Book Description

"Sappho's Leap delights."—USA Today

Sappho's Leap is a journey back 2,600 years to inhabit the mind of the greatest love poet the world has ever known. At the age of fourteen, Sappho is seduced by the beautiful poet Alcaeus, plots with him to overthrow the dictator of their island, and is caught and married off to a repellent older man in hopes that matrimony will keep her out of trouble. Instead, it starts her off on a series of amorous adventures with both men and women, taking her from Delphi to Egypt, and even to the Land of the Amazons and the shadowy realm of Hades.

Erica Jong—always our keenest-eyed chronicler of the wonders and vagaries of sex and love—has found the perfect subject for a witty and sensuous tale of a passionate woman ahead of her time. A generation of readers who have been moved to laughter and recognition by Jong's heroines will be enchanted anew by her re-creation of the immortal poet.

5 out of 5 stars Myths, legend, romance - all in this beautiful story.......2007-07-24

I was scrambling to learn more about Sappho after I read this book. Jong does a superb job with the twists and turns in the storyline, adding the brilliance of mythology. Sappho comes alive on each page.

5 out of 5 stars Sappho's Oddessey of religion and sexuality.......2006-06-22

This book reminded me of when I took a mythology clas back in high school. but in this book, all the gods and goddesses really came alive! Erica Jong's sense of religion is astoudning. I found myself wanting to worship Aphrodite! Also the sexuality in his book is sensual, dreamy and it removes all "sin" from bisexuality. I was not previously aware that Pagans were free to be bisexual. After reading Sappho's encounters with members of both sexes, I started to realize the bisexuality in myself, and can no longer deny it.
Read this book to have fun and open your mind!

4 out of 5 stars Very nice Historical Fiction.......2006-05-02

Saffo. As you have never seen her before. As a woman, a wise and a passionate soul. We have so little on Saffo that the Historical parts are more on the backbround of the historic age where she lived than on herself. A true history about her with the little things we have would not be possible. But the fiction is really very nice and this is one of my favourite books. I do reccomend this book to who likes this genre. Buy it.

3 out of 5 stars Not bad, but not wonderful.......2006-03-03

I enjoyed reading this book, but I've definitely read better ones. The books tells the story of Sappho, the Greek poet/songstress of Lesbos. Yep, the one that inspired the word 'lesbian.' It's a biography of her life, so this is historical fiction, and it's kind of like an epic poem turned into a novel. Sometimes it came off too...intellectual? and not enough heartfelt. Like, I'd begin feeling like I was reading nonfiction instead of fiction. Other than that, it's a simple story with love, adventure, and magic, and it kept me suitably entertained, but not enthralled by any means. Go read it if you like Greek history and myth, otherwise I wouldn't recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars The Tenth Muse.......2005-07-16

Many people have criticized this book of having too much sex. I have to disagree. The book deals with many subjects--love, friendship, motherhood, family...and yes, sex. Yet you have to understand this, since Sappho was a poet that dealt with, above all, erotic love. However, not all 291 pages of this novel concentrate on this subject. The reader will be transported to a whole different world, 2600 years ago, and travel to a place long ago forgotten. Along the way you will encounter people and creatures mentioned only in legends--amazons, minotaurs, sirens--and learn their way of living and the mythology associated with each. Erica Jong does a beautiful job of bringing Sappho to life, considering how little information remains of the woman Plato named "the tenth muse".

    Book Description

The Story of Weapon X. Before joining the X-Men, Wolverine was simply a directionless loner mutant named Logan. Weapon X isn't just another story about the Wolverine you know and love. It's the cruel story of Logan's transformation into Wolverine, as seen through the eyes of his tormentors. Spearheading the Weapon X program are Dr. Benjamin Cornelius and Carol Hines -- their goal is to create the ultimate weapon, an indestructible man -- and then enslave him. Their gift of invulnerability comes at a price to all those involved...especially their victim. Logan will lose his humanity, and many people will lose their lives. As Logan manages to free himself from his captors, a brutal wave of violence affects all those involved. From the bloody aftermath of Logan's transformation, all involved in the Weapon X program endure their own personal change...via guilt, ambition, and humanity. Can anyone survive the carnage of this bioengineering team's twisted dream? Chances are slim, as the lines between man, beast, and monster are blurred for all the players in this closed experiement. Best-selling author, Marc Cerasini has spent time on the New York Times and USA Today best-seller's lists. His writing spans from children's picture books and young adult novels to adult mystery and military nonfiction. Along the way, he's managed to ghostwrite for Tom Clancy.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Probably the best X-Men novelization out there..........2006-05-23

Wolverine: Weapon X by Marc Cerasini is a delicious read, whether or not you've read the seminal Barry Windsor-Smith version (if you haven't and you're a Wolverine fan, shame on you, it's ISBN # 0785100334. Treat yourself, you'll be glad you did). If you haven't read the Weapon X graphic novel, then this is a rare opportunity for you, a chance to see how Logan was forced to have his Adamantium skeleton. If you have read the BWS version, then prepare to be delighted by tons of new detail.

Without giving away much of the plot, the story begins with Logan between government spy jobs, down on his luck, and hiding out. But what little luck he does have evaporates when he is captured by a secret Canadian organization. Soon he's undergoing hellish surgery and experiments, designed to completely change who he is inside and out.

The writing is very well executed, the plot fast, and the imagery intriguing. There is a sub story about Logan back from his spy days that is completely unique to this novel, so even if you think you know all there is to know about everyone's favorite Canadian mutant, check this one out anyway. It's got enough new things to keep regular X-Men readers happy, and is well told enough that a newcomer to X-Men and Wolverine would not be lost.

Not recommended for children as there is reference to sexual abuse and torture. But recommended to everyone else as a fine addition to your library.

5 out of 5 stars The price of freedom...........2005-05-23

The origin of Wolverine, more specifically, how he got the metal skeleton, is the starting point for this intense techno-thriller with a twist. Here, the weapon IS the man.

Is it gorey? Yes. Is this the kind of thing teenage boys want to see? Yes. Does it serve a purpose? Yes! The staff of the Weapon X facility are a group of sadists who lie to themselves about Logan's humanity so they can conduct their experiments with an air of intellectual superiority. Logan's revenge on the doctors and lab techs, as violent as it is, stands in exact opposition to the high-tech torture he suffered at their hands. The swift and brutal deaths dealt out by Logan to his captors forces them to recognize their own humanity, even if it is just for the last few seconds of life they have left to them.

The subplot, a secret mission to North Korea, is a nicely drawn counterpoint to the horrors Logan suffers at the secret military complex. He is revealed to be an excellent soldier; smart, tough, capable, able to adapt, improvise, and overcome. He displays friendship, loyalty, and an abundance of natural courage. Just the kind of man you'd want at your side in any type of conflict.

    I highly recommend this book!

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing -- where's Logan in all of this?.......2005-03-02

I was so excited to buy this book...

...but it was a real disappointment. I read it in one sitting, and it quickly blurred into a meaningless gorefest. People don't just die -- they die in a spatter of blood, intestines, and brain fragments spread across a ten-foot swath, the uselessness of which is commented upon by many of the book's side characters. I have no problem with gore when it's done well, but it must also serve a purpose. After the first time or two, this doesn't, not even to introduce newbies to Wolverine. Fans know what Wolvie is capable of, but there are a lot better ways to showcase it.

Having the story alternate between Logan's mission and his torture as he becomes Weapon X mitigates some of the unendingly useless carnage, but it isn't enough. Too much of Logan is missing. As Frank Miller and Chris Claremont would be the first to tell you, Logan is a lot more than a berserker, but that's about all this book shows. I wanted to see a lot more of the ex-samaurai, Patch, the X-Man. Wolverine is such a rich, complex character. That Logan is not in this book.

The text is reasonably well written, which is the only reason I gave it two stars. The story had a lot of promise but didn't deliver.

5 out of 5 stars Keeps you nailed in your seat.......2005-01-06

This is good and tough. But then, Logan is, his life story is.
The Weapon X storyline, written and drawn by Barry Windsor-Smith, is the basis for this novel. I guess this book might be a bit difficult to understand without that knowledge, or without a bit of background information on the mutants and humans involved. Descriptions of the characters are only minimal which from time to time could pose a problem for those who don't know what this is all about. For all the others, it doesn't. It pushes your imagination even further.
Because the graphic novel Weapon X ranks among the all time best I suggest to those who don't know it, just buy both and enjoy.

    4 out of 5 stars Weapon X---Wicked Sci-Fi!!!.......2004-11-17

I had a lot of doubts when thinking about Wolverine without pictures. I read the Barry-Windsor Smith story a long time ago, and the graphic novel story is excellent. But Cerasini the author of this book does a great job of capturing the feel of the original story while at the same time telling a much different story and it is great in its own right. He showed facets of Logan's personallity and memories that I would have never thought of. Plus, the perspectives of the scientists and the other characters really keep the plot suspenseful and dark. They should continue this series on Logan. Plus, the jacket art and art on the actual book look phenomenal!

      5 out of 5 stars The Best.......2007-10-10

One of the best zombie movie ever made. The story is verry entertaining, the gore incredible. The best movie of George Romero.See the remake who has the same title.

3 out of 5 stars Not as Good as Romero's Other Zombie Movies........2007-10-03

Okay people, call me stupid, call me crazy, call me whatever you want, but to be completely honest I don't think this movie is anywhere near as good as Romero's other Living Dead films, and that includes Land of the Dead (Unrated Edition) and there are a few reasons for that.

Night of the Living Dead (Millennium Edition) is better because it captures the racial tensions of the time much more effectively than Dawn of the Dead. In Night, the black and white characters fight with each other constantly, ending up bringing about the destruction of both parties. The acting in Night was far better than what we got in Dawn, and the films time was used more effectively, and by that I mean there wasn't any filler in it.

Day of the Dead [Blu-ray] is better because it is easily the scariest of the four, has the best effects, and really shows in a chilling way the way people collapse without any outside authority and order to keep them in check. It explores the zombie virus much more than Night and Dawn and sheds some light on just how bad the situation is for the survivors. The underground setting is very chilling. The lighting, the enclosed halls, the chained up zombies in every other room just gives you an overall sense of dread. Dawn of the Dead was mostly in the open in a familiar setting (a shopping mall) and with the lights always being on. Plus the zombies were hardly scary with their blue face paint and their swaying back and forth.

Land of the Dead (Unrated Edition) is better because out of the four its probably the darkest and creepiest one of all. it shows the world of the undead in a very depressing and hopeless way and how the few survivors left take advantage of each other in order to enhance their own standard of living.

Dawn of the Dead, although good, is not a great movie. As a pure horror movie, it fails to deliver enough scars and frights to keep modern horror fans interested (and before you go off on me, know that i found Night of the Living Dead very scary). The setting is too bright and wide open, very few times are our characters actually caught in an enclosed and dark place, and even when they are it's normally one or maybe two zombies chasing them. As a social commentary, Night of the Living Dead blows it completely out of the water. Race is hardly an issue in this movie, and although I understand it's about consumerism, consumerism just isn't that big of a deal anymore so it dates the movie considerably. Where this movie really shines is in its hummer. Ironically the movie that so many call scary is funnier than it is frightening. Zombies being hit in the face with pies and beer bottles is funny no matter who you are. As all three put together, horror movie, social commentary, and comedy, it's a pretty decent movie with its good and bad moments. it may not be great, but it is a must see for any zombie fan. if you've read this review, please leave a comment.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Horror Film of the 20th C IMO.......2007-09-26

"When there's no more room in hell, the dead will walk the earth." That's what it's all about.

This is IMO the finest horror film of the 20th Century, and I've watched a lot of them, believe me. Also the finest George Romero has ever done. If you have a strong stomach and an active mind, this movie is for you. The only complaint I'd have is I've watched an unabridged version and seen a couple moments edited out of this one. On the + side, there are a lot of interviews etc. on this version that are definite additions.

For those interested in a more literary sense, it's really an allegory comparable to Orwell's "Animal Farm," a story about American society and corruption resulting from greed. It's also a period piece, inasmuch as its setting is the lone survivors of a plague take refuge in a shoppng mall, back when shopping malls were a new thing (imagine that!).

But if you don't care bout that literary mumbo-jumbo, the movie is still horrific and full of classic horror moments. There is not a movie like this out there now, and not likely to be again, AFAIK.

5 out of 5 stars Best of the Dead.......2007-09-25

George Romero can rest assured that his zombie classic will not become dated over time, despite advances in special effects, cinematography, and makeup because Dawn of the Dead is in a league of its own in terms of story, characterization, themes, and overall ambience.

The success of Romero's "Dead" films lies in an often duplicated trait of horror films: isolation. It's something that Romero has mastered to a tee. While seemingly simple, the concept of keeping the characters in an abandoned shopping mall with a bunch of zombies creates a slight fear among its viewers, whether your watching it at home or in a theater. It's been repeated time and again, but Romero's ability to isolate his characters is a hallmark of his films.

Romero's characters are also more complex than those in a basic horror film. While traditional horror films have characters suffer from pure stupidity, Romero is more interested in human instincts and characters succumbing to their own vices or even their own primal urges. This is found in the way the survivors decide to not only explore, but get more than they need in the shopping mall.

Besides being a wonderful horror film, however, it's so much more, as other viewers have noted. I think no other horror film addresses the concept of consumerism, down to the point of comparing shoppers to zombies. The film's finale is riddled with irony - and you might even be granted a smirk here and there.

As for its timelessness, beyond the film's themes, Romero has created a film that, even if effects don't date well (and they actually do pretty well, especially for the time, gotta love Savini), feels terrifying. I think being trapped in a store is one of those nightmares everyone has. This film may be the reason why.

Something has breached the barrier between the dead and the living, and the dead are coming back to walk the earth, not to mention eat the living.

Slowly people begin to realise that is something wrong, but react too slowly, and the dead take over. Some small number of survivors try and hold out.

It was a really great book about how Bruce had to find out whopoisoned him. Everyone seemed suspicious and so he had no idea tillhe ran out of everyone else and when there was like an hour left he figured it out. I had no idea it would be the person it was. I recommend that all SVH and SVU fans should read this book. I think it is one of the best super thrillers in the SVU series. All the twists seemed to make pretty much no sense until the end when they all came together perfectly. So everyone, READ THIS BOOK!

      4 out of 5 stars Only one tinney-winney problem..........2005-05-01

I LOVED Dawn of the Dead. When I first saw at the age of 12 it changed my life. 10 years later I'm still obsessed. So of course I loved the comic. I won't go into the the 2004 remake, let's be honest: it was a remake in name only (whoever let the same guy who wrote the "Scooby Doo" movie scripts write that one should be shot). Anyway the comic was terrific except for the single fact that the characters were too attractive. Let me explain:
In the original Romero films one thing that always stood out for me was the fact that these were ordinary people. They weren't your typical Hollywood phonies victimized by the rampant ageism and physical appearence standards of American pop culture. Let's be honest: Fran was not terribly attractive, she was plain. Nor were the other three anything special: Peter, Roger, and Steven. To quote Peter: "They're us, that's all..." That's what makes the films so terrific.
So I wouldn't have made Fran look like April O'Neil from TMNT. That's all I wanted to say. If you disagree I understand.
      (...)

1 out of 5 stars Too much room in Hell.......2004-11-10

If you're a Dawn fanatic, don't get too excited about this panel-by-panel re-drawing of Romero's classic.

On the one hand, you would think that the pink-blooded, sometimes comic-bookish tone and characters of the film would translate well to a comic book. On the other hand, a panel-by-panel presentation of the film we know and love is not only unnecessary, but it's not even well done.

The artwork is lame, the color is blah, the inking is serviceable, the whole thing is rather pointless. There's gore, sure, but it's almost too much, too late. Nothing is done with the themes of the film, nothing is done to increase appreciation of a horror classic.

If you want anything 'literary' with regards to Dawn, track down the novelization that Romero co-write when the film appeared. Heck, even track down the academic study of Romero's work. The latest Dawn Ultimate DVD box set (highly recommended) contains the first issue of this 3 book series. Don't even bother to 'collect them all'!

5 out of 5 stars A MUST FOR ANY HORROR FAN.......2004-11-03

Steve Niles's book "Dawn Of The Dead" is a graphic must-read for any horror fan. I have read this book and I found It to be an addicting and well written piece of literature. I would reccomend this book to any fan of the horror genre.

      1 out of 5 stars Blood Thinner.......2004-10-16

When there's no more room in Hell, Steve Niles will walk the Earth---doing a panel-for-panel redraw of George Romero's "Dawn of the Dead." If you're reading this, chances are you have an insatiable appetite for the Dead, and the very prospect of the prolific, imaginative Niles (who turned out the thin but entertaining "30 Days of Night") paired up with Romero's classic flesh-eaters makes you hungry. Hungry, if not for brains, then at least for a rousingly good graphic novel with ample amounts of blood, gore, brains, fear, loathing, and of course zombies.

If that's what you're looking for, then you've come to the wrong place.

I had just gleefully plucked up a copy of Anchor Bay's lavish "Dawn of the Dead Ultimate Edition" DVD set, and so my guard was down as I wandered into that wretched hive of scum and villainy, my local comics shop. That's exactly how guys get it in zombie flicks---they go into the dark warehouse without the shotgun, without a flashlight, totally unprepared. In seconds I was overpowered by the blood-red cover of "Dawn of the Dead", captivated by the slack, staring eyes of a zombie, its hungry eyes devouring me from the cover, staring out of a crowd of the undead, their hands pressed up to tear my face off and devour me alive.

In other words, I was dead meat.

By the time I was infected---meaning, by the time I had bought the thing and taken it home with me---it was all over. Far from being thrilled, nervous, or satisfied, I felt bored, disappointed, and cheated. Worst of all, as I turned my blank-eyed, slack-jawed face up to the sky, I had nobody waiting with a shotgun to put me out of my misery.

What do you get? 1) A panel-by-panel reshoot of "Dawn" comprising three "issues"---literally a redraw of the movie, from the frenzy at the newsroom, to the grisly raid on the Project, to the flight to the mall, and back onto the whirly-bird. If you've seen "Dawn'", then you know what you're getting---and you're getting no more than that. 2) A quick intro blurb by George Romero---he's getting royalties so you'd think he would give us something juicy, but it's barely a paragraph with a note of thanks to the design team---don't blink or you'll miss it. 3) A few pages of stills from the movie. Wow.

Now, if you're like me, even the idea of a strict reshoot of "Dawn of the Dead" in graphic novel form---with Niles at the helm---sounds intriguing. But sadly, Niles is so slavish in following the original film that there's absolutely nothing of interest here, no risks taken, no funky little sideroads explored. It was so dull that I dozed off about midway through, and finished the thing the next morning.

The artwork is slightly amusing, though---artist Chee missed his calling doing airplane safety-pamphlets. The artwork here looks like it has uniformly been culled from the illustrations you can find in any 747 magazine holder, which to me (sicko that I am) is blackly funny. Imagine seeing those funny , unreal cartoon passengers sliding off a yellow airplane escape slide, being chased by the hungry living dead (drawn in the same style), and you pretty much have the artwork of "Dawn of the Dead."

Chee shoves the pedal down hard when it comes to the gore, but frankly---it's just too over the top and cartoonish to have much of an effect, and it's certainly not worth the price of admission. When Chee's red stuff starts flowing and viscera starts flying, it's not Gray's Anatomy---it's more like your mom's week-old lasagna. If that does it for you, dig in.

The three issues bound here are also extremely bare-bones, so even some of the signature scenes from the movie---the zombie Hari-Krishna, for instance, who just makes a cameo appearance here---are cut from the comic. The only thing you get here that you won't get from Romero's classic is a single panel of an undead Elvis impersonator---great for a giggle, but not worth the cover price.

There are fresher corpses in the graveyard, folks. Pass.

2 out of 5 stars Stick with the movie.......2004-09-19

A Dawn of the Dead comic book? The idea itself has a lot going for it, considering that the film is one of the most revered and important films of all time in the horror genre, plus the book is scripted by 30 Days of Night scribe Steve Niles. Despite all that though, this three issue collection is surprisingly lame. Niles' script pretty much follows the story and dialogue of the film to a tee, but Chee's art is what hurts the book. Even though the film had it's share of gut ripping gore, many scenes where the graphic violence was only implied are in their full gory glory here. While that may be a plus for some, Chee's bloodlust isn't drawn very well, and it feels like he's letting the blood flow just for the sake of flowing. Not to mention that George Romero's symbolic underlining theme of mass consumerism devouring society is lost in this comic adaptation, making this look like an average run of the mill zombie story, something that the original Dawn of the Dead is definitely not. If you're a fan of the classic film, this may be worth a look if you're into comics, but all others are better left watching their DVD.

1 out of 5 stars NOT for panini makers. ONLY for pocket sandwich makers........2006-12-16

WARNING: Do not judge this book by its cover! The cover shows a panini-type sandwich, but the text and illustrations are EXCLUSIVELY FOR POCKET SANDWICHES which are pouch-like and sealed around the edges by bread-on-bread pressure contact within the pocket sandwich maker. The author has a disclaimer on page 1: "Some sandwich makers - or panini makers - do not shape sandwiches in this way [sealed around the edges]. Use common sense in making and adapting your recipes to your own sandwich maker." That should warn panini fans off this book.

The book does appear to have good recipes and advice for POCKET sandwich makers. Some differences between the two types of sandwich makers: (1) Since the pocket sandwich is sealed, it can handle all sorts of goopy ingredients that would escape a panini and burn. (2) Since pocket sandwiches are formed in uniform-size cavities, the ingredients have to be skimpy enough to fit inside, but (3) generous enough to force the top layer up against the cooker to toast it properly. Thus the pocket maker has added versatility in ingredient types, but the panini has added versatility in size, shape and thickness. (4) The panini can have those appetizing grill marks, the pocket can have a uniform toasted brown.

Better panini recipes are available elsewhere.
