5 out of 5 stars Cant Stop Reading Gayle Lynds.......2007-06-08

Whats funny is that while I was reading Masquerade I was telling my wife and kids about it.. They thought it sounded too crazy or weird to bother with. Then last week when the boat ran out of gas I went for gas and left them in the boat for an hour. Well my wife picked up Gayle's book and started reading the book out loud to the kids, and they were mesmerized, no pun intended. My wife kept the book from me and finished it before I got it back. I first read the last spymaster then ordered every Gayle Lynds book on Amazon. I'm still reading. My wife incidently has never read any kind of "spy" novel and she doesnt dare start another. 3 out of 5 stars A little confusing.......2006-08-29

Lynds has made some strides in breaking away from simply aping Robert Ludlum's style, but this book has a little too much going on. While it's an entertaining read and does advance Lynds' universe, the plot becomes a bit confusing at times. It would also be nice to have a little more realism as it's hard to believe that the same character can overcome impossible odds quite so often.

2 out of 5 stars Completely Unrealistic Plot.......2006-07-05

In my opinion, a good spy thriller has to be believeable in order to be truly enjoyable. This is one of those books where you have to completely suspend disbelief in order to enjoy it. This is probably Lynds' intention -- pure escapist entertainment -- but it just didn't work for me at all, due to the rather fantastical nature of the plot.

I also found that many of the characters in this book were two-dimensional, more like cartoons than real people. In the end, I didn't find myself caring about any of the main characters.

I suspect your enjoyment of this book will depend on your literary tastes. If you like the work of Robert Ludlum, Iris Johansen and David Baldacci, then you may want to give this book a try. If you prefer John Le Carre, Daniel Silva and Michael Connelly, then I would definitely skip this one.

4 out of 5 stars A good thriller.......2005-12-05

I like the plot. It was multi-layered with lots of twists and turns. The characters have believable developments through out the course of the story. The only thing I don't like is the pacing of the story. The beginning was not focused enough. Too many sub-plots floating around, which drags the story too much. I didn't really get into it until I get into the second-half of the story.

5 out of 5 stars Spies, Lies, Twists and Double Crosses, Plenty Action Too.......2005-10-25

Is she a rogue CIA agent or an innocent reporter? Is she Liz or is she Sarah? Why doesn't she remember her furniture, her crooked finger, her lover? What is wrong with her? Amnesia caused by brain fever as a result of an accident, or is it something more, something to do with the pills she's being fed everyday? These are the questions Liz Sansborough has to find the answers to if she's going to survive.

When she wakes without her memory, Gordon Tate, her lover, tells her about an accident and the amnesia. He feeds her a pill, tells her it's an antidepressant. He tells her she's going to be better soon. Just as she starts to feel safe and thinks maybe she really will get her memory back, two men break into her home, guns blazing. Suddenly Gordon has a gun and he's shooting. He tosses her a gun too and to her amazement and horror, it feels familiar and all of a sudden she's shooting as well. She kills one of the intruders just as more men break in. Good guys this time it seems. They take her to a safe house and then fill her in on her memory blanks.

They tell her she's a CIA agent and the only living person who had ever seen the face of the international assassin the Carnivore and, because of that, the assassin is determined to see her dead. She is confused. The CIA tells her they will protect her and they send her to the Ranch in Colorado, a CIA field agent training school, to hone up the skills she can no longer remember. However during the training she secretly stops taking the antidepressants and gradually other memories, memories that shouldn't belong to her, sneak into her mind, causing doubt after doubt. She voices these doubts to Gordon and he turns mean and now Liz knows she has to get away.

And that's just the beginning of this woman in peril thriller that will have you guessing as the story takes one unexpected turn after another, so many remarkable twists in the plot that you'll feel the fall as the rollercoaster races downward at the speed of light, then you'll grab a breath as it starts upward again, then a sharp turn, and still another.

Big praise from me for MASQUERADE. It's an international thriller of the type that Robert Ludlum used to write fifteen years ago, full of enough spies, lies, twists and double crosses to take your breath away and to keep you glued to your chair until you finish the book.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars A Caricature of a Thriller.......2006-04-12

This is the story of the ultimate covert operative. It is almost entirely plot with a half-hearted attempt to throw in some characterization. All the typical elements of the genre are present--government power gone awry, fantasic scientific progress known to only a select few, assassinations, missions impossible, etc. Despite the formulaic nature of the story, Mr. Ambrose manages to capture your attention as he throws everything into hyperdrive--no chapter seemed to be longer than five pages and nothing really ever resolves. An ending that was obviously meant to be philosophically enigmatic just made me think, "huh?" and then quickly left my mind. If you are looking for a book that leaves you thinking about anything--pick something else. This one wraps up quicker than a TV movie.

Frankly, the author borrowed a great deal; from Fleming to Ludlum with a dash of Clancy and the pacing of Cussler. As pure entertainment it succeeded but it aspires to absolutely nothing more. In striving for mystery and the "killer twist" this author goes just a bit too far, pushes just a little too hard. The story is too far removed from reality.

So, if you are stuck in an airport or have a couple of hours to kill, pick it up--it is a quick read and holds your attention reasonably well. Just don't bring high expectations...

5 out of 5 stars Mind-bending thriller.......2004-09-26

Charlie Monk is a 007-type loner, a special-ops super-spy who works for a government agency so secret even he doesn't know its name. In between spectacularly successful assignments, Charlie lives a healthy bachelor life with a happy assortment of girlfriends in Los Angeles. Sounds like a fantasy life? Maybe. Maybe not.

Susan Flemyng is doing cutting-edge neurological research on replacing visual memory in brain-damaged patients when her husband is killed in a plane crash. In the midst of her grief, a stranger approaches, claiming to be a journalist. He says her husband was murdered upon learning about secret government uses of her work. The man is clearly a paranoid conspiracy nut, but when he, too, turns up dead, Susan decides to do a little checking up. Until the conspirators kidnap her young son.

What Susan and Charlie have in common seems to supply a particularly monstrous answer to the question of Charlie. This revelation sets the story going in a new direction, full thriller mode. But wait a minute. Not so fast. Ambrose ("Coincidence") has another trick or two to play. Or three or four. Or more.

Outlandish, witty and chilling, Ambrose's mind-bending story successfully juggles issues of perception, the nature of reality, medical ethics and research, and government power in a page turner that will keep you guessing all the way through.

5 out of 5 stars A Wild Ride.......2004-06-01

David Ambrose's suspense-filled The Discrete Charm of Charlie Monk offers one of the strangest, most labyrinthine plots I've ever encountered. It's a difficult novel to pin down: Bourne Identity meets Memento meets St. Elsewhere meets...but if I told you the final element it would give away the biggest surprise in the book.

The Charlie Monk to whose discrete charm the book's title refers is a highly trained government operative who works for an organization so secretive even he couldn't identify it. Given orders in clandestine meetings by his otherwise nameless master, Control, Charlie undertakes thrilling, James Bond-worthy missions--and in his off hours satisfies his Bond-sized appetites. Charlie is the perfect secret agent, focused single-mindedly on the task at hand, obedient, almost effortlessly lethal, and loyal, having been rescued by his current employers from an unpleasant childhood in an abusive orphanage. Charlie's memories of that period of his life are curiously indistinct, but that is something the book's other principal character can help him with: Dr. Susan Flemyng is a brilliant research scientist who specializes in the brain's retention of visual memories. She and Charlie cross paths repeatedly in the book.

For the most part the writing in The Discrete Charm of Charlie Monk is transparent, as is appropriate in a book you want to speed read through. (I clocked in at just over 24 hours.) In a few action scenes, however, the narrative seems abbreviated, as if a paragraph or two were left out in the rush of describing dramatic events, and the reader is left confused about exactly what is happening. But it doesn't matter. The Discrete Charm of Charlie Monk is a wild ride that's well worth the read.

5 out of 5 stars Simply One of the Best Action/Thrillers I've Ever Read.......2004-05-26

Oh boy. . . How do I review this book in more than the one word "wow!"?

Charlie Monk is specialist, a killer for a government agency so high it has no name. He's the best of the best--he does his job perfectly and asks no questions. Or at least, he didn't.

When he runs into an old friend, things start to go odd with his life. Charlie starts to question things. . . things that others higher up apparently don't want questioned.

What might sound like the run-of-the-mill action thriller is anything BUT run-of-the-mill. What Charlie discovers is earthshaking for him. He is delivered one shattering punch after the other, and the reader shares the shock of those punches.

The only flaw I could find in this novel was the occasional absence of description and that sometimes too much happens at one time. Both of these are common in this genre and in no way lessened my enjoyment of this fantastic book. Sure, it's not a literary gem like Pride and Prejudice or Lolita or Rebecca, but it is simply one of the best novels I've ever read. I picked it up, on a whim, thinking that my husband might like it. Turns out we both did!

I'd love to tell you more. I wish I could give you the reasons that I read this book through in one evening, but I can't ruin it for you. So, do yourself a favor: if you have any interest in a roller coaster trip for the mind, get this book, buckle yourself in and enjoy the wild, unforgettable ride.

5 out of 5 stars What a Great Book!.......2004-01-05

This is the third Ambrose book I have read and all seem to be totally different in style. This is probably the best one. It seems to combine The Matrix with James Bond and some generic engineering. You never know what is real and what is virtual reality.

Charlie Monk is a super agent recruited by the government to perform Bond-like tasks. In some cases some of Charlie's actions seem like the work of a covert operation where the government may be eliminating witnesses, so we are not sure whether or not Charlie is a good guy or a bad guy.

Also, Charlie seems to not really be able to remember his past (note: there is a quote in the front of the book from Sean Connery saying the same thing about the James Bond character not having any past prior to being a secret agent). Addiitionally, there is a doctor forced to help the government in some experiments involving patients with no short term memory so you are not sure if Charlie was one of those patients or not. Sometimes the author takes you along a different path and makes you think Charlie is something else. (I will not say anymore along these lines because I do not want to spoil it for the reader).

The book never gets boring and there is plenty of action and psychological drama going on. I practically finished this book in one sitting, it was that good!

5 out of 5 stars A surrealist classic.......2005-05-16

A Spy in Amnesia is the truest, cleanest, highest and wildest manifesto on what it means to be alive since the passing of Henry Miller. Here is a runaway stagecoach full of explosive opium. Here is a metaphysical freedom rider's call to arms, a garotte made from a garter belt, a long slide off the deck of a ship during a violent storm at sea that lands you in the heart of the harem. There's not a single word of falsehood in this book. But burned into every page-as though written in blood with a dying man's last breath-is a map to Elsewhere. Set sail.

5 out of 5 stars Spy into Amnesia.......2005-01-31

"A Spy in Amnesia" is an intriguing journey into the passion of a man and the restraints of a society. Through the use of letters to an imaginary ex-lover, Semilian examines society as we know it and as it ought to be. Both entertaining and provocative, philosophical and literary, the reader whirls from beginning to end, from reality to fantasy, confronted with their own view of life and how it should be expressed.

Semilian's use and play of language is as fascinating as the book's content.

Definitely a book for the mature reader and seeker.

Book Description

5 out of 5 stars Amazing prequel to 'The time master' trilogy.......1997-11-03

This book is the first volume to the 'Star shadow' trilogy which is a prequel to 'The time master' trilogy. I think the second and the third volume in the trilogy aren't yet available in the U.S.A. but I have the English edition and they are entitled: Eclipse (the second volume) and Moonset (the third volume). I give 10 to the entire trilogy because this volumes are also awesome. I think it's really interesting to read this trilogy before 'The time master' trilogy because you already have a background to the story and understand much better a lot of things. I think the story is very well structured and original and the characters aren't stereotyped. Chaos is ruling the world through the magi and the gods of order are exiled and can't reach the world, but there are people still loyal to the gods of order whom the magi call heretics. When the first magus dies, magus Vordegh becames first magus, but though he's a poweful sorcerer he's evil and insane and starts to take measures to erradicate the heretics that doesn't meet with a consensus among the magi... Iselia Darrow is loyal to the gods of order and was recently married to a man who's also loyal to her gods. She's captured by the chaos riders during a warp,(they don't know she's an heretic) and taken to the castle. Benetan Liss is the Captain of the chaos riders, he was captured when he was 12 and was betrothed to Iselia. When he discovers she's in the castle, feelings he didn't remember come back and he becomes divided between love and duty.... Louise Cooper's view of the eternal war between chaos and order is very interesting, and you get the idea that if the equilibrium of the world is to be maintained neither can rule forever!

5 out of 5 stars An excellent read, well worth the time........1997-01-05

As usual Ms. Cooper has outdone herself, stepping back into the artfully created world of her 'Time Master' trilogy. Going back into the recesses of history, she unveils some of the myth and legend of the time before the Lords of Chaos were displaced from their rulership. Good plot twists, excellent character development. If you found either of her previous Time Master trilogies interesting, this will be a must have series as well.

4 out of 5 stars The beginning of the end of Chaos' reign..........1996-05-29

I made the unfortunate mistake of thinking this book was a stand-alone; it isn't. This is the start of another series (likely a trilogy). Regardless, the book is very good in its own right and well worth the cost for a true Cooper fan.

Cooper sets up a very interesting set of characters, taking her usual cross-purposed individuals to new heights. Benetan Liss is the captain of the stormtroopers of Chaos' legions, yet he has numerous moral misgivings to the things he must do. Iselia, Benetan's one-time lover and now married to another man, is a staunch proponent of the now-demonized forces of Order, must hide her forbidden allegiance to those powers while she serves the historian Savrinor. Savrinor is the ultimate pragmatist -- to the extent that he keeps a near-literal "slate" of who owes him and who he owes. And of course, there are the extreme characters Cooper uses to polarize her undecided characters: Kaldar, Iselia's husband and mage of Order, and Vordegh, High Magus of Chaos, sadist, and murderously insane ruler of the mortal world.

At this stage, the Lords of Chaos and Order put in only minor appearances, unsurprisingly. Even though this is before the time period of The Time Master, Tarod seems to have a better-than-average grasp of the mind-set of humanity. The book is a very good lead-in to another series, one which should explain a good deal of the pre-Time Master mysteries. But unless you like waiting on a cliffhanger, you may want to wait until the rest of the series is in print.

I was hoping for some new recipes but the book had mainly just the basics by a different name.

          5 out of 5 stars Wonderful cookbook!.......2007-01-14

I actually bought this cookbook for my new daughter-in-law. I have had one myself for years and it is my favorite of all my cookbooks. I have given it as a gift to several other friends over the years as well. It has recipes that are easy to follow, made from ingredients I have in my kitchen, and the results are the kinds of dishes my family loves. I highly recommend it if you are looking for down-to-earth recipes for family favorites!

5 out of 5 stars The Pantry Friendliest Family Cookbook Out There.......2006-06-04

This collection of recipes, assembled by the MOPS (Mothers of Pre-Schoolers) from it's member's best-loved recipes was an answer to prayer for me! I found this little book after a long, frustrating and almost fruitless search for a family-oriented cookbook that didn't send me to the grocery store every time I opened it. My family has liked everything I have tried from this cookbook, it's all been ultra-easy to make, and the shopping is a breeze. The book is also full of little anecdotes, hints, suggestions, tips, and get-the-kids-in-the-kitchen activities which make this book a delight to read.

But this review isn't without it's criticisms--I must say that one of my fellow reviewers is right--it does have quite a bit of butter in it, and admittedly, it's got its share of canned biscuits recipes (but boy, they are soooooo good!) but not enough to dismiss it outright by any means. After reading and reveiwing scores of "family" cookbooks, I found that for your family's menu, you really can't get it all in one cookbook--sometimes you're going to want to fall into the First Rule of Really Really Good Food and make a real crowd pleaser. (What's the First Rule of Really Really Good Food? You know it: The More Fat It Has In It The Better It Taste, n'est pas?) And of course, a lot of the time you're going to need help making it healthier, and then in some cases, there's the budget to consider.

So with that in mind, don't expect this little book that's written primarily for quick and easy eats to have it all. If you need food that's healthy, I recommend Better Homes and Garden's Kid Favorites Made Healthy. But for myself, I find that sometimes I do want to spoil my family and make something easy and quick. I also want to watch my budget--which is why I'm happy using a combination of books, and this is just one of several. But it is a really good one and will broaden your menu without tiring you out.

Keeping that glowing recommendation in mind, I will say I was frustrated by the lack of pictures and hope that subsequent editions have at least a few photographs or illustrations. I had a hard time imagining what the Buffet Eggs looked like, and the same goes for Crunchy Chicken Rolls (which are really good, btw).

They also add some asides about food and how it relates to family, my favorite being "Create a few familiar standard menus for your family. Don't feel guilty about preparing the same two or three dishes together. You're actually creating memories of comfort foods for your children. We all have favorite memories of menus or foods that bring a sense of consistency and contiunity to our busy lives."

Wise words, and a wise buy; so feel confident in buying this little volume of ultimately useful recipes! You won't regret it.

As for the other books I use, (just in case you're curious) see my Listmania list for Family Eats.

4 out of 5 stars Beyond Macaroni and Cheese.......2006-03-09

I thought this book was a good help in coming up with different ideas for dinner. I think it is geared for older kids though.
If you are stuck in same rut of chicken, noodles and canned green beans this book will help out!

          5 out of 5 stars I love this book!.......2005-08-14

This is a great book! I have *thee* fussiest 2 year-old eater on the planet. We've had an occupational therapist and a nutritionist working with us on my daughter's eating for close to a year. When she finally started eating, I got this book so I could try new things for her. Tonight I made the Chicken and Stuffing recipe which was very easy to make (and inexpensive), but it looked so complicated on my daughter's plate I said, "She'll never eat it.." But tonight was the very first night she nearly cleaned her plate! My husband and I kept saying, "Slow down." I have tried a few of the recipes from this book, and my husband says the reason my daughter likes them is because they are flavorful. So many kiddy cookbooks are lacking in flavor, which is very important to my daughter.

          And we like them too!

The definite pros of this cookbook are:

          1) the ingredients are easy to find - most of them are probably already in your kitchen.
          2) it's very practical!
          3) the recipes share a lot of common ingredients and they're inexpensive, so you don't end up spending a fortune at the grocery store.
          4) the recipes are EASY (almost impossible to mess up) and very convenient for the busy mom or dad.
          5) they are flavorful!

Also, the book is filled with little suggestions and stories, which I find annoying in some books, but I found extremely clever, helpful and endearing in this book. A lot of writers try writing their cookbooks in that familiar "passing on recipes from a friend to a friend" format, which usually feels very contrived to me. I thought this book, however, succeeded in doing that.

I've had my fair share of disappointments with cookbooks, but not with this one. I borrowed this from the library but I'll definitely be buying it. This is a GREAT book which I highly recommend for busy moms and dads who don't want to feed their children the same old recipes all the time and won't do fast food.

I am so glad that Carrie has the voice to speak to those who have and work with children about teaching them that there is more out there to life than video games and tv. Thank you for showing us that God is really Beyond Macaroni and Cheese!
