Book Description
Vivienne Yellow, the unforgettable narrator of this arresting and witty debut, is an American woman who lies in traction in a Parisian hospital, her leg shattered after she was accidentally hit by a truck. Through hazy wormholes of memory, colored by her own morphine-stoked sexual longings, we are drawn into her past: Exactly what happened to her as she tried to cross rue de Cherche Midi, her wildly adulterous marriage to an emotionally distant man, and her relationship with her father, the famously charismatic naturalist Maurice Yellow. Bound to her bed and trapped by her own thoughts, Vivienne's only link to the outside world is a fellow patient, Sonia, an acid-tongued French teenager with a failing heart. Over the course of her musings, Vivienne comes to understand one thing: sex is her refuge, a notion oddly reaffirmed by the stories Sonia begins to bring her about a new patient, an innocent refugee from the Kosovo crisis who had tried to save herself by marrying the first man she met. Ribald and funny, with a rich Dorothy Parker bitterness, Promiscuous Unbound traces the relationship between memory and love and loss and reveals each woman's unorthodox search for salvation.

a really nice edition.......2003-09-03
Rather than commenting about the plays themselves, I'm writing about this particular edition. Signet produces good editions of Shakespeare's plays. The footnotes are numerous, and the footnote mark in the body of the text is not intrusive (they use a superscripted 'o' instead of a number). The paper quality is good, and the font is quite clear.
This collection of four of the Bard's comedies is a very cost-effective way of getting four books for a lower price than if you bought them separately. It includes a 17-page scholarly introduction that's focused specifically on the four comedies here. The comedies then follow, with no intermediary text.
One thing that is missing is the nice introductory 50-page biographical sketch of the Bard found in other Signet Shakespeare books. I also have the Signet editions of Romeo & Juliet and Othello, and both of those have the same 50-page introduction. I do not know if the individual editions of these four comedies have the same, but I would think so. Hence, if you already have another Signet edition of any of the Bard's plays with that introduction, the omission of it here won't be a big deal at all.
I like this book........2001-05-01
It's a good book. It has an easy-to-read layout with round and readable type faces. Unlike many other Shakespeare books, it shows the names of characters in full without abbreviations so that you don't have to memorize the abbreviations or keep on guessing who's speaking at a given time. It also has nice space between each character's speech so that things are not crammed up to save space. It's easier on the eyes.
The book also comes with nice, succinct footnotes that explain what words mean in modern English without getting too technical or scholarly. It's a good book that's easy to use, readable, inexpensive and not so academical while providing good information. So, I'm happy with it.
Excellent Interpretation.......2001-03-10
This book is one of the best shakespeare books that i have seen. It offers clear interpretations of language that is uncommon in our time, often giving several differing interpretations which are still being debated by language experts. It is simple enough for a first time shakespeare reader, yet still retains all of the content. However, constantly looking at the footnotes, some of which can take up a fourth of a page, grows tiresome, which is why the book only gets 4 stars.

A classic that any fan of Anderson or Shakespeare will love.......2001-07-06
This is one of those books you want to keep and read again over the years. It's a historical what if? story. What if there was a world where Shakespeare's stories were history rather than fiction and in this world railroads were built 200 years early? It's a wonderful story with all the elements of fantasy of Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream" combined with the battle between Royalists and Roundheads in a world of premature steam industry. The only thing that would be more wonderful would be if it were twice as long! This is a book you can read today and it is still as great as when it was written.
A tour de force.......2001-06-02
This story is truly one-of-a-kind; a labor of love (being dedicated to the author's wife) as well as a tour de force. It can be savored on four levels: first as "simply" a fine and original fantasy novel; second as a clever and "natural" (that is, unforced) interweaving of characters and locales from Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream and The Tempest, with a light seasoning of Arthurian themes; thirdly as a masterful adaptation of the language rhythms of a Shakespeare play (with the chapters/acts divided into "scenes"); and finally as an extraordinary, subtle (that is, unobtrusive) integration of poetry (again a la Shakespeare) into prose narative. For example, chapters or "scenes" occasionally end with a rhymed couplet, but that is only the most obvious of the many Excellencies. All four levels are seamlessly incorporated in a most extraordinary manner. The first time I read this book - in 1974 - I was halfway through before I began to realize what the author had achieved. Thus lovers of fantasy can thoroughly enjoy the story, while connoisseurs of the English language will find additional reasons to rejoice. This book is a gem - a masterpiece. I have treasured my paperback copy for 27 years. I assume it is reprinted regularly, but I have never seen it again in bookstores. It deserves a fine hardcover "limited" edition with illuminated script highlights and four-color illustrations by a top artist sympathetic to the genre. I plan to commission one as soon as I win the power ball.
Absolutely superb! Deserves more than 5 stars!!!!!!.......1999-10-28
I am sometimes sorry I cannot give less than one star to some books I have read (I read hundreds of books professionally). On this occasion I am sorry I cannot give more than five stars.
It is absolutely superb, a perfect jewel of a book which I had never heard of and discovered only by chance. The heroic scale and width of concept, and I say this with all seriousness, can be called Shakespearean. Splendid descriptive writing, action and characters, with resonances at the very centre of great mytho-poetry. I knew Poul Anderson was a great writer, but this took my breath away! The best novel I have discovered in years!
An engaging, literate swashbuckler fantasy.......1997-09-05
This is one of my two or three favorite Poul Anderson books and one of my top 20 favorite novels, period. It's a combination alternate history-swashbuckler-magical fantasy set in the era of the war between Cavaliers and Roundheads, but with a difference: they have railroads already. Well plotted, well paced, inventive, suspenseful, great descriptions. Not too deep, though--just great fun. Characters: Traditional but not stereotypical hero, heroine, sidekick, villain, a few historical figures, some familiar literary non-humans and a guest cameo appearance by a character from one of my other favorite stories of his. This story makes one really appreciate how well grounded in history and literature Anderson is. He also displays that all-too-rare ability to use the English language of the past with complete accuracy, a skill the lack of which can easily break the spell of an effort which might have otherwise succeeded. Attention English majors: There's one other feature I won't completely give away so as not to spoil your fun of discovery, but I will say--pay close attention to the dialog

This book, which includes A Midsummer Night's Dream, The Winter's Tale, and The Tempest, is for the student of Shakespeare, whether in the theatre class or the literature class. It is for actors of Shakespeare, and for the directors. It is a practical guide and an insightful critique. It is also immensely readable.

The Enemy Papers
ASIN: 0595201725 |
Book Description
“This title is just a front for a collection of 12 stories, several of which are among the finest written within Longyear’s time as a writer. Hardly any of the dozen end as one might expect, and yet they’re not possessed of twist endings, merely good ones. Longyear is the kind of quality writer who sets up so complete a segment of life within a story, that all possibilities of a real occurrence come through.” —STARLOG
Customer Reviews:
A spiffy collection of short stories, including a hugo nominee.......2007-08-18
This is a spiffy collection of short stories by the author, and includes the stories listed below. Rating my enjoyability of each of the component stories (on a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being the highest):
Rating & Title
9 - Forepiece (Prologue)
8 - Collector's Item
7 - Dreams
7 - The House of If
6 - The Initiation
9 - The Portrait of Baron Negay
8 - SHAWNA, Ltd.
8 - A Time For Terror
9 - The Homecoming (Hugo Nominee)
8 - Twist Ending
10 - Catch The Sun
9 - Adagio
7 - Where Do You Get Your Ideas ?
Although the most loudly trumpeted piece in this collection is "The Homecoming" (which was nominated for a Hugo award), my personal favorite is, by far, "Catch The Sun", which could easily have been a major award winner in it's own right, if it'd been published as a stand alone novel. In hindsight, I'd guess the only reason it didn't get the Hugo nod is that it was published right on the heels of Homecoming, in the same calendar year, right after the latter was nominated ... and was thus ineligible. In any case, it's the best of the bunch, in my reckoning.
This collection is a solid offering by Longyear, even though the title is a bit obscure, and doubtless deterred sales by confusing people walking past it in the book aisles.
Style wise, the stories in this collection are an odd mix of quirky ideas, developed into stories by the author. Some follow the same general style as Harlan Ellison and The Twilight Zone motif, and others are more in the hard scifi vein.
Overall, this is a very strong and enjoyable collection ... well worth the cover price, even if you have to buy it new.
One of my favorites.......2003-03-19
Read the introduction in this book. I know introductions are usually a waste of space, but Longyear is hilarious. And he gives you such deep insight into where he gets his ideas that you just can't pass it up.
I've lost track of how many times I've read and re-read this collection of short stories. Some are funny. Some are sober. They are all fascinating.
High quality short stories.......2000-04-10
I bought this book about 15 years ago and loved it. The stories were well thought out, original and just plain good. I still have my copy of this book and occasionally pull it out to read again. If you want to read several very good short stories this is the book for you

Customer Reviews:
Delicious! A bit misleading about the quantities........2007-09-16
The recipes in this book are delicious. You could open your own restaurant. I'm not Tamil, but I've eaten excellent Tamil food at friends' homes on several occasions. The recipes here taste closer to the real thing (as I remember it) than any other book I've tried.
One thing to be aware of: the quantities in her rasam recipes need to be scaled up if you're really going to feed the number of people she says. e.g. I make twice the quantity of her Ordinary Rasam to feed 4 people. On the other hand, her podis/powders will turn out to be in larger quantities than you need for immediate cooking. Of course, this is not a serious problem because they can be stored.
Excellent book.......2007-06-27
I would highly recommend this book. I borrowed it from one of my friend and then I bought it. You will not regret. Great book.
I'd give it 10 stars if I could!.......2007-02-03
I'm a South Indian myself and a total gourmand... apart from the classic "Cook & See" series, this is the book that results in the most authentic taste and flavor-filled dishes!
The Cook & See books are translated from Tamil and not very well at that... but the results speak for themselves.
This book, on the other hand, is written in English with good instructions... about the spice level, I think it's perfect but then I grew up eating this stuff!
So if you have a mild palate, I'd easily quarter the chiilies and lessen the spices a tad.
So if you are looking for a well-written book with good illustrations, with authentic flavor, I'd recommend this one!
Spices.......2006-11-23
Philip E. Mann, co-author of Vegetarian Revenge -Toasting and grinding spices for Indian Cuisine is an essential step. Toasting spices in a small fry pan with a ittle added olive oil makes the spice flavors blossom as outlined in this book. Spice grinding is easy if you use a small manual grinder (nicer spicer) or a small electric mill, rather than a mortar and pestle. Spices should be ground just before use: a common sight in India is a woman freshly-grinding spices on a stone rectangle with a cylindrical stone implement. Try toasting and grinding spices as detailed in this book, for rewarding flavor
Inspiration and perspiration.......2006-11-16
This is a great cookbook, with beautiful pictures and a wide range of recipes. It is even more useful because it lists variations one can try. I confess to having very little patience for the toasting and grinding of spices, so I have never made any of the recipes exactly as directed, but somehow they still always turn out delicious. The recipes look more complex than they really are, so just have faith and try one.
