4 out of 5 stars Odd-ball Erudite Grab-bag.......2004-02-03

Imagine a Victorian Robert Graves who, akin to the method used in Goodbye to All of That, decided to write an eccentric autobiography stuffed to the brim with crumbling family manses, ghosts, family eccentrics (the biggest being the author) and upper-crust cocktail chatter--that's Hare. He's the seedy gentleman bachelor who is definitely from the same cast as Oscar Wilde (minus the wife and two children). Apparently, Hare was originally known for his travel writings but now all that's left of him is just this one (extremely entertaining) autobiography. If one enjoyed the structure of Goodbye to All of That, this book will definitely be a treat.

Book Description

The life of the young Lewis was filled with contemplations quite different from those of the mature author. This early diary gives readers a window on the world of his formative years. Edited and with an Introduction by Walter Hooper; Index; photographs.

4 out of 5 stars C. S. LEWIS.......2000-07-27

A book with such a dry-sounding title will necessarily cause the prospective reader, even the fans of CSL, to wonder whether it is worth its price and the effort of reading it. To answer that question, I would say that the book is of real value to both the diehard Lewisophile, and the researcher of well-known characters from that period of Oxford such as John Betjeman.

The period covered is from the time of his study for the second of his three degree subjects, to the second year of his English Fellowship at Magdalen. On eventually being offered a position, he was asked would he mind teaching some philosophy as well as English. In a letter to his father, he records that by that time he would have `agreed to coach a troupe of performing bagbirds in the quadrangle'.

His main motive for keeping the diary was that the entries were read aloud to his companion Mrs Moore, who kept house for him. If he allowed the diary to lapse, she would prompt him to start again. This is all to the good in terms of a candid insight into his life, as publication would be the last thing he would have expected. The published text is well edited, and generally gets the flavour of his domestic and college life. The general range and depth of his intellectual life is captured particularly well, with Shakespeare, Sigmund Freud, Havelock Ellis, and a variety of philosophical savants (now mostly forgotten) being the daily diet.

There are some surprises in the text. I was surprised at the extremely social nature of his life at this time. Far from a life of solitary study, the steady stream of houseguests, companionable walks, and visits to the theatre or musical performances form a large part of the normal routine. Without doubt the most horrifying section is his account of their attempt to help `The Doc', who goes mad shortly before his death. This reminded me of the later Lewis who was to write `A Grief Observed' - an account of his wife dying, and his coming to terms with it - a rare blend of compassion and self-analysis. At the end of the book is a fascinating but rather uncompromising set of nine pen-portraits of his Magdalen colleagues. These are private notes, and not intended for publication, but we see how the lancet accuracy of his analysis is turned with equal facility on human nature or literary works. It explains why he could be unintentionally intimidating, and why he was not equally appreciated by all his colleagues.

4 out of 5 stars Maybe it shouldnýt be fascinating, but it is.......1999-03-28

The UK paperback edition has a shiny, lurid and embarrassing cover. Harper/Collins was clearly trying to flog this book to the religious crowd, presumably on the grounds that the author of this diary wrote, years later and among other things, religious works: a tenuous connection, one would think. Ignore the cover.

I'm not really a connoisseur of private diaries, so my words should not be taken too seriously: but I did enjoy this. It's for admirers of C.S. Lewis and graduate students. It filled me with a desire to go through the diary page by page, and read, or at least nibble on, every book Lewis mentions as having read. (If you seriously plan to do this, good luck: I recommend that you start by living next to a rich library at least a hundred years old.)

But let the buyer beware of two things ... Firstly: this is not really a private diary, since it was written to be read to a Mrs Moore, who is one of the most prominent characters in it. If you want some sort of insight into the relationship between Lewis and Moore, give up on the idea, for there is none to be had, here or anywhere else. Secondly: the diary has been edited by Walter Hooper. He claims that he only removed the dull and repetitive bits. Yes, well.

I suppose you should also be warned that the diary gives the impression that 1920s England was populated almost entirely by intelligent nitwits who blathered unintelligbly about metaphysics. Maybe this is true. It also gives the impression that everyone in 1920s England was languishing under the tyranny of idealism, which is false: G.E. Moore and Bertrand Russell, and soon almost everyone, would have none of it. But one cannot understand why Lewis came to believe what he did until one realises how strong this tyranny once was.

2 out of 5 stars C.S. Lewis's Diary of Day to Day Events from 1922 - 1927.......1998-02-03

As someone who has read nearly every Lewis title in print, my conclusion about the diary is that it is entertaining in places, is good for giving a feel for what day to day life was like for the author as he was made the transition from student to teacher, and gives fuller information about some of the characters anonymously or only briefly described in SURPRISED BY JOY and LETTERS OF C.S. LEWIS. I doubt, though, that anyone other than a Lewis enthusiast would enjoy the book. It is rather banal, certainly not on par with his later writing, and indeed rather provincial. I recommend it for Lewis scholars as reference material, but not for general reading. His brother Warren Lewis kept a far more interesting diary, posthumously published as BROTHERS AND FRIENDS.

          Book Description

The fourteen short stories collected in this volume were written between 1913 and 1921, most of them against the background of the 1914-18 War. All but one were published in slightly different versions by magazines and periodicals on both sides of the Atlantic. Ten were selected and revised by Lawrence for his collection England, My England published in 1922 in the United States and 1924 in Britain. Some of the stories included in this volume are "Tickets Please", "The Blind Man", "Monkey Nuts", "Wintry Peacock", "Hadrian", "Samson and Delilah", "The Primrose Path", "The Horse-Dealer's Daughter", and "The Last Straw". The texts aim to recover Lawrence's own intentions, which editors and publishers all too frequently ignored or altered. Where possible, manuscripts and corrected typescripts are used as base-texts. The introduction traces the composition and revision of the stories, setting them in the context of Lawrence's life and work. The textual apparatus gives variant readings, and explanatory notes identify sources, references and quotations. The 1915 version of "England, My England" is given in an appendix.

4 out of 5 stars Damn good(and creative) weird fiction.......2005-03-17

Although not entirely blown away by Cisco's first work, I am appreciative of his project as an author; combining literary traditions and siting influences including Tolkien and Lovecraft, two of the 20th-century's greatest "genre" writers, Cisco can count me among his target audience. His ultra-bizarre, seductive, psychedelic and trance-inducing prose lends a certain conviction to his otherworldly backdrop and story. Most of the action and story elements occur between the lines, and what the reader's imagination creates from these suggestions is the magic and power that make this work remarkable. Recommended for all those who constantly wonder, "How real is the 'real world'?"

4 out of 5 stars Unlike anything you've read before.......2004-06-06

What Michael Cisco did with The Divinity Student is he created a name for himself in the dark fantasy realm. This novel chronicles the journey of a man who is simply known as The Divinity Student. In the first few chapters of the book, you can already tell that this is going to be an interesting read. The Divinity Student is made up of book pages instead of body parts. His job is a word finder. He begins working in the city of San Veneficio and meets a lovely cast of characters (a mystical clown, something that reminds me of a chesire cat called an "oro" and many others). He soon realizes his task is to disinter the 12 bodies of the greatest word finders. He must look into their memories and write down every word they knew.

Stunning, surreal, undefiable--Michael Cisco has written an amazing piece of literary work here. Fans of Thomas Ligotti and Simon Logan should definitely check this out!

5 out of 5 stars Insanely good dark fantasy.......2003-10-13

Wow. I was genuinely blown away by this little novel. I have heard Cisco compared to Ligotti (there is even a Ligotti blurb on the back), but his work is entirely unique, a bizarre marriage of disturbing surrealism and dark fantasy rendered in a highly original prose style. The book is worth reading for the prose alone, which replicates the effects of a dream, at times blurry and indiscriminate and sharpening to crystalline detail at other moments. The imagery is some of the most simultaeneously beautiful and nightmarish that I have ever experienced save in the work of Kafka, Schulz or Ligotti. The plot moves with a raw, pulsating power, and the book induces bizarrre emotions in the reader which have their only corollary in dreams (or nightmares). The last chapter is one of the most bleak and moving pieces of prose that I have encountered in weird fiction. Simply put, if you are a lover of surrealism or dark fantasy, YOU NEED TO READ THIS BOOK.
NOTE: This book is being reprinted in The San Veneficio Canon, to be published by Night Shade Press. The San Veneficio Canon will also include the sequel to The Divinity student.

            4 out of 5 stars A perfect construction of a dream........2003-05-10

There is a short author's note at the end of "The Divinity Student" where Michael Cisco describes his notion that the act of reading induces a trance-like state, and how his ambition was to produce a work that made one feel as if the words were being dreamt rather than read.

            He succeeded. Brilliantly.

This work stands as a bizarre exploration of the surreal and macabre. The story, set in a time and place which are indeterminate, revolves around a divinity student who has been reanimated from death. He is given a mission to move to an old city and take up work as a "wordfinder". That is to say, one who finds and records words which exist but are not official components of language. They are unconsciously written and spoken but never recognized or defined. This develops into a deeper quest to recover the contents of the Book of Words, which had contained the diction of a powerful, pure, and divine language but has since been destroyed. To do this, he must employ strange, mystical techniques on the decomposing corpses of the book's original compilers and thus retrieve this knowledge. As more information is acquired, the divinity student drifts farther and farther from our world into supernaturalism, black magic, and ghoulish power.

The narrative proceeds with an entirely unique cadence as there is a disquietingly smooth flow from one bizarre event to another. The pace and candor, which are sleepy and strangely matter-of-fact, sharply contrast the content, which is immensely dark and bloated with odd, frightening events and with starkly hallucinatory sequences. The reader feels as if they are drifting effortlessly and naturally from one deranged moment to the next, much as they would in a dream. Imagine a lake with a floor made from a giant kaleidoscope that is backlit with powerful lamps and has a black octopus living in the center; or perhaps a priest with eyes painted over his closed eyelids who can induce visions by blowing formaldehyde onto your face.

The details are blurry and vague at best, and much of the plot must extrapolated from the weird collection of information presented. The characters are strange and mostly two dimensional, but this level of depiction, I believe, is necessary to support the foggy, half-real atmosphere of the writing. The prose is, at times, absolutely gorgeous.

I do not recommend this book to anyone interested in a gripping narrative full of strong, memorable characters. I do not recommend this book to anyone who seeks explanation and closure from a story. I do not recommend this book to anyone with a weak stomach.

I do recommend this to someone who is willing to experiment with this odd form of escapism and experience the unique sensation of dreaming through the pages. The images that Cisco evokes are bizarre, but also fascinating in their frightening and psychedelic un-wordliness.

And then, at some point, the book ends and you simply wake up.

4 out of 5 stars Verbal lyricism on a grand scale.......2001-08-11

If Michael Cisco's _The Divinity Student_ is remembered for one thing it will be for the magnificent way that Cisco strings his words together. As a previous reviewer has already noted, this book is a feast for devotees of the written word.

I cannot claim to have fully understood every page of this novel. It is not an easy read. It forces you to read each and every paragraph carefully and even then you need to apply yourself to understand the words on the page.

The Divinity Student is thrown out of the seminary after he is apparently struck dead by lightning. He is brought back to life by a mysterious group of people who gut his corpse and stuff him full of pages from a mysterious book. He is put to work as a word-finder. He soon learns that there is a book full of lost and possibly forbidden words; 'the Catalog'. He is approached by a representative of an underground organization who tells him that he, The Divinity Student, has been chosen to do something or other with the Catalog.

The Divinity Student soon finds that the Catalog has been destroyed. He learns of 12 deceased word-finders who were the authors of the Catalog. He, along with his butcher, finds the corpses, drains them of their essence and begins recreating the Catalog.

_The Divinity Student_ is a dense story, but it is very, very fascinating. Cisco changes scenes often which makes it difficult to follow the story. His writing style is gorgeous. It makes this story worth reading for the subtle nuances of the English language alone. As I said, I did not fully understand this story. I suspect it will benefit from a re-reading or two. I do not understand the significance of the cats in the street. I am perplexed by the apparently sentient cars. Many passages in the book are made up of dream sequences, which makes it difficult to determine what is real and what is not.

I would love to read a definitive description of this book, to know what it's all about. Until I find one, I will remember this book as a masterpiece of literary wordplay. Most of this book appears to be written in the present tense, which is strikingly different from the norm. I look forward to finding more of Michael Cisco's writings. Check this book out. It's different. It's neat. It's good. Recommended.

The Doctor and Student or Dialogues Between a Doctor of Divinity and a Student in the Laws of England Containing the Grounds of Those Laws Together with Questions and Cases Concerning the Equity Thereof Revised and Corrected by William Muchall, Gent. to which are added two pieces concerning Suits in Chancery by Subpoena. Written originally in Latin in 1523, this work contains two dialogues between a doctor of divinity and a student of English law, and is known for putting into popular form canonist learning regarding the nature and object of law, the religious and moral standards of law, the foundations of the common law and other discussions regarding the jurisdiction of Parliament. 3 out of 5 stars Astounding indeed.......2006-06-29

I remember walking into a science fiction book store while visiting New York City in 1984. A crowd had gathered around an older gentleman who wore a silver flight jacket. At first I thought it was only a local geek smoffing off, but when he turned around, I saw that he was none other than Arthur C. Clarke, there to promote the release of 2010. I was reminded of this incident when reading Astounding Days, Clake's memoirs of his long love affair with the premier American SF magazine of the 1930s and 1940s. It is written in a very conversational style with the author tossing off asides in every direction with no sense of writing discipline, much like he surely did that day long ago. Clarke was fortunate to have come of age just as Astounding was making its debut. Many of its stories would go on to become classics. He makes special mention of the 1934 issues. Then, the reader was treated to the serialization in succeeding issues of Jack Williamson's The Legion of Space, "Doc" Smith's Skylark of Valeron, and John W. Campbell's The Mightiest Machine. I remember being similarly blown away when I happened to open up the bound volume of that year's issues while browsing through the stacks at the University of Illinois Library. Clarke reminiscences on many of the writers and stories published in Astounding that made an impression on him during those years including H.P. Lovecaft, Stanley Weinbaum, Ray Cummings, Robert Heinlein, A.E. VanVogt--as well as many lesser known works that have not stood the test of time. One interesting tidbit is his aside that Astounding magazines typically reached Britain in those days as ballast on freighters. Interspersed with this discussion of the stories are his memoirs of growing up as a young fan in prewar England and involvement in such SF groups as the British Interplanetary Society.

Perhaps it is inaccurate to call this an autobiography. A good portion of it (particularly the first part of the book) is Arthur critiquing the early issues of Astounding Science Fiction magazine. Later, he tells quite a bit about his own life, but mostly this is a memoir of his experiences with Astouding. It is interesting for several reasons: first, we learn what Clarke thinks of a great many of his colleagues (including heavies like Asimov and Heinlein, both friends of Arthur's). But what makes the book really interesting for the hard-core ACC reader is later in the book where he tells a lot about his own life. We learn of his experiences at college, as a civil servant, and his time in the military. We also get a lot of his views and ideas on many things relating to science, as well as a good deal he says about his own subsequent books, the ideas behind them, and how the writing of other authors influenced him. And of course the book is all written in Clarke's trademark witty style.

This will all seem very boring for the casual Clarke reader, or for those who only know him as "that guy who did 2001". But for those true fans who recognize Arthur for what he is, a brilliant, creative, and witty writer who is unquestionably one of the literary greats of the 20th century, and possibly the greatest science fiction writer of all-time. The only thing about this book that disappoints me is that ACC elaborates so little on his own works for Astounding. I figured that would be the main point of the book, but it isn't; although he mentions many times his works, they are rarely the ones found in Astounding. Still, this is a worthwhile and book for the Clarke devotee; casual fans should look elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars Don't mean to sound snobby, but this isn't for amateurs :-/.......2007-05-07

If you want to know everything in full, detailed explanations with pictures and such, but you're past Martha Stewart, Rachael Ray and --god forbid-- Sandra Lee, then get the Joy of Cooking, or the Larousse Gastronomique.

If you think of this as more of a chef's pocket dictionary, you'll better understand what this book's intent and purpose is.

4 out of 5 stars A must have for Chef's.......2007-02-23

I am a Chef specializing in French cooking and this book is a "must have". I could only give it 4 stars as it is not available in paperback that I could keep in my back pocket while in the kitchen.

                                            5 out of 5 stars Indespensible.......2006-11-25

This book was recommened to me by one of the other Chefs that I work with. It has been increasingly important to me when I don't wish to pull out Escoffier and need a quick reference or just a notion or tickle of what goes into a dish. If you are a home cook I don't recommend this book as it is beyond the scope of most home cooks to understand but if you are a professional and don't yet own a copy I suggest that you treat yourself to this delightful work. the grouping can be hard to get used to but once you are past that you are home free. Enjoy!

                                            5 out of 5 stars A precious tool.......2006-10-12

I've owned this book since day one of my apprenticeship, twenty eight years ago and still use it to this day... I have the french version but gave my Friend the English version. This book was written almost a century ago and still is used by many chefs and serious cooks....

                                            1 out of 5 stars Very misleading.......2006-03-05

Not sure who this book was intended for. It is basically a dictionary of sorts, trying to define all sorts of food types and methods. Two problems come up quickly. First the definitions are very terse and of little use. Explaining stock as bones and vegetables cooked together, does little to help the reader gain understanding, and that is one of the better definitions! Secondly, many of the terms are outdated or missing. I realize how long ago Escoffier lived, but the references to items that changed their names a hundred years ago, makes finding anything very difficult, and usually completely unrewarding.
