                    Book Description

                    The Eternal One

At our human limits, when we've gone as far as flesh and imagination can take us, we meet the Eternal One.

                    The Crow

Immemorially old, and inconsolable, he is there only for those who seek both revenge and love, and are willing to go all the way - and beyond.

                    Clash By Night

A crazed militia has planted a bomb in a day-care center, and a dedicated teacher discovers it just in time to get herself and the children to safety.

Almost. For we are in the dark universe of the crow, where the innocent must die so that justice can triumph.

Where a woman devoted to peace must don camouflage as she prowls with her black-winged familiar through the tangled underworld of hate on a search-and-destroy mission that leads her from gun shows to the rubble of the disaster.

A rubble that is stirring with new and hideous life...

3 out of 5 stars Best Of The First Three Novels.........2004-03-23

So far, this novel has been the best. The "villians" are justifiably hate able. And the avatar's reason for returning is not for their spouse or loved one but for the love of their children ie the children Amy Carlisle watched at the Daycare center. One thing confused me though. The villians had and kept their religious up bringing but( i don't truly recall)didn't that big gathering allow the anti-christians too? Besides that, the policeman helping the avatar seems cliched now and (maybe it's cuz Im male but)i thought Amy gave too much thought to what the cop was saying. The best of the three books so far and this i would partially recommend

5 out of 5 stars Clash by Night Review.......2003-08-17

A brief synopsis: Amy Carlisle is a barren woman who finds a little piece of joy in running a daycare. Since she is unable to bare children, the children she tends to become her surrogate children. A extreme right-wing groups decides to send a message to the government, and Amy finds herself along with her children the plot of an extremist attack. In seeking revenge on the ones who hurt her and her children, she finds that she may just be turning into a monster herself.

Wow, I really enjoyed this story. It was nice to see the story of the Crow with a female hero. I also like the premise of a motherly love that brings back the character rather than the love for a spouse or a lover. I think this is currently my favorite in the line of Crow books. Williamson describes scenes with a jarring vividness. I was even touched to tears in a couple of the scenes.

He did an excellent job at showing how a mother's love and anguish. You could literally shape Amy's feelings-her rage, her love, her suffering-with you hands. Amy's a character that mothers and young women can relate to. She's a nurturer, but she also holds a gritty edge that makes her "cool".

He also did a good job in combing the element of hate and politics into his story, giving it a gritty fill. I found it hard to stomach all the hate that flowed from the antagonist. My only complaint is that ending seemed a little rushed, but the twist of events at the end really made up for the seeming rushed finished.

                    5 out of 5 stars excellent.......1999-05-14

this was one of the best books i'd ever read i would tell anyone to read it.because it just shows if you love and care for somebody anything can happen for you if you believe.

5 out of 5 stars The Crow lives on in this book........1999-03-01

If you liked the movie or original graphic novel, you are bound to love this book. It deals with the raw emotion of having all you love stripped away, and all that's left is vengence.

5 out of 5 stars Very Good Read.......1999-01-13

I feel that this volume in the Summer set of Crow novels was the best. It definantly was the longest of the 3, for the most part due to Chet Williamson taking more time to setup and explore than the other authors did. Once I hit chapter 25 there was no stopping me as I had to finish the novel after reading chapter 25 that evening. There are familiar characters used, like ANOTHER policeman helping out, but despite the lack of originality there I felt the story was fresh and capturing. I am more and more becoming a big fan of Chet Williamson. I highly recommend anyone to pick up the new Crow anthology book "Shattered Lives & Broken Dreams" and read Mr Williamson's short story in it. He has definantly become one of the best at telling Crow related stories.

                        4 out of 5 stars One World's Science is Another World's Magic.......2007-09-20

This is a rainy day favorite. A long-time hard scifi fan, I also enjoy scifi with fantasy leanings, if I think it's well done (and doesn't lean too far!). I loved this variation on the clash of two civilizations existing in different dimensions. A network of worlds based on science; Serii, a no-tech world based on magic; the tangling, and eventual conflict between the two.

In this book, Quin Hamly, a sorcerer, infiltrates the high-tech worlds of Network to locate the family of two Network refugees that escaped to Serii. He must also assess the threat that Network may pose to his home world. The author has written other books in the Network/Consortium setting, but this is the third involving two of the main characters and my personal favorites, Rhianna and Kaedric.

Quin is guided and monitored by Rhianna, the "Infortiare", by tradition, an office occupied by the most powerful sorcerer currently living. They are "aided" by Kaedric, Rhianna's husband and the most powerful and dangerous sorcerer not-quite-living; a former Infortiare until his "death". Meanwhile, Rhianna is also dealing with dissent among the wizard rank and file. The wizards, a notoriously fractious and uncooperative group, are the planet's primary line of defense against a possible Network threat.

Truthfully, my favorite parts of this book take place on Serii and when it focuses on the relationship between Rhianna and Kaedric. While not THE main characters, their story and personalities had more appeal for me, while Quin and Katerin weren't quite as compelling; even a tad annoying at times. I also enjoyed the unusual twist on Serii's origins. And so the FOUR stars. An excellent read. I enjoyed it immensely and I do recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars I've read this book fifty times!.......1999-01-04

This novel follows the life of the immortal wizard Quine Hambly from the age of two until he becomes an emisary (spy) to the high tech civilization that created his race. I can't begin to tell you how much I like this book. It has everything. From sword and sorcery adventure, to intruige and high tech espianage. Can sorcery overcome science? Or will it simply master science and keep going?

Rao's is an old, 10-table restaurant in an old, New York-Italian neighborhood in which old Italians still may or may not live (this was never made quite clear in Nicholas Pileggi's complete-history-of-Italian-immigrants-in-America introduction to the cookbook), but you can't go there to eat. Not unless you know someone who has a lock on one of the tables. These are shared occupancy tables, condominium tables. Every night (Monday through Friday) is already spoken for--has been spoken for, in fact, for quite some time. Mixed in with the names of the obvious rich and famous and powerful who get to eat at Rao's (and who have enthusiastic things to say about Rao's throughout the cookbook) are names of the not-so-obvious to anyone who hails from outside the Italian neighborhood that spawned them. Rao's sounds like a dream of what New York once may have been like--joints on every corner full of character and soul--or what everyone would like to think New York may have been like. It sounds a little like a Disneyland nostalgia experience that just about everyone will never have.

So bless Frank Pellegrino for putting Rao's kitchen between the covers of this book. If you want the excitement and charm and comfort food of Rao's, you can now cook it yourself and pretend that's Dick Schaap sitting over there, and Rob Reiner coming though the door with Woody Allen, Brenda Vaccaro, and John-John. Plan on eating lots of tomato sauce, for Rao's springs from the same roots that gave America Italian red sauce restaurants of the checkered tablecloth and Chianti bottle candle holder stripe. Rao's does it far, far better, and with soul. The late Vincent Pellegrino, who made Rao's what it seemingly continues to be, was particularly fond of grilled meats, and those sections of the book are exemplary: simple, straightforward, to the point. Even the tripe sounds like it might be worth trying.

If you want to cook Italian and not sweat the regional details, this book is the one to pull off the shelf. --Schuyler Ingle

                                        Book Description

Rao's, the hundred-year-old restaurant with a mere ten tables tucked in a corner of East Harlem in what was once a  legendary Italian
neighborhood, is one of the most sought-after restaurants in all of Manhattan. Its tables are booked months
in advance by regulars who go to enjoy what The New York Times calls its "exquisitely simple Italian cooking" from traditional recipes,
many as old as Rao's itself. You may not get a table at Rao's, but now with this book you can prepare the best Italian home-style food in the
world in your own kitchen. Here for the first time are recipes for all of Rao's fabulous classics--its famous marinara sauce, seafood salad,
roasted peppers with pine nuts and raisins, baked clams, lemon chicken, chicken scarpariello, and on and on.
The recipes are accompanied by photographs that re-create Rao's magic and testimonials from loyal Rao's fans--
from Woody Allen to Beverly Sills. Here too is a brief history of the restaurant by Nicholas Pileggi and a Preface by Dick Schaap.
Both will convince you that what you have in your hands is a national treasure, a piece of history, and a collection of the best Italian
American recipes you will ever find.

I had been wanting this cookbook for a very long time, but it was quite expensive to buy brand new in the bookstore. I found it on Amazon and it was half the price! I ordered it, it arrived quickly, and I'm quite pleased with it. The recipes are amazing and very easy to follow. Visually, it is a beautiful cookbook, great photos and I loved reading about the history of Rao's. The introduction was great!

The end results are delicious meals that you will want to cook again and again. So buy the book and you'll be serving your family & friends meals that will delight them all.

5 out of 5 stars ITALIAN COOKING MADE SIMPLE!!.......2007-06-20

I heard so many wonderful things about this book that I decided to order one for my friend. I gave it to him as a surprise Christmas gift and he was very pleased. He has tried most of the recipes and the meals are delicious. The book has lots of pictures, and the recipes are simple and easy to follow. You can find the ingredients at your local supermarket without any hassles. Every time I visit my friend, I see the book opened on the table or countertop and I know he's cooking something from there. This is one of the best purchases I ever made.

5 out of 5 stars Authentic recipes for people who know real Italian cooking.......2006-04-16

This book covers appetizers, soups & salads, pasta, risotto, chicken, meats, seafood, vegetables and sweets in an old-world, family style way. If you've ever had real Italian food, cooked by real Italians, you'll know within a few minutes of browsing this book that it's one of the best. From the marinara sauce to a mouth-watering Pasta e Fagioli (Pasta & Beans), from the Shrimp Scampi to the Steak Pizzaiola, this collection of recipes (and the excellent quality of printing) more than justifies the somewhat frightening cover price. Once you prepare and taste just a few of these recipes you'll find out that the jar sauce and green cardboard container of grated cheese in your cupboard have only one place where they belong: the trash can. Many thanks to the Rao family for passing these treasures on to us.
