Book Description

Graham Hettlinger's brilliant translations of Bunin's stories in Sunstroke (2002) were widely acclaimed. In The Elagin Affair, Mr. Hettlinger continues to acquaint English-language readers with a Bunin they may not have appreciated. The Elagin Affair contains two of the author's greatest novellas, the title piece and Mitya's Love, as well as a broad range of stories written between 1900 and 1940 and centered on themes of love, loss, and the Russian landscape, including several of Bunin's most haunting stories from his final collection, Dark Avenues.

5 out of 5 stars Powerful and Unique Russian Stories.......2005-10-15

I loved this book. Bunin's lush stories reveal a Russia that even the great geniuses of Russian literature have never quite depicted. His descriptions of physical experience are almost intoxicating, and his careful attention to the vivid details of Russian culture and customs reveal a new side of that country to English langauge readers. I have read Bunin in other translations, but they, by comparison to this one, were awkward and stiff. Here Bunin's sentences move with true elegance.

Descendant still up again Andromedans, this time with Kirlian possession.

Kirlian agents of the enemy have worked up how to basically do a fair bit of mind control and bodysnatching via Kirlian transfer. To combat this the humans have set Melody of Mintaka to work, a woman with a massive Kirlian aura rating who is able in turn to take over those infiltrators.

Throw in some space fleets, and tarot, and you have a reasonably entertaining book.

4 out of 5 stars How the galaxy was Saved.......2000-01-27

The adventure of the tarot continues. Being the second Cluster book, it is a story of saving the galaxy. A place where creatures can transfer without limitations. Melody must save the Milky Way Galaxy, being the vidle link between technology. She must survive in worlds unknown, alien to her. She surives where others fail, her aura completing her. The book is lucid, but is not as good as the prequil. I think the best quality the book has are the characters. Nearly all are amazing, from Slammer to Hammer to Melody in their various bodies. Four out of five star.

3 out of 5 stars Very good, until the epilogue........1999-04-14

This the second book in Piers Anthony's Cluster sci-fi series. It expands on the Tarot theme found in the first volume (and also in the Tarot series). This book is one of Anthony's first from almost entirely the female point of view, and he does a good job overall. The action is great, with many plot twists and tense moments. The problem is the epilogue, in which Anthony conducts one of his typical experiments in the psychology of sex. He equates friendship between females with sexual love in a way that turned me off. If you can swallow this, you will love the book. If not, you will be disgusted. If it were not for the epilogue, I would have given it 4 stars.

5 out of 5 stars Space Opera, combat and a hostage situation.......1997-08-12

This is the story of Melody of Mintaka, an old neuter who resembles nothing more than a crazy pipe organ. Set apart by the amazing strength of her Aura, she is the only trustworthy being in the Milkyway Galaxy. Why? The greedy beings from Galaxy Andromeda have tipped the power balance and are possessing the Milkyway's most powerful people. Placed in the body of a buxom young woman, she must seek out the enemy hostages. How? With the imagery evoked by the Tarot. The story flows smoothly, steadily builds suspense and reaches a mind breaking climax. The descriptions are evocative, the dialog believable and the story sound. This is an edge-of-your-seater during the last half of the book. Its an all around good read for Sci-Fi fans. Wait until you see the Magnets!

                  1 out of 5 stars Ugh.......2007-03-06

This is one of the worst books I've ever read; and I've read William Shatner's works.

This book is mainly high value/demand due to low printing and because it was the first Battletech novel.

4 out of 5 stars The Link Novel.......2007-01-11

This is the link novel from when FASA published the Battletech books themself to when ROC/Penguin took over and the order of books got mixed up

2 out of 5 stars The Beginning .......2006-12-07

This is somewhat of an anomaly book compared to the plethora of Battletech fiction. Of the earliest tomes, the story sets the stage for ramifications based around the Successor Houses and the intrigue thereof. However, the story does not heavily character develop, nor does it seek to explore multiple fronts of Successor House politics compared to later books. Really, it is a short story translated to novel length. The importance of the book is debatable as the events that follow pretty much explain the whys and wheres. However, for miscellaneous interest, the book has some worth, as one of the earliest forms of Battletech fiction if nothing else.

The caveat though is the book has a definite flavour that is NOT what Battletech ended up becoming under Stackpole, et al. influence. The book is somewhat less pervaded with the notion of "Good vs. Evil" that runs amok in Stackpole works and in that light, does its job. The character development is glacial, but is there, though as any first book, it tends to be more of an overview edition rather than a microscopic exploration. Certainly, the development though is likely to be disappointing compared to most other writers.

The notion of "western-esque" aspects could very well be correct. A close examination of the Warrior Trilogy, compared to this book, brings the objective examiner to the conclusion that Stackpole likely read far too much Flash Gordon and generally the Asian-influenced enemies of Stackpole books appear as laughable "Ming The Merciless" characters and continue a very objectionable stereotype. Stackpole is responsible for a great deal of the Succession War/Pre Clan era development despite the rumors of the story arc being laid out far in advance. He has said so himself. Yet, it should be noted, that the "East Evil - West Good" aspect was and is present even in this book to some degree, but holds none of the idiotic stereotyping pervading Stackpole's works. While every success of Battletech owes something to Stackpole, it also is reduced by continual "eon's time in a paragraph summary" habit which detracts more than enriches.

The Sword and the Dagger, in comparison, while dry, comes about as more a "flat plate" war story of a tad more grey game universe. The likely cause is few of the concepts of the modern Battletech universe were yet developed and aside from the technical characteristics, many of the initial universe characters were very one-dimensional. Indeed, a number of the characters in this book are not mentioned or seen again or even explored in later works. However, importantly, each side/faction involved in the "Sword and the Dagger" shows levels of resourcefulness and ability which is different from Stackpole's "one side wins all." Thus, further realism is acheived.

One thing this books excels at (as mentioned), more than any other of the following Battletech series, is the invasion sequence during the beginning of the story. The forces are balanced, surprise is backed logical reasoning, and the characters generally seem like real military personnel rather than the larger-than-life munchiness of the more recent books. When writing, that is a feature that is hard to acheive simply because the writer wishes that his characters have appeal - that one single quality alone means this book should rank higher than it does.

As to the relative worth, it is up the reader. I was not all too pleased to have spent five times the worth of the book only to find out that it did not overly appeal to me. So, it depends on the potential buyer and/or reader to come to his/her own conclusion as to whether the book is a sword or merely a dagger.

                  1 out of 5 stars A response to the Anti-Stackpole-er Above.......2002-08-27

An interesting choice of words, to call Stackpole western-esque. Aside from it being an arbitrary remark, I also find the validity of your praise to Bill Keith among others. I will say, Battletech is best served with a healthy dose of seriousness. Political and emtional climaxes and plot developments are were the forementioned authors excell. These new battletechs, while a good effort, fail to capture the real magic that Stackpole created with the "main characters" i.e. Victor, Kai, the Kells, the Steiners. Yes, anyone could read into this kind of character development as 'generic', but isn't that what we as humans love to see? The good vs. the evil and the justice so incurred? Katrina Steiner deserves to be punished and I want Victor to send her to prison. And you forget, the outline for the battletech universe was planned without and even before Stackpole's involvement with the series, so to say that his play to divide the characters by ethnicity is completely in error. There are some that think Stackpole had much less to do with Battletech's success than often said. I am, however, inclined to strongly disagree. Stackpole's novels possess a level of imagination and depth that most writers can never attain. He develops a love between the readers and the characters, and you care about their destinys. Whatever anyone else says, although some authors may write about Victor or omi or Kai or Clan Wolf, Stackpole could have done it better.

3 out of 5 stars Average book, but c'mon people STACKPOLE [disappoints].......2002-04-21

Like an earlier reviewer said, this book is average, but I'm SICK of hearing how Stackpole is a good writer. PLEASE! The best authors in the B-Tech Universe are unquestionably Robert Charrette, Bill Keith and Loren Coleman. And for what its worth, the whole 'clone Hanse' was pretty novel in 87, but Stackpole copied it half-a-dozen times and he just basically went with the Western-esque states, i.e. Davion and Steiner, and made them the "good guys" and the Asian ones, Kurita and Liao, the "bad guys". I can't reiterate how much he [disappoints] as a writer. Please, read Charrette, Keith, Coleman, Gressman or Pardoe over Stackpole, they are all INFINITELY better! Also, I really wish someone would folow up on Kubasik's book, there isn't much out there on House Marik...

                      4 out of 5 stars A very useful book........2006-07-08

Eduard Wagner is also the author of the classic Cut and Thrust Weapons, which is out of print and expensive. This book is an excellent alternative. It includes Wagner's wonderful line drawings, which frequently surpass photographs in terms of usefulness in identifications. Many American sword collectors will reason that they don't need this book: they are wrong. It is excellent for the understanding of the origins of American swords, as well as identifying swords that might be incorrectly identified as American. It is a wonderful source of information on what are otherwise obscure swords.

                        1 out of 5 stars A disgrace.......2007-08-01

I have never seen a published nonfiction book by an author more ignorant of his subject.

Many other reviewers have pointed out Weland's inaccuracies on land swords, and it falls to me only to point out that his chapter on sea swords is no better.

Page 58: a captured "vessel could be dismantled and sold off to help pay the expenses of the successful navy." Of course, money from sold captures did not go to pay the navy'e expenses, but was given as a reward to the captain, officers and crew who made the capture, as an incentive for performance.

Page 62: "[B]y the time cutlasses had appeared, the hey-day of pirates was long past." This would certainly come as a surprise to such famous Golden Age pirate captains as Bonnet, L'Ollonais, Kidd, and Fly, all of whom are documented in contemporary sources as using cutlasses. Not to mention the judges of the Old Bailey during the same time period, who frequently found themselves judging assault, robbery, and murder cases involving cutlasses.

Page 63: Weland informs us that swords that are not curved are "useless for cutting." While a curved blade is indeed ideal for cutting, Weland's exaggeration would consign to uselessness such famous cutting weapons as the Scottish basket-hilted broadsword, the two-handed sword, and the medieval military longsword, all of which had straight edges.

Page 69: Weland misidentifies the Dutch writer Alexandre Esquemeling as a Londoner.

But the crowning error is right at the beginning. On page 9, in describing the parts of a sword handle, Weland completely misidentifies the ricasso! This is an error as fundamental, and as discrediting, as a driving instructor misidentifying the turn signal.

1 out of 5 stars Incomplete and inaccurate.......2005-08-18

Not only is this rife with errors as other reviewers have mentioned, but it completely glosses over Asian edged weaponry and labels it as "mediocre" and "uninteresting".

The book should not be sold as a guide or as a handbook or as anything short of an incomplete and inaccurate school report on European weaponry.

                        2 out of 5 stars Better as a coffee-table book than a research source..........2002-02-03

If this is the first book on collecting swords that you get, make sure that you get a second and a third before you even -think- of going shopping. If this were the only guide that you were to bring with you into the world of sword collecting, there is a good chance you will embarrass yourself in front of even slightly knowledgeable dealers. Throughout the book, the proofreading is poor; that is, if it was proofread. Numerous captions are incorrect, and the authors research and conclusions are questionable at best. Conversely, this book does have some excellent photographs (many of which I have never seen elsewhere). Given the inexpensive price, it is worth purchasing for that reason alone.

3 out of 5 stars A Collectors Guide to Swords, Daggers, and Cutlasses.......2002-01-13

This book should have been titled a historical analysis of Swords, Daggers, and Cutlasses. It gives a working basic knowledge of edged weapons. However there is no pricing information to be found in this book.
It has many excellant pictures of edged weapons. However it gives a limited perspective of each catagory which leaves the reader salivating for more.

3 out of 5 stars At least the pictures are good, but ..........1999-01-20

This book is decent, but I question its accuracy. Its best section is on cutlasses and naval weapons. The pictures are good, but woefully mislabled. (E.g..- the lables for a page with five daggers is supposed to read clockwise from the top. In fact, the labels are completely mixed up.) Also, some categories lack even sketches of the weapons (e.g.-the Indian bhuj) and his verbal description makes no sense. Overall the book will fill out a weapons library, but I would recommend Anthony North's "Swords and Hilt Weapons" for starting out.

This reference focuses on the grossly overlooked area of edged weapon collecting--the Third Reich's edged weapon accouterments. The text and photos fill the present void of factual information on the hangers, frogs and knots used to complement German WWII era edged weaponry. A large format allows a study of minute detail. 62 pages of previously unpublished photos and color plates.

Over the years I have let a number of swords pass through my hands, keeping one or two and letting some of the others go, until I decided to go into it a bit more deeply and borrowed this book to see if I had let a fortune pass through my hands.

This book gave me the answer to most of my questions, particularly as it has a price guide as well (but this soon becomes dated) and I really only used it as a guide because book prices and what you can actually get on the open market are usually two different things.

What did surprise was the number of different kinds of swords there are and the quality and workmanship that goes into some of them, mostly ceremonial swords, with etched blades and god wire woven into the hilt. Wht did come across loud and clear was the price that some of these weapons are now fetching. A swords that you could have picked up for £10-£20 thirty years ago is now in the low hundreds. As an aid to identification the book is a useful tool for the enthusiast, although it is not cheap, but what is these days.

2 out of 5 stars Should be called: barely antique Swords & Daggers with astronomical prices.......2006-12-29

Being an avid collector and connoisseur of Islamic and Indonesian Arms and Armor, I picked this book, based off of the cover design. Although the book is fully illustrated and well layed out, I had no confidence in the information after the first couple of pages. The author often, and when I say often, I mean 80% of the time, claims swords and daggers to be at least 19th century. This is not the case. Many of the Daggers featured in this book are recently made for the tourist market in Indonesia and India. You can tell by the style of Koftgari technique fairly easy with just a little bit of knowledge on the subject. This also includes Victorian European swords. The prices are off the charts. I laughed when I saw fairly plain Keris daggers, plain dha swords and beat up talwars estimated at over $1500. Now, the author is not selling these pieces (yet), these are just estimated prices.

Perhaps if a few zeros were taken off the prices, that would be more realistic. I would not recommend this book. In fact, for the first time using amazon, I am sending mine back for a refund. I would however recommend anything by Elgood, Figiel, Robinson etc for Islamic ...and Albert Zonneveld's recent book for Indonesian.

I own quite a bit of cookbooks, and already this is tattered from kitchen use. My husband and daughter love the desserts in this book. It takes a little extra time but the carrot cake is excellent. So is the Italian pot roast. I'm a tweaker when it comes to receipes, but I didn't with this book!

OK, I couldn't help it. I was browsing for another of Sandra Woodruff's books and decided to add my two cents. I have used this book for 8 years. While dieting I have fended off ravenous family members who swore they would not touch "diet food" with a ten foot pole, yet devour the fat free pizza, calzones, chicken enchiladas, and sticky buns like they were in heaven. My son is now almost 19 and still loves this food. Sandra Woodruff has a gift for making healthy food everyone's preferred choice.

I've had this book for nearly ten years. The reason I'm looking at it again online is because I've used it to pieces, literally! I need a new one because mine is faded and falling apart. My family loves the recipes. Many are traditional like lasagne and chicken enchiladas and many are newer, more creative ideas. Honestly, we don't cook the recipes as fat-free. We live in Germany and fat-free food doesn't exist here so we cook with normal cheese, sour cream, tomato sauce, etc. and they taste wonderful. I use this book more than any of the others. There's a vegetarian section, side dishes, etc. They all taste great. You can't go wrong with this cookbook because it has a nice twist from the traditional Betty Crocker recipes.
