5 out of 5 stars An Extremely Well-Written Mystery.......1999-07-02

The first thing I look for in a mystery is a well-crafted character; I find this in the works of the greats: Raymond Chandler, James Lee Burke and Walter Mosley. The second is a believable and absorbing atmosphere; again, one finds these in abundance in the works of these writers.

Karen Rose Cercone is now another author I can add to the list. "Steel Ashes" is a wonderful book, and its sequel is even better. As a professional social worker who works with the poor, it is very gratifying for me to see a heroine who is also a social worker (something she denies in the book's sequel, but is nonetheless) at the very dawn of the social work profession. In the character of Helen Sorby, Cercone has crafted a heroine who is admirable and very real; not a few readers will, I suspect, fall head over heals for her.

The book's context illustrates the injustices of industrialism at the beginning of the twentieth century, reminding us that economic change (with which we are always contending) always brings with it human suffering. By placing the action in a time when few people believed that such suffering should be alleviated by the government (much like our own time), Cercone is able demonstrate the misery that occurs when such inaction is tolerated. These are the kind of injustices that brave reformers like Helen will not tolerate.

Helen's idealism is tempered by the worldly-wise Milo, a policeman who has had to conceal his Armenian heritage in order to become a cop. Milo is, like Helen, a victim of the prejudice of society; but like her, he refuses to be content with whining about it as an excuse for inaction. Even so, the differing responses of the two protagonists -- and their irresistable attraction to each other -- are what give the series its dramatic tension. The fact that then, as now, the book highlights very real and very current social problems is what makes it, like the work of Burke and Mosley and Chandler, more than just another mystery.

5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended.......1999-05-13

A delightful first mystery by Cercone on the Steel City and some of its less than wealthy residents at the turn of the century. The mystery was suspenseful but more to my liking, the sparks really flew between Helen Sorby and Milo the police officer. Definitely awaiting the sequel.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic.......1998-08-27

This was a fantastic book. It was different and fascinating because of the year it took place and what you learned about early Pittsburgh. It was great because of the wonderful characters, and it was fantastic because it was a mystery that kept you guessing until the very end. I would highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Sharp new mystery in a realistic historic setting.......1998-01-14

As a Pittsburgher, I really appreciated the accuracy and love of the city portrayed throughout the book. Cercone really captures the spirit of the immigrant populations, as well as the day-by-day details of Pittsburgh's industrial past. Delightful characters and a clever mystery just make the read more pleasant. A must-have for historical mystery fans AND for Steel City dwellers who love this place and its past.

5 out of 5 stars Interesting, engrossing and well done........1997-10-24

I read this book more than once and continually look for a sequel. The characters are likeable, the dialogue is smart and funny, and a potential romance is suggested between two of the main characters. Violence is minimal but suspense lurks around every corner, steadily builds throughout the story, and drops you into the ending where you are unable to put the book down until you know for sure how everything and everyone turns out. Highly recommended.

    Book Description

This study covers the latent demand outlook for stamped and pressed galvanized steel pails, ash cans, garbage cans, and tubs excluding shipping containers across the regions of Greater China, including provinces, autonomous regions (Guangxi, Nei Mongol, Ningxia, Xinjiang, Xizang - Tibet), municipalities (Beijing, Chongqing, Shanghai, and Tianjin), special administrative regions (Hong Kong and Macau), and Taiwan (all hereafter referred to as “regions”). Latent demand (in millions of U.S. dollars), or potential industry earnings (P.I.E.) estimates are given across some 1,100 cities in Greater China. For each major city in question, the percent share the city is of the region and of Greater China is reported. Each major city is defined as an area of “economic population”, as opposed to the demographic population within a legal geographic boundary. For many cities, the economic population is much larger that the population within the city limits; this is especially true for the cities of the Western regions. For the coastal regions, cities which are close to other major cities or which represent, by themselves, a high percent of the regional population, actual city-level population is closer to the economic population (e.g. in Beijing). Based on this “economic” definition of population, comparative benchmarks allow the reader to quickly gauge a city’s marketing and distribution value vis-à-vis others. This exercise is quite useful for persons setting up distribution centers or sales force strategies. Using econometric models which project fundamental economic dynamics within each region and city of influence, latent demand estimates are created for stamped and pressed galvanized steel pails, ash cans, garbage cans, and tubs excluding shipping containers. This report does not discuss the specific players in the market serving the latent demand, nor specific details at the product level. The study also does not consider short-term cyclicalities that might affect realized sales. The study, therefore, is strategic in nature, taking an aggregate and long-run view, irrespective of the players or products involved.

WHAT IS LATENT DEMAND AND THE P.I.E.?

The concept of latent demand is rather subtle. The term latent typically refers to something that is dormant, not observable, or not yet realized. Demand is the notion of an economic quantity that a target population or market requires under different assumptions of price, quality, and distribution, among other factors. Latent demand, therefore, is commonly defined by economists as the industry earnings of a market when that market becomes accessible and attractive to serve by competing firms. It is a measure, therefore, of potential industry earnings (P.I.E.) or total revenues (not profit) if a market is served in an efficient manner. It is typically expressed as the total revenues potentially extracted by firms. The “market” is defined at a given level in the value chain. There can be latent demand at the retail level, at the wholesale level, the manufacturing level, and the raw materials level (the P.I.E. of higher levels of the value chain being always smaller than the P.I.E. of levels at lower levels of the same value chain, assuming all levels maintain minimum profitability).

The latent demand for stamped and pressed galvanized steel pails, ash cans, garbage cans, and tubs excluding shipping containers is not actual or historic sales. Nor is latent demand future sales. In fact, latent demand can be lower either lower or higher than actual sales if a market is inefficient (i.e., not representative of relatively competitive levels). Inefficiencies arise from a number of factors, including the lack of international openness, cultural barriers to consumption, regulations, and cartel-like behavior on the part of firms. In general, however, latent demand is typically larger than actual sales in a country market.

For reasons discussed later, this report does not consider the notion of “unit quantities”, only total latent revenues (i.e., a calculation of price times quantity is neve

And Kilooloogung, who is pleased that men should pray, stretches himself up all grey and lean, with his arms above his head, and sendeth his servant the smoke to seek Pegana, that the gods of Pegana may know that the people pray.

5 out of 5 stars New Gods, Same Old Flavor.......2007-02-21

Herein the reader is introduced to MANA-YOOD-SUSHAI, who created all the lesser gods to play amongst the worlds. There is Kib, creator of all life, and Mung, who takes it away with but a signing of his hands. Meet Sish, the lord and master of Time, and Skarl the Drummer, whose beating can be heard throughout the heavens. Slid is also here, who frolics within the currents of countless rivers and rides the foam atop the waves of all the seas. There are also stories of the lesser home gods to be found, as well as the priests and prophets of Pegana.

Naturally, this isn't a book that presents a story with a beginning, middle, or end. It is really just snippets of history and gods of the land. You can't really read it one chapter at a time, it has to be read all the way through for the reader to get a complete sense of its grandeur. It stretches from the very beginning of time to its end and then back again. After you're done, you don't remember much of the details of the individual stories, but the sense of wonder remains.

This is the first installment of a five book cycle (followed by Time and the Gods, The Sword of Welleran, A Dreamer's Tale, and The Book of Wonder) concerning the fictional world of Pegana. Even though these stories were written nearly a century ago, they have had a great influence upon such well known writers as H.P. Lovecraft, J.R.R. Tolkien, and Neil Gaiman, as well as countless others. Dunsany's tales also rank up there with William Morris' and George MacDonald's for creating one of the first self-contained fantasy worlds and an accompanying imaginary mythology. (Although I've always hated the term "imaginary mythology." Aren't all mythologies imaginary to one degree or another? - not that that detracts from their power or legitimacy.)

Wildside Press has done a great service by reprinting most of the books in this series. I do wish, however, that a collected edition would be made available complete with annotations. (Not even Chaosium's "The Complete Pegana" reprints all the stories involved in the cycle.) As it stands now, readers will have to make do with these incredibly short individual volumes. This book, for instance, has 32 chapters, but is only 106 pages long. And that is using very large type and with a few pictures thrown in!

Nevertheless, it has often been said that some of the best things in life come in small packages. In this case, it is most definitely true.

5 out of 5 stars Word magic .......2005-02-22

Pegana's interlinked stories are perhaps the most underrated work of fantasy of all time. The poetic beauty and philosophical depth of Dunsany's stories are unmatched by any other writer and his skill with the english language borders on the scary.
This slim volume, as well as subsequent collections such as The Time and the Gods and Sword of Welleran, has more beauty, poetry and sense of wonder than the vast majority of "big fat" fantasy novels written nowadays.Don't missed it.

4 out of 5 stars Thank the "Gods".......2004-05-05

"In the mists before the Beginning, Fate and Chance cast lots to decide whose the Game should be." With that enticing opener, Lord Dunsany kicked off "The Gods of Pegana," an intriguing collection of heroes-and-gods tales that the Irish nobleman created.

It starts off by describing the creator of the gods, MANA-YOOD-SUSHAI (always in capitals), and how the gods created the worlds "to amuse Ourselves." And then Dunsany describes the lord of death Mung and his encounters with a poor man, the "chaunt of the priests," the God of Mirth, the rebellion of the Home Gods, prophets and cities and temples and finally the end of Pegana ("For at the last shall the thunder, fleeing to escape from the doom of the gods, roar horribly among the Worlds").

When it comes to fantasy, nobody has equalled the "fictional Bible" of J.R.R. Tolkien, the Silmarillion. But "The Gods of Pegana" (first published in 1905) got to that turf first, with the littler gods under an overseeing deity (MANA-YOOD-SUSHAI -- isn't that a great name?) who made all of them, the lush language and complex histories. It's not hard to see why Tolkien was a fan of Dunsany's.

Dunsany seems to have been having a good time creating his own myths and legends. But even so, there's a feeling of melancholy to "The Gods of Pegana," and the sense that even at the beginning of the world, things are headed straight for the apocalyptic end. There's little of Dunsany's humor and irony in these stories, though his semi-mythic, descriptive language is very much present ("... then shine the blue eyes of the gods like sunlight on the sea, where each god sits upon his mountain.")

Before the Silmarillion, there was "The Gods of Pegana." This enticing early fantasy is a wonderful example of the invented myth, and a good read for fans of the classic fantasies.

                            Book Description

The Gods of Pegana, by Lord Dunsany, is an imaginative book of fantasy and one of the most important collections compiled of short stories from the early part of the 20th century. Dunsany, as the second writer to fully exploit the fantasy and adventure of imaginary lands, which include gods, witches, magic and spirits, The God of Pegana is both an important science fiction work which is both for it's ability to be an excellent collection children's fairy tales as well as sophistcated enough to work well at an adult level.

The author of the ground-breaking science-fiction novels Neuromancer and Virtual Light returns with a fast-paced, high-density, cyber-punk thriller. As prophetic as it is exciting, Idoru takes us to 21st century Tokyo where both the promises of technology and the disasters of cyber-industrialism stand in stark contrast, where the haves and the have-nots find themselves walled apart, and where information and fame are the most valuable and dangerous currencies.

When Rez, the lead singer for the rock band Lo/Rez is rumored to be engaged to an "idoru" or "idol singer"--an artificial celebrity creation of information software agents--14-year-old Chia Pet McKenzie is sent by the band's fan club to Tokyo to uncover the facts. At the same time, Colin Laney, a data specialist for Slitscan television, uncovers and publicizes a network scandal. He flees to Tokyo to escape the network's wrath. As Chia struggles to find the truth, Colin struggles to preserve it, in a futuristic society so media-saturated that only computers hold the hope for imagination, hope and spirituality.

4 out of 5 stars Virtual is Almost Real.......2007-09-12

Gibson's novel about a singer who decides to marry a computer-generated pop culture idol is a rather lightly-plotted science fiction tale with touches of sly humor. Chia Pet, one of the singer's young female fans, goes to Japan to see if the matrimonial rumors are true. His security chief hires a data investigator to find out who put the bizarre idea into the singer's head. Mixing virtual worlds ala Second Life, bizarre avatars, smuggling, and just a touch of nano technology, Gibson has turned out an amusing mix that fans of writers like Harry Harrison will love.

4 out of 5 stars Good, not great, scifi .......2007-05-07

Gibson has a real talent for writing but this really paled in comparison to Neuromancer, the book that invented the word cyberspace. Nevertheless, a good quick read by a true talent in the genre - the tastes of nanotech and the world geopolitics are clever and, if not novel, at least believable.

                                      4 out of 5 stars Converging details.......2007-01-05

Idoru follows the stories of 14 year old Chia, who has been sent to Japan by her chapter of the Lo Rez fan club to investigate a marriage rumor, and of Laney, whose ADD allows him to focus focus and spot patterns that show more probable outcomes and who has been hired to focus focus on the marriage rumor. Their stories converge around the rumor that rock star Rez plans to marry Rei Toei, an idoru or machine generated character.

Chia quickly becomes mixed up in some type of smuggling operation when she carries a bag through customs for someone. She tries hard to find out as little as possible what is being smuggled. As she tries to find out whatever she can about Rez's intention to marry, she realizes that someone is looking for her and is soon much more interested in safely evading the smugglers.

Laney's story contains many flashbacks that show his motivations. Because he can spot patterns in reams of data about a person, he once realized that someone he was analyzing as part of his job was going to commit suicide. His attempts to get into a cleaner type of analysis motivate most of his actions.

A big positive was the way the stories came together. Although Rei Toei is only background most of the time, she appears and when she does she seems to have been doing more along the way. Little details fall into place, maybe something like details falling together for one of Laney's "nodal points." It is also nice that most of the characters are fleshed out.

A negative was that this book dragged and only got going for me near the end. I'm not such a fan of Gibson's writing style, so if you like his style, then this may not be a problem for you.

3 out of 5 stars Great writer, but..........2006-04-19

This book confirms my opinion of Gibson as a great writer but a mediocre novelist. He writes some of the pithiest, most thought-provoking prose you could ever read, but he just doesn't have enough substance to match the style.
What actually happens in this book? Not much. One young character, a fan of a middle-aged rock star, travels to Japan to find out if it is true that her hero wants to marry a piece of software. Another character, with an unusual but inexplicable talent for making connnections from boring data, gets a job trying to find out why the rock star wants to marry the software. Meanwhile, the Russian mafia are trying to retrieve a piece of hardware lost in a bungled smuggling operation.
Along the way, as one would expect from Gibson, there are some interesting but not-always-comprehensible cybernetic developments.
The whole thing, in my opinion, is far too long. The job interview takes up five (admittedly short) chapters. There are big chunks of basically irrelevant detail. It would be quite easy to produce a condensed version of this book one third the length of the original without sacrificing anything really significant.
The climax, when it comes, is fairly unoriginal. The "revelations" are not terribly interesting. And I finished the book wondering what was the point of it all.

This is a NAVAL POSTGRADUATE SCHOOL MONTEREY CA report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A370793. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: A new virtual thermal image-processing model that has been developed at the Naval Postgraduate School is introduced in this thesis. This visualization program is based on an earlier work, the Visibility MRTD model, which is focused on predicting the minimum resolvable temperature difference (MRTD). The MRTD is a standard performance measure for forward-looking infrared (FLIR) imaging systems. It takes into account thermal imaging system modeling concerns, such as modulation transfer functions (MTFs), sampling, aliasing and noise, and provides virtual visual images that are associated with the thermal imaging system being modeled. This capability of the model allows the user to virtually evaluate the effects of component variation, noise, sampling and aliasing on the final four-bar image. The analysis demonstrated that aliasing effects in thermal images of four-bar patterns cannot, in general, be adequately modeled as noise. For example, the simulation experiments showed that under the right conditions aliasing can create a noticeable contrast enhancement in the output images.

                                                    Book Description

Society tells them to sell their souls. Instead they start a revolution.

The year is 2054 and in Screen City independence is illegal. The entertainment world - film, music, books, art - is controlled by Contracts; actors and musicians owned by the Studios. Virtual Reality offers only brief escape... and a place to plot change.

Corlay Llewellyn is a genetically engineered hermaphrodite - an outcast and NetSurfer in love with a Star. Michelle David is an actress owned by the Studio. JayJay and the Bandshees are a rock 'n' roll band on the verge of making it big, and Phoenix Whitson is a political activist running for his life.

In a world of rock 'n' roll and virtual reality, these four must come together to force a change. Welcome to the future.

2 out of 5 stars Way Better Out There.......2007-08-09

I'll admit that I only tried 3 recipes from the book - the chocolate chip cookies, pound cake and basic brownies. They were all pretty bad; I was surprised because the cover said that the author baked for a restaurant. Try baked goods (and other recipes) from Chef Brian McCarthy's Vegan Family Cookbook, Vegan Planet, or Isa Chandra Moskowitz's books.

                                                      2 out of 5 stars Somewhat disappointing.......2007-04-28

I wish this book had worked out, but like some of the other reviewers, I just couldn't get the recipies to turn out right. Made a few of them, but they just didn't taste the way I thought they should - undercooked even after baking for much longer than the recipe directed, too heavy, too reliant on maple syrup, too much customization and experimentation required to make them work out right (or at all).

It's too bad, because all the recipes look like they should be delicious...

I really, really wanted this to be a good cookbook, but I gave the book away because I knew I just wouldn't use it after my failed attempts at some of the recipies.

An excellent book with lots of yummy recipes in that even friends and family that are not vegan absolutely love !!

                                                      1 out of 5 stars Yuck!.......2007-03-19

I've tried a handful of recipes from this book; all were gross. I am unwilling to waste time and ingredients trying any more. I have had much better success with vegan desserts from Peter Berley, Myra Kornfeld, and Isa Chandra Moskowitz. I cannot recommend this book. In fact, I recycled the book because I thought it unkind to pass it on to anyone else.

5 out of 5 stars Sticky Pecan Squares / Omni Pecan Pie Smackdown!.......2007-02-28

This book is great, especially if you have a lot of omnivore party functions to attend. Most of the recipes pass the scrupulous omnivore test for satisfying and tasty yet vegan desserts. The Sticky Pecan Squares, hands down, is my favorite dish to bring to holiday functions because its flavor mimics pecan pie so well that people will gobble them up and leave that poor pecan pie in the dust.
