Book Description
Here is a new combined edition of Lee Maracle's best-loved works of fiction. True to the principles of First Nations oratory, the novel (Sundogs) and short stories (Sojourner's Truth and Other Stories) in this volume are layered with unresolved human dilemmas. Maracle writes with love and humor, whether she's telling the tragic story of a boy's attempt to escape residential school or offering an intimate look at one family's struggle during the Mohawk Warrior Society's defiant stand at Oka. These are stories of the heart -- daring and imaginative, crossing cultures and generations -- by a vital and visionary writer.

Book Description
In the wilds of Michigan's Upper Peninsula, Robert Corvus Strang is crawling through the woods. A beautiful Costa Rican woman is dancing in a string bikini, and a dissipated writer is trying to stay on his feet....All three have retreated to this isolated land -- where Strang, builder of dams and bridges, preacher of gospels, lover of women, explorer of limits, launches into the story of his monumental life. In a novel that stretches from Michigan to Africa and the Amazon, Strang leads his listeners across rivers of time, through the nature of innocence, politics and desire, to a final and stunning defiance of life's frailty.
Customer Reviews:
Jim Harrison is a national treasure worth reading.......2002-04-01
This powerful novel by the author of LEGENDS OF THE FALL and Farmer concerns the life and loves of a foreman named Robert Corvus Strang. Strang worked on giant dam projects in the U.S., South America, and Africa, until he was crippled in a fall down a three-hundred-foot dam. Now as he tries to regain use of his legs, he has a chance to reassess his life, and a bored journalist who has heard of Strang's reputation in the field arrives to draw him out about his various incarnations. Strang recounts his life, including his childhood in the Midwest, his several marriages and children, dozens of lovers, and his work on projects around the world. Strang has the violently heightened sensibilities of a man who has gone to the limits and back, a man who is passionately and unequivocally committed to life. Harrison captures the foreman's tale with head-on frankness and clarity that needs no elaboration, no embellishment. This is a story as true and gripping as real life, and ultimately as victorious.
About the Author -- Jim Harrison has been awarded the National Endowment for the Arts (1968-69) and the Guggenheim Fellowship (1969-70). He is the author of WOLF: A FALSE MEMOIR, A GOOD DAY TO DIE, FARMER, LEGENDS OF THE FALL, WARLOCK, and SELECTED AND NEW POEMS. The author has lived in Michigan, Arizona, and Montana.

I am from Brasil and I live in da UP! I drank from the Tocantins and took many a swim in Superior. This book rocks my world!
The best there is! ...and if you read it and like it, you should try the short story "Brown Dog." ...or maybe it's "Browndog." Either way, it's from "The Woman Lit by Fireflies."
Jim Harrison rules!
This gal loved this "boy" book!.......2001-03-22
My hiking, camping, backpacking, Nature-loving, outdoorsman hubby bought this book for me - and I began it reluctantly. Boy, was this gal surprized and pleased. A beautifully written narrative with fascinating characters, settings, dialogue, and points of view. I loved it! And now plan on reading more of Harrison. SUNDOG would make a great film! And I would love to write the script.
An Unsophisticated Reader Sounds Off.......2000-03-03
When I read for pleasure, the most important thing to me is the quality of the fictional dream. If it pulls me in and captures my imagination, I'm happy and satisfied. I really don't pay much attention to whatever messages the author might be trying to send to the readers, or what deeper meanings might be concealed in the prose. I just want to be carried off in a fictional dream which provokes thought and perhaps changes my outlook, if only for a short time. SUNDOG is such a book. The fictional dream it creates is wonderful and seductive. I've reread this book time and again and it just keeps getting better and better. You should read it; I bet you'll like it, and enjoy it. Harrison's talent is really something rare and great, and this book is one of my all-time favorites.
One of the Best Books Written in the Last Quarter Century.......2000-01-14
In Corvus Strang, Harrison has created a character as significant in American Literature as any of those created by Melville, Twain, or Kerouac. This novel is truly a classic.

Worth the Read...for several reasons.......2006-07-11
I must disagree with "disappointed's" review. I have MS, the experiences in this book are accurate. While MSer's experience different symptoms and progession of the disease, much of what the author writes about is very real to the those who are dx's and learning to live with a chronic illness. I would encourage this as a book for those who HAVE MS and for those who want to understand MS. The 'drug' use is very real, Montel Williams who has MS is a very vocal advocate for the use of 'recreational drugs' for symptom relief, this is not for me, but the debate is very real. People with MS will get what they need out of the books, those looking for an understanding of the disease should read it with an open mind.(very much a problem with people who don't understand the disease). THE OTHER BENEFIT of the book is the characters struggle w/faith, this was a very unexpected addition to the meaning of the book, that I found personally rewarding. I gave the book a 4(not a five) because I felt she fell into a few "danielle steel" moments with her overly flowerly descriptions of the romance, I found myself thinking 'keep it real and raw' like the rest of the book, get away from the the wordy romance.(oh, by the way I have wonderful marriage too) I am not a STeel fan at all...HOWEVER, it is still very much worth the read.
insightful inspirational character study .......2006-02-25
Michael and Elizabeth Whittaker are a loving well-balanced couple fluid like Astaire and Rogers in all they do. However, without warning, Elizabeth begins to become uncoordinated. Concerned they have her checked out fearing a brain tumor. Though not that, both are stunned when Dr. Jones informs them she suffers from multiple sclerosis. Their harmonious world will never be the same.
Her family and friends react with horror only adding to Elizabeth's sudden feeling of isolation from the secure world she knew. Her mom is over the edge; her best friend has no idea how to act with her; and her loving spouse fears leaving her on her own. Needing understanding not trepidation, Elizbath joins the Northern Neck Neuromuscular Support Group, but some members turn to marijuana for healing and pain relief. Instead Elizabeth turns to Father Wells who advices her to seek the sun where sundogs provide halos of hope when things seem it's darkest.
This insightful inspirational character study will grip the audience from the moment that the heroine begins to comprehend that she has more than just an illness to battle; as caring relatives and buddies drive her up a wall. Elizabeth's search for solace goes through the five steps of grief as she struggles spiritually as much as emotionally especially as her body fails her. Though the realistic portrayal that makes this a strong novel at times slows down the pacing, Sharon Baldacci, an MS sufferer, provides a wonderful tale of a courageous woman.
Hope for the hurting.......2004-11-30
What a book to put in doctors' offices for those suffering with pain! No, it's not a 'feel good' book - but pain isn't 'feel good'. I have to admit that I know the author slightly, as we all live on the Northern Neck of Virginia where you can't 'not know someone'. But this woman is a true hero, and I'm sending a copy to my adult son who lives with pain. We are not talking about a 'good read' here, we are talking about a truly useful and inspiring book. Oh, and yes, my child gets relief from marijuana that he can't get from any other (government approved) drug.
A bit thick, but well-worth the time to read!.......2004-09-07
Elizabeth Whittaker has suddenly developed some mysterious symptoms that have her husband and doctors baffled. Afraid of a brain tumor, they run test after test, relieved to find out that a tumor isn't what is causing her problems. Something incurable is. Her husband, Michael is devastated to learn his wife has been diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis.
Beautiful, talented Elizabeth laughs the diagnosis off. She'll be fine. Okay, she has a few problems, but they'll go away. She doesn't seem to understand why everyone is so concerned. Her daughter has just left to attend college, now Elizabeth's life is ahead of her.
Once the truth sinks in, the shock is total and the fear overwhelming. Now, Elizabeth must travel down a road she would have never chosen to travel if given a choice. Facing tough physical, emotional and spiritual challenges, Elizabeth searches for relief by making some decisions-and the decision she makes threatens everything she holds dear.
A SUNDOG MOMENT is a beautiful first book written by a talented author. Elizabeth and Michael are a very realistic couple, in love with each other, even after years together. I was saddened by Elizabeth's diagnosis, and hoped the doctors would be wrong.
A SUNDOG MOMENT is a bit thick, but well-worth the time to read. The story is beautiful, told with humor mixed with the truth. Even when the night seems the darkest, God doesn't let you walk the path alone. I couldn't read this book in one sitting, I had to pick it up and read some, then put it down and think about what I read. This book is probably best read in small doses, so you can consider everything.

Good for people with MS or similar disease.......2004-08-26
I have RA and thought this book really hit home. I would highly recommend it for those suffering from any chronic pain disease.
The review written by "disappointed" person, is just another example of people who aren't suffereing with some dreaded disease..just don't get it!!!!

Product Description
A great astronomer explains the facts of the natural origins of flying saucers, from mirages and sundogs all the way back to Ezekiel's wheels in the Bible. Donald H. Menzel is Professor of Astrophysics and Associate Director for Solar Research in the Harvard College Observatory, Harvard University. In this book a top-flight scientist who has seen many a so-called flying saucer himself explodes every one of the current myths about their nature and origin. People who like to be scared or mystified may not want to agree with what Dr. Menzel has to say-- but everyone who wants to know the real answer will find it in these pages. And the Answer banishes forever the "little men," the foreign power's guided missiles, the space ships, and all the other highly colored scare stories. Anyone with a spark of intellectual curiosity will find that this book opens up a whole new aspect of the heavens-- and of man's unlimited capacity to misinterpret the real world.
Book Description
Many lights and other objects in the sky go unrecognised, or at least are little understood by those observing them. Such things range from the commonplace like rainbows and meteors, to the distinctly unusual like the green flash and ball lightning. And there is still a residuum of objects that remain unidentified by the watcher – classed generally as ‘UFOs’, a description which today has connotations of the mysterious, even of extraterrestrial visitors.
The first part of this book is an identification guide, very much like the "plant identifier" sections found in a good gardening or botany book. It allows quick (and structured) identification of known aerial phenomena, whether at night or during the day. The objects thus found are referenced to the second part of the book.
The second part gives a full description, physical explanation, and where relevant notes on observing and photographing the various phenomena. Some will need optical aids such as binoculars or telescopes, but the main thrust of the book is identification and explanation rather than imaging.
The final chapter approaches UFOs from a scientific standpoint, particularly the way in which human perception and often preconception affects the outcome. It does however finish with a short section on "extraterrestrial UFOs", emphasising the burden of proof aspect and touching on the scientific theories of life on other worlds and the improbability of visitors.

Good solid Felix & Gotrek, albeit a little slower than the previous books in the series.......2007-01-23
I've been reading the Felix and Gotrek series as I come across them, and not in any particular order, enjoying them as I get the chance. I actually came across them purely by chance and offhand, I think the Warhammer series by William King are a superb collection of game-based literature, bringing the game's atmosphere to life quite credibly.
The series is written in chronological order, following the adventures of Felix Jaeger and the Dwarven Slayer Gotrek Gurnisson, ostensibly told in a series of volumes by Felix Jaeger entitled "My Travels with Gotrek." It's definitely not a series for the faint at heart who dislike blood, gore and mindless violence. On the other hand, if you enjoy a well-written tale involving the afore-mentioned subjects, this series is for you.....
This particular book takes up where the last in the series, Beastslayer, leaves off, with Felix, Gotrek and Snorri Nosebiter (another Dwarven Slayer and compatriot of Gotrek's) in Praag where they have assisted in defeating a Chaos Army. I won't reveal the plot, such as it is, in any detail, but suffice it to say that as per the book's title, our adventurers trek south away from the Armies of Chaos in pursuit of a Vampire.
That said, as other reviewers have noted, this particular book has a bit less hack and slash gore and violence and a bit more in the way of scene setting, character development (for Felix Jaegar at least) and plot than others in the series. For readers that have enjoyed the previous books in the series and want action, action and more action, this may be somewhat of a disappointment. On the other hand, for those of us who like a little depth at times, this may come as a welcome interlude. Or maybe not. Anyhow, I enjoyed it. As with all the series, it's fast-paced, although the first half is a little slower than one has come to expect as it sets the scene for what's to come, the plot moves relatively quickly and settles down to the violence we've come to expect in the second half, there's some lovely little fights although perhaps not on the same epic scale as in other books in the series.
Slow going. Not enough Gotrek........2004-06-25
This is the 6th book in the Felix & Gotrek series and the 6th one that I've read, but unfortunately it is also the first one I am giving less than a perfect 5-star rating to.
Briefly put, the story this time out seems very drawn out and not that interesting. Unlike the previous books in the series which I could not keep myself from reading page after page, at some points in this book I found it an effort to keep going.
Over half the book seems devoted to an overly lengthy account of the pursuit of the villain. Also, I am not sure exactly what the problem is, but King does not seem that comfortable writing the character of the Vampire, and the genres of Horror and Fantasy do not achieve a very satisfying blend in this book. The overall result ends up coming off as rather bland.
Gotrek doesn't get much action in this one, and there seems to be too much weight given to introspection, as the narrative moves from one character's inner thoughts to the next to the next without sufficient events or action in between to add a bit of colour and interest.
As a huge fan myself, I can only recommend this one to the really die-hard fans of this series who just can't get enough of Gotrek & Felix.
Disappointing.......2002-12-24
I picked up this book expecting Gotrek and Felix to hack and slash their way to hordes and hordes of ghouls and the undead. But instead, I got a book that has its first half focusing on the aftermath of the siege of Praag and its title characters seeing miniscule amount of action. I have no expectations of philosphical quandaries or moral dilemmas for this series. I want action, action, action and action. Sadly, there are few and far between and Gotrek is given little chances to plow through hordes of enemies. Heck, he didn't even get to face mano-a-mano the title villain.
Wow.......2002-07-17
King does it again! I have throughly enjoyed every book in this series and was again throughly pleased. He provides all you need from the gore, to the mystery, to the darkness that is warhammer. I have been reading fantasy for twenty years and the warhammer series is some of the best i've come across. No romance, boring dialogue, or feelings here--just blood and guts action--the way it should be.
Not so good.......2002-03-14
King needs to slow down. This book is not nearly as good as the others in the series. Fans of the series should find it tolerable, but disapointing. I think King is cranking out too many books, and has definitely entered hack territory.

Two-part comic adapted from the movie.......2007-01-07
This comic is put together using stills from the movie and dialogue boxes. The movie came first and the comic here follows it almost exactly. It reads right to left and from what would be the back of the book, because that's the Japanese format. The plot follows Ray, a mechanically talented young English boy, whose inventor father disappeared while investigating break through steam technology. Ray soon receives a mysterious package from his missing father. Others are after the package, and Ray tries to follow his father's instructions and guard the package. Part 1 follows the plot from the beginning of the movie up to where Ray is contacted by his crazed grandfather with plans of sabotage - so about half-way through. Part 2 follows through the end of the movie.
I liked the movie, and although this isn't a bad comic, I recommend the movie first because it was pretty good, and it's the original real deal. The best use of this comic is perhaps if you want to look at art from the movie (it's sci-fi from Victorian England, so it's kind of an aesthetic mechanical look), or to see how the stills from the movie were editted into frames for the comic. It has a really nice print job and reads well.

Steambore.......2006-02-11
This novel adaptation of the animation from acclaimed director Katsuhiro Otomo falls flat on its face for the very reason that books tend not to have car chases. Because I have intentionally not yet seen the animation for purposes of grading the novel on its own merits, I cannot comment on the accuracy of its translation to print [or even its translation to English]--however, reading the book without being able to see the stunning visuals I can only imagine are in the animation has only served to put me straight to sleep, particularly with all the history and unnecessary flashback sequences instead of one chronological stream. This technique may work in a visual format, but in text form it is definitely lacking, like reading a novel about The Matrix instead of watching the movie... WHY? Action is, by its very nature, visual, and you are much better off simply watching the film or, at the very least, picking up the "graphic novel" version instead.

SAVING DINNER SAVED MY CHRISTMAS!!!.......2007-08-16
Excellent resource. I easily balanced work, little ones, a menu, and a budget with very little stress on my end. Excellent budgeting and planning ideas!!! LOVE IT!!!
Haul It Out Every Holiday.......2007-06-09
I especially like the timelines in this very helpful planning book for holiday meals. The author has a friendly, informal style of writing which I enjoy.
Dinner was saved!.......2007-01-11
With all of the stresses the holiday season brings, it was nice having some help with the dinners that require a higher level of planning. At first I thought this was silly; "Who needs help with this sort of thing... Everyone knows how to do a basic dinner..." Well the inner child inside of me said to get it and give it a try anyway, no matter how silly I thought it was (at the time). Why did I not get this helper before? Now I feel silly for thinking so stinky. This book put a smile on my face and brain as I know I have a helper for many years to come with several holiday and other celebration type of meals. My menus with the recipes I needed were suggested to me. A timeline was something I have always needed. I have these now too (thank you!!!!!!) My grocery list was all ready made. I could tell everyone what we were having as well as the nutritional values for anyone who asked. This feature was fantasic. It helped show some of my loved ones that I care for thier wellness. With the help from this book, it freed up some valuble time. It kept me from getting stressed out over this sort of thing. A matter of fact I survived this year without getting really stressed out to much. Thanks Leanne!!!! This year my family was nice to me and I was nice to them as well. How strange a book could change one's life so much. I am already planning for the next year for those special dates, because the stress level has dropped significantly.
Saving Holidays.......2007-01-10
This book is excellent for those of us who are trying to get through the holidays. Meals have always been a struggle for me during certain holidays, and this book has given me many ideas that are simple and planned out. All the menus and shopping lists are included - so all my work is next to nothing. The book offers a variety of recipes.
Beautiful Food For Celebrations!.......2006-10-07
I bought this book last year and used the Thanksgiving recipes. This was the first Thanksgiving I ever hosted at my house, and thanks to this book, it was a HUGE success. Not only does the book provide the grocery list and recipes, it also provides detailed discussions about various cooking techniques, organizational tips, and timelines to help you get your act together and keep it that way clear through until your event is over.
The turkey we made using Leanne's recipe and treatment recommendations was OUTSTANDING, the best turkey I ever ate much less cooked.
I highly recommend this book for domestically challenged OR beginner cooks/hostesses who wish to create beautiful celebrations with great food.
