which the hospitalized patient suffers, and their treatments.
Everyone knows that it is always best to be an educated consumer, regardless of the product. Health care is a universal product, and to remain ignorant on the subject could literally cost you your life. I keep Joseph Sacco's Hospital Handbook in both my personal and professional libraries. I refer patients to it constantly, and I have given away several copies as gifts to my most cherished friends.
In addition to patients or potential patients, I would recommend this book to hospital social workers, who are in the bizarre and uncomfortable position of being both the patient's advocate and the hospital's discharge planner. The information in the Hospital Handbook is invaluable to that often under-resourced group, who have to assist the hospitalized patient in making profound decisions about life during and after the hospital stay.
No hospital social worker should be without it.
It helped my Aunt survive her stay at the hospital.......2003-10-07
When my aunt was put in the hospital none of my family knew what to do for her, this book helped us through the whole thing. Even i understood it. We tried other books but they all made it so we had know idea what they were talking about it. (...)
Don't Go In the Hospital Without This Book.......2003-09-23
I bought this book when my father was admitted to the hospital with pneumonia. It proved an invaluable tool in helping me undestand the maze of the in-hospital stay and, as a result, I was able to advocate much more effectively for my father, ensuring a safer, shorter hospital stay. It's packed full of concrete advice and written in an easy to understand conversational tone. I found the chapter on pain management to be especially helpful. I'd highly recommend this book to anyone anticipating a hospital stay or to the loved one of a patient already in the hospital.
