Book Description
Grim novel of the Civil War featuring Forrest's cavalry.
Customer Reviews:
A well-written, engaging and thoughtful novel.......2000-07-21
First published in 1937 "None Shall Look Back" represents an attempt by author Caroline Gordon to follow the fortunes of one family throughout the Civil War years. In this she has achieved her goal admirably. The story focuses on the Allard family of Kentucky and Georgia as they struggle with the consequences of war both for those who take up arms and for those left behind.
The central character of the novel is Rives Allard, a scout under General Nathan Bedford Forrest. Gordon follows Rives with skill and eloquence, she writes well of both the physical battles and the internal conflicts that Rives experiences.
Gordon writes with a passion regarding her subject matter, at times however I felt that she has the tendency to over romanticise the idyllic nature of the pre-war south. However this is a small quibble and one that does not detract from the overall power of the book. General Forrest appears throughout None Shall Look Back and as a personal preference I would have liked him to play a larger part the novels structure but again this is not a criticism of the book just a personal observation.
Ultimately None Shall Look Back is an account of what the author saw as the stand of the heroic south, both Rives and Forrest are presented as heroes of the Southern cause and the struggles against deprivation and poverty are presented in an heroic yet believable manner.
Before reading the novel I had some reservations regarding both its age and subject matter. Other accounts of Civil War written during the same period as None Shall Look back have at times been cliched and repetitive. Gordon relies on neither of those qualities with the end result being a well-written, engaging and thoughtful novel.
None Shall Look Back.......2000-05-17
Margaret Mitchell was very lucky Gone With The Wind beat this great work by Caroline Gordon into print.None Shall Look Back was a better, richer story in all respects and, in my opinion, would have made a much better movie and still would. BTW - I'm a big Gone With The Wind fan. MWY
Body & Soul.......1999-08-15
None Shall Look Back is the type of book which has "sticking power". This power will remain as a companion long after the volume has been finished. The path of the hero, so carefully and unpretentiously illuminated here, is always that of self denial, of an abandonment toward a worthy principle or cause. Sometimes it is also a path of suffering and sorrow. Body and Soul. The heroes of this book are human. That is to say they have limitations of flesh and blood, of body and soul, of time and place. And yet for all that, passion placed at the service of honor and forged in unselfishness rises transcendent, and lasting, a truly heroic and enduring fragrance which remains after all lesser things have passed away. Is this a scent your senses respond to? If so, you will be proud to have known the humans, the heroes, of None Shall Look Back.
As a postscript I would suggest saving the Preface and reading it as an Afterword. It is a very fine contemplative piece which serves far better as an after dinner enzyme than a pre-meal appetizer.

Great Spider-Man Story.......2007-09-09
This was a very entertaining read. The story was very good and the art was even better. It does a great job of putting you into the mind of Kraven. You really get both sides of the story which really makes you have to pick either Spidey's or Kraven's side. Great read.
FANTASTIC! .......2007-08-02
Great read here! If you like Spider-Man, comics, or just a good read, make sure to pick up this story. It's got action, drama, emotion...so many things on so many levels. The dialog flows, the art is beautiful, and the story has real meaning to it. Be cautioned: The story is dark. The web-spinner lacks his usual wit and humor. He doesn't have time for it...he's fighting for his life! Hardboiled, gritty, and just plain good. Highly recommended.
The best Spidey Story Ever.......2007-07-12
This story is an absolute masterpiece, the art is superb and the story, well its just fantastic. It gives the reader a very interresting villain, whom you might be temped to cheer for. This story is about honour, revenge and having a second chance (spidey after getting out of the grave changes).
Extremely recommended to EVERYONE
Truly deserves every bit of praise it's ever received.......2007-06-13
I've always been a big fan of the Spider-Man comics, so when I heard all of the adulations given toward Kraven's Last Hunt, I couldn't resist checking it out. And yes, it was well worth it. This work written by J.M. DeMatteis and drawn by Mike Zeck is what high-quality comics and graphic novels are all about: incredible character development, shocking twists and turns, wonderful art that fits the story like a glove, and loads of atmosphere.
The six-part series collected here revolve around the title character: Sergei Kravinoff, better known as the super villain Kraven the Hunter. Kraven had been originally introduced in the Marvel universe as a world-class game hunter of who ends up attempting to hunt our hero, Spider-Man, believing him to be the one challenge he has yet to overcome. However, Spider-Man's constant triumphs over the hunter lead to the Kraven portrayed here: a broken, twisted man whose fascination with defeating the wall-crawling adventurer has turned into a dark, demented obsession. Each defeat was a humiliation, tarnishing the proud aristocrat's strong sense of honor, until it all eventually culminated in utter madness. He finally hatches a plan to triumph over his foe once and for all (which I won't spoil for you here!), and thus begins this incredible story of honor and revenge, of death and life.
Possibly the best feat of this story is the psychological way in which it examines the main characters: Kraven's internal darkness and shattered sense of self; Peter Parker's vulnerability and determination to do the right thing in his battles as Spider-Man; Mary Jane's love for her husband Peter and fear for his life; and Vermin's (a minor super-villain whose presence plays a pivital role in the Kraven/Spider-Man relationship) childlike fear, savagery, and distrust of society are all depicted splendidly. The best modern-day comic book stories are those that turn their characters (heroes, villains, and supporting characters alike) into real, believable, complex human beings, whom the reader may analyze and even sympathize with. This story does so in spades.
And of course, Mike Zeck's artwork is some of the finest seen in comic-bookdom. As DeMatteis himself says in the book's intro, the story probably would have never reached the acclaim it has if it had been drawn by any other. Personally, I'm more of a storyline buff than I am concerned with art (as long as it's good). But here, I'd have to agree. And to top it all off, the collection comes in this beautiful Marvel Premiere Classic hardcover, which, aside from the story itself, also contains Zeck's original pencil works for it, as well as an introduction written by the man himself, J.M. DeMatteis, that offers a fascinating reflection on the story's conception and inspiration.
In short, Kraven's Last Hunt truly represents the best of the best. This is the sort of thing that all graphic novelists should draw inspiration from. It warrants reread over reread, because even now, I still am able to turn to it and find new interpretations and new details that I missed. If you are a big Spidey fan, or if you want to see a sample of the heights of quality comic books may reach, add this to your collection ASAP. Don't miss it.
excellent story.......2007-05-15
A classic Spider-man story no fan should be without. It's excellent. The definitive Kraven story.

Spider-Man at his darkest and his best..........2005-02-15
I have so much I want to say about "Kraven's Last Hunt". What an amazing book. Worthy of being compared to "The Dark Knight Returns" graphic novel. Spider-Man has always been a fun character. He jokes and plays around frequently while fighting and defeating his many villans. Kraven is different. Each loss was shocking and disturbing and heartfelt for him. As each loss accumulated, his mind reeled and fought taking him to the point of obsession and madness.
Kraven literally lost his mind. A proud man of honor and integrity who is continually humbled and humiliated by Spider-Man. He can't even accept the fact that Spider-Man is actually a man but some mystical unbeatable being who he calls "the spider". "No MAN could of done what you have done to Kraven", he says during one of his drug induced ritiuals.
We are taken into Kraven's disturbing world. Allowed to look into his disturbed soul and in a strange but sad way, you can sympathize with him. Even understand why he does all he does to include his very final desperate act.
Read the story from cover to cover and then read it a second time. Only, this time, read it through the mind of Kraven. Read only his captions. His thoughts alone is a remarkable story. Everyone I have suggested this to have all agreed.
Kraven was never this intricate a character in previous Spider-Man stories. I absolutely love it and I will miss him. Kraven was more than just a super villan hellbent on destruction. He was a man of pride and honor who lived and died as such.
Actual title- X-Men and Spider-Man: Savage Land.......2002-08-24
This is a slim trade paperback that reprints issues #1-4 of the Marvel Fanfare comic from 1982, which were written by long-time X-Men writer Chris Claremont.
Parts 1 and 2 feature Angel of the X-Men and Spider-Man on a trip to the Savage Land, a prehistoric enclave. Illustrations are by Michael Golden.
Parts 3 and 4 feature the X-Men team circa the Uncanny X-Men 140s, including Storm, Wolverine, Nightcrawler, and Colossus. Illustrations are by x-artists Dave Cockrum and Paul Smith.
The story involves the love interest of Karl Lykos/Sauron. It wraps up stories from the 60s of Uncanny X-Men (Savage Land Mutates) and the 110s (Sauron, Zaladane). As always, Ka-Zar (a character in the Tarzan vein) is involved.
This book would make a good companion buy with either (or all) of the following: (1) the X-Men Visionaries: Neal Adams tpb, which collects the original 60s Sauron and Savage Land Mutates stories, (2) Essential X-Men #1, which continues the Sauron story and introduces Zaladane, (3) the X-Men Visionaries: Jim Lee collection, which tells the ultimate Zaladane/Mutates story (a truly excellent story about Magneto and the effects of violence, which touches on many of the ethical themes of classic X-Men comics.)
The artwork is good (Smith's later run on Uncanny is really outstanding). The story is vintage Claremont, not his very best, but solid. The themes of personal courage, respect for the natural order, and ethical conduct are all there, and it's a good introduction to the characters.
If you're a fan of late 1970s/early 1980s X-Men who's looking for more, you'll like this. I sure did. The Savage Land is always a fun ride.
If you're looking for an inexpensive comic collection for a young person, this is great. If they like it, I'd suggest following up with some of the X-Men Essentials collections or the Dark Phoenix Saga. The X-Men really are complex and powerful bit of American pop culture. Love them.
Ok story, gorgeous art.......2001-04-11
Reading this book when I was 13 left a big impression on me. I had always heard how great it was, and when I finally read it, it became one of the first "serious" superhero books I had ever seen. To really nail this point there's an article at the back of the book saying how "serious" a book this really is and how superheros can be a "serious" medium. I don't know if superheros can be a serious artform, but this book is worth reading. The whole thing, from the cover to the art to the story has a erie feel to it. Today many superhero books are very dark and gritty, but this is Spider-man after all, and it's not typical to see him in this kind of book. Maybe kids today won't find anything unusual about it, but if you are used to the normal happy go lucky Spider-man, this might be of interest. Some of the dialogue might hook you or it might just bug you. It can get pretty weird somtimes. The plot is interesting enough, and might be a real treat if you don't already know details. Now the art by Mike Zeck (and Bob McLeod?) is gorgeous. This was back when mainstream comic artists could still draw. Very lush figures, real faces, look at the lady cop who gets a little to close to Vermin, I used to stare at that frame because her expression is so real! Spider-man is in his black costume which is also great for visuals. For me the art really made the book. This is not a typical Spider-man story, and it is certainly worth reading.
X-Men : Savage Land.......2000-08-05
This series features the original characters, the original team, in all-new adventures drawn and told in a manner reminiscent of the Silver Age era but incorporating some of the more sophisticated storytelling techniques adopted since then. Perfect for older nostalgists without interfering the current timeline. Plus, it's a good read that current X-fans curious about the X-Men's earlier days can enjoy too.

"Drake shows a skilled hand at description and atmosphere. Though occasionally there is an awkward passage or two, overall she's very effective at evoking responses. One of the most effective scenes in the book is when a boy burns out his magic, and Drake handles his response delicately and very saddeningly. Among the chilling scenes are the Wolfjackal's attack on Jason and its later attempt to lure him over to evil, and the bizarre dreams that are connected to his future as a Magicker. My only real beef is that the response of the kids to learning about the Magickers seems a little too casual."

"From the first line, I was hooked. Emily Drake's expert writing leads you on a marvelous adventure in which magic is very, very different than JK Rowling's world."

More Harry Potter -- Good or Bad.......2006-11-22
The Magickers, by Emily Drake, is the tale of Jason, a young boy with a bad family situation. Living with his stepparents because his mother and father died, Jason does not feel accepted. he is invited to a camp, which is shrouded in mystery. here, counselors seem to float around, and unheard of animals attack. this is no camp--it is a school for magick. The students are learning magick to battle the dark hand...sound farmiliar? that is what i thought too. it is almost exactly the same as Harry Potter. still, it manages to keep you on your toes. A great read!
Don't waste your time............2005-08-14
Billed as an "American Harry Potter", it's so far from the truth it's laughable.
Where Harry Potter has pure magic, incredible fantasy, and knows how it feels to be a kid, The Magickers' plot is trite, slow-paced and plain dull, with a definite '60s' feel to it - as if the author doesn't have a clue about kids today. The characters are dull, the dialogue is so ridiculous it's laughable, and the plot goes nowhere. I can't believe I waded through to the end of it, hoping it would get better.
Does anyone want a free copy of the second book in the series? There's no way I'm going to waste any more time on reading this author's books.
A wonderful story filled with action, adventure, and more!.......2004-12-19
I have been reading the Magicker series ever since it came out. I have fallen in love with these charcaters and find that this series is just as good, if not better, than Harry Potter. Jason has gripped my heart many times and I have found my heart racing along with his during his trails of fear, heartache, and betrayal. The characters in this story makes me want to believe that they are real and that they will all survive what is happening to them. This book in the series left me baffled and my heart racing. I can't wait to read the next one and many more!
So-So........2004-12-12
I originally picked up this book because it looked mildly interesting... and really, that's all it turned out to be. It's sort of sad that it's such a rip-off of Harry Potter; the author seems to have plenty of good ideas of her own. I also appreciated the references to other fantasy books, though I have a feeling it's an example of the literary uh-oh 'pepper-jack': Insertion of something the author likes as one of the character's likes. I wasn't all that fond of Jason or Bailey, the two most main characters, but I thought that Henry and Trent were both very interesting and well-written.
For the most part, this book is pretty well written. The author's style still needs to mature a bit, but the second and third books in this series are already much better.
All in all, it's something to read when you're bored and have nothing else to do. It won't leave you with much, but it's sort of fun while it lasts. I, for one, really hope that the author writes more books in a few years-- maybe she'll be able to avoid the pitfalls 'The Magickers' series falls into by then.
A Wonderful Series that Bests Harry Potter.......2004-04-11
I picked this up at the bookstore near my home because I always buy a book and thought this one would be, at the very least, interesting. From the first line, I was hooked. Emily Drake's expert writing leads you on a marvelous adventure in which magic is very, very different than JK Rowling's world.
Another thing I love is that the characters are very well developed. Piece by piece you are offered insights into the lives of Bailey, Ting, Jason, Trent, Henry, and the rest of the delightful cast. Everyone has a story to tell, and Emily Drake expertly tells them. A marvelous series in which magick can be harnessed by using ordinary stones like amethyst, Ms. Drake leads us on a wonderful adventure into a new and unique branch of fantasy and magic.

the story of a wonderful brother.......2000-06-03
This is the true story of a wonderful Christian brother - Harry Lee. A man who lived in the times of the cultural revolution in China, who at one time lived quite well and had servants, but who later would lose everything that he loved including his sister and brother. And his Russian refugee sweetheart Nadia would flee the country. It is the story of a man who unjustly spent 7 years in a prison cell no wider than you could spread your arms along with three other men, who slept every night sardine style with a toilet bucket by his head. He had only a bowl of rice a day, which he would put water into to give it the illusion of fullness. When the propaganda announcements came over the loudspeaker everyday he would sing his Christian hymns under the noise so that even those who knew him wondered if he had become a communist. This is the story of man who would then spend another four years on a prison farm after being released from prison - a prison farm that killed his brother. This is the story of a man of great conviction and courage who waited his entire life for the Lord to bless him and use him.
But the story does not end where the book ends. After graduating from seminary - dream that he waited his entire adult life to realize, he met his old sweetheart Nadia again, but she was married to another man - she had received no word from Harry and had decided to get on with her life. But as only God knows why, her husband died and after her grieving was completed she married Harry Lee. So finally, after years of waiting, he was reunited with his lost love. But alas, during one of his never-ceasing speaking engagements, Harry became ill, and he shortly thereafter passed from this life to the next.
I will always remember Harry Lee as a softspoken gentleman who bore the marks on his body from the nightly beatings that he suffered at the hands of the communists. I will remember him as the missionary who happened to come into town when I was befriending some teenage Chinese Acrobats and that he gave me tracts to give to them. But what I remember most is that he was the epitome of what we all strive to become in our walks with the Lord. May his story richly bless you.

Book Description
When Nancy Silverton began serving sandwiches one night a week at Campanile, her and husband Mark Peel’s award-winning restaurant, she envisioned a laid-back and intimate evening when she’d be able to relax, chat with customers, and have some fun devising new and creative recipes. Well, she hasn’t had much time to relax: Sandwich Night became one of Campanile’s busiest nights, a vastly popular weekly tradition in Los Angeles and the place to be on Thursdays. And since then, sandwiches have become the latest craze to hit the American food scene.
The reason for Sandwich Night’s success is easy to understand: the sandwiches are incredible. They’re gourmet meals that happen to sit on bread, the furthest thing away from the boring old sandwiches that we usually content ourselves with. Instead of PB&J or tuna salad, how about Braised Artichokes, Ricotta, and Mint Pesto with Pine-Nut Currant Relish? Or Eggplant, Seared Tuna, and Anchoïade? Or even Bacon, Avocado, and Watercress? These open-faced sandwiches are innovative dishes that taste wonderful, look beautiful, and are perfect for entertaining.
The closed-faced sandwiches are delicious new takes on well-loved standards like the Croque Monsieur, the Monte Cristo, the Reuben, and, of course, everyone’s favorite, the Classic Grilled Cheese. Also included are Nancy’s creative sort-of sandwiches—Fondue the Swiss Way, Snackbreads, and Skewered Mozzarella—and tea sandwiches, wonderful creations that will banish memories of limp watercress and insipid egg salad forever. As if this isn’t enough, there are the mouthwatering sandwich cakes and cookies, like the Open-Faced Berry Brioche Sandwich, Chocolate Cake Club Sandwich, and Almost Oreos.
There are recipes for some truly addictive bar snacks, like Cheese Fritters and Candied Spicy Walnuts, to serve before the meal. And there are also recipes for tantalizing spreads and condiments that go well beyond the ordinary. Finally, for the cook who wants to make everything from scratch, Nancy has included recipes for different breads, from Brioche to Hot Dog Buns, based on those from her world-famous La Brea Bakery.
Written in Nancy’s charming, down-to-earth style, these recipes are versatile and easy to follow. As good to look at as they are to eat, these sandwiches offer a new, creative solution to entertaining and will be a valuable addition to the home cook’s repertoire. The result: Sandwich Night is sure to be a hit in your home, too.

firstly, i want to say that Nancy Silverton is a brillant baker. this book is not for people looking for quick sandwich ideas. i mean, why bother buying a book of sandwich ideas that aren't special? rather, it's a book that attempts to introduce impressive sandwiches to the menu designed to impress, and to inspire the reader to try different flavour combinations in a friendly but tired vehicle like a sandwich.
anyway, i wanted to mention that a review above roasts Ms. Silverton for supposedly not knowing what a croque madame is but the reviewer was grossly misinformed. a croque madame does traditionally include a fried egg, not chicken. in america and the UK, for whatever reasons, the traditional croque madame has transformed in a croque monsieur with chicken instead of ham, but, according to the Larousse Gastronomique, Ms. Silverton was 100% correct. which makes that review incorrect, in addition to being petty and snotty.
A complicated way to get fat.......2005-06-15
I read through this book in an effort to put a little healthy variety into my lunches. This definitely was not the book for me.
This book is for the gourmet who has the time and resources to put in hours making a SANDWICH. To begin with, it's a good idea to have a special sandwich cooker. Then, many of the ingredients would require scavanger hunts at speciality stores, or even mail order.
Most of the recipes require cooking many ingredients, and sometimes preparations may begin days in advance. And, healthy they are not. Many come with liberal dousings of butter, highly salted meats, eggs, and many other fat-laden ingredients.
A great jazz musician once said anyone can make the simple complex; it takes genius to make the complex simple. Let's just say simplicity is not Silverton's strong point.
I'm sure there are many tasty recipes here if you have the time to scout for the ingredients and hours in preparation for a little meal on a piece of bread; and you are willing to subject your body to highly salted and fat-laden foods to make a SANDWICH, this book is for you. But, I'd rather just eat a Big Mac. Couldn't be any worse for you.
Frankly, with my limited time, I prefer to keep my sandwiches simple and put my energies into making real meals.I gave it an extra star because the photography is good.

One step further in redefining my palate.......2005-01-14
I love cooking, in a real serious aficionado kind of way. A few months ago, I became obsessed with sandwiches and I bought this book . At first when I got it, I started reading it and became a little "are you out of your mind" but then decided to give it a chance. I made the Fried oyster sandwiches, the monte cristo, the remoulade sauce and bagna cauda (relatively easy recipes) and WOW, I was hooked. I guess my problem at first was that I supposed I was buying a Subway or Quizons do it at home book but was I wrong. These sandwiches are top of the notch gourmet food for a refined and balanced eating experience. Atention to detail is essential and most of the recipes require a lot of pre preparation beforehand for the final assembly (culprit to my initial drawback). The desserts are dazzling (I tried the Not Nutterbutter cookies and the Blums Crunch cake) and I hold this book now amongst my most treasured ones. If you love fine food, don't mind slaving a little for a worth while dazzling finale, buy this book, it will change your outlook on sandwiches forever.........
And the cookies are to die for!.......2004-04-21
I picked up this book because I have baked from Nancy's La Brea Bread Book before and I love her attention to detail. But what sold me was the recipe that the book fell open to:
"Not Nutter Butters". When I read that this was her take on a Girl Scout Cookie that the entire family loves, I just had to check it out.
The cookie was everything I hoped for and even more work than I expected. But worth every hour of it. Now onto "Almost Oreos" for the chocolate lovers in the clan.
Oh, and the sandwiches....simply amazing! Nancy has done it again.
