Times change.......2003-05-13
This is my first book by Anne Rivers Siddons. I must say she has a fine way with words and story-telling. However, I expect this group of stories played better in 1975 than it does today. Siddons portrays herself as awfully childish in almost every essay, crying buckets of tears and fretting over the most superficial aspects of life. If you like the modern-day southern belle genre, you might enjoy this, but if you like your women a little gutsier, steer clear.
"Steal Away Your Work Day Soul".......2002-05-03
The evening news has always drawn me like a magnet - but sometimes watching it is soul wrenching. Past months have been particularly poignant. Mass murder in the name of God and parents murdering or abusing children entrusted to them, and on and on, it all become cumulative. I knew I had to replace my copy of JOHN CHANCELLOR MAKES ME CRY and re-read it. Isn't it too cool when a book is even better the more you read it? Can I recommend this book enough?
Ms. Siddons' foray into non-fiction is an excellent introduction to the depth of feeling and emotion in the many fine books she has written since. There is something that touches me on every single page of this year long glimpse into the life of this very REAL lady. Weather, stepchildren, cats, suburbs, politics, it's all there, along with a delicious slice of Maine and summers on the seashore. "On fast-darkening twilight patios, when you are thrumming with sunburn and clean and still damp from a shower, in fresh cotton and on your second tall drink, it can steal away your workday soul." I find myself again and again in this deliciously emotional piece of non-fiction. "I am a natural if sadly undisciplined and haphazard hostess." "Do not go gentle into that good night." Her love of words, her politics, her empathy make for one of the best reads EVER. Please read this, and love it for me?
Colony.......2000-01-20
I have recently found Siddons works, and have read 6 so far. They engross the reader, take him into the story, and keep him there to the end. I would love to know more about the author, and exactly how she totally captures the audience. Thank you ms. Siddons for many engrossing hours.
A true writer lets you into to her life, her heart........1999-09-02
After reading the first of many addictive books by Siddons I couldn't help but wonder what she was like as a person, what kind of life she had lead that made her such a wonderful writer. Reading this book gives me such a good idea of where she got many of her ideas and nuances for her very vivid characters. I can see her in all of them now and I am thankful for the glimpse into her real life and her real feelings. It is a very rare treat for anyone who admires her writing and wants to know what makes her tick. Very courageous of her!!
If authors were flowers, Anne Rivers Siddons'd be a garden!.......1997-08-24
I came late to discovering Anne Rivers Siddons. Since I did, I have read everything she's written and am never disappointed. So I was delighted to find, upon reading her early work, "John Chancellor Makes Me Cry," that she has been good from the beginning. Her characterizations have only improved over the years. Her books are not easy reads or mind candy; they are absorbing, thought-provoking and totally consuming. I can hardly wait till the next one is published
Book Description
Janine Lewis is a pregnant, single mother whose life has become rather hectic. As well as juggling three lively children single-handed, she has ruffled a few feathers by becoming Greater Manchester’s first female Detective Chief Inspector. At last, Janine has been given her first murder enquiry to head. The body of a local deputy head teacher is found with a slashed stomach and left to die. With a suspect on the run, an elderly dying man and a seven-year-old child as the only available witnesses, Janine knows this won’t be an easy case to crack.

Excellent.......2007-08-06
Easy summer read. Coming from the south, I could identify with each character. I absolutely love the moral under tones of all of his books. If you like this one then check out It's All About The Moon When The Sun Ain't Shining.
So Predictable.......2005-03-16
I had to read this book for our book club Sister 2 Sister in Memphis, TN and must say that otherwise I probably would not have finished it.
This book examines a week in the life of Tyrone Stokes who upon release from prison finds out that his son Marcus is on death row and will be executed at the end of the week. Tyrone has a gut wrenching feeling that Marcus is innocent and seeks to avenge him before it is too late.
This could have been a really good book but instead it moves along "as slow as molasses in the summertime." Not to mention that the ending is extremely predictable and rather unrealistic. I must admit that I was disappointed.

OUTSTANDING.......2004-06-25
This is a must read for men! I really enjoyed this book. When I got started I could not put it down. I finished this book in two days. It took me that long because I actually had to go to work on those days. (almost played sick just so I could finish it) This is my first Ernest Hill book, but not the last. Please keep of the excellent work.
Good read.......2004-06-09
Now I have finished reading three of Ernest Hill's books. I must say this book was a tie with A life for a life. But I did like the way it ended. His characters seemed so real. I could actually see the characters. Something like this really could happen. His books are definitely not a lot of fluff. I would recommend any man that has children to read his books. I'm definitely a fan of his, now. Keep up the good work.
Great Storytelling!.......2004-05-25
Cry Me A River by Ernest Hill was a powerful story of determination and redemption. Tyrone Stokes, recently released from prison and on parole, learns that his son Marcus has been convicted of murder and he will be executed in 8 days. Although Tyrone doesn't even know where to begin and although he is very limited in what he can do, he is determined to prove that his son was falsely accused and save him from death.
This story was just absolutely amazing and I cannot remember the last time I was afraid to get to the end of a book. This wasn't really a book of "suspense" but it was suspenseful since you didn't know how it was going to end.
This is my first but definitely not last book by Ernest Hill.

Strange Things Can Happen In A Regular Town.......2000-03-29
T.R. Pearson's sixth novel, Cry Me A River, is a hilarious tale of a murder mystery that happens in a small southern town. Pearson writes this story using nothing but humor and laugh out loud comedy. He gives very descriptive details and uses a clear painted picture to tell his story to readers. He allows his readers to get comfortable and fit right into the story. You can never loose intrest in this book, with his sense of humor. The narrator keeps the tale going and you can become drawn into the story while learning about the people in this small town. The narrator reveals the story and the hidden truths of the town, telling it as though he were not a part of the story. He speaks about the jealousy, lies, hate, and lonliness of the people in the town.
While unraviling this murder mystery, we get to learn about the strange people in this town, like the brothers who debate and battle about who is the bigger porno star, the two sisters who give oral gratification to men while they are driving, and the wife who cuts up and dispenses her husband, who is a local town whore. This book may be fiction, but it does not sway far away from the truth. Pearson brings this book with not only humor, but with much truth and closeness to reality. If you enjoy murder mystery's than you will definetly enjoy this book brought to you with comedy and immediate laughter.
Innocence In A Small Southern Town.......2000-03-27
T.R. Pearson's sixth novel, Cry Me A River, is a brilliant tale that is abundant with sensitivity and intelligence. Pearson takes the reader on a journey that begins in a small Southern town and ends with a solved murder. During this journey, Pearson invites us to study a town that is rich with jealousy and love. Thae narrator's fellow police officer is the man who is murdered. After the crime, the narrator is determined to piece together clues and solve the crime. However, the narrator has a tendency to find sympathy for people who are under the influence of jealousy. During the narrator's "quest for justice," the reader will learn a lot about the victim, the town, and the relationships between the men and women who occupy it. By the end of the novel, Pearson has not only solved the crime, he has captured and described the corrupt innocence of this small Southern town. "Cry Me A River" is an intelligent novel that's main success is in its portrayal of relationships of the innocent yet corrupt citizens of the town. Pearson succeeds at capturing the reader early on and taking them on a journey that is a sheer delight.
A Well-Told Story of Human Existance and Interaction.......2000-03-27
T.R. Pearson offers a fresh and entertaining approach to describe the nature of human relationships. The novel itself is a story--a story ment to be told to someone casually, over a drink, serving as a best defence against boredom. Although the narrator is the main character, the participant in his story, he seems detached, almost alienated from the world and people around him. He is the observer, the stranger caught in the world he doesn't quite understand. As the novel progresses, he discovers not only the people around him, but himself and the place where he belongs.
The novel is centered around the murder, its causes and consequences in a small Southern town. However, this center serves as a background for the net of distinct and sharply observed characters. The simplicity and naiveness of each is tragicomedic; the layers of every character so skillfully unveiled, reveal their essence, their quest for acceptance and belonging, their fight against loneliness (the narrators sister-in-law for example finds her "aristocratic" roots and changes her behavior accordingly). The author suggests that every event in the monotonnous routine of the town--murder, unfaithfullness, jealousy, hate, gossip--serves as an enterntainment. The narrator as well as a set of his unforgettable characters--the old couple who runs off together, the neighbor with his aerobic practices and records, the young couple at the movies--are stunned by their surroundings. They don't know what to do with themselves; quite literally they have been placed into the world they don't understand and didn't choose. In the realtionships, contacts, and interactions, they try to hide their loneliness and their alienation.
The reader could recognize and realte to their struggle, as every character resembles the battle of identity and individuality--an ongoing process in every society. As the author simply puts it, "...we were after all, under the surface of things, a community of passionate people who sometimes salughtered each other for love (2)." Whether it is a unsingnificant town in the South or a cosmopolitan center of the world, we are looking for the place to fit in, for the place to belong, the place which we may call our own. The author introduces a concept of "transformation" in several chapters. The person is transformed or waiting for someone to be transformed. As a result of this transformation, he/she gains a different perspective, a different or new outlook, and is viewed and interpreted differently by others. Such was the transformation of the narrator's stepfather, and transformation was expected from Red by her lovers. The notion of transformation is the destination of the search for identity and freedom. To be transformed means to find at least one aspect of individuality and stability; in a way it is the acceptance, the placement in a particular section or stream of life.
The story is skillfully constructed; it is enterntaining, sharp with sense of humor and a hint of sarcasm. Although the narrator often wanders off from the actual murder story, the suspence is still present. It could easily be predicted who the murderer is early on in the story, but what is more intersting is the fate of these colorful characters and of the narrator himself.
mayhem and mystery.......2000-03-27
T.R. Pearson's thoughts of the late twentieth-century life in the Southern states are clearly characterized by his bleak humour and by his unique style of story-telling. In his "Cry Me a River", Pearson, like many other Southern storytellers keeps his listeners on the balls of their feet. Pearson does this by making all of his meanderings extremely interesting, while making sure that all the roads ultimately lead back to the main event. "Cry Me a River" is a wonderful illustration of this tactic. It is a detective novel whose revelations never quite add up to absolute certainty or a clear-cut conviction, but something even better --justice.
"Cry Me a River" deals with the account of a policeman (Mendle) who is shot to death outside a small town west of Virginia. One of his colleagues not named who is the character, begins a search for the killer. The story is a mystery according only to the loosest of definition; instead though, the narrator unfolds long stretches of comical stories of his fellow citizens. Some readers enjoy trying to weed out the sense and serious matter in these sentences. Yet, there may be others who do not find this game to be funny at all. "Cry Me a River" begins with the image of a woman who "hadn't been born into loveliness though plainly she'd compensated, could manufacture well enough what she needed of seduction, fabricate what she required of charm" (2). Pearson then continues to digress into numerous funny tales of murderous rage, bloody wrecks, domestic battles, and unforgiving cops. Yet, when this woman's image reappears as a creased Polaroid in the secret hiding place of the wallet of a dead man, it almost seems that we as readers have been secretely carrying it around too.
Pearson's novel is a tale of crime and punishment. "I'd not however, had much call to see too many murdered ones since locally we weren't given ourselves to that variety of mayhem" . This mayhem however deals with the fact that if the story is not good enough, you simply make one up. This is what the narrator does in fact throughout the entire novel. Pearson's rambling seems to tell us the whole story, but not the whole truth. The way in which I was able to deal with his picaresque style is through his funny writing.
A number of very funny moments and sharply obscene scenes emerge. The account of the dangling of a car-thief off the bridge, the descriptions of varioius murders from the narrator's past and of the uncomfortable Christmas he spends with his brother's family have their own minimal means. Other pieces like the coctail parties of his gay neigbor, or the fighting over porno movies are even funnier in their own way.
Despite all of this joking and comedy in his work, Pearson is still able to suggest the serious manner in his work. In the end, both the narrator who is responsible for an unnecesarry death and his tale remain unsatisfying. "Cry Me a River" is simply a murder mystery told Pearson's way, and is the reconciliation between the individual and the community.
Cry Me A River.......2000-01-26
T. R. Pearson's "Cry Me A River" has convinced me it's time to sell the television. I'd forgotten how delightful it is to fall in love with the characters in his books and laugh until my sides ache at his genius presentations. I tried reading the excerpt about the graveside "...twenty one gun sendoff" to my sister over the phone but just couldn't get through it from choking with laughter. I can't imagine this will ever make it to audio unless it's done by a computer. If you want to take your mind on a 'who-done-it' that makes you cringe, gape in awe and puzzlement, laugh out loud and at times nearly (or actually) gag, this will lead the way.. Every nuance of the people and places comes through so well--I could nearly smell the stale rye on Ellis's breath and half expected to hear the Ledger delivered at the front door. "Cry Me A River" made me the kind of homesick for friends, family and a place to live that is available only by reading about them from a safe distance. I didn't want to turn the last page.

Book Description
Presenting the space adventures of Arthur Morton McAndrew, space-time expert and scientist extraordinaire, and his long-suffering companion, spaceship skipper Jeanie Roker. Jeanie first met McAndrew on a routine run to Titan and quickly learned he was a genius of the caliber of Newton or Einstein. When McAndrew invented a space drive that let frail humans survive hundreds of gravities of acceleration, he disappeared while testing it, and Jeanie had to find him, using a trail of cryptic messages he had left behind.
That was the beginning of a beautiful friendship, in spite of the gray hairs that Jeanie began accumulating as a result of McAndrew's impractical nature and his talent for getting himself into trouble with much more practical villains, such as...
- A mass-murderer of several million people
- A highly-placed government official whose life McAndrew saved, but in an embarrassing way, and who consequently wants to kill both him and Jeanie
- The ruler of a slower-than-light spaceship that left Earth a long time ago, giving it time to develop some very strange customs by the time McAndrew and Jeanie visited it.
And there are still more adventures of this spacegoing odd couple in The Compleat McAndrew.
Publisher's Note: Part of this book was previously published as One Man's Universe.

The Adventures of Arthur McAndrew and Jeanie.......2007-08-10
This book deals with the hero of several short stories written by Charles Sheffield. Most of the stories have a scientific bent and once you get past the techno babble ( though the author does explain most of it in the last section of the book... which is interesting enough) the adventures are fast and fun. Would recommend this book to anyone who likes Hard Scifi
-Morgan C.
Wonderful!.......2002-03-14
This was one of the best books I have ever read! It's about the best physicist, his expeditions in space, and the captain of a spaceship who has to follow him all over the universe. In the time period in which this is set, a mechanism has been invented that allows you to travel at faster-than-light speeds. The physicist, McAndrew, improves this mechanism by 100 percent. The spaceship captain, Jeanie Roker, has become his friend, and tries hard to make sure he doesn't get into trouble. However, together they face the "Headmistress" (I would call her that, based on her personality) of a slower-than-light spaceship with weird customs, a serial-killer, and many other people and machines that wish to kill them. Most of the time they don't deserve it, though, and they are always able to solve the problem.
Put on your thinking cap and get on board.......2001-03-03
I am not fond of futuristic science fiction novels. I was not fond of futuristic science fiction novels, that is... Sheffield has converted me. His pseudo-physics speculation is fascinating. His stories keep your interest and don't waste time with undue detail. His characterization lags by comparison to the rest of the story - but is still better than most of your sci fi/fantasy writers. You spend the whole book thinking, "That's really cool" while you keep turning the pages to see what happens next. I highly recommend it.
great collection of "hard" SF stories.......2000-12-02
I was glad to see that all of the McAndrew stories are available in a single volume. If you like hard science fiction, well, these stories definitely put the "science" in science fiction. Certainly character development is not a major consideration in any particular story, but by the end of the book we have a pretty good idea of what McAndrew and Jeanie are like.
One or two of the stories suffer in comparison to the others, but the overall quality is pretty high. I loved this book, but if you are not a fan of hard SF, this may not be the book for you.
Great science fiction with the emphesis on science.......2000-07-05
This is an excellent collection of short stories. Each story explores one or more areas of Science and takes them to a future extreme. As noted in other reviews the characters are there simply to help explain the science by using the science.
The stories also get into a little humor and politics with budget problems and people mischaracterizing discoveries which adds a certain realism to the stories.

Simply Classic - Simply the Best.......2007-10-08
I have been the proud owner of the Simply Classic Cookbook for over 10 years. My copy is worn out, splattered and the binding is splitting. I will be purchasing my SECOND personal copy shortly. But aside from that, I've purchased at least 2 dozen copies and presented them as gifts to numerous friends and relatives. To echo other reviewers, this cookbook never fails to deliver. I've made countless recipes out of this book and have never been disappointed. My 16-year-old has grown up on the Northwest Autumn Salad (page 82) and hands down, loves it more than any other. Glazed pecans is a staple of our holiday season (and year round too) and my friends and co-workers would be disappointed if I didn't deliver. If you can only have one cookbook, I'd recommend Simply Classic. Thank goodness it's not out of print!
I love this cookbook.......2007-01-30
What is great about this cookbook is the variety of recipes. The recipes are unusual yet the ingredients are not hard to find. I usually don't like cooking very much, but this book gives me inspiration. Many of the recipes are quick to make. The enchilada recipe is my favorite recipe from this book. It does take longer than other things but it's worth it. I make it for many friends and they always want the recipe.
Great Book!.......2006-03-14
I have made 3 of the recipies in this book so far, and each one turned out great!
I am new to cooking (I am a bachelor), and I found the descriptions to be extreamly useful!
My favorite cookbook.......2006-01-31
I was given this cookbook as a wedding gift and it has become one of my favorites. Whenever we are having company or I just need new ideas for a delicious meal, this book is the first one off the shelf. I have found most of the recipes to be fairly easy, healthy and absolutely delicious!
Simply Fabulous.......2005-02-02
I can't believe there are so many amazing recipes in one book. This is the cook book I reach for time and time again. I use it every week. The recipes are simple to make, and delicious. Pick any random recipe in this book and you will be pleased. The Champagne Chicken is the best chicken dish I have ever tasted, and it never fails to impress even the most discriminating guests. The salmon dishes are to die for, and there is an entire chapter devoted just to salmon. My friends and family think I am a great cook, but I really am not, it's just this book.
