Book Description
When Brendan McPhelan and his ill-tempered wife begin highly contentious divorce proceedings, Brendan's only goal is to get custody of his children. Brendan ingeniously invents the Dakapa Adventurers Club as a way to spend more time with his kids. Only then does the real adventure begin!
The chapter had as many activities as necessary and they were always set up at times when I would not otherwise have seen the kids. The meetings were held in my apartment and we used the time to do school work or play games or just sit around and talk. The trips were the best part. We replaced our T shirts with Dakapa sweatshirts as the weather got colder and visited the Liberty Science Center, Medieval Times, the Watchung Reservation, the Paper Mill Playhouse, the circus, an Aquarium and anywhere else we felt like going. That wasn't an easy year in our lives but I always tried to make sure that the Dakapa Adventurers Club was something that Paddy and Kate could look forward to. The time that you get to be a kid is much too brief and if I could wish them just one thing it would be to have as many happy childhood memories as I do.

E N G R O S S I N G.......2006-11-18
Mr. Whelan's "fictional" account of his divorce from the illogical Illiana is all at once heartbreaking, frustrating, humorous and ultimately triumphant. I enjoyed the easy style in which it was written. No pretense or fluff - just enough attention to detail to set the stage and tell the story. I like his suggestion that all engaged couples should have to sit through an afternoon of family/divorce court before being wed. I'm still laughing about his purchase of a taco bell uniform on ebay and appearance in it before the mediator - funny stuff. A worthy read.........
The fury of Allah and Hezbollah onto you Tom Whelan !!!!!.......2006-10-12
Blasphemy !! We will never surrender to Israel and we will never give in to right wing American infidels like Mr. Whelan. The Fatwa has been issued and I will personally behead anyone caught with a copy of this book. We are coming for you Mr. Whelan. Your ex-wife has told us how to find you and we can reach you anywhere in the world. After repeated warnings about your writings you now have the nerve to collaborate with Manhattan filmaker Steven Kelly and write, produce and star in two movies?!?! (My African Uncle and EL Cuco -available soon from Freakish Intrigue LLC) DEATH TO YOU TOM WHELAN !! DEATH TO YOU TOM WHELAN !!
Dekapa Handbook-An Adventure to Read!.......2006-08-22
I recently finished The Dekapa Handbook and found it extremely entertaining and yet a book you can reflect on. Although I have not experienced divorce and custody battles I felt I fully understood how crazy that all can be after reading the book. It made me laugh a lot and at the same time as I was laughing I was thinking about how children must always come first and no matter what is going on children can always be happy if even one parent makes sure of it. It is a great read because Tom Whelan is funny and creative in his writing, yet you get the seriuosness of the whole matter. It keeps you thinking way after you have finished it! I am anxiuosly waiting for the sequel. I would suggest it to anybody looking for a book that makes you laugh hard and that makes you think and reflect on so many levels.
Pool-side read.......2006-05-17
Entertaining and true to life. Anyone who has been through a divorce can relate to Brendan's story. Perfect pool/beach read.
FANTASTIC A MUST READ!!!.......2006-05-17
This little book packs a HUGE wallop!!! What a clever and witty story line that makes you laugh out loud. It also shows you just how much a parent will do for their children. Loving and well written is just not enough to express the joy of this book. Please read it. This Jersey boy does not disappoint. Can't wait for the next one!

Book Description
"I am looking through the bars of my hospital bed at the faces of my wife and my two children. I am forty-seven years old and I am dying. I have less than three months to live and will not see my children grown or my grandchildren born. I have cancer." Those words begin a journey through a labyrinth of experimental drug treatments, misdiagnoses, and seven operations. To keep their sanity through long month of hospital treatments, and unknown to one another, each of the authors began to write. This is their story. It is a book which takes the reader through the private thoughts and experiences of family members as each struggles to deal with the impending death. Unlike may books written in similar situations, this book reads like a suspense novel. Many situations are funny and provide insight into the human spirit's undying optimism. Surviving the Storm is a story of love and of strength in the face of death, all the while confronting the reader with their own personal ghosts and fears. It is, above all, a life line of hope in a sea of hopelessness.

A MOVING GRIPPING STORY OF HUMAN STRUGGLE AGAINST ALL ODDS.......1999-03-29
I READ THIS BOOK FROM COVER TO COVER BARELY EVER PUTTING IT DOWN. IT IS ABOUT CANCER BUT IT COULD HAVE BEEN ABOUT ANY OTHER HUMAN STRUGGLE. IT IS ABOUT TWO PEOPLE, VERY MUCH IN LOVE, VERY BRAVE, AND VERY GIVING. NOT ONLY TO EACHOTHER BUT TO ALL OF THE OTHER MEMBERS OF THEIR FAMILY. THE STRUGGLE NOT ONLY WITH DISEASE BUT ALSO WITH TRYING TO PROTECT AND CARE FOR THEIR YOUNG FAMILY. TO SHELTER THEM AND AT THE SAME TIME TO INCLUDE THEM IN WHAT WAS HAPPENING WITHIN THE FAMILY. THERE ARE THE FINANCIAL REALITIES THAT ALL DISASTERS CREATE AND THERE IS ALWAYS THE STRUGGLE TO LOVE AND TO SURVIVE AS INDIVIDUALS AND AS A UNIT. THESE ARE PEOPLE TO ADMIRE AND TO GET TO KNOW. THEIR STRENGTH IS WORTH READING ABOUT AND KEEPING WITH US FOR FUTURE REFERENCE IF EVER NEEDED.
A realistic view of a families struggle with cancer.......1999-03-17
I found this book to be extremly moving and very well written. While reading this book I was able to experience the authors struggle with this deadly enemy that we all may face one day. I feel this account should be required reading for all families of cancer patients. It's also advised for all who enjoy a true love story. The best part was the happy ending.

Customer Reviews:
The final chapter (or is it?).......2005-02-26
In the first two Janissaries books we were introduced to Rick Galloway and his band of mercenary soldiers as they are kidnapped by aliens and transported to Tran, a world trapped in the middle ages, to grow illicit drugs for the aliens. We followed Galloway's adventures as he befriended the locals and tried to introduce technology to improve their lives and defend themselves against their enemies.
This final volume to the Janissaries series was a disappointment on a number of levels. Most significantly, while it does further develop the activities of the human servants of the alien civilization off of Tran, that part of the story is never brought to a conclusion. Also not resolved it the question of the preparations of the humans on Tran for the coming "Time." We are not provided with any closure on the question of whether the mercenaries will be able to prepare their new friends and allies to survive the coming conflict with the aliens.
The first two-thirds of this book delve deeply into the political intrique, and it is only in the last third that we return to the faster paced military story. Unfortunately, the book ends with the battle, without resolving any of the important plot lines. In many ways, it feels like another book was meant to follow this, but no such follow up seems to exist. It isn't clear why so much time was spent developing these plot lines if the ending was intended to leave them unresolved. The ending of the first book was much more satisfying, and that book can clearly stand on its own, but by the end of the third book, the reader deserves a more complete ending.
Please, Please, Finish the series!.......2001-11-17
This is a good series. I enjoyed all three books in the series, even if it did take quite awhile for the third one to be published. The worst part to this series is not knowing if the author is ever going to finish it. We were left hanging at the end of the third book. I hate it when authors leave a series of books unfinished.
Still Waiting for Green to Finish.......2001-06-08
Perhaps if enough of us let him know, Roland Green will finish this series, or turn it over to someone who will! He has left other series unfinished as well, especially the Wandor series. Come on Roland, you are an excellent storyteller, and create wonderful characters. Can't you finish a series? I won't even start Peace Company, since I understand you haven't completed that series either.
Otherwise, an excellent book, but you need to read the books in sequence to understand the background, and to understand why the characters make some of the choices they do. That's why Green is so good at character development, they act in a manner consistent with their backgrounds.
moderate sequel.......2000-06-19
Note that this was reprinted in 1996 together with "Janissaries 2: Clan and Crown" by Baen as "Tran".
This book is not in the same class as "Janissaries" (1), but still is a pageturner. A bit spoiled by intrigue of the nasty sort.
fascinating / dissapointing.......2000-01-08
After reading the first book I started looking for the other 2 "definitely out of print" in the series. I purchased both from Amazon, and I've read both like the first part: fascinated and(almost) without a stop from first to last word. I senced a growing disapointment while advancing in part 3 finding out the story does not come near an end. I any of you know of a part IV, let me know. I expect humanity to conquer the universe and would like to read about it . .

An important part of the Witch World saga.......2005-05-30
"Storms of Victory" is somewhere near the 20th book in Norton's popular Witch World series. It's also the first installment of the "Turning" trilogy, followed by "Flight of Vengeance" and "On Wings of Magic." As such, it sets the stage for a larger story, but "Storms of Victory" can be read alone. The book contains two separate novellas that come to a satisfactory conclusion by the end of this first volume.
I recommend "Storms of Victory" to any Witch World fan. If you're new to Witch World, this is not a bad place to dive in, but parts of it would be easier to understand if you've read previous books in the series.
...(VERY MINOR PLOT SPOILERS)...
The first tale, "Port of Dead Ships," was written by Andre Norton. A young Sulcar woman sets sail with Simon Tregarth, Jaelithe, and several other familiar Witch World characters to find out why so many ships have been found floating aimlessly, their crews mysteriously vanished. The expedition encounters assorted creepy creatures along the way, and finally an ancient evil that threatens to destroy them.
The second story, "Seakeep," was written by P.M. Griffin. Una has recently inherited the rule of a small territory named Seakeep. Suspecting that a neighboring ruler might be planning an invasion, Una hires a band of mercenaries called Falconers to protect her holdings. Unfortunately, the Falconers despise women. Una and the leader of the mercenaries struggle to work out their differences while identifying the pirates who have been wrecking ships along Seakeep's wild coastline.
Both books are decent fantasy stories with a strong sense of adventure and no profanity or scenes that might be inappropriate for younger readers. I rate them both as average, because although they tell an important part of the Witch World saga, neither of them is particularly compelling. This is not one of Norton's strongest stories. I found Griffin's book more intriguing, and her narrative style is much easier to read, but the story was somewhat simplistic and predictable.
A real page turner..........1998-03-09
This is a good book which helps to "flesh out" the period of time of the turning of WW. A must for every WW fan, it is a great read and wonderful addition to your library. I have read my copy of the turning trilogy several times.

Jumping Sharks in the Asteroid Belt -- and Beyond!.......2004-08-18
The second in the "Win Bear" detective / alternate history / political lecture series -- and right about where they jumped the shark. Lots of gadgetry and bizarre settings. Plenty of outlandish characters -- human and otherwise. Entirely too much eye-rolling Libertarian college sophomore bull session philosophizing.
What should not be missed is the most viciously funny caricature of pompous ol' Walter Cronkite in all of literature. (Easy to spot if you know what the German homonym of his last name means. And think "Jimmy Carter.")
Crime wasn't much of a problem........2004-02-05
Not in the North American Confederacy. Not until people start disappearing left and right. And Detective Win Bear's close friends start to vanish also.
At first he figures that some Hamiltonians might still be running about, but as the clues (or clews) start to pile up everything starts to point to the other side of the Probability Broach. But right when you'ld think things might start to clear up the Bear Curse kicks in and makes everything even worse- there seems to be TWO plots going on at the same time.
If Win Bear doesn't figure out what's happening, and fast, both universes might end up under the Iron Heel of a Totalitarian State!

Fast Fish.......2007-08-01
Good book with lots of easy to prepare recipes. Had a blast preparing some of the recipes.
Great & Easy Recipes.......2007-02-15
I love this book because it has easy to follow recipes with photographs. Something about pictures ~ I don't know it's more appetizing and appealing to make. There are recommendations for every type of common fish in alphabetical order. Excellent! We eat fish 2-3 times per week now.
Hugh Has Another Winner.......2005-07-12
In this well organized book, Hugh Carpenter has distilled the essence of cooking great fish. The recipes are simple and quick with lots of flavor and the photography makes these recipes a feast for your eyes. I especially enjoyed the Stir Fried Swordfish with Asian Spices. And when he says fast he means fast. Cooking the swordfish for about a minute is all it takes. Have everything else ready on the hot plates.
