Octavia the octopus and her ocean dwelling friends have a favorite game they play about how to protect themselves from enemies. Each of Octavia's friends has a special trick that they perform perfectly every time.
The seahorse hangs onto seaweed and enemies can't see it. The turtle hides in grass. Octavia boasts that she can shoot purple ink, but every time she tries to prove it to her friends, something goes wrong and she ends up with a different color.
Then the real test comes--a shark is tracking Octavia. Will she be able to shoot purple ink when she needs to?
Octavia and Her Purple Ink Cloud is a wonderful book for children ages 4 to 8. It not only teaches different colors, but it also gives facts about how different ocean creatures protect themselves from predators. Both my two- and five-year-olds enjoyed the colorful pictures, and the older one was totally engrossed in the story. My preteen daughter enjoyed the additional facts about octopuses at the end of the book.

Octavia And Her Purple Ink Cloud.......2006-09-20
This is a charming story about Octavia Octopus and her friends who live in a small, secret cave in a colorful coral reef. They often pass the time practicing "how to hide from a hungry creature."
Her friend Porcupine fish is able to puff up and turn himself into a big prickly ball. Octavia tells him she is able to squirt purple ink as a means of escape. She squirts a cloud to demonstrate this ability, but to her dismay it is yellow.
Sandy Seahorse amuses Octavia when he shows her how he can wrap his tail around part of a plant. He sways with the plant leaves and becomes almost invisible. Again trying to squirt her purple ink, it squirts out orange, she sighs and says, "I guess I'd better practice."
Freddy Flounder changes color and hides on the ocean floor. He has very strange, funny eyes and is able to see in many different directions. Again Octavia unsuccessfully tries to squirt purple ink but it squirts out green.
Greta Sea Turtle, Carolyn Clown Fish, and Polly Parrotfish all demonstrate their survival tactics. Octavia continues to practice to squirt purple ink but consequently she quirts red and blue. After much practice Octavia is finally successful squirting her allusive purple ink just as a very big, very hungry shark approaches. She and her friends are able to hide from the hungry shark and he swims away with an empty belly.
Children as well as parents will learn interesting facts about the unique octopus in the section "Octopus Fun Facts" in the back of the book.

Another gem. The book asks the reader to "find" a variety of animals who are hidden in their habitats. The descriptive language is definately a vocabulary builder. The book is truly delightful.

It's rather hard to summarize the content of this collection as a whole, since most stories are written from the perspectives of character very different from one another (i.e. social background, personality, or simply the circumstance one's situated in). Readers who look for variety in content and themes would enjoy as they go along and explore - be ready to be unsettled. I personally prefer the portrayals of seemingly insignificant individuals - the slides of a life and the vision of the world - quite subtly done, in an almost absurd but triumphant manner. Each of the story also has a fairly different form, which makes this collection a good example for students of creative writing. The writing itself, needless to say, is precise and sometimes poetic. A good choice for those who look for surprises in short fiction.

Charmingly illustrated story in rhyme........1998-02-16
The story is pleasant to read aloud, and the rhyme makes it easy to memorize. It describes an adventurous chameleon who changes his colors to match everything from a strawberry milkshake to a zebra.
The pictures are adorable. My favorite is the one where the chameleon has blended to match a redwood tree-- he has turned bark-colored, is swinging by his tail, and is holding leaves in his mouth and all four feet. It is really cute!

Not up to standards.......2006-01-16
I found myself dissappointed in this Guardians of the Flame novel. With the Heir Apparent and The Warrior lives I was drawn back in hard, but this novel really let me down.
Point of view in the story has shifted to Walter Slovotsky, and he is a character that I have a hard time identifying with. He is arrogant, rude and insensitive. He cheats on his wife constantly, uses women like 'shake-n-bake' bags and has the gall to be hurt when she is unfaithful to him.
The pace limps along for much of the book. Had Mr. Rosenburg spent as much time on plot as he did trying to impress us with his culinary knowledge it would have made for a much more interesting read. As it was everytime Walter began to eat I started skipping pages.
Later installments in the series are better, but he would be better served by moving Jason back into the limelight. The Cullinane family makes for better characters.
Worst book from this author. I expected better.......2002-01-13
the first 3/4 of the book i could do without. 3/4 of cairator development in the 6th book and very little plot development or action is a grate way to bore a reader. after the first Walter dream segment skip the rest, that never goes any were.
How many ways a character can sit "tailor-fashion"..........2000-04-16
This series is great! The concept was creative ad well entertaining. Joel Rosenburg delightfully colors his characters with strengths and weaknesses, making them very easily to relate with.
Yet there is one major flaw I see in Mr. Rosenburg's writing of this series. EVERYONE has to sit "tailor-fashion".... Do you know how OLD this has become after re-reading this series straight through? Walter Slovotsky sits tailor-fashion on the boat, Tennetty sat tailor-fashion while sharpening her blades, even Ahira gets to sit tailor-fashion! WHAT'S UP THE TAILOR-FASHION SEATING ARRANGMENTS? This descriptions is laced through all the books like wormwood in how much it is used. It begins to detract the reader from the excellent story that is written here.
The only negative critique I have for Mr. Rosenburg is that he needs to write his characters as sitting in some other way than "tailor-fashion". He has worn holes through this term, and should not use it again.
I wonder is Ellegon gets sit tailor-fashion in The Road Home....?
Just another sequel.......2000-03-25
Rosenberg's Guardians of the Flame series is one of my favorite fantasy tales, but this one seemed to be "just another sequel". The character development and depth that I enjoyed in the first couple of books in the series didn't seem to be there.

This book is extremely well written, and exciting. A major character dies (not telling which one!) in a creepy and emotional way. I would recommend the entire set of books to any reader who is a fan of the X-Men.
Also, is it just me or does the author put a lot of the locations in the DC/Metro area? I guess he is from there!

I came into this series with this first novel. It wasn't hard to gather what happened at all with the wonderfull writing of roman. He brought you up to speed quickly and enveloped you in the book. It was very creative. I had to buy the third installment the day after I finished this one, because i had to know what happened next. There wasn't a whole lot of action, but it was enough to be percieved as a novel and not a comic book. I think that if the movie studios got a hold of this series, it would make a ton. I loved it!

This book was so cool because it showed how smart Dr. Doom really is (smarter than that cretin Reed Richards)Even in a place where no weapons can be fired Doom still makes a weapon and eliminates Roma the omniversal majestrix(The supposed protector of the omniverse) The Red Skull also one of my favorite villains defeats the highly over-rated Magneto and Prof. X and gets the Cosmic Cube! In the third one The Red Skull and Dr. Doom (my favorites) will have to fight and The Red Skull has an advantage with the Cosmic Cube, but as we've all seen Dr. Doom has a trick up his sleeve.

I've probably read all of the X-men novels out and this trilogy is looking to be as good as the mutant empire one. THe first book set up a dictatorship with Doom and this one shows how Magneto's dream could work and shows sympathy for magneto because he only fight's for his dream. I have no idea how Roman will fix this situation because of the bleak ending. This isn't as action packed as the mutant empire trilogy but the intrigue and suspense is better.

Perhaps you've forgotten what chicken tastes like. I can imagine
how you might. If you've been feasting at the rich end of the
table, your chicken has been decorated with pungent, fruity and
spicy sauces. It's been accompanied by strongly flavored
vegetables and fragrant rice or pasta and moistened with wine.
Indeed, the whole thrust of French cooking since the days of
Careme and American cooking since we discovered the kiwi fruit
has been to dazzle the diner with elaborate (or at least clever)
taste structures.
If your meals have been at the low-rent end, you've had
your share of spicy flavors and crunchy textures, often with a
lot of fat added. In some trash food operations, the fat itself
carries a flavor that's much stronger than anything to which
chicken can aspire and the drinks-colas and starchy shakes are real
taste-killers. At either end of the dining spectrum, the
flavor of the chicken itself has been lost.
The loss isn't just because of our ways of cooking.
The whole world of industrial poultry-farming conspires to
give us pretty bland meat. All it takes is a trip to a place
like Austria to be reminded that there's a lot more flavor

Every recipe I've tried in this book has been really good or outstanding. Usually, cook book recipes are hit and miss with me. These recipes are simple and tested.
One of the most useful cookbooks I've got.......2005-03-01
I was really surprised; single-ingredient cookbooks are generally really hit-or-miss, and include a lot of recipes you'll just never use. 365 Ways to Cook Chicken is an exception, with lots of useful, versatile ideas for working with poultry. Some of these recipes have become family standards; we make #121 and #147 very regularly, and we've adapted some of the sauces and spice combinations in here to other dishes as well.
I'm definitely going to be seeing if I can track down the rest of this series.

I was a BIG fan of the original book, so I looked forward to reading the recipes in this edition. To my disappointment, all it did was take the old recipes and modify the ingredients a bit. It was a waste of money in my mind.
A Repeat of 365 Ways To Cook Chicken.......1999-01-03
This book does not contain 365 MORE ways to cook chicken; it simply replaces onions with shallots, adds parsley or changes butter to oil. There are a few new recipes, but not enough to claim 365 MORE recipes. I have been very disappointed with this book.
