5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2007-07-06

This book was great. I almost felt like I was riding in the car with these three ladies on their journey.

1 out of 5 stars Do Not Bother.......2005-12-27

I am not sure why other reviewers gave this 5 stars - if I could give this no stars then I would. Do not waste any of your precious reading time on this meandering novel. There is no resolution and the child in this novel keeps talking about the "Great Mystery" - the great mystery to me is why would anybody give this novel an outstanding rating. No redeeming qualities at all and I am sorry that I wasted my time.

5 out of 5 stars Southern Beauty & Charm.......2003-12-11

Mrs. Trobaugh is truly a gifted writer. This book is a treat of sweet memories of times gone by. Loved it & recommend it highly.

5 out of 5 stars Along for the ride.......2000-07-30

This novel is a treasure of times-gone-by Southern atmosphere. As the three central characters journeyed to their new home in Jerusalem, Georgia, down rutted dirt roadways enveloped in kudzu wines, I traveled with them through my own rural upbringing. The novel focuses on the emotional journey of Miss Amelia as she makes sense of her past and reconciles it with her future. It is a pleasure to go along for the ride, marveling at Trobaugh's rich and specific language and her considerable talent for telling a story.

5 out of 5 stars A thoughtful and engaging book.......2000-07-27

Praise Jerusalem was a marvelous book. The three main characters are believable and captured my interest from the start. The story was surprisingly suspenseful for such a gentle, thoughtful book. Trobaugh's writing is simple and elegant, and she deals with serious themes deftly. And she has a great gift for humor. I enjoyed this book greatly, and would rank among the best books I've read in the past few years.

1 out of 5 stars Not worth the paper it was printed on.......2005-08-27

This play was written as an entry into the Scene Award Series, which highlights up and coming playwrights. This play was more like out and going. The writing leaves something to be desired in it's wording and characters. The author tells you up front he has mangled the history surrounding the story. he wasn't kidding.

The characters with the exceptions of Baldwin and Saladin resemble a bad teen movie. We have Agnes: Baldwin's mother who is a scheming murderous Lady Macbeth type. Heracliis: a member of the court who is often drunk and an ex-lover on Agnes. Humphry: the King's first minister and teacher. Sybylla an idiot valley girl and spends most of the time whining. Guy de Courtney: new husband of Sybylla who basically thinks only of sex and is an idiot. And Raymond: who comes in at the end as the next king. And yes that is how the author wrote the names I kid you not.

The only thing worth reading was the scene between Saladin and Baldwin, which, while written crudely gets the respect of the characters to each other across.

If you simply must read this play then borrow it from somewhere, it's not worth buying.

The Merlin of the Oak Wood is the sequel to The Merlin of St. Gilles' Well and book two of the Joan of Arc Tapestries, a series that seeks to be to the Maid of Orleans what Mary Stewart's classic Merlin novels are to King Arthur. Ann Chamberlin's entertaining Joan of Arc novels may be read with equal validity as high fantasy, historical fantasy, or secret history. Pagan readers will enjoy the series, but devout Christians may be disturbed by the way it explicitly connects the saint to Celtic paganism.

Opening in the Year of Grace 1425, The Merlin of the Oak Wood follows Jehannette d'Arc through childhood and young womanhood to her acceptance of the mysterious voices that summon her to fight for beleaguered France. The novel also continues the stories of the two main characters of the previous book: Jean Le Drapier, now the powerful Merlin of St. Gilles' Well, and Gilles de Rais, the valiant and troubled French nobleman who fights the English invaders, and who will one day become the murderous Bluebeard. The second book in a series, The Merlin of the Oak Wood is obviously a bridging work, with the inevitable lack of a definitive conclusion, but it ably continues the story of Jeanne d'Arc and her allies-to-be.

A two-time winner of Affaire de Coeur's Best Foreign Historical Award, Ann Chamberlin has also written Sofia, The Sultan's Daughter (winner of the 1998 Critic's Choice Award for Overall Historical), The Reign of the Favored Women, Tamar, and Leaving Eden. --Cynthia Ward

1 out of 5 stars The Merlin of the Oak Wood.......2006-05-15

The sole basis for this book's theme, Margaret Murray's theories of a pagan "witch cult" to which numerous historical figures were claimed to belong, is thoroughly discredited and rejected by both historians and most modern pagans alike. Historians have long pointed out that Joan of Arc did not belong to such a cult, and the events in this book likewise bear little resemblance to history.
In terms of writing style and ambience, this is largely standard fantasy, albeit with prose which is somewhat more over-the-top than the norm.

3 out of 5 stars Not just fiction but an Anti-Reality History for mature readers.......2005-08-25

Historical rights are wrong, left is right, the Church is immoral, and evil is virtuous as long as the goal is OK.

This story, and I must assume the author herself, gives the feeling of a poetic but unfortunately lost soul seeking desperately to overturn anything accepted as "true" or "good" in order to induce a reaction while telling her imagined enlightened version of a period of historical transformation.

The story does successfully recreate the feeling of chaos and mystery that must have surrounded rural life in the middle ages during time of conflict and political upheaval, and throws some intriguing glimpses into the superstitions of the period.

The author has an effective eye for injecting realistic as well as romantic detail and description into each scene, and drops historical colloquialisms as though she uses medieval terms in everyday conversation. Very well.

This story isn't, however, about Merlin, nor is the majority of this entry in the series even about Joan of Arc (still 'Jehannette' here), but rather about the rewriting of history toward a pathetic anti-Christian worldview provided through the eyes of the violent and homosexual anti-hero Gilles. She gives him some severely sympathetic treatment, attempting to draw the reader into identifying with this pagan worldview as well. It is his character that provides the predictable sniping at how weak and immoral all of the self-righteous stick-figure characters - who are held up as representatives of historical Christians - supposedly are. Hopefully the author really isn't on a one-woman anti-Crusade against the historically positive influence of any Christian character, any Alpha Male, or even the power of true (traditional) femininity, in the guise of white-washing Celtic-style pagan magik.

The sexual overtones and mature-reader-only twisting of gender roles do include a spooky narrative of our female future heroine (Joan) - who grew up as a tomboy able to beat up the surrounding males, of course (french feminism 101, anyone?) - in a memorable scene describing her first clothing of herself in a man's armor. Unfortunately, Gilles development as a young warrior is also well detailed as his sexuality is perverted toward homosexual experience through childhood molestation by the uncle he idolized. Too much of the otherwise creative historical fiction is spent in scenes describing the development of this twisted lust and the vivid emotional depiction of his depravity. This baser undercurrent throughout the story surely removes this book from any reading lists appropriate to younger readers (I would place it at collegiate).

The author is creative and talented, but appears to actually buy into the extreme modern (certainly not classical) liberal side of historical fiction rewriters. Of course, if you're pro-Wiccan, pagan, or a fan of alternative occultic world views - that run not magically parallel to, but counter to the truth - you'll find a satisfying fantasy past in the imagination of Ann Chamberlin.

If you're in Germany any time soon, you may also find the follow-up story "Der Erbe des Ermiten" in the bargain bin at the airport, though I'll have to read the entire thing before I critique it here. Suffice it to say we can expect Gilles to develop into a real monster, and Joan won't be portrayed as a saintly Christian heroine fighting for freedom, but a 'virtuous' little witch sensitive to and following the advice of spirit guide Voices...which others would generally refer to mildly as 'fallen angels.' We'll see...

5 out of 5 stars Myth and magic.......2005-02-10

Mysterious. Fanciful. Intriguing. In this sequel to The Merlin of St Gilles' Well, Jehanne d'Arc, La Pucelle, plays more of a central role as she prepares to set foot upon the world's stage in a role few females have played before. Chamberlin's Joan is a young girl caught up in something so immense that she can't comprehend its beginning, its end, or its meaning. Her faith, part Christian, part "old religion", leads her to follow her Voices no matter what the cost. This is a real Joan, a 16-year-old with all the coming of age conflicts of any other young woman, compounded by her mission. No wooden icon here. If you read The Merlin of the Oak Wood with an open mind, it can be a total immersion experience, fun and thought-provoking at the same time. Can't wait for the sequel.

                  5 out of 5 stars I couldn't put it down!.......2001-08-07

,,,I think this book is a brilliant piece of fiction, an intelligent fantasy about the pagan culture of medieval Europe. When you start reading it you just get lost in it, you feel like you're really there. I think it's as close as we'll ever get to experiencing pagan life in the Middle Ages. I've read other Ann Chamberlin books and I think she's really a fine writer; I know that The Merlin of St. Gilles' Well was named "One of the Ten Best Fantasy and SF Novels of the Year" by Booklist. If you like really good historical novels and/or fantasy novels, fine prose, and a compelling story, you'll love this. Happy reading!

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic reading expeience.......2001-05-13

In 1425 France, soldiers' blood continues to flows as decades of war divides the country. England and Burgundy occupy land that rightfully belongs to the French. Soldier-witch Gilles de Raes and his milk brother witch Yann know that the nation will continue to be a river of blood before Merlin's prophecy will save the earth in the guise of a maid from the Bois-Chenau.

In Domenry, Jehannette D'Arc wears the red kirtlee that signifies she is not available for courting. She hears voices in her head that she believes is God telling her what he wants her to do. Unlike most females, Jehannette can ride a horse and fight as good as any male. To many she is the incarnation of Merlin's prophecy and they are ready to follow her into hell once she gives the signal.

Ann Chamberlin writes a powerful mix of mysticism and fact to create the exhaling THE MERLIN OF THE OAK WOODS, setting the stage for Joan of Arc's endeavor to drive invaders from French soil. The juxtaposition of battle scenes with a child growing into a warrior-woman is believable and quite colorful. The only drawback to this powerful historical novel is that readers will need to wait one year for book two.

Brought together by a common need to care for Alexander, Worf's troubled, motherless son, however, Deanna Troi and Worf discover hidden reserves of courage and compassion within each other. Soon mutual respect leads to stronger emotions as they embark on an unexpected courtship and over-the-top adventure.

3 out of 5 stars Good. Amusing. Interesting. But not great........2004-04-27

I've always been a big fan of Peter David's writing, and I seem to recall saying of the first "Imzadi" novel something along the lines of, "In spite of the fact that I've never been that fond of these characters, the novel was wonderful; Peter David could make a recipe for tapioca interesting."

I can't say that about this novel.

I'm not entirely sure why; the style is unmistakably Peter David's usual style, which I've always maintained was the optimal style for a Star Trek novel: plenty of action, plenty of drama, but still managing to inject more than a bit of wry humor into the story. His style is reminiscent of some of the best episodes from the original series: "Trouble With Tribbles", "A Piece of the Action", "Shore Leave", "I, Mudd". This story fits that mold perfectly. Yet somehow, it just didn't connect.

There are two possibilities as to "why": either there are some stories that just don't lend themselves to this style, that need to be told straight, without the sly and ironic bits of humor (can you see the third movie, "Search For Spock", being told in this style? I can't) or else his style simply gets tiresome if one is overexposed to it, and needs to be rationed. After all, the above-mentioned episodes were fun, but the series really wouldn't have been as good if ALL of the episodes were in that style. Perhaps I've just been reading too much of Mr. David's work, and need to cut back for a while.

I don't think so, though. I'm inclined to believe the first explanation. There are some stories that simply do not lend themselves to humor. This was one of them.

                        4 out of 5 stars A very good read........2003-04-13

I for one enjoyed the book. A fascinating read. Although it is not as good as the first one but a definite purchase. I really like how Peter David explored the relationship between Worf and Deanna Troi. Something that wasn't truly explained in the TV series.

The reason I gave it four stars (and it might be me just nit picking). There was reference to money or purchases of things on Earth. If anyone can correct me on this be my guest. But in the ST universe I had thought money and finances on earth was no more. I had thought people on earth gave up money for the pursuit of higher knowledge and to better man kind. There was no need for money because everything was plentiful on earth and that no one ever starved and had shelter for all.

But that point is minor. It's a fantastic read with twist and turns. I for one could not put it down. I especially liked the last chapter about Worf in an emotional side I have never thought was capable (for a Klingon).

I hate to admit it but it left me kind of choked up for the guy.

That alone was worth getting this book. So pick it up.

2 out of 5 stars The first Imzadi was by far better.......2003-01-07

I read Imzadi in one day, loving every bit of it. It was by far the best ST:TNG book I've read. And while Imzadi II captures the characters perfectly to their TV series portrayals.. the plot is disapointing, and the ending even more so. I found myself saying "What the heck?" and "You gotta be kidding me" at the ending. It was ridiculous and made Riker and Troi seem impulsive, indecisive, immature, selfish, when their relationship aboard the Enterprise (during the TV series) was much more secure and understood between them both than in this book. The ONLY part of the book I found thoughtful of the author was the part about Picard trying to get Will's "twin" back on the moral track by using a Dicken's book (which was actually a shape shifter..bad plot there). So 2 stars for the effort of trying to follow an amzing book, I would still read an Imzadi III in hopes it would live up to the first Imzadi.

                        5 out of 5 stars ST-TNG: Triangle, Imzadi II.......2002-12-04

Star Trek-The Next Generation: Triangle, Imzadi II written by Peter David is a book devoted to the love triangle between Deanna Troi, William Riker and Worf.

The book starts out with Worf holding his love and wife Jadzia Dax and bellowing into the heavens for her arrival. This book is one of the better Star Trek books in that, the author, Peter David does a really good job of character development and fills in a lot of loose threads, making the fabric of this book richly appointed.

This book has three major characters and the interwoven plot that takes all three on an action-packed adventure, but also, an exploration into their relationship between themselves. As you know, the term Imzadi to the planet of Betazed means beloved and denotes a special affection, a closeness, a compassion that is only felt between two.

As with all good stories, a love triangle can be fatal for one of the parties involved, but this isn't an Earth love triangle... it's far greater than just that. This love triangle is between Wolf a part Klingon/Human, Riker all human and Deanna Troi Betazed/Human.

There are good storylines and the relationship between these three can get a little strained, but all in all, quite civil. Nevertheless, the narrative flows with relatively no incumberments. Fast paced and never lost for words, the author, makes this story come alive as you get genuine feeling for the characters.

The resolution of this love triangle works out, but that is all I'm going to tell you about, the whole relationship and how it affects the characters... otherwise I'd reveal too much and it would not be a good read for you.

Peter David caputures the character's personality and it is true to form with the Star Trek genre.

4 out of 5 stars I was a little disapointed, but not too much.......2002-10-05

There is a lot of action, suspense, and some seriously complicated relationships are explained in-depth. I enjoyed it, but not as much as the first book. Several charachters are brought in that were not in the last book, even Thomas Riker(if you remember that transported accident in which Riker was duplicated) which adds quite an interresting plot. There were still a few questions which I don't think were answered well enough but the book contains betrayal, romulans....and I thought of writing more but don't want to ruin the reading experience of discovering it for yourself.

This Audiofy audiobook chip packs Robert O'Reily's full four hour reading of "Triangle: Imzadi II" on a tiny memory card. A single Audiofy audiobook chip, hardly larger than a stamp, holds a complete digital audiobook, and saves the last listening position automatically, unlike CDs. With an SD memory card slot or low-cost adapter - like those for digital cameras - this Audiofy audiobook chip can be played on Microsoft Windows and Apple Macintosh desktop computers or laptops (Microsoft Windows XP/2000/Me/98, or Apple Mac OS X 10.3.9 and above) or transferred to Apple iPod media players. Audiobook chips also move seamlessly to most Palm OS and Pocket PC handheld PDAs with SD expansion slots, as well as Treo and Windows Mobile "smartphones" (Palm OS 5.2 or Windows Mobile 2002 and above)... Imzadi: to the people of the planet Betazed, including Counselor Deanna Troi of the Starship Enterprise, it means "beloved" and denotes a special closeness that can never be truly broken. Or can it? Once William Riker was Deanna's imzadi, but now the ship's counselor has embarked on an unlikely romance with Lieutenant Commander Worf. At first glance, they cannot be more different, but over time they have discovered hidden reserves of courage and compassion within each other. Yet does Worf's future truly lie with Deanna, and whom shall Troi ultimately call "imzadi"? Even in the 24th century, three Is definitely a crowd!

This book is light reading and lacks knowledge sharing of glycemic foods. I was not looking for a Dr.'s book on food and recipes but this book was not fullfilling for me. It encourages the use of the 'bad' fats. It does encourage low glycemic foods and low sugar foods. What I am trying to share is that I bought two books at the same time, the other by "GALLOP" - Living the G.I. Diet, and found this one to be greatly lacking by comparison.

My husband started on SugarBusters almost a year ago, after my boss lost 50 lbs on it. We bought the SugarBusters book and also the cookbook. Never used any of the recipes in either. Instead, I was cooking only a meat and several veggies for each meal, and we were getting a little burned out. THEN, we found this in a bookstore! Everything we've tried has been terrific, not to mention easy. Hubby has lost 55lbs, thanks to SugarBusters and regular exercise. We're eating better tasting food than we ever have, and it is healthy, to boot! The shopping guide is extremely helpful and more comprehensive than the one put out by SugarBusters. I have since given at least 5 copies of this as gifts, along with Sugar Bust for Life Part II.

If you're looking for a guide for healthier eating and cooking, this is for you. Not only are the recipes easy and tasty, but the guidelines are informative and easy to follow. The pounds will shed without feeling hungry. The first 2 weeks were the most difficult as I cut down on all the sugar. I have more energy and it feels great to lose weight without sacrificing great tasting food!

If you have decided to life the Sugar Busters! lifestyle, Sugar Bust for Life! with the Brennans is a must. Both cookbooks, Part 1 and Part 2 make following this diet much easier. With so many delicious recipes to choose from, you won't get bored. All of the recipes call for common ingredients that most people will already have in their pantry, or will be very easy to find in your local grocery store. Part 2 is my favorite of the two cookbooks, though I am glad I have both.

My only complaint about the 2 cookbooks is that the authors did not include nutrition information. It would be nice to know how many calories, carbs, sugar grams, fat, and protein grams are in each serving.

Sugar Busters will be a way of life for my family from now on. Within 6 weeks of starting the "diet" my husband lost 15 pounds (really without trying too hard). He was never hungry. More importantly than the weight loss his cholesterol dropped from 281 to 202; his triglycerides dropped from a scary 1164 to 230; and his glucose dropped from 142 to 106. All within 6 weeks, and NO medication!! We hope that given a few more months, and some exercise he can get his numbers even lower.

5 out of 5 stars PART II OF THE PERFECT COOKBOOK.......2003-02-02

I couldn't have been happier with the "original" Sugar Bust For Life!...With The Brennans. The minute I realized that a Part II had been published, I had to own it! These simple recipes are so delicious that when my husband and I sit down to eat dinner, we oftentimes forget we're on a diet. That is really why these books have become part of our lives. I especially recommend Part I and Part II to anyone who maintains a low-carbohydrate regime - but truly - to anyone who enjoys cooking and eating fabulous food!

I have been following the suggestions and recipes in Sugar Bust for Life! ... with the Brennans ... with amazing, satisfying results. When I started this review, I noticed the Trussville, AL review. No where in Part II do I find a recipe for the Double Chocolate Brownie Supreme, so I went back to Part I and found the recipe there. I decided to try it again before continuing my review and it was delicious. Whatever that reader found lacking obviously has been corrected in the book. I wonder if the reviewer tried to contact the Brennans. I regret that the Trussville review may deter others from beginning a very healthy and satisfying eating lifestyle. I have found only helpful information and great recipes in both of the books, Part I and Part II. I have recently purchased Play Your Carbs Right! ... with The Brennans. This book also is a great help because it keeps me in line with carbohydrates, serving size, and includes even more simple, satisfying and delicious recipes! Thank you, Brennans

I purchased the Sugar Bust for Life Cookbook and Companion Guide. When I attempted to try my first recipe (Double Chocolate Brownie Supreme - page 288) I discovered it filled with errors and omissions. Salt called for in directions was not mentioned in ingredient list. Cream Cheese and extracts listed in ingredients were not listed in directions. No cooking time was given. How can I have confidence in a cookbook when the first recipe I wanted to use is incorrect? In the front of the book it says that "Sir Speedy" did the typing for the book. Apparently he did it a little too speedily. I would be interested to know if there is a corrected issue available - that I don't have to purchase. It should be made available free of charge.
