Book Description

Suppose you quit your job, took out a second mortgage, and borrowed every penny of your in-laws' nest egg to start up a surefire new business. What if your partner ran off with all your money? What if you caught up with him? These are the questions Pete Hautman's hero faces in Rag Man, a wryly funny, Faustian tale of a good man going bad.

Mack MacWray's new clothing manufacturing company was wildly successful -- until the day his charming, street-savvy partner, Lars Larson, disappeared with all the assets, leaving Mack stuck with nothing but debts and shattered dreams. Devastated, Mack thinks he has nothing left to live for until, at the edge of a cliff on the idyllic Mexican resort of Isla Mujeres, he comes face-to-face with his former partner. Mack discovers something about himself that fateful afternoon -- that maybe he's not such a nice guy after all. After push comes to shove, Mack must live with what he has become. Mack returns to the U.S. with his moral compass demagnetized and discovers a world of opportunity. Without the ball and chain of guilt and accountability, making money is all but guaranteed. He transforms himself from bankrupt loser to hard-nosed success story -- but at what cost? His wife wants the old Mack back; her best friend wants Mack in bed; Lars's widow wants money (or revenge); and Detective Jerry Pleasant wants answers -- or maybe more.

As the pace quickens and tensions rise, these characters begin to surprise even themselves. Pete Hautman treads the line between psychological darkness and laugh-out-loud funny as he asks tough questions about the nature of good and evil -- and offers some unexpected answers.

4 out of 5 stars a modern morality tale.......2004-01-01

What happens when you abruptly discover that after years of ordinary labor, acquisition of all the usual attributes and goods of a reasonably calm and settled life, there's a different person inside you? How do you react when you discover the dark side? What do you do when your moral compass breaks?

For decades, comfortably married Mack Wray has worked away in the garment business in the Twin Cities. He's good with machines, a hard worker and he gets the job done. Life in Minnesota is pretty much okay. If there aren't a lot of soaring highs, there aren't any disasters either.

But then comes Lars Larson, the people person. He persuades Mack to take a flier, to reach for that brass ring. Mack re-mortgages his house, borrows heavily wherever he can, including from his in-laws and quits his steady job. He and Larson are now in business together. They establish a new specialty garment manufacturing company. Mack Wray, the rag man, is in charge of production and Larson, the people person, handles sales.

The purchase orders pour in and Larson arranges with Mack's friendly banker to lend money against those purchase orders. Money flows and things are looking great. And then one day, Mack discovers that Larson has disappeared, and he's taken every cent of cash in the company accounts. It gets worse. Mack Wray discovers a whole web of theft, fraud and other assorted chicanery, all part of Larson's history.

What do Mack and his wife do as creditors circle? They take a free vacation to Mexico. What Mack discovers in Mexico, about Larson and about himself, will surprise and delight readers. In scene after snappy scene, the author brings us up short with sardonic and trenchant wit, with keen-sighted observation. The plot, well realized and fast-paced, has more than enough twists and reverses to satisfy the most ardent mystery/adventure fan. Hautman has peopled his novel with characters who climb off the page and dance you around the room. They are rich and multi-dimensional and their language is always true.

Through the length of this delightful and dark and often explicit novel, Mack Wray discovers dimensions to himself he never realized he possessed. You may not laugh out loud, but you'll experience many a satisfying chuckle.

3 out of 5 stars Didn't Find It All That Funny--Pretty Downbeat.......2003-08-19

One of the books I read while I was away for a two-week vacation was Pete Hautman's _Rag Man_. The blurbs on the book led me to expect a rollicking, comedic story along the lines of Carl Hiaasen, but this was a pretty downbeat and ultimately depressing story.

The book follows what happens when Mack MacWray, a decent, amiable guy who works as a sewer for a sportswear company is conned into leaving and starting his own clothing company by the smooth Lars Larson. Larson will be the "people" man and Mack the "rag" man. Everything seems to be going just great until the day that Larson, the beautiful secretary, and all the money disappear. Mack is left holding the bag and sees his dreams, his life, go up in smoke. His wife, a part-time travel agent, convinces him to take a short trip to Mexico, to give them a breather before coming back to deal with the mess--the broken loan, the unfilled orders, the layoff of his workers.

While in Mexico, Mack just happens to stumble upon Lars. It turns out Larson is a con man who has done this same thing before to a number of other poor schlubs. The secretary, Rita, is actually his wife and they have a condo in Mexico where they live in between jobs. Mack confronts Lars on a clifftop and an accident happens, leaving him with the choice whether to save Lars or ignore his pleas for help.

When the MacWrays return to the States, Mack is strangely energized. All of a sudden, he has what it takes to be completely and utterly ruthless in his business dealings and, before long, not only has he climbed out of the hole that Larson left him in, but he's making plans to expand, leasing a Mercedes, and looking to buy a big new house. His wife's best friend is on the prowl for him and before too long, Rita shows up, looking for the contents of her and Lars' safe deposit box, which a man resembling MacWray cleaned out.

This was a very noirish book, although for a while, the hapless loser MacWray is able to turn the tables and ride roughshod over everyone of his tormentors. When he starts to lose some of his hard edge, the blackmailing Rita, the adulterous affair, the loans on top of loans, all start coming back to haunt him. When his wife begins to miss the old Mack, the sensitive, communicative guy she married, and starts to suspect maybe he's having an affair with Rita, the stage is set for a rather downbeat conclusion. I'm not sure I really liked the book, though it is certainly well-written.

3 out of 5 stars From Rags To Riches -- And Back Again.......2002-11-05

Pete Hautman's Rag Man is a cautionary tale with a decidedly forties noir feel to the narrative. A good man has a bad experience with his crooked partner and sets out on a path of revenge. What happens when the two men hook up again in Mexico leads the good man to make a series of wrong assumptions about what's important in life, lessons he doesn't unlearn until it's too late. Not Hautman's best, or funniest, work, but compelling enough to keep me reading. For those looking for a funnier and more action-oriented crime novel, I suggest Niagara Fall by Stephen F. Wilcox; for those into madcap humor, try Tim Dorsey's latest, Triggerfish Twist.

4 out of 5 stars Maybe credible, perhaps not. Would make a good movie........2002-03-03

The RAG MAN is Mack, partner with Lars in a small garment manufacturing enterprise. Mack keeps the machinery running, while Lars is "the people guy" - the salesman. Lars is also the one who's just absconded to Mexico with the firm's funds and the statuesque blond bookkeeper, Rita. Left to deal with an empty payroll account, unfilled orders and snarling creditors, Mack is like a deer caught in the high beams. To Mack's wife, Paula, he's safe, honest, kind and utterly predictable. As she wistfully muses, why can't he stand up for himself, maybe "scare her a little"? As they say, one should be careful what is wished for.

Mack shortly returns from a visit to Mexico a radically changed man. As he aggressively retakes control of his tottering business from the bank, his complete personality about-face alters the lives of those most closely associated with him and the Lars fiasco: Paula, Rita, and the local gumshoe assigned to the criminal investigation of the embezzlement, Detective Pleasant.

The principal characters, even the top-heavy Rita, are ones we might meet in real life. (Well, eye-popping bimbos like Rita are regrettably missing from the social circles I inhabit.) Their problems could just as well be ours, and you'd think that would cause the reader to extend sympathy. But, as darker sides surface, maybe not. And is Mack's transformation by serendipitous events in Cancún believable? Perhaps not. (Personally, I didn't think it was.) What I can say is that RAG MAN is an adequately entertaining work of dark humor that explores the repercussions and just desserts of actions taken (or not) without being particularly profound. With the proper casting and screen adaptation, it would make a wonderful, low budget film reminiscent of FARGO or A SIMPLE PLAN.

RAG MAN is a short tale that can be finished in a day, or 15 minutes if you're a speed-reader. Thus, if it falls short in your opinion, then little time has been invested. Then again, you may consider it a 5-star morality play.

3 out of 5 stars Where's Joe Crow?.......2002-01-13

It pains me to throw mud at one of my favorite writers. I loved MORTAL NUTS (set at the Minnesota State Fair), THE RING GAME, and DRAWING DEAD, all featuring my man Joe Crow and an assemblage of minor characters who steal the show every time.
I guess you can't really blame Hautman for wanting to stretch.
He's got the full-fledged premise (If you try to be somebody you're not, you'll lose everything); he's got the interesting little tidbits about the Rag trade; he's got the layered perspectives.
Okay then, here's what's wrong: He kills off the most interesting character, Lars Larsen, almost immediately. Lars is a con man who cheats Mac MacWray (What's with the alliterative names?)out of the money the fool borrowed from his in-laws to start his own business. After Lars is gone, we're stuck with Casper Milktoast and his wife Dogbody, who get involved in soap opera shenanigans we're all read before. I also didn't buy the fact that Mac just happens to find Larson at Isla Mujeres. No set-up, no nothing. We're just supposed to believe it's a small, small world. Then there's the ending. Mac finds his way back to Mexico; he's a ruined man. He visits the edge of the cliff where his descent into treachery began. I kept screaming, "JUMP! JUMP!", but if he did, Hautman doesn't tell us he did. Maybe we were supposed to believe that Mac was essentially a good man and that he's there eating his liver for letting Lars Larson die or that he was trying to somehow turn back the clock so he'd have another chance to reach down and pull Lars out of the jaws of death. We learn about this epilogue through the eyes of the Mexican cop we met earlier, who just happens to be there at the right time to provide a denouement.
Oh well, I still have a few Joe Crow novels to look forward to. By the way, what the heck did you do with the Buddy Holly glasses, Pete?

That's the core question the members of the heavy metal band Gossamerr Axe must consider. It's vital to the success of the leader's quest that the women of her band at least believe in the power of their music to do more than entertain others and make them rock stars. "chick with a harp". the next Van Halen, a sixth century woman from ancient Ireland in twentieth century Denver - all of these describe Christa Cruitaire whose vow is to rescue her lover from the clutches of the Sidh before time runs out.
This is one of those book I never forget why I love. When I purchased it in 1990, I read and then re-read it. Since then the book gets read at least once annually (sometimes more). If you like different forms of magic in your books, this is a must read.

This pagan lesbian rock and roll fantasy is one of the best books I've ever read. Sadly it's far and away the best thing Ms.Baudino (one of my faves) ever wrote. I've read it at least six times and it is one of the three books I buy up every copy I see and pass out like trick or treat candy. It is the story of Christa, an ancient pagan druid harper in modern day colorado. And her quest to use heavy metal to free her lover from the clutches of The Fey. The music scenes are realistic as is the human interaction. I reccommend this book to anyone who likes pagans, heavy metal, or lesbians

5 out of 5 stars GREAT rock & roll fantasy.......2002-09-15

This is a beautiful, brilliant rock & roll fantasy about a harper from the land of Faerie who forms a heavy-metal rock & roll band 2 try & blast a hole thru reality & retrieve her lost love from The Other Side -- & it works. The adventures on The Other Side I found kinda boring, truthfully, but the main story is heartfelt, involving, vivid, & Baudino has the rock & roll Dtails down solid. The feeling of Bing in a rock band is perfectly evoked, & the way the heroine's faith, confidence & optimism rescues not only her lover but her bandmates makes 4 a glorious happy Nding. Not sure why this book failed 2 sell a million copies, but it's 1 of the great overlooked fantasies of R time. Fans of GOSSAMER AXE might also Njoy Lewis Shiner's GLIMPSES, which tackles some of the same tuff life-issues in a rock & roll framework.

5 out of 5 stars Enchanting and Exciting!.......2000-11-27

I am very saddened to learn that this book is no longer available in print. It is without a doubt one of the best books I have ever read, and is well worth the time it takes to search it out.

At the begining the premise seems a bit strange; a 200 year old Celtic harper forms a heavy metal band in order to save her lover from her fairie prison? As bizzare as it may sound, this is the truth. Christa's lover is imprisoned in a land where music can be used as a weapon, and only music can set her free. After several attempts to free the lover using her harp, Christa decides that only rock and roll is strong enough to win this battle.

Social issues of the 80s are addressed clearly; drugs, alcohol, rape, abuse, homosexuality, the church, and people's misconceptions of rock and roll music. A word of warning, there is some strong content here, and it may not be sutible for younger teenagers.

Musicians will find this book especially interesting. The theory is all there and correct, everything from modes to circle of fifths.

Do whatever you have to to get your hands on a copy of this book!

5 out of 5 stars A sensitive, convoluted, incredibly absorbing tale.......2000-06-06

This book somehow manages to be both highly entertaining, truly innovative, and deeply profound. The storyline--ancient Druid learns to play heavy metal in order to rescue a long-lost love--sounds almost silly, but Baudino makes it plausible and fun. The exploration of such themes as family ties, sexuality, and religious oppression is done with a light and even hand--though Christians may find themselves a little offended by the (mostly realistic) portrayal of Christianity. Pagans, homosexuals, and anyone who has ever felt like an outcast will find this book to be a healing spiritual experience. I don't suppose I really believe in a Goddess, but when reading Gossamer Axe I felt touched by Her hand. The amount of love and tenderness that Baudino put into this book is truly amazing.

                      Book Description

The most terrible of human conflicts is revealed in all of its brutal glory in this lavish, colour art book. Packed with stunning pictures, the book depicts mankind's epic struggle against the traitorous forces of WarmasterHorus after he allied with Chaos. The book also boasts many of John Blanche's concept sketches that inspired much of the finished artwork to Sabertooth Games' collectible card game. To accompany the images, GamesWorkshop's most respected keeper of knowledge, Alan Merrett, has unlocked the repositories to relate a wealth of information about the history of the Heresy and the stories behind the subject matter. Featuring work from awesome artists such as Adrian Smith, Clint Langley and many others, this high-quality art book is a grim testament to humanity's darkest hour!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Art book.......2005-12-05

While some people were dissapointed in the amount of text in this book, It is sold as a art book first and foremost. With some text and background info in it. Most of the art is pretty good, but there is some perfect works in it and some not so good. However if your a fan of sci-fi art, or warhammer 40k im pretty sure youll like or love the book. i liked it so much i want the other 2 books. And amazon is cheaper than most other sites selling this book. so i think its a win win situation.

2 out of 5 stars A glorified commercial for the card game.......2005-08-11

2.5 stars really, on the strength of the art, but still, for such an important conflict in the 40k universe I thought this was an incredibly weak offering from the Black Library.

I'd like to see them collect the three Horus Heresy volumes into one edition and strike out the irrelevent references to the game, but I'm not holding my breath there.

I can't recommend the Horus Heresy volumes unless you're a die hard 40k fan. For something worth your time *and* money, check out the Liber Chaotica instead!

3 out of 5 stars A beautiful book flawed by both its content and its lack thereof.......2005-07-03

The Horus Heresy is easily one of the most dramatic and elaborate events in the history of the dark futuristic universe of Warhammer 40,000 in particular and in modern science-fiction in general. Games Workshop's decision to create a multiple volume coffee table sized book detailing this conflict with sweeping images combined with informative text was a wise one. The community responded to the announcement with barely suppressed glee.

What we received was a mixed blessing. The cover of the book is beautiful, its paper is high quality gloss, its binding strong and sturdy and its size perfect for the "coffee-table" feel. However the art direction and content for this work is at true mixed bag. On one hand you have the staggeringly beautiful and epic creations of Adrian Smith and on the other the atrocious, barely intelligible, child-like etchings of John Blanche. I regret to inform you, dear reader, that Blanche's work is far more common of the two by a factor of around nine. Other artists are included all of which are superior to Blanche's hideous work and they make the book tolerable but only just so.

The information provided within the Horus Heresy: Visions of War is light at best, pages go by filled with visuals and images only. This would be tolerable, as this is at least in part an art book, if when information was provided it was both well-written and extensive. Unfortunately it is neither.

As a premise this book is a wonderful idea. Its execution, however, fails that vision almost completely. What we are left with is a tarnished diamond that you will want to own for its strengths and for its successes but its flaws will stare you in the face every time you open it.

Here's hoping that the subsequent volumes will be superior to the first.

4 out of 5 stars Some Good Art, Some Good Background Material.......2005-02-05

This art book is the first of a series that will be released, providing artwork and background material covering the Horus Heresy era of Games Workshop's "Warhammer 40,000" game setting. The artwork comes from a related collectible card game, "The Horus Heresy," from Sabertooth Games.

Taken by itself, this book alone may not be all that impressive to some: the amount of artwork presented is limited, and even though there is a good amount of written background material it covers only a small slice of the "historical" era in question. But as this is only the first in what will presumably be a multi-part set of books covering the whole of the Horus Heresy, it isn't really meant to stand on its own. It's only the first chapter, as it were, and will undoubtedly look much better when accompanied by others in the set.

I myself enjoyed seeing the artwork presented, and the background material is an essential account of events that shaped the fictional "history" of the Imperium of Man in GW's "Warhammer 40K Universe." Granted, it could have contained more art and more background.... but then it would have cost more, too!

                      This is a must-have for anyone who's a die-hard fan of Warhammer 40K.

3 out of 5 stars Decent, but not outstanding.......2004-11-10

For a book which carries a $29 list price, it was lacking in the depth of art it covered. As mentioned in the other review, the artwork was from the Warhammer Collectable Card Game (CCG) by Sabertooth games. There is nothing wrong with the art, but I would liked to have seen more work from Games Workshops own artists who done many excellent pieces. The text was really the high point for me. The background of the Horus Heresy was interesting and gave me some added understanding of the 40K universe. In short, a decent book but not a great one. Probably not worth buying at the list price.

                      4 out of 5 stars Good Book.......2007-06-10

I purchased this book for the drink recipes. The snacks are lagniappe. The introduction is well-written and provides insights into the city and some must-have bar info.

The drinks span the classics, even one form the late 19th century that I;d never heard of. There are new classics and sections for frozen and coffee drinks. The authors were nice enough to include some non-alcoholic beverages.

Use this book to round out your bar recipes or to make sure you're covered for any New Orleans themed party. There are some pictures, I'd prefer one for every drink.

By Bill Marsano, This book will add to anyone's parties. "Big Easy Cocktails: Jazzy Drinks And Savory Bites from New Orleans," by Chef Jimmy Bannos and John Demers (Ten Speed Press). The first nice touch here is the fact that a portion of the book's proceeds will be donated to support Hurricane Katrina relief efforts. Chef Bannos is a veteran exporter of Crescent City culture. Having established four of his New Garland Coffee Shops in Chicago, he's now out to colonize your rec room. Which, with this collection of 50 cocktail recipes (with musical selections recommended for each one) and 35 appetizer recipes, he would seem to have a very good chance of doing. New Orleans has a longstanding cocktail tradition and the Creole and Cajun touches in his Savory Bites who like music on his palate as well as in the air.--Bill Marsano is an award-winning writer on wines and spirits.
