Book Description
Academics and Wuthering Heights fans are descending on the Bronte family homestead for an Emily Bronte conference. Among their ranks are a single, over-sixty, self-professed expert on the Brontes; an overworked wife, mother, and university lecturer; a widower sustained by nocturnal visits from Emily's ghost; and a young waitress suddenly drawn into the curios orbit of academia. Each looks forward to a weekend in the company of kindred spirits, but none is prepared for the unexpected conflicts and unpredictable alliances that result.
Four Dreamers and Emily is the United States debut of an acclaimed British novelist -- a sharply observed, hilarious, and bittersweet send-up of academic pretentiousness and literary obsession.

Unquiet slumberers..........2006-05-05
While I am more familiar with Stevie's non-fiction works, including the indispensible Emily Bronte: Heretic, I found this novel to be absolutely delightful.
Even though I found the style to be a little narrative-heavy in places, Four Dreamers manages to entertain at every level. Anyone who has attended Bronte conferences or even joined Bronte listgroups on the Net, will recognize the spectrum of zany zealots that Stevie presents here. Incredibly, while the wackiness of the competing 'definitive theories' may seem laughably far-fetched, it is in fact, frighteningly representative of the reality.
Very strong characters, and a beautifully woven story, although I found the ending, though evocative, to be somewhat anti-climactic.
Two thumbs up... (Gorgeous photo of Stevie on the back cover flap.)
This novel renewed my faith in modern literature........1998-04-10
I enjoyed this book tremendously. The plot revolves around four people from varied backgrounds who are all interested, to some extent, in Emily Bronte. Their lives become intetwined and changed by each other, mostly through surprising effects of simple often unintentional acts of kindness.
While many social issues are referenced there is nothing strident or pedantic about this book, humor abounds throughout! To top it off the writing is exquisite and I will be lining up to read her next, should she be kind enough to write another!
An entertaining send-up of academia........1998-01-28
In the vein of "Moo", this book sends up several academic types, each in their own search for Emily Bronte at a conference dedicated to her in England. The writer manages to be touching, as well as funny, in her portrayal of the characters' relationships.
Poignant, funny, tender--compulsively readable........1997-09-03
This is a beautiful novel; funny, tender, poignant.Over it all is the spirit of Emily Bronte herself; but it is also a story of four lives touched by Emily's greatness, each flawed in their own way yet most sympathetic. The novel is compulsively readable, with a light touch yet a pervasive sense of tragedy. It is also in the tradition of spoof academia, a la AS Byatt or David Lodge, and the description of the Bronte conference is hilarious.Highly recommended

The (Complete) Adventures Of Tiger And Del.......2007-10-11
The Novels of Tiger and Del, Volume I
The Novels of Tiger and Del, Volume II: Sword-Maker - Sword Breaker
The Novels of Tiger and Del, Volume III (Sword-Dancer Saga)
In the beginning of this very enjoyable, unique series, we meet Sandtiger, a man who was raised as a nameless orphan, a foreigner from an unknown land and a slave within a nomadic desert tribe. He gained his name and begrudged freedom as a boy when he killed a deadly, venomous sandtiger which had been preying upon members of the tribe. Defeating death, and bearing the beast's claw marks as a distinctive scar upon his face, Sandtiger found a willing teacher who took him in and taught him the skills and honor codes of the sword dancer. Driven, he achieved the highest level of mastery, (7th level) in record time, and went on to become a living legend. Much of the story is narrated by Tiger, mixed with third person perspective. Roberson did an admirable job using this fresh technique; it works well.
When he is not hiring out his services as a sword dancer in order to settle disputes or matters of honor, Tiger, who is in his mid-30's, spends his time in cantinas, drinking and womanizing. It is within such an establishment that he is tracked down by young, beautiful Delilah, a fair skinned woman with blonde hair from the far north who carries a sword (unheard of for a female) and claims to be a sword dancer. Despite personality clashes, Delilah hires Tiger as a guide to help her journey across the very large, deadly desert of the region. Del is a driven soul, searching for her lost brother, and for revenge against murderous bandits who took him, and her innocence, years prior.
As the adventure unfolds, Tiger is forced, by circumstances and interactions, to adjust his perspectives and attitudes towards Del, and women in general. It becomes evident that Del is a truly skilled sword dancer, as well as a sword singer who is able, through her song, to call forth a mystical power which is infused within the spirit of her specially forged blade. It also becomes known that Del is quite likely Tiger's equal in the dance, a discovery which follows betrayal and near death at each other's hands. Through it all, we discover that the presence of magic is very disquieting to Tiger, both mentally and physically, every time it is encountered. This leads to ironies.
Through the first of these novels, we experience the hardships and struggles faced by the couple as they fight to fulfill Del's quests and simply stay alive. We are given views into the humorous relationship which Tiger faces on a regular basis with his very spirited, very difficult stallion. We also enjoy the gradual meeting of minds and souls of our two heroes, creating a bond of loyalty between the two, which becomes imperative to Tiger's very existence as he is eventually faced with the threat of an ancient, powerful evil which struggles to control him through his own mystical sword, a sword forged specifically for him during a journey to Del's homeland, a sword which he did not even want.
Over the course of the first four books, Tiger becomes increasingly embroiled in circumstances beyond his control, a victim of prophecy and fate. His love for Del leads him to break oaths, which makes him a target for death, outside the ceremonial circle of the sword dance. This leads to his departure from his beloved home in the southern desert region, searching overseas for the unknown, unconfirmed land of his ancestry, all upon the basis of a stranger's comments. A stranger with similar appearance and large build. This is where the final two novels begin.
Upon their sea voyage, Tiger and Del encounter pirates, slavers, and near drowning. Tiger never learned to swim, having been raised in a desert. As the story progresses, we are introduced to the interesting female captain of the pirate crew, an attractive redhead who desires Del. We also meet the first mate, a mysterious outcast from Tiger's homeland who bears strange blue tattooing upon his shaved head, multiple piercings, and a secretive knowledge of mystical powers. The mate recognizes Tiger's common heritage, and rather than selling their captives into outright slavery, Tiger is ransomed to the matriarch of his homeland as a potential lost heir to the throne. The bounty he was traded for, however, indentures and angers Tiger, but bound by his own codes of honor, he agrees to cooperate with a task she sets before him... for awhile.
Up to this point, I have attempted to offer only the most general of a synopsis, hoping to inspire interest but not to give too much away. The joy and excitement lies within the steps of the journey. From this point, If your interest has not been inspired as of yet, nothing else I say will matter. Assuming that it has, I will only say that Tiger sleeps with death, and we discover interesting things about the first mate and his abilities. Secrets are then gradually revealed about Tiger, himself, secrets he is not pleased at all to know. Intrigue and irony ensue, in large portions, in more ways than magic can account for.
Whenever magic is dealt with in Roberson's Tiger and Del novels, it is always low-key, for the most part. It is not along the lines of Tolkien's wizardry or the magic of elves, it is much more subtle, and I believe, more suited to the stories. (Nothing comes across as "over the top.") I really cannot give any more of the story away without creating a spoiler, but I will say that I was sad to see the saga end. To me, that has always been a measure of a really good book or series. This series has definately been among my favorites to read, and I am somewhat particular about what I will endorse. I hope my effort here has been enlightening and enticing.
Awesome Book, Unique Concept.......2006-07-27
Great book. Loved the stories. I'm a guy, but its nice to read about a female protagonist. Usually its the guy obsessed with revenge, and the gal doing the sensible thing. This is a unique and highly readable twist on that plot.

Rousing Action and a Complex Romantic Relationship Make This Series Special.......2007-05-01
In this fourth volume in the continuing fantasy saga of Del and Sandtiger, the partners set out across the sea to an island called Skandia which may hold the key to Tiger's heritage. But before they can even land on shore, they are captured by pirates led by a luscious female pirate named Prima who was banished from Skandian society for her lesbianism. Her first mate, Nikho, also possesses secrets that will profoundly affect Tiger's future. Prima and Nikho offer a bargain: freedom for Tiger and Del if Tiger will agree to pretend to be the long-long grandson of a dying aristocrat, the metri. Out of options, far from his Southron homeland, and out of money, Tiger reluctantly agrees to the deception. Tiger hopes that Skandia will provide answers to his identity and his strange affinity for magic. But before Tiger can win the freedom of Del and himself, he must face the power that he possesses which may lead him down a path to destruction. And somehow, Del and Tiger must redefine their relationship now that Del's song of vengeance is over. She must determine who she wants to be and how her life will be shaped either with or without Tiger. Roberson's love of these characters is apparent in every page; she draws both Del and Tiger with such subtlety and finesse that the reader never wants the book to end. The psychological complexity of Del and Tiger is one of the greatest pleasures of this series.
Sword-Dancer Convert.......2006-06-30
I began the Sword Dancer series just a couple of months ago, and bought all six volumes in one purchase. I had never read Jennifer Roberson novels until Sword-Dancer, but something about the story description on the back cover grabbed me. I had not read much in the Science Fantasy genre before, but I was ready to try something different. From that first volume, there have been no regrets. I love stories that take place in another time period, that involve cultural clashes, and if the choice of weapon to settle a disagreement is a sword, I'm in. This is no pirate story, although in Sword Born, Tiger and Del are captured by pirates and taken to what very well may be Tiger's homeland. What he discovers there about himself, in Skandi, strengthens his character, and entices the reader to want to know more about this SandTiger, not only why he was abandoned as an infant, but what his future holds for him, as much as Del does. Each book in the series is a stand alone story, but I recommend reading all of them. Jennifer Roberson appears to have done much research in creating the varied landscapes and locales in which Del and Tiger find themselves traversing. The story of the jivatmas (although in this volume the characters are without them, having lost them in the previous story), how they are created, how they bind to their maker, and how they relate to the one who wields them is quite unique. Swords with personality. The dialogue is real, sometimes funny, sometimes profound. I'm in the middle of her last book in the series, Sword Sworn. Ms. Roberson is an entertaining writer with heart and depth.
Sword-Born.......2003-01-17
All of the books in the Tiger and Del serires by Jennifer Roberson were incredible. I really enjoyed them and I would recomend them to anyone. Incredible.
The series is over?! Noooo!.......2002-07-09
I loved this book. I've been a fan of Jennifer Roberson's work for roughly a decade now.
I eagerly awaited the publication of this book and I wasn't disappointed.
The same, incorrigible Tiger and the same, irrepressible Del. Fabulous to visit their world again and their adventures from Skandi back to the South.
If you like adventure and escaping into rich, fantasy worlds, check out this entire series. I'm sad that the series has now come to an end.
Hoolies!.......2002-01-28
I really enjoyed this latest installment and eagerly await the "final?" installment. It comes out in February of this year. I really enjoyed Sword-Born because there was a different element of both Tiger and Del. Yes, I did miss some parts with Tiger and his sword, but I really felt sorry for Tiger. Poor Tiger. Great book and high recommended.

Stylish Feminist Fantasy.......2007-05-01
More than a decade before "Xena, the Warrior Princess" made female swordfighting fashionable, Roberson created a magnificent fantasy series featuring a brave, determined swashbuckling heroine. Set in the desolate, windswept lands of the South, the series is narrated by Sandtiger, a swaggering, sword-dancer who won his freedom from slavery by defeating the most feared animal of the desert. Now, Tiger is the finest sword-fighter in the South, hiring himself out, ready to take on any challenge, if the price is right. Tiger's life is irrevocably changed by Delilah, a stunningly beautiful woman on a mission of revenge. Five years before, Del's family was wiped out by raiders who murdered everyone except Del and her 10-year old brother, Jamail. After escaping from the raiders, Del dedicated herself to training as a swordfighter. She apprenticed herself to the finest sword master in the North and spent five years training. Her sword is a very special blade, a runesword made powerful by magic and incantations. When Del hires Tiger to help her find the slave trader who sold her brother into slavery, he has no idea that she will lead him into the adventure of a lifetime. In Del, Roberson has created a magnificent character whose determination to avenge her family and find her brother has compelled sacrifices that would have killed a weaker person. But Roberson also shows Del's uncertainty and her vulnerability; she is no superwoman. Although she has tried to strip herself of her humanity and her femininity, Del still possesses a heart. Tiger is a worthy partner to Delilah. Scarred by his childhood slavery, Tiger has used his wits and his physical prowess to attain the freedom and the fame he yearned for as a little boy scorned by the tribe who owned him. Although his pride and stubbornness make him unwilling to accept the depth of Del's skill, gradually Tiger must admit that she is his equal as a sword-dancer.
Action, adventure, swords, magic, and lots of sand.......2006-12-18
This is an epic fantasy story, this is an action-adventure story, this is a tale of revenge, this is a story of a quest. This is a love story, of sorts.
A woman walks into a bar and says, "I'm here to talk to a man about a horse." Well, not really. A beautiful woman walks into a bar, looking for a man called the Sandtiger, because she was told that the Sandtiger could lead her to Osmoon the Trader, who might know someone who knows something about the woman's younger brother, who was kidnapped, five years earlier, in a raid by marauders, who killed everyone in the family except the woman (then a teen-aged girl), who escaped, and the boy, who was taken as a slave to be sold.
The woman is named Delilah, or "Del," and she is on a quest to find her brother and punish the raiders who destroyed her family. She is also a highly trained sword-dancer or warrior trained in the skills and lore of swordcraft. She is from the North, where the land is cold and mountainous.
The Sandtiger, or "Tiger," is a Southron man who is a sword-dancer, acting as a mercenary. He is renown as the best sword-dancer in the South (just ask him, he'll tell you, without a trace of humility to taint the tale). The South is a hot, desert land. The South is also the home of the raiders who kidnapped Del's brother, and the South, where slavery is legal, is where Del's brother would've ended up.
Del and Tiger set off together, with Tiger as guide, in search of Jamail, Del's brother. Along the way, they bicker, they rub each other the wrong way, they doubt each other's skills. Of course, they end up being a great team, they come to respect each other, and maybe more. The quest is hard, and there are many setbacks, as there wouldn't be much of a story if they walked into the nearest village and found Jamail, safe and sound.
As the story progresses, Del gradually reveals her stormy past, and the tale of how she became a high-ranking sword-dancer, which is very rare for a woman, Northerner or Southron. We also gradually learn the dark story that lies beneath the mystique and the cheerful swagger of the Sandtiger.
This is a well-told tale of adventure, action, and a noble quest. What makes it good, first and foremost, is the character development. The reader's first impression of Del and Tiger is that we have to stereotypical fantasy saga characters, but then we find out more and more, as they work through their differences and become a team. The writing is very good, and not only is the character development great, but there is also lots of action, including many sword-fights, and a good description of the setting, both geographical and cultural. As Del is unfamiliar with the South, Tiger has to teach her about the land and the customs and culture, and we get to learn, right along with her. The lore and rituals that surround sword-dancing, in this fictive world, is complex and highly reminiscent of many martial arts, but with aspects of magic, especially for Del.
Overall, this is a fast-paced adventure-quest novel, with interesting characters and great contextual descriptions.
Great Series! Thanks Lora!!.......2006-07-20
my fantasy chick friend, Lulu recommended these series of books and they are a lot of fun! Robeson does a credible job of telling the story from the male (sandtiger) point of view,
my only complaint is that there isn't enough books in the series!
haha I guess she just wants toleave us wanting more!
Legendary Sword Dancer Meets his Match.......2006-02-11
Tiger and Del in this Sword Dancer series is a tale about two exceptional warriors having no respect for each other except for each other's prowess with the sword. This first book in the series begins with Del hiring Tiger, a living legend among swordsmen, to aid her as a guide in the deserts of the south as she searches for her brother. She is from the wintery north where swords are magically bound to its user. She has sworn to find and free her brother from slavery, and also to kill the slavers. In the course of their adventures animosity and mutual condescension becomes grudging respect, and, possibly, friendship. Of course there are lots of sword dancing, conventional battles, and confrontations with magic that will have you spinning through the pages and enjoying the thrilling ride.
Jennifer Roberson crafts exciting adventures that just happens to have fully developed main characters who you will grow to know like old friends. This book is different from novels where the emphasis is on either character relationships OR adventure. The stories of Tiger and Del balance both to the satisfaction for all readers. The story is told in the voice of Tiger. Some will love him, other readers will find him too full of himself. Yet, he is engaging, and too charming to resist the tale.
I have read the entire series and enjoy returning to the stories. If this is your first introduction to the author, Jennifer Roberson, you could not start at a better place.
Great read.......2005-07-23
I had never heard of Jennifer Roberson before I found this book on Amazon. I ordered it not knowing what to expect but enjoyed it so much I immediately had to buy the rest in the series. I love the characters and the way they relate to one another. When I bought the book I had read a review stating that Jennifer Roberson was simply trying to force her opinions on others about feminism but I only found it to be the way a man and woman would behave who both thought they had the right of it. She did not make the woman out to be perfect or right all the time and both of the main characters learned and grew to be more accepting of the worth of others for who they are. But I want to stress that this book had a great storyline and characters and that is what caused me to stay stuck with Del and Tiger until the end (book 6).

Virulent Destiny
Eight generations after the atomic mega-cull, a shattered world still struggles to heal itself. The iron-fisted rule of the nine baronies is compromised by an intrepid group of warriors who have uncovered secrets as dark as they are damning. For nothing in the history of humankind is what it seems. Reality is obscured by the grim impermanence of power . . . and deceit. All that remains is the human spirit's enduring will to survive.
Tenuous Salvation
Now a relic of a lost civilization, the ruins of Chicago hold a cryptic mystery for Kane, a secret message born of the fiery battle to rule the new earth. In the subterranean annexes of the hidden pre-dark military installations deep beneath the city -- living tombs haunted by the ghosts of a hopeless, despairing age -- a bizarre cult of faceless shadow figures wield terror in submission to an unseen, maniacal God, who has lured his old enemies into a battle once again for the final and deadliest confrontation.
Customer Reviews:
An explination, and yet more un-answered questions.......2002-02-14
As usual, the author was able to spin science and mythology into a seamless plotline worthy of the Outlander series.
The Cerberus warriors were sent to Chicago to investigate the use of a redoubt located there, and while there they encounter a very strange cult lead by an old woman who claims that she's a `fury' from Greek mythology who are there to dole out punishment for sins committed by man or woman.
It turns out that the Furies were brought to the Outlands by a small laughing god. And anyone who has followed the series from the earliest novels will be able to figure out who that is.
The novel also reveals who was responsible for saving Domi's life, as described in Purgatory road, although the reasons for the act remain vague, and of course, the reader wanting more.
A new character has been introduced as well, a man named Oakshott. Anyone familiar with English history from the late 1800's early 1900's will quickly realize who he is, thus explaining another myth that has eluded the authorities for many decades.
Thunder Isle, introduced in Tigers of Heaven is explored more fully as well, and the Samurai warrior Shizuka is brought back into the series as well. There is a whole new world of possibilities opened up by the return to this island and hopefully they will be fully explored in upcoming novels.
The only complaint I have, and it's a small one, is the fact that the novel ended too abruptly. Too many possibilities were not explored, but can quite easily be touched on in future novels.
A fast-moving and entertaining tale.......2001-12-29
This latest book in the Outlanders saga is a great piece of fast-moving entertainment. As always, it's rich in drama, action, atmosphere and characters. Recommended highly.
One Could Get Spoiled With This Series.......2001-11-29
Another Outlanders science ficion / pulp masterpiece, with cracking dialogue, cool dinosaur rides, and action, action, action. Makes one wonder why the current Deathlands suck out loud ...oh, wait, different writer under the "James Axler" pen name. Amazing how the man behind the curtain makes a project sing, or, unfortunately, hit a series of bum notes. Highly recommended!
A terrific read!.......2001-11-24
Tomb of Time is a terrific read, a return to the glory days after the somewhat disappointing Purgatory Road and the travesty of Sargasso Plunder. All of the heroes are back with their personalities, IQs and sense of humor intact and once again they're facing an old enemy who has an awesome power at his command.
This novel almost seems like it was written to make up for the lapses of the previous pair. The scenes set in the ruins of Chicago are vividly written and spooky, made more so by the introduction of the fanatical Megera and her Furies. Once Brigid, Kane, and Grant get to Thunder Isle, the mystery of Domi's apparent death and resurrection is solved while another one is dumped in their laps. And of course it wouldn't be an Outlanders novel without plenty of action and mayhem!
I can't think of any single book in any series I have every read that featured a deadly weapon that carbonizes people, faceless fanatics haunting bombed out ruins, a time-trawled serial killer from 19th century England, a machine that might make people immortal, a Pacific island populated with prehistoric cave bears and Tyrannosaurs, a charismatic master villain, a female samurai--and a whole lot of swashbucking derring-do. In some scenes, I could almost hear the John Williams score.
And though I like action as much as anybody, what made this book sing for me was the interaction between the heroes and the villain. Those were the best parts of teh book. They flew off the page. The dialogue was sharp, witty and downright hialarious in places. One thing about Tomb of Time comes through loud and clear--the surefire way to kill the Outlanders series is to condemn it to the revolving door system of writers that plagues most of Gold Eagle's other series. That policy pretty much ruined Deathlands for me since I never knew the quality or consistency of the book I was getting. It could be good, bad (mostly bad) or terrible so I stopped buying them.
Outlanders is far more complex than Deathlands, much more cutting-edge and up to date in its sensibilities so it's hard to picture another writer coming in with the same feel for the characters, much less the imagination and skill of the main writer. Sargasso Plunder pretty much proved how hard that is.
If readers were put off by that book don't give up on Outlanders. Tomb of Time more than makes up for it!
Outlanders the way its supposed to be!.......2001-11-20
"Tomb of Time" is Outlanders back the way it's supposed to becolorful settings, science-fiction, a larger than life villain, great characters and fabulous imagnation!
The mystery of who time-trawled Domi in "Tigers of Heaven" is revealed at last and an old enemy who I'd been hoping would come back for two years makes a return appearance. He's as nasty and entertaining as ever, but this time he has a new and pretty frightening henchman in tow. The action was fast and furious which is just the way an Outlanders adventure should be.
From the introduction of the faceless Furies in Chicago who mete out judgement on sinners to the Operation Chronos facility on Thunder Isle, the pace never lets up and leads to an explosive ending--literally!
One of the things which makes Outlanders so superior to most other series of this ilk is that it isn't full of cardboard cut-out characters. The heroes are very real who suffer but don't always have their pain resolved at the end of the book, so by the next book it's like nothing happened. The growth of the characters and the continuity in this series is greatly appreciated.
I was a little worried that the quality of the series was slipping after the last two books, particularly after "Sargasso Plunder" but "Tomb of Time" laid my fears to rest and once again I can hardly wait for the next installment.

A Nice Start to Baking.......2007-01-09
The instructions in this book are clear, and the recipes are good. We've made about 4 recipes in this since we got it for Christmas. The instructions are written so my 6 year-old daughter can understand them, and (with some help) she can understand the recipe. Many of the recipes are made with ingredients that are either around the house or easy to get. I recommend this as a starter book for kids who enjoy being in the kitchen.
Love it! Love it! oh- and the kids do too!.......2006-03-29
I traveled to a few different stores to puruse their cookbooks for kids. My children (3 & 5) love to cook and bake with me, and I was looking for a book with good pictures/illustrations, and recipes that were easy to make with them, but also good to eat. This one, found in a kitchen store, fit the bill. The pictures are lucious and plentiful and I can easily invite the children to pick a recipe by looking through the cookbook themselves at the pictures. The recipes are well written, and have render so far great results. I really like how that offer up a list of all items needed at the begining of each recipe. Great book for anyone wanting to bake with their young children or want to give a book to an older child ready to try on their own.
Wonderful Cookbook for Kids of all ages.......2005-10-31
I just bought this book for my 3 year old and I to cook. This a wonderful book with excellent recipes and beautiful pictures. The book is pleasant and simple to understand. It provides nice photos of ingredients and shows kids doing the tasks. I love the simple, yet delicious recipes and it doesn't rush through the recipes -- gives lots of photos so your child can learn and get excited about cooking. I am buying more for my friends with children -- a wonderful gift!
Written for kids, on their level, for their enjoyment.......2004-10-18
Not your average cookbook for children, Williams-Sonoma Kids Baking provides a basic course in baking written just for kids. The instructions are written at a child's reading level and include how to measure ingredients, correctly break eggs, beating ingredients, testing for doneness, etc. Even all the photographs are children doing the tasks.
The recipes were obviously chosen to be ones that children like to eat and include cookies, breads, pretzels, pizza, pies, and cake. Williams-Sonoma Kid's Baking is a great introduction to cooking that children can read their self and is highly recommended.

The BEST cookie book out there.......2006-05-22
I love to bake, and I've purchased quite a few cookie books, but this one -- which a friend gave to my children -- is by far the best cookie book out there. I've tried every recipe in the book, and they're all delicious. This book is not just for children. And there are cookies for a wide variety of occasions. Simply put, it's the BEST.
