"This book is dedicated to the Seventh-day Adventist Church. Its purpose is to correlate in concise, chronological form the tremendous events predicted to take place in the world and in the church just before the second coming of Christ.".
Great changes are soon to take place in our world, and the final movements will be rapid ones.--Testimonies for the Church, vol. 9, p.11. Historic, sweeping, and unprecedented change has come to characterize the last decade of the twentieth century. Who could have guessed that things would change so fast? is the question being asked by many witnesses to the unbelievable shifts taking place on the world political scene. But what of AIDS, the homeless, and the environment? Are the events now rocking out globe the ones described in Testimonies as rapid and final? How close are we to the long-awaited return of Christ? What changes will occur in the church before the loud cry is given? Preparation for the final Crisis organizes the dramatic events leading up to the second coming in the chronological form using passages from the Bible and the Spirit of prophecy. Its clear presentation of the last-day events is intended to guide the advent people as they prepare to meet their Lord.
Book Description
How do our ideas about dying influence the way we live? Life has often been envisioned as a journey, the river of time carrying us inexorably toward the unknown country--and in our day we increasingly turn to myth and magic, ritual and virtual reality, cloning and cryostasis in the hope of eluding the reality of the inevitable end. In this book a preeminent and eminently wise writer on death and dying proposes a new way of understanding our last transition. A fresh exploration of the final passage through life and perhaps through death, his work deftly interweaves historical and contemporary experiences and reflections to demonstrate that we are always on our way.
Drawing on a remarkable range of observations--from psychology, anthropology, religion, biology, and personal experience--Robert Kastenbaum re-envisions life's forward-looking progress, from early-childhood bedtime rituals to the many small rehearsals we stage for our final separation. Along the way he illuminates such moments and ideas as becoming a "corpsed person," going down to earth or up in flames, respecting or abusing (and eating) the dead, coping with "too many dead," conceiving and achieving a "good death," undertaking the journey of the dead, and learning to live through the scrimmage of daily life fully knowing that Eternity does not really come in a designer flask. Profound, insightful, often moving, this look at death as many cultures await it or approach it enriches our understanding of life as a never-ending passage.

A Book For Freedom.......2005-06-05
Kastenbaum is an "old hand" when it comes to death and dying and his experience and skill are seen in this book. He is one of the most prolific thanatologists and one of the most independent in his thinking and writing style.
It seems to me the purpose of this book is to free the reader by providing many different ideas on dying from different cultures. The author classifies the different types of dying in an intelligent way. There is a wealth of provocative insights into our own way of dying with the accent on the reader being able to develop a critical look at the different ways of dying from different cultures and times.
This book is not a how to book-it is not fromulaic. It is not hot cocoa for the mortal soul. It provides a lot of food for thought.
The weakness to this book is it fails to provide a fully constructive approach to the subject of dying because it doesnt provide the scaffolding for an individual to construct their own orientation to dying-given the materials the author has provided.
If youre looking for a book that provides a lot of perspective on dying with wit, insight, candor and style this book is a keeper.

Want to know what it can really be like to help a loved one through the dying process.......2007-02-19
I am the author of this book. I wrote it because I've been helping people through the dying process for 30 years now and it's not that awful dark place that we are afraid to talk about. It is a beautiful, spiritual birth into another dimension where our loved ones can finally heal. It's part of the circle of life. And, I'm telling stories that are completely true about how it can be if we start facing our and our loved ones truth. This is what is going on. Now how can I help to make this as smooth and comfortable as possible? These stories tell the reader how. And, these stories show us how it's really not in our hands. Spirit is guiding the whole process if we can get our egos out of the way and let it happen. And, woven into the process there is still humor and memories that will fill our hearts when we learn how to let go and let God.
This book will show the reader that the true nature of the dying process is spiritual!
Good reading !.......2006-12-26
The author handles a subject that is so hard to talk about, let alone write about. She takes us along when she visits loved ones, friends and patients before they die. She shares word for word the conversations of these people who in most cases wanted total honesty. Because of her writing, I was able to face the same situation without stiffling myself and my feelings. Anything my dying relative and anything I wanted to say -- is said thanks to her frank writing. A must read.
Very helpful book.......2003-11-19
I got my copy of "Final Passage" and sat down and read it in one day. Barbara Whitfield was so right about it being full of "aha's". I used a whole box of kleenex that day; it was emotionally wrenching, but I couldn't put it down. I have loaned it to my step-daughter (my husband, her dad died of cancer in 2001). She is having a very difficult time reading it because of the emotions it brings up, so she is taking one chapter at a time with lots of time in between.
I went ahead and ordered another copy along with "Spiritual Awakenings" I just started reading it and haven't had time to read much, but I wanted to say Barbara's books are very helpful for understanding some of life's difficult issues.
Final Passage.......2000-12-20
Below is a letter I sent to Barbara Whitfield after reading her book Final Passage. Please post this letter with her book information. Thank you very much.
Hello,
My name is Shirley and I just finished reading your book Final Passage. I loved it! I heard your interview on a local radio show a few weeks ago and you were discussing your book and it sounded very interesting to me. I lost my mother a year and a half ago to cancer and have been a little lost and confused since then. I wish I would have educated myself on the dying process before my mother died. I'm sure it would have made things easier. I feel better after reading your book. I was with my mother when she passed and I've always wondered what it was like for her in those last few moments. I believe your book shed some light on that for me. I was glad I could be there for her when she passed but it was really hard to watch. Anyway, I just wanted to let you know that I really enjoyed your book.
Have a Merry Christmas!
Shirley

FINAL PASSAGE HOME: "A Gathering of Family" is a compilation of chronological journal entries written in the summer of 2001 detailing the thoughts and remembrances of the Life and Death of a very special woman, my Aunt, Mrs. Ruby Walker Nash. After her diagnosis of cancer, I was blessed with the privilege of spending the remaining days of my Aunt's life with her, in an effort to capture her strength and her spirit from those days; I chronicled her passage and the events of those days into a journal. It is my pleasure, that as you read, you are able to enter those moments with me and remember that this Life we are given and the Family we have is truly a Blessed Gift.

The Inhabited Woman.......2007-09-11
Reading The Inhabited Woman (La mujer habitada) is, for a gringo such as myself, a transcultural experience. It is written in a vividly sensual, lyrical style that brings to life the culture of its unnamed Central American setting--presumed to be Nicaragua, Belli's homeland.
Faguas (read "Managua") stirred her pores, her zest for life. Faguas was sensuality. Body open, wide, sinuous; a woman's disorderly breasts made of earth, scattered about the landscape. Threatening. Beautiful. (translation mine)
Even in moments of irony, her descriptions retain this poetic quality:
From the street she could see the escalator, the great novelty, the only one in the whole country. The store had had to station janitors in the doorway to keep out the ragged little newspaper boys who, in the first days, ruined the pleasure of the elegant ladies being electronically elevated to consumerism.
This is above all the story of a young woman finding her place in a male-dominated society, in the professional world, in relationships, and in a dangerous time of social rebellion. Thus it examines in thoughtful detail both the interpersonal and the intrapersonal.
Lately Lavinia didn't understand herself. She didn't understand why it put her in a bad mood that Felipe didn't talk to her about the Movement. She didn't want to be in the Movement, she repeated to herself. And yet, to speak about it and ask about it had become an irrational attraction. A constant temptation, an inexplicable incitement. And she never imagined Felipe holding her back, containing her, denying her the knowledge.
The Inhabited Woman is deeply spiritual as well as political. The protagonist is aided in her self-discovery by the reborn spirit of a Native woman whose people had resisted the Spanish conquest five centuries earlier. (It's only fair to warn you that this history takes a grotesque turn at times.) Through this and other connections, Belli empowers us to feel the interrelatedness of the protagonist, her compatriots, her homeland, and ourselves. La mujer habitada is a powerful read, not just because of where it takes us but because of how it gets us there.
A Story of courage and passion.......2001-03-05
This is a unique story that intertwines the struggle and bravery of past warriors with the ones of today. For anyone who loves to read a book about human passion and love. For anyone who can relate to the feeling of belonging to a culture and being able to die for ideals, a country and family, will definitely find in this book the the inner rebel that many of us have against unjustice and abuse.
La Mujer Habitada.......2000-09-08
After almost a year of looking for this book I finally read it. This book is great it's about this beautiful archited named Lavina she is very independent and strong. She live in Nicaragua, in a time when rebellion was dangerous. She risk her life by entering this malisha group and she also falls in love. This story is passionate and very sad. Their is a ghost of this warrier women living in Lavina's tree, she studies her and goes into her mind, thoughts and dreams.

Book Description
No way out ...
Twelve men survived the crash when a blinding, unexpected sandstorm sent their Skytruck air freighter plummeting to the Earth. Now they are in Hell, stranded and alone in the empty wastes of the Sahara, facing a slow, agonizing death under the unrelenting Libyan sun. Two of them have the skills to avert a terrible fate: the brilliant, obsessed engineer Stringer, and the tormented pilot Towns. Bitter enemies, they must now work together to build an impossible dream from the wreckage and fly it to freedom ... if madness, rage, suspicion, and the merciless desert don't destroy them first.
This is a story so riveting it inspired two major motion pictures -- the memorable 1965 film starring Jimmy Stewart and the 2004 film starring Dennis Quaid.

A Best All-Time Adventure Story.......2007-05-09
If you haven't read this all-time best adventure story, do so. You're in for a treat (it beats the movie versions hands down).
Also read "Cry Wolf," by Wilbur Smith--another great African story. Cry Wolf And don't miss "The Sands of Kalahari." The Sands of Kalahari
Superb book...........2005-12-08
I am surprised to find so very few reviewers here! This is one of the best novels that I have ever read. I saw the movie (older one) after reading the book and did not like it a whole lot. But then again, it is so difficult to make a movie out of this book. If you have seen the movie and think that there is no point in reading the book, then please think again. There is so much in this book that can never be translated onto celluloid. The book is a fascinating study of human personality. It is about the very society in which we live - the author presents a cross section of the society and attempts to show us the roles played by different types of individuals. The book is about the collision between the almost heartless objectivity of a scholar and the sensitivity of a humanist. Its about clash of egos, its about pettiness of feeble minds, its about lust. Its about duty, its about courage, its about sacrifice. Its about adversity that always manages to strip us of our masks and reveal us for who we really are. And its about the thing called hope that ridiculously manages to survive almost all the time.
Be warned that the book goes into the technical details of plane-building. I did not understand all of those details but still enjoyed the book. If you are into model aircrafts and stuff you will enjoy this book even more.
The author definitely did not have the kind of skills that, say, Dostoevsky had - but Stringer is as unforgettable as Raskolnikov. You've got to meet him.
Great story of survival!.......2005-10-06
This book has a fairly simple overall plot. A plane crashes in the desert, and when dealing with dire conditions the men who survive the crash try to find a way to survive the desert. The writing is gripping, and the personalities of the characters build through the book. The descriptions of the harsh conditions of the desert on the men, leave the reader disturbed, but wanting to read more. Themes that include the power and beauty of nature are intertwined throughout the book. Survival for these men is presented almost as a complicated puzzle which must be solved to avoid deadly consequences. It was a page turner for me- the writing is excellent!
Exciting, well-told survivor story .......2005-03-06
The Flight of the Phoenix by Elleston Trevor is an excellent story that has spawned two very good movies. Pilot Frank "Shut It Down" Towns is sent to shut down an oil rig that has gone dry in the middle of the Libyan desert. On the way home, the plane crashes in a horrific sandstorm, killing two of the passengers. The survivors of the crash must band together to survive. Their original plan is to sit tight and wait for someone to come and rescue them until one of the passengers, a young aircraft designer named Stringer, proposed building a new plane out of the wreckage and flying to safety. What follows is a race against time as the survivors must battle the elements with limited supplies as they try to survive.
Elleston Trevor's novel is a well-told character study of what happens when people are placed in horrific conditions. Much of the novel centers around the fight for authority between Towns, the experienced yet self-doubting pilot, and Stringer, the young, obsessed aircraft designer. By the end of the novel, Trevor has fleshed out all the characters so the reader legitimately cares whether they survive or not. If you enjoy this novel, check out the 1965 classic starring Jimmy Stewart and Richard Attenborough and the exciting 2004 remake starring Dennis Quaid and Giovanni Ribisi. For a well-told story with believable characters and an unexpected twist, check out Elleston Trevor's Flight of the Phoenix!
Asperger's Syndrome character makes this book stand out.......2004-11-26
"Flight of the Phoenix" held my attention, as an adventure novel should. What makes this book stand out is a character who is ignored for the first half of the book, because he's quiet and keeps to himself. In the middle of the book he becomes the most important character. In the penultimate chapter the plot twists around this character in what has to be most unexpected surprise I've ever seen in a novel. The character is a young engineer with Asperger's Syndrome, although the book was written thirty years before Asperger's Syndrome was discovered. Individuals with this form of autism are extremely intelligent but have poor social skills. They're ability to focus on a task can be their greatest strength or their downfall. In "Flight of the Phoenix" this is what saves the men, but then...well, I won't give away the plot! I listened to the audio download, which was very good except you really need to see what a Skytruck looks like, as the characters talk about different parts of the airplane wreckage. A quick Google search will find you photos of this type of aircraft.

3 books stretched out to 5.......2006-08-26
Let me say right off that my 2-star review is for the series, not for this book alone. This book, and the second book in the series, are both 5-star books. They're tightly plotted, intricate, fast-moving, and impossible to put down.
Books 3 to 5, however, are one good book stretched out to fill three covers. In each, I read on while wondering when something relevant was going to happen. Meaningless subplots and irrelevant characters take over, and we are given hints of excitement to come before being bogged down in more subplots. I must admit that I skimmed 300 pages of the fifth book, finding nothing relevant in them.
But the worst was yet to come. Having built expectation for five books toward the ultimate confrontation between the main protagonist and the main antagonist, the authors betray their readers by denying them that confrontation in order to provide a reason for writing future books. We are expected to be satisfied with the pair trading a few weak phrases before the series ends with a whimper.
I've rarely seen a series start with such promise, only to end in such disappointment.
Best Space Opera EVER.......2002-07-04
If anyone thinks this series is not well written or thought out, they apparently did not read the books but only skimmed them. I have read all 5 books 4 or 5 times already, and will again I am sure. This is a must have series for any serious science fiction reader. I think most hard core sci fi devotees would love the writing. Some neo-sci fi readers may not enjoy it as much because it is very technical in places, very detailed in others.
I will not delve into the storyline except to say there is intrigue, betrayal and surprise around every corner and with each turn of the page. Yes characters get killed. This is not a happy "up" series. It is very real and hits you hard with the emotions it evokes. I found myself caring greatly for all of the characters in the book, except for Eusabian of course. He is one evil person.
I do agree it is very difficult to find all of the books in one place. I even wrote to Sherwood Smith at one point to find out if the final book was written a number of years back. (He answered my e-mail within a day or two by the way). A re-issue would be great. If more people could find it, more people would fall in love with the series.
Dunnett-style space opera.......2001-08-23
.... Well this is not young adult fiction but it's the best space opera I have ever read : funny, exciting, intelligent. The characterization is very good, and if characters are not exactly what they appear at first sight, there are quite enough clues for the carefull reader, and it's part of what makes the books so vivid and intelligent.
The only problem with this series is how ridiculously difficult it is to get all 5 of these books. A reissue would be nice, a book 6 even nicer - book 5 wrapps up almost everything, but there is definite room for another sequel.
Original Space Opera with High Style.......1998-04-15
Jerrode Eusabian of Dol'jhar has waited twenty years to complete his vengeance against Gelasaar hai-Arkad, the Panarch of the Thousand Suns. Eusabian's takeover goes according to plan until Gelasaar's wastrel third son, Brandon, commits the unthinkable, unforgivable sin of refusing to show up for his own coming-of-age ceremony, where Eusabian planned to have him killed. With both his brothers dead and Gelasaar captured, Brandon -- a drunken womanizer and naval academy washout -- becomes the Panarchy's last hope. Thus begins a vast and wonderful original space opera. Smith and Trowbridge have gone beyond the usual, thinly created, loosely imagined trappings of an interstellar society to create a fully realized political, social, economic and military system. It takes a little time to get into this series because of the complexity of the setting, but readers will be richly rewarded for their effort. The characters are deliciously complex, headed up by the implacable villain Eusabian, the unpredictable Prince Brandon, and the cold, inscrutable Rifter captain Vi'ya. The space battles are the best I have ever read, making great use of relativistic possibilities. The alien species of the Kelly, the Eya'a, and the Ur are more than humans-in-costume or afterthought set decoration, which was a pleasant surprise. The action is gripping, hair-raising, edge-of-your-seat as Brandon is harried across space, an unlikely hero in improbable company. More, it's laugh aloud *funny* in places -- something else that was a nice surprise. Kudos to Smith and Trowbridge. This is how space opera should be done.
Some brilliant new ideas.......1997-11-30
This series as a whole was wonderful. From an exotic and well thought out interstellar political system, to the spectacular space battles (THE most realistic in literature, with ships actually using the possibilities offered by realativity to the fullest, and AWESOME space marines!) While not a classic I certainly think it worth a read, if only for the wealth of original ideas.

Book Description
Do your cakes collapse, soufflés slump, cookies crumble, and fruit pies fail? For those living at high altitude, baking can be a challenge at best, or a total disaster. More than thirty-four of the fifty United States, plus many Canadian regions, have cities and towns at altitudes of more than 2,500 feet, yet there are hardly any cookbooks that address the special needs of these local bakers. Until now. Award-winning cookbook author
Susan G. Purdy has finally written the first-ever foolproof guide to high-altitude baking.
Purdy has actually "gone there and done that," staying as long as it took to bake these recipes to perfection at five different locations -- and elevations -- across thecountry. In
Pie in the Sky, Purdy leaves behind old conversion tables, disproves many oft-repeated calculations and adjustments, and presents reliable recipes in their entirety for each altitude. She takes out the tinkering and guarantees success at any height.
In addition, she explains the hows and whys, gives tips and hints for problems specific to every altitude, and generally demystifies the subject of atmospheric obstacles that cause favorite recipes to flop. Whether they live in the eastern mountains or the far west, in Boston, Massachusetts; Boone, North Carolina; or Santa Fe, New Mexico; home bakers as well as experienced chefs will love the wide range of easy-to-make treats including Mile-High Lemon Meringue Pie, Coconut Cake with Coconut Icing, Paradise Peak Chocolate Soufflé, Vail Lemon-Poppy Seed Loaf, Celestial Challah, and Sour Cream Streusel Coffee Cake.
Every recipe was tested at sea level (Connecticut), 3,000 feet (North Carolina and Virginia), 5,000 feet (Idaho and Colorado), 7,000 feet (New Mexico), and 10,000 feet (Colorado) and can be used at these elevations or any points in between.

Helpful Guide.......2007-09-09
I really like that Ms. Purdy is so meticulous about researching these recipes at different altitudes--it seems that the other high-altitude cookbooks are more general. She also includes a lot of helpful advice--I refer to this book all the time, especially when trying to adapt a recipe to high-altitude. I also once e-mailed her a question, and she responded, something I respect in an author. I've had mixed results with the recipes--some have turned out kind of dry, such as the cornbread, the blueberry muffins, and the Trout Dale Oatmeal-Raisin Cookies. The chocolate buttermilk cake was kind of bland, the Classic 1-2-3-4 Cake was dense, the pecan pie took quite a while to set, the lemon poppyseed loaf got too brown on the sides. Sometimes it's hard to know if it's the recipe or perhaps some mistake I've made or a bad pan or overheated oven or something. I've found sometimes I have to play with the cooking times. But other recipes have been successes, such as the buttermilk biscuits, the applesauce cake, the blueberry scones, the sour cream streusel coffee cake, the Danish Oat Cookies, the brownies, the Plum Good Crumb Pie and the Peach-Ginger Crisp. Of these, I'd say the Danish Oat Cookies and Peach-Ginger Crisp are my favorites.
GREAT book.......2007-08-26
I received this book for Xmas and have used to nonstop. The recipes are great and her suggestions for adjusting other recipes works every time. BUY this book, if you live at a high elevation.
Confusing? Not at all!!!!!!!.......2007-08-14
This book absolutely DOES tell you how to bake at high altitudes. Every type of baked good is covered, explaining the science behind the problems encountered and how to fix them. The recipes are very good as well. I have tried most of the books on this topic, and this one is the best.
WOW........2007-07-03
Yeah that about sums up this book. The author did an amazing job in figuring out excellent recipes for high (and low) altitudes, and has given priceless tips on how to bake with any other recipes you have personally at high altitudes, & its hardcover, which to me is always a plus for a cookbook :)
Pie in the Sky Confusion.......2007-05-12
I moved from Sea Level to over 7000 ft. I needed a book to help me learn to bake at this higher altitude. This is not a good book for that. It gives a lot of recipes only two of which I could find the ingredients to try. Almost every recipe calls for buttermilk. They do not sell Buttermilk in the country where I now live. The two cakes I made turned out badly. The Angel food cake was like styrofoam after a day. The other chocolate cake had all the chocolate flavor of a brick. I am very unhappy with this purchase.
The book is full of stories from the author on her high altitude mistakes. I did not make this purchase for stories..
