Book Description

HEART OF DARKNESS*AN OUTPOST OF PROGRESS*KARAIN*YOUTH The finest of all Conrad's tales, 'Heart of Darkness' is set in an atmosphere of mystery and menace, and tells of Marlow's perilous journey up the Congo River to relieve his employer's agent, the renowned and formidable Mr Kurtz. What he sees on his journey, and his eventual encounter with Kurtz, horrify and perplex him, and call into question the very bases of civilization and human nature. Endlessly reinterpreted by critics and adapted for film, radio, and television, the story shows Conrad at his most intense and sophisticated. The other three tales in this volume depict corruption and obsession, and question racial assumptions. Set in the exotic surroundings of Africa, Malaysia. and the east, they variously appraise the glamour, folly, and rapacity of imperial adventure. This revised edition uses the English first edition texts and has a new chronology and bibliography.

5 out of 5 stars Deep.......2006-07-29

The four tales in this collection are beautifully composed; they are art, not just stories. Each story is deep in its unique complexities. Each one has plots and subplots and paints an impeccable image of the story upon the reader's mind. And when I look back upon the book as a whole, upon the adventurous stories, the excitement and emotion that the author presents so exquisitely, I can't help but be extremely impressed.

1 out of 5 stars 4 Monkeys.......2004-06-26

If you gave an infinite number of monkeys an infinite number of typewriters, would they eventually produce the complete works of Shakespeare? Who knows?

What I do know is that "Heart of Darkness" could be the result of 4 monkeys doing about 2 hours of work. To read the book is a chore.

My daughter had to read this book as part of a summer assignment for English. I, being one to read classics, looked forward to reading another good book.

Conrad's rambling tale is difficult to follow, but even more, BORING to follow.

I can more easily read a book on quantum physics. To require someone to read Conrad is more like punishment than education.

5 out of 5 stars Actually haunting..........2004-06-21

The word's thrown around a lot, but this is the only case where I've actually been literally haunted by a book. It surfaces in the mind when I don't intend for it to, and its disturbing. I've never been really psychologically messed with by a book like this. I mean, not bad, but I get chills thinking about it. Like someone said, the images are great. The ship firing into the continent is one of those I can't get out of my head. And for those of you who are curious after seeing Apocolypse Now, I think they really messed up the Kurtz character. Its one of, if not the one of, my favorite movies, but he's so overacted and the script never really tells what the horror is. From the movie I got that it was the situation and man's situation, but from the book it is definitely the mind and soul, in my opinion. Any social commentary in the book is secondary to the more philosophical and psychological, here, I feel.
I also enjoyed Lord Jim and every one of his other short stories I've read, but none have been as good as Heart of Darkness. I'll probably read Nostromo pretty soon, too. If you want another take on a somewhat similar situation in colonial Africa, check out Journey to the End of the Night by Celine. I didn't so much care for the book as a whole, but that part has stuck with me.

5 out of 5 stars Full of crazy characters and vivid images.......2004-05-03

Heart of Darkness is, without a doubt, one of the best and most confusing books ever written. It is probably the most discussed book of the 20th century, and an obscene number of academic papers, criticisms and interpretations have been written about it. What does it mean, everyone wants to know. It is so impenetrable, to use one of Marlow's favorite words. Even if you don't want to spend the time figuring out the "message" (if there is one), this is a great novel simply for the characters and the images.

Our narrator, Marlow, is a fascinating character in himself, and he always makes me smile with his wit and insight, though he can be a little pretentious. Kurtz is an enigma, a man who has set himself up as a god with unclear motives. He is taken care of my a Russian harlequin, a hilarious idealist who forgives that Kurtz once threatened to kill him (you can't judge a man like that by ordinary standards!) Marlow comes across many others, such as the fat Englishman who cannot stop fainting on their way to see Kurtz. The imagery is evocative and haunting. A group of starving indiginous men are referred to as a "bundle of acute angles." The scenery is described better than a movie could portray (Apocalypse Now does the jungle no justice.)

It's a short book too, so you have no excuse for not reading it!

4 out of 5 stars Book = great - durability = awful.......2003-08-31

I was assigned Heart of Darkness as part of my summer reading regiment for my english class. I usually don't enjoy assigned books because I often try and pay attention to all the details rather than just read it for fun. However, this book, albeit a bit confusing, is definately good. It really gets your brain going as you question your own opinions on imperialism. Plus, it contains explanatory notes in the back, which definately help to understand the context. However, its MAJOR fallacy with THIS exact publication is its shoddy manufacturing. I've had the book only for one month and the pages that Heart of Darkness are on are already falling apart from the binding of the book. And I treated it well - all I have done is placed it in my backpack when traveling to a few places. Overall, the literary piece is good and so are the explanatory notes, but if you can't stand your book falling apart (trust me, it's really annoying), then search elsewhere for a different copy of this book.

      5 out of 5 stars Great Literature.......2007-07-31

This book contains four stories: Youth, The Secret Sharer, An Outpost of Progress, and Heart of Darkness. All four are very good stories, and the last 2 are absolutely first-rate.

Youth (1902) is a short, somewhat autobiographical account of a voyage to Bankok.

The Secret Sharer (1910) is a short story/novella about a young captain who encounters a fugitive on his boat with whom he identifies uncannily.

An Outpost of Progress (1896) is a short story about two white men living at an ivory trading station. Conrad said this was his best story, and, from compared to the other 3 stories in this collection, I'd say he's correct, although Heart of Darkness comes close.

Heart of Darkness (1910) is a novella about a man who becomes a steamer captain in Africa. A masterful work.

The book is $8 at Borders. There one or two printing errors, but they aren't that noticeable. I think they missed a period and added in a few accidental "I"s. Buy it; its a good collection of Conrad stories, containing both his most famous (Heart of Darkness), and his best (Outpost).

4 out of 5 stars Tommysaurus Rex delivers.......2007-05-30

This small edition to the TenNapel library is a lightning fast read, but delivers on all the right notes. Every story point that is set up is paid off nicely without being bloated or overly sentimental. A fun and heartwarming read, though not quite recommended for kids under 13. Pick up Tommysaurus Rex today and enjoy.

                5 out of 5 stars Excellent Tale.......2006-06-14

Though I put this story in 2nd place behind Ten Napel's, what I consider to be, masterpiece, "Creature Tech," it is still an excellent story in its own right. My only quib was that it seemed somewhat short, but I guess if you can tell a story in fewer words then do it. The thing I like about Ten Napel's stories is that he doesn't tell a story just for the sake of telling a story and making money, there is always something going on with Ten Napel's stories and they are lessons that are not discussed or presented nearly enough in today's world. Its why his works will be kept for years to come and I'll be passing them onto my kids and perhaps even read them to them! =)

5 out of 5 stars Exactly what you'd expect from TenNapel..........2006-06-14

Wonderful art, characters you fall in love with, down to earth life lessons...and the ability to make you cry with a book about a dinosaur. Doug really is one of our best storytellers...and an amazing artist.

5 out of 5 stars great graphic novel..........2006-04-26

Its a shame those who simply want to push their own agenda have to critique a book they didnt care for to begin with. Obviously the leftist I am refering to has a gripe with TenNapel's personal beliefs or they would have not reviewed this graphic novel the way they did.

"Forgiveness through understanding" is a Christian ideal that showed up a long time before the word "leftism" or "rightist" were ever thought of. Also, not every "leftist" is "forgiving," just like not ever Christian or "rightist" is forgiving. The proof is in everyone's actions, not words, titles, or classifications.

Why a reviewer would attack someone's personal beliefs is beyond me. You would think if they are leftists preaching forgiveness, that they would forgive TenNapel any mistakes (not that there are any, btw) they perceive exist in this graphic novel.

This book sits well with TenNapel's other works. Dynamic drawing and a thought out story, based on the here and now, as much as fantasy.

                enjoy

                1 out of 5 stars Paf.......2006-02-02

Dissapointing and rushed. Themes that are forced and aren't satisying or believeable.I can't even say that it's worth it for the art. If you enjoyed Creature Tech and are above the age of 12 I'd give this one a wide berth. Give me Dinosaur story without the teaching. Or at least hide your message better.

An interesting thing I've noticed from this book - The reader is supposed to forgive the bad guy because he is only bad because of his home life (parents have split up). This flies in the face of everything that Doug Tennapel believes in. Forgiveness through understanding is a Leftist ideal that he is strongly against. Yet Tennapel preaches the opposite. Hard to swallow.

                Book Description

Patrick Troughton battles to save mankind in this classic six-part `lost' television adventure, with linking narration by Frazer Hines.

The TARDIS brings the Doctor, Jamie and Victoria to the south coast of present-day Earth. Something nasty is lurking in the gas pipelines of the North Sea, and before long the nearby refinery is under attack.

Landing on a foam-covered beach, the travellers are at first mistaken for saboteurs. A number of the refinery personnel have been behaving strangely, and the base chief, Robson, is showing serious signs of stress. Meanwhile Maggie Harris, having been stung by a mysterious frond of sea vegetation, is menaced by the sinister engineers Oak and Quill.

As sentient foam and weed combine to frightening effect, it soon becomes clear that the danger emanates from beneath the sea. Can that really be a heartbeat coming from deep inside the refinery pipes? Will the Doctor and his friends be in time to prevent an entire take-over of Earth - and will they all escape with their lives?

First broadcast in 1968, Fury from the Deep is the last story to feature Deborah Watling as the Doctor's companion Victoria. Long missing from the television archives, it is regarded as a classic adventure from the era of the Second Doctor.

                2 CDs; 2 hours, 15 minutes.

5 out of 5 stars Story sadly missed.......2006-10-31

I'm 30, and Spanish. These two facts made absolutely impossible for me to have seen Fury from the deep on the screen, and so many other sadly missed stories from Hartnell's and Troughton's Doctors. I have no memories of wobbly sets, hilarious monsters, and very bad special effects in black and white, so I'll just talk about this as an audiobook. And it is really good. Funny, tense, entertaining troughout. Frazer Hines' narration is very good, it's clear how much he enjoyed the series, so he gives his best to make the final product the best possible. The sound effects are very effective, specially that of a heartbeat when something's going to happen. The cast is impressive. Only with the voices you can realize when someone's under the spell of the weed. I have several BBC radio collection Audiobooks from Doctor Who's lost stories, and this is the best so far, followed very near by The Daleks' Master Plan.

4 out of 5 stars The Weed ! The Weed !.......2005-03-13

"Instead they opened their mouths and emitted a burst of toxic gas..."
"Someone amongst us here is under the control of the weed..."

In Watling's final turn in 'Doctor Who,' the TARDIS lands on a blue planet orbiting a...Yes, it's Earth...in a country called...Yes, it's England again...on a beach -- The staggering BBC budget extended to an outing further afield than the chalk-pits apparently -- where the Doctor, Jamie, and Victoria stumble upon a North Sea Gas-Operation (*Yawn*) which is apparently in the process of being taken over by a deadly seaweed (Yes, SEAWEED !!!) giving off toxic gas, taking over people's minds, etc., and...Seriously, do you actually care ?

For me, this is pure delight. These shows are the reason we gave for cancelling 'Who' in the first place. But that aside, this particular outing stands out for two reasons: One is that Victoria in this story brilliantly points out the obvious fact that the Doctor seems to be continually putting his companions in trouble and that something goes terribly wrong in every trip they make (Really ?). Like other future companions whose actors have a sudden desire to exit the series, Victoria undergoes this awakening without any prior indication of dissatisfaction, declaring that she is "fed-up." Amen. The other and most wonderful thing about the audio-production of this particular episode of 'Who' (I won't go into the Beeb's fantastic policy of recycling videotape just now) is that the narration is provided by none other than Tom Baker. Tom is getting old now and is clearly none too happy that his entire life and career is publicly gauged by a silly role in a children's programme he played back in the Seventies. His acid sarcasm is evident throughout as he stumbles through this narration, pausing only for another swig of gin. The abundance of alcohol evident in his narration is presumably the explanation for his seemingly inexplicable confusion of the Doctor's second incarnation with his first... I just live for this stuff ! That, and perhaps, guest-appearances on 'Jonathan Creek'...

3 out of 5 stars Sentient seaweed stalks Doctor and Co........2002-07-30

No sooner has the TARDIS splashed down in the North Sea than the great Doctor and his companions Victoria and Jamie are caught up in another terrifying threat. Strange, mind controlling seaweed is getting sucked up from the depths of the ocean and is taking over a natural gas drilling platform and its crew. Can the Doctor and his companions help save both the day and the threatened crew?

Doctor Who: Fury from the Deep is the first Doctor Who adaptation I have read in quite a few years (the last one I clearly remember reading was back in High School) and it wasn't half bad. Too bad the novel was mostly the shooting script in narrative form, some of the action even reads like stage direction the writer didn't both to translate more effectively. Some greater attention to atmospheric detail would have been nice. That quibble aside the book remains a fine adventure that the Doctor's fans should enjoy, but non-fans will no doubt scratch their collective heads and just mutter, huh?

3 out of 5 stars Good attempt that loses out in the translation.......2000-10-22

This is Victor Pemberton's adaptation of his own script, which is the final story of companion Victoria.

Landing on the coast of the North Sea in England, where the first indication that something is wrong is a strange, rhythmic sound the Doctor can hear from inside a gas pipe. Before they can investigate. They are shot with tranquilising darts and wake to find themselves accused of sabotage. The crews of some gas rigs have vanished, and the operations of refinery have been subject to odd changes in gas pressure within the pipes.

What is it lurking in the refinery's pipes?

This is one of many stories of which the BBC no longer has a copy. They released the soundtrack on audio cassette some years back, and it is likely to be re-released on CD sometime in the future. Some clips of the series can be found on 'The Missing Years' video, released in conjunction with 'The Ice Warriors'.

While Mr. Pemberton's novelisation is quite good, and benefits from its higher than normal page count, watching the few remaining clips only emphasises what has been lost. The portrayal of Mr. Oak and Mr. Quill in particular loses something without its visuals.

This story is one of those that does not make the transition from one medium to another without losing something.

5 out of 5 stars Frugal Recipes Without Feeling Deprived.......2007-10-03

Dining On a Dime is absolutely one of the best thrifty cookbooks available. I love to cook, collect cookbooks, but I was tired of finding recipes that required processed foods, expensive ingredients, etc. Dining On a Dime uses few processed foods to prepare recipes, as most everything is prepared from scratch. This morning I prepared a Slow Cooked Pot Roast (I cook my version on the stove top) and the only ingredients needed were a beef roast, can of cream of mushroom soup and a sliced onion. I also fixed Mom's Beef Stew which used round steak, various spices, Worcestershire sauce, potatoes and carrots. I also prepared dumplings using the baking mix recipe included in the cookbook. The dumplings were mighty tasty when cooked in the beef stew. Very simple and very tasty. Overall, this cook book is a good, basic cookbook which allows the cook to use every day ingredients to prepare tasty meals.

A keeper. Lots of tips and good recipes.

4 out of 5 stars A really handy book .......2007-06-08

I use this book mostly for the basic recipes, and it does help in a pinch. It also gives you meal ideas which are pretty easy to make and mostly kid friendly (which is important for me). I have other cookbooks, but I don't really use them because sometimes they require more time or ingredients that I have on hand at the time. This book also has handy tips in the back of the book that include making homemade play dough, soap, and household cleaners. 4.5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Frugal Resource!.......2006-09-10

Dining On A Dime is filled with money-saving recipes, many of which my family has tried and enjoyed. It is more than just a cookbook though. It presents lots of ways to reduce your grocery bills, with shopping and cooking tips galore. There are organizing tips too, as well as the beauty booklet Pretty For Pennies. A great book for every household to have. I can see where a family could save $10,000 a year as is mentioned on page three of the book. Thanks to co-authors Tawra Kellam and Jill Cooper for a wonderful source of savings in the book Dining On A Dime.

                  5 out of 5 stars wow!.......2006-05-19

This book is so worth the money! It has lots of tips and fun ideas in the beginning, and then lots of great recipies for the bulk of the book. For each section of recipies, she adds more detailed and informative tips for cooking and money saving. I am so thrilled with this book.
I think that is works beautifully with another book, Miserly Moms, which has less recipes and is mostly how-to-save-money in chapter form. Read the Miserly Moms for the info, read Dining for tips and recipies.
I'm so grateful that I provide warm, homecooked meals from scratch and healthy, fresh snacks and lunches for my family on such a tight budget!
Anyway, 5 stars and here's hoping other people get inspired to save their money as I have.
