Book Description

Teresa Porzecanski brings a fresh new voice to the Jewish Latin America series. She writes from Uruguay about the multicultural experience of Jewish immigrants in Montevideo. Her exotic characters from Europe, Africa, and the New World bring together and struggle with the mixture of Sephardic, Ashkenazic, and Latin American cultures. Porzecanski is herself the daughter of immigrants who came to Montevideo in 1926 from the Baltics and Syria. Sun Inventions, her first novel, published in 1982, is a semiautobiographical story of an immigrant family from the multifaceted perspective of a woman who is an academic, a mother, a writer searching for meaning in the universe. Perfumes of Carthage (1994) tells the stories of Lunita Mualdeb and her Sephardic family and Angela Tejera [Weaver], whose name was given to her African grandfather by a Brazilian slave owner.

Writing from Uruguay about the multicultural experience of Jewish immigrants in Montevideo, Porzecanski's exotic characters from Europe, Africa, and the New World bring together and struggle with the mixture of Sephardic, Ashkenazic, and Latin American cultures.

5 out of 5 stars "Perfumes" whose aroma will linger.......2001-06-17

"Sun Inventions / Perfumes of Carthage" brings together two novellas by Teresa Porzecanski, a talented Jewish writer from Uruguay. "Sun" has been translated into English by Johnny Payne, and "Perfumes" has been translated by Phyllis Silverstein. Ilan Stavans provides the introduction to this two-in-one volume.

"Sun Inventions" is the story of a female academic and her family situation. The stronger (and longer) of the two novellas is "Perfumes." This is an engrossing multigenerational saga about a Jewish family that emigrates from the Syrian city of Aleppo to Uruguay. The family story takes place against the backdrop of a Uruguayan revolutionary movement of the 1930s. With its colorful, conflicted characters and problematic relationships, "Perfumes" has a Faulkneresque flavor.

The title of "Perfumes" refers to the perfume shop run by one of the novella's principal characters. In this novella Porzecanski explores such issues as racial conflict, propaganda, oral tradition, Jewish ethics, and the power of sensory cues to trigger memories and visions. "Perfumes" is a fascinating and rewarding text that effectively blends tragic and comic elements. If you are interested in Jewish studies, Latin American literature, or contemporary fiction, check out this volume.

Book Description

The spotlight is squarely focused on Beast Boy in two complete sagas. First, in the days before the current incarnation of the Teen Titans, Beast Boy tries to reignite his stalled acting career only to find himself implicated in a murder. Then, Beast Boy is seemingly cured of his animal shape-changing powers only to see the children of San Francisco suddenly run riot, assuming green animal shapes with no experience and lots of panic. Introduction by Geoff Johns.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Nothing special.......2006-01-16

The third TPB of Geoff Johns' re-invention of the Teen Titans focuses on longtime Titan Garfield "Beast Boy" Logan. This TPB collects both the Beast Boy mini-series from 1999 as well as the Titans story; both of which are fine in their own right, but there's really nothing special here. Johns is a gifted writer (don't let Infinite Crisis fool you) but his knack for team superhero storytelling is replaced here for the conventional stuff that you'd expect from someone else. The art is solid enough, but as a whole Beast Boys and Girls feels completely unnecessary for the most part. All in all, this is worth checking out for Teen Titans fans who enjoyed the first two volumes, but there isn't much here to hold your interest.

5 out of 5 stars insight to the background.......2006-01-02

This TPB gives great insight into the character and orgins of Beast Boy of the Teen Titans. It helps explain what drives him to be the way he is. In the second part of the book, events show exactly what Garfield thinks of life. And it finally shows what a true rock that Beast Boy plays in the Team.

3 out of 5 stars Weakest Of The Three Titans TPBs.......2005-07-17

Beast Boys and Girls compiles two stories about Gar Logan, the Titan's Beast Boy.

The first story, a Beast Boy miniseries from 1999, gives us insight into Gar's character and his motivation. It's a great story with some very lovely artwork and it rarely hits higher than a four on the comics-cliche-o-meter. The script is only awkward when it tries too hard to hit a dramatic or comedic moment, but this does not happen often and, overall, the drama and comedy don't suffer.

The second story is the actual Teen Titans story. It gives us spot-on Gar Logan characterization that is, sadly, often presented in trite comic-book-character-expository-dialogue. The characterization of the rest of the Titans is usually right, despite their smaller roles. The exception here is Bart Allen (aka Kid Flash), whose maturity level seems to change based solely on whether he's needed for a comedic, dramatic, or expository moment. Similarly, the Teen Titans all appear as though they have the mysterious power to change their own ages at will, often choosing to look younger than they actually are. The action here is so-so, with nothing particularly thrilling. It is usually not even threatening enough to require the involvement of all the present Titans. Still, Gar get what he's been wanting all along, a chance in the spotlight (even if it is to fight a cliched, d-list villain).

5 out of 5 stars Beast Boy Kicks Butt!.......2005-06-25

If you're a fan of Garfield Logan (aka, Beast Boy), from either the Teen Titans comic book or even the animated series, then this collection is definetely for you. Not only do we get a lot of character moments and background, but we also get to see Garfield do some long overdue butt kicking, as he tries to prove to everyone that he's no longer just a kid with super powers but a superhero in his own right.

There are two stories in this collection, both of which were written (at least in part) by Geoff Johns, the current head writer for Teen Titans. The first is the 1999 "Beast Boy" mini-series, which has BB on his own for the first time ever and trying to make it in L.A. Personally, I think this is the better of the two stories; it's filled with lots of humor and drama, as Logan finds himself accused of murder and tries to find the real killer. Most especially, it shows that Garfield has now really grown up, and is well on his way to coming into his own.

The second story, "Beast Boys and Girls", jumps ahead in BB's continuity to the current Teen Titans series, with Garfield still older and now back with the Titans. In this story, Garfield loses his powers but must deal with a new villain known as The Zookeeper - a villain who has a connection with Garfield's parents. A little bit more action oriented than the first, but still a pretty good tale - and one that finally gives BB someone who may end up being a very real arch nemesis for him. My one complaint about this story is that, for some reason, the artist kept making him look a lot younger than he should be - Garfield Logan is, by this time, supposed to be about 19-20, yet he frequently comes off as looking younger than he was in the mini-series above. Grumble.

Anyway, complaint aside, if you are a Teen Titans fan of any stripe, and especially if you like the Titan's green shapechanger, then this is the collection for you.

And open note to Geoff Johns: Please bring back Matt Logan!!

4 out of 5 stars Curious About This One.......2007-08-28

I read it and I really enjoyed it. I thought it was a refreshing read. The author started the book off in a way I expected him to. Then he took it in another direction, to keep control of the grandness of the invasion, and I thought that direction was very clever, indeed.

3 out of 5 stars If you like comic book blood & gore then this is for you........2006-10-31

This novel starts out resonably straight forward when a group of people are trapped in an old mansion during an all out attack by Martians. At first it seems like everything favours the survival of these people despite the superior Martian technology and then the deaths start...

This novel is easy to read - in fact it based on a comic book style ensures that somewhat. It starts out easy but by the end of the book its a bloodbath. If you don't like seeing characters you like killed off at random then avoid this book, but if blood and gore and stomping on Martians is your thing then you may enjoy it.

Having just finished HG Wells' War of the Worlds, I thought it would be appropriate to check out the other side of the coin by going from serious Martian invasion to pure Martian pulp. You cannot get pulpier than Mars Attacks. It's totally disposable, just like all good pulp.

Written by Nathan Archer (who has cranked out a few Predator books in the past) the story follows a group of tourists, led by a biker, who have sought shelter in an old mansion built by an eccentric industrial tycoon. With loads of secret passages and rooms they think they are safe from the Martian invasion until giant, Martian-created insects turn up.

Unable to control the insects, the Martians seek refuge inside the mansion too. But they are kind of wimpy and have not got a clue what the mansion is supposed to be. The story jumps back and forth between the humans and the Martians (who, strangely, seem to have Arabic names) and their various misadventures of blasting each other to pieces. Nothing life-changing but fun if you're up for it.

I might check out the follow-up some time, but I'm not going to go out of my way. But if you are a Mars Attacks fan (not including the awful Tim Burton movie) then go for it.

Bud and his buddies are out riding their motorcycles when their afternoon joyride is canceled by an alien invasion. It seems that the probes we have sent to Mars have irked its inhabitants and they decide to attack first, blasting into oblivion every Earthling they happen upon. Bud and two surviving companions narrowly escape a gruesome death, running into the surrounding woods. While the Martians pelt that area with some kind of bioweapons, Bud lead his companions through the woods towards the only nearby shelter, the famous Gelman Mansion. A rich man's folly, the mansion is an intricate maze of rooms and passageways turned museum (a sort of ficitionalized version of San Jose's famous Winchester Mystery House) where, in a contrived coincedence, Bud used to work as a tour guide. Once at the mansion Bud and his companions discover another group of survivors. The Martians in the ship that attacked Bud discover the mansion and send out a small unit to investigate. Who will survive and what will be left of them?

Martian Deathtrap as all the depth one would expect from a book based on a series of trading cards. In other words, not much. None of the characters really acts or behaves in a realistic manner and, to be honest, almost all of them are in the story simply to die gruesomely at the hands of the Martian invaders or the insects made giant and deadly by the aliens' bio-weapondry. The Martians are also comically unaware of Earth customs, so some humor can be found in their lack of understanding the strange environment. Overflowing with gore and sprinkled with comedy, the book is passable entertainment. But readers wanting more emotional depth in their alien invaders yarns had better look elsewhere.

Great book for someone who just became a vegetarian. The recipes, you may trust, they do not need any improvment. So far, all I cooked is tasty, not too complicated, colourful and full of nutrients. The variety of tastes from soft and pleasant to a touch of spice are very satisfying.
I use this book often and, I find it to be a nice gift for a vegetarian friend.

                      5 out of 5 stars Great Cookbook!!.......2006-09-28

I am not sure why other reviewers had problems with this book--I found it very easy and clear to use. The instructions are simple and easy to follow. The food looks like the pictures--if you want to present it with the garnishes etc.. I would recommend this book to anybody who wants to eat a healthier and more flavorful diet!!

I 100% agree with the last reviewer. I really REALLY wanted to like this book and to use it everyday. I have had nothing but problems trying to cook with this book. The steps are incredibly vauge, the amount for any particular ingrediant is out of proportion. I'm writing this review after attempting the banana-nut tart on pg 108. First of all, the amount of left-over mix for the crust is unbelievable - I could have cut the amount of ingrediants in half. There is no binder, so the whole thing fell apart. And the filling is just the same! I am a very experienced baker and cook, and I am so frustrated that this isn't working out! The pictures are gorgeous, and the information on diet is very helpful, but overall it is not worth your money. Sorry!

2 out of 5 stars great pictures! bad recipes :(.......2003-11-10

i really wanted to love this book. the pictures of the dishes throughout the book are amazing. this book does have some great info on yogic diet and fasting, but as i made a number of the dishes in this book i wondered if they really tested them out. the directions sometimes seem to leave out steps and/or ingredients, which makes it hard to follow. maybe i've just been unlucky with the recipes i've chosen over the last 6 months, but the what i've made from this book has not turned out (and i'm not a novice cook). it really is too bad that the recipes don't live up to the picture that go along with them.

5 out of 5 stars Simple and delicious recipes.......1999-09-23

I've been using this book for about 6 months. The simple, easy to follow recipes are all delicious, making use of the flavours of fresh ingredients in a subtle but very tantilising way. There is also a great variety of recipes; you would eat very well using only these. The colour photos are also mouth-watering, I just wish there were more of them.

This is by far my favorite vegetarian cookbook. I've owned the book for almost 6 years now and given it as a gift to friends atleast 3 times :) Nothing at all needs to be done to these scrumptous recipes to "doctor" them up. My wife and I are vegetarians, but really require a lot of flavor in our dishes, and in our experience many recipes in the vegetarian cookbooks lack the flavor...we are often times needing to add a little of our own spices or salt to make them taste they way we would like them. These recipes are good as they are and oh so tasty!!!! My favorite recipe is the Indian Garbanzo Bean Curry (it's not the actual name given the recipe in the book) but it is oh so good. I have made it atleast a dozen times and have never had left overs. My favorite story is, I once made this recipe for a friend in order to deliver some as a gift, and by accident got my gift sack containing my tupperware of curry mixed up with an East Indian family's Indian dish that they were bringing for their Indian friend :) To make a long story short, their friend got my dish by mistake...or... divine providence, and loved every spoonful and thought it had been cooked by an Indian, which I am not. Two THUMBS UP!!! It's really a nice collection of Recipes.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book and buy!.......2007-01-25

I was excited to happen across this book and was hoping the recipes would offer simplicity and they do. Not only that, but most every ingredient can be found in your local grocery mart. No need to shop exclusively at organic / natural food stores for many of the ingredients contained within. The recipes are simple and short.

I spent a few days at The Expanding Light a number of years ago and recall my hesitancy over the menu. Not being a vegetarian at that time and not totally understanding what I was going to be eating left me a little wary. I have to say that I walked away from the retreat with a new found love.

If you're looking for good, wholesome and simple, this book is one of the best. Furthermore, if you're a new vegetarian, making this book part of your kitchen will get you off to an excellent start.

5 out of 5 stars This book deserves a grand applause.......2001-05-25

This book by Blanche McCord has the most fantastic, easy to follow recipes. Everyone absolutely loves the food I make when I cook from this cook book. Example: While camping last weekend one of our friends sampled a little of the red pesto pasta salad. The next day before we left he asked if I had any left. I said yes, that he should help himself to it. Later when I returned to our RV I spotted the empty container that had held the salad. He couldn't help himself. He finished it. Aside from the food being out of this world, you get insight as to why the food that comes out of Ananda is so outstanding.

5 out of 5 stars THE BEST VEGGIE COOKBOOK AROUND.......2000-07-01

I recently stayed at the Expanding Light Yoga Retreat and was awe-struck at the wonderful, flavorful foods created by Blanche. Eating was truly a spiritual experience that left everyone with satisfied bellies, calm minds, and smiling faces. As a vegetarian who loves to cook, there was no question that I would leave this place without this book. I have been nothing but delighted to read and create beautiful meals that are easy to make, maximizing the yield of flavors from just a few ingredients which I almost always have in my kitchen already, and well explained. The interview with the author at the beginning of the book, having spent time with her at the retreat, truly exemplifies the spirit in which she approaches her meal-planning and cooking-creating healthy food with a loving heart warms the spirits of all who share in eating it. The meal plan suggestions are truly thoughtful and outlined according to the season of the year. I cannot say enough good things about this book, and I have given it as a gift to a vegan already (almost all the recipes are vegan!). I highly recommend it to anyone.

We've been vegetarians for many years and have all the popular vegetarian cookbooks--but this is something different. The recipes are healthy and yet very tasty. I would say these recipes satisfy. I especially liked the menu ideas in the back of the book, which offer very creative and thoughtful combinations. It's also very interesting to learn how this yoga retreat makes their food "better"--I found the tips very helpful and inspiring.
