Book Description
From an Alabama mining camp to India, from the Baptist church to Tibetan monasteries in Nepal, Dreaming Me is the account of how one woman realized her dreams against all odds.
The black section of an Alabama mining camp in the 1950s and 1960s is not where you might expect to find a budding Indo-Tibetan scholar, the first American woman and the first African American to become so. Jan Willis's journey from the Jim Crow south to Wesleyan University is a moving tale of spiritual exploration and a profound healing of the rage and low self-esteem that are the legacy of racism.
The civil rights movement was in full swing during Jan's teenage years, when she and her family marched with Martin Luther King in Birmingham, and when she later became one of eight black students to attend Cornell University. As with so many others of her time, Jan was constantly faced with the dilemma of how to win the struggle for freedom. She participated in the takeover of an academic building at Cornell, and she was actively recruited by the Black Panthers. But a trip to India, and her relationship with a Tibetan spiritual master, would set her firmly on the path to peace-both outward and inward.
Three decades as a student of Tibetan Buddhism gave Willis the structure and support to transform her life by helping her to confront the old wounds and to discover a well of confidence and joy we all share.

A Valuable Book.......2006-09-16
I've always had the impression that Western/American Buddhism was overwhelmingly white, upper-middle-class and academic - an impression and perhaps a prejudice (or a hang-up); in spite of having read and been influenced by the philosophy and practice through much of my adult life, I've always held any personal endorsement or affiliation at arm's length because of this - I'm not white, upper-middle-class, or an academic, and the (perceived) insularity of that particular world doesn't often seem to be very inviting.
This is why this was such a valuable read for me - Willis belongs to a very, very small demographic - African-American Buddhists, and in DREAMING ME she traces a path from a Baptist upbringing in the segregated (and oft-violent) South to her present life as an academic and Buddhist scholar. Willis' recountings of her childhood were - to me - the most successful part of the book, with the grimness of Jim Crow-era Alabama rendered in cinematic detail. Willis also - with great success - draws parallels between the faith she grew up with and the philosophies she grew to accept as an adult. Beautifully written, she makes it almost seem effortless.
Not a very well-known book, unfortunately - and I fear this may slide into obscurity. I would encourage checking it out.

Fascinating.......2004-03-07
There is something intriguing about a story which chronicles a former Baptist's alteration towards adhering to the teachings of the Buddha Shakyamuni. Jan Willis is an African-American Tibetan scholar and translator, a professor of religion at Wesleyan University and teacher of Buddhism for more than 25 years. She starts the book recording her life prior to finding the Buddha's teachings, a life spent as a devout Southern Baptist in a segregation ridden south. The KKK was active in her area of Alabama, and at a very early age they had burned a cross in her parent's front lawn. Later she would go on to march in Martin Luther King's civil rights movement, adhering to the values she so strongly believed in. In 1965, with 7 other African-Americans, she enrolled in Cornell University where during her junior year she sailed off on a trip to India which greatly impacted her life. For a brief period she returned to the states to continue her studies at Cornell, but eventually she felt drawn back unto the East again. She left this time for Nepal and underwent intense study with the Tibetan master Lama Yeshe. She studied with him for more than 15 years, where she faced a problem most predominant in all our practices: sense of self, ego.
This book is a fascinating look at a very small minority in the world of Buddhism, the role African-Americans have played in it's growth and the teaching of the Dharma. In the west, in my lineage of Zen, African-American's are probably the least represented group of all. While we have male and female teachers, and practitioners of several racial and cultural backgrounds, for some reason or another there is a very small pocket of African-Americans present. This is not due to any sort of discrimination but rather, to be frank, oftentimes the African-American individual can at times have a problem with breaking down ego. Something which has it's roots in the horrendous treatment this group underwent at the hands of a predominantly white America. This work is a fascinating look at practicing the Buddha Dharma in modern times with a voice of honesty, clarity, and incisive wisdom on each and every page. Enjoy this treasure.
Dreaming All of Us.......2001-09-19
Books like "Dreaming Me" are gifts or treasures that we rarely have the good fortune to discover. Ms Willis' journey is at times painful yet ultimately joyful. She shares this pain and joy in a compelling writing style that is filled with anecdotes and drama. No matter what your life experiences may be you are quickly drawn into the universal themes that every human being shares. As a white male living in the Northeast during the sixties I was on the other side of the world from a person like Ms Willis. Yet she made her experiences part of me. And like two parts of a greater experience I felt whole after reading this book. I highly recommend it. Thank you Ms Willis for putting your experiences into such a beautifully written book.
Universal Dreaming.......2001-06-11
This book was read in one marathon session that flew by all too quickly. It spoke to the very core of my being. Having this story told in such a personal way deftly teaches the reader at every level. It's well written and one could easily be fooled that they are simply being entertained with a good read. There were many moments where I felt stunned with deep recognition of a life experience that mirrors a good portion of my own. I connected with this book deeply at the heart level. Most touching were the moments with her teacher, Lama Yeshe. His extraordinary heart helped her heal deep societal and personal pains which have traveled across generations influencing and shaping our culture in difficult ways. Thank goodness Dr. Willis chose to develop the good heart, rather than fight the good fight. One does not need to be in a culturally specific group or religion to recognize and feel Dr. Willis' experience. She reached into the depths of spirit and wrote in a way that touches universally. This lady has a heart that totally outsizes her brilliant, immeasurable intellect and her story will benefit countless numbers. I'm one unabashedly grateful reader.
Loved Your Book.......2001-06-10
Since I have met Jan Willis a few times through my own work at Naropa University, I emailed her after I finished reading Dreaming Me. Here's part of what I wrote to her: "I just wanted to let you know how engrossing I found your book. It was like talking to you, hanging out with you, to read it. I had put it at the bottom of my pile of "books I want to read" but somehow it jumped right up to the top, and I couldn't put it down until I finished it. Please take that as a resounding compliment! Thanks so much for writing it, and for revealing so much of your big heart.

Boredom and bickering neatly synopsize the typical family car trip. Why revisit such misery in a novel, where weary family discords and the clichéd search for a hidden America all too often harry us along the desperate miles and pages? But meet the Wootens--Lila Mae and her four children--on their trek from Kentucky to California, Route 66 unfurling irresistibly before them during the late days of the Eisenhower era. In Linda Bruckheimer's debut novel, Dreaming Southern, not only is the Wootens' journey full of the requisite kicks, but we elude the nostalgic sentimentality and pat drama that stall most road-trip tales.
When Lila's bill-dodging husband phones from California and importunes her to join him posthaste, she packs her bags and announces, "If that man thinks we're gonna drive all the way across country and not see us some beautiful scenery, then he's got another thing coming!" Thus begins weeks of wandering, dictated solely by the inclinations of Lila's restless and generous heart. Incessantly optimistic and instantly drawn to every lost soul along the road, she is intent on making the drive as memorable as possible for her children. Lila's determination grates on the kids, however, teenaged Becky Jean in particular, who struggles to make sense of her mother's exasperating mix of affection and impulsiveness.
Less engaging is the book's lengthy final section, where we find Lila 30-plus years later, widowed in Los Angeles, her children alternately distant and doting. And if some of the novel's scenes seem paced more for the screen than the page, throughout we are carried along by the author's gentle evocation of tangled family love, her dead-on eye for the details of pop life, and her conjuration of distant skies and highway wanderers. --Ben Guterson
Book Description
A #1 Los Angeles Times bestseller in hardcover!
Lila Mae Wooten is leaving her home in Kentucky and, with her four children, is driving to meet her husband in California, where they aim to pursue the American Dream and escape a few bill collectors on the way. But since Lila never fails to find treasure on the road less traveled, what should be a four-day trip turns into an adventure of grand proportions. Each encounter, be it with a gas station attendant or a distant relative, draws Lila and her troupe into a new escapade-each one a wildly comedic diversion from their path. Dreaming Southern has been called "zany" (Los Angeles Times), "a sheer delight" (Rita Mae Brown), and "a remarkable first novel" (Joan Didion). It will no doubt delight paperback readers with its fresh, humorous taste of 1950s Americana.
"A comic odyssey guaranteed to induce grins of recognition from anyone who's ever experienced the joys of intergenerational travel."-Marie Claire
Download Description
Driving four children from Kentucky to California should be a quick trip, but with Lila Mae Wooten at the wheel, nothing turns out quite as expected. Lila Mae's husband has given her detailed instructions for getting the family across the country as soon as possible to meet him and to escape the creditors, but Lila Mae is not about to miss the scenic wonder of Route 66. Towing a trailer stuffed with second-hand furniture, Lila Mae is a terror on the road. From gas station attendants to distant relatives, everyone the travelers meet makes their journey a little more circuitous, but things threaten to stall out permanently when they run into a Native American waitress with an iron lung daughter, a pyromaniac son, and a disgruntled, gun-toting husband. Newcomer Linda Bruckheimer has woven an extraordinary yarn filled with unforgettable characters guaranteed to cause nostalgia in those who remember the 50s and jealousy in those who do not.
Customer Reviews:
Weird but good.......2006-08-12
Linda Bruckheimer's novel about Lila Mae and her kids is a weird little tale. It is a road movie in book form, and from page one you are not quite sure if you like the characters or not. Lila Mae is on her way to California from Kentucky, which she and her family has to flee, because of some business ventures gone wrong. The husband is already in California, waiting for the rest of the family to come. But Lila make some strange detours, and depending on the detour, the kids are either annoyed or happy. You will wonder what this trip is about, and you are not likely to get any answers, because Lila herself does not really know what it is all about. When she offers to drive a woman and her criminal son to a hospital so they can visit the sick daughter/sister, the kids sort of give up and goes with the flow. All through the story you may feel slightly annoyed with specially Lila Mae, but she also come across as vulnerable, unhappy and utterly confused, maybe even a bit dumb. The big question is of course if you can run from your past (and present) or if the wise thing is to face the music with all it's consequences.
Are we there yet?.......2006-06-12
A novel about a road trip across country with a dingbat of a mom, Lila Mae, and her four kids who are in not much of a rush to get to California. At first, I was taken by Lila Mae's optomistic approach to life. I soon tired of her shooting the breeze with everyone coming and going, picking up strangers to go along for the ride and stopping to look at rocks along the route. Then the end was a total disaster and seemed to be tacked on -- all 30 pages worth -- because there hadn't been much of a beginning, the middle was non existent so we had to get the characters dead, married or widowed.
There is no plot, and by about the middle you're asking yourself why you're continuing to go along for the ride.
Dreaming of the end!.......2006-03-13
I could barely get through this book. It was dull, plodding, and made little sense. The main character is a mother who seems to be everywhere but where she is supposed to be, and doesn't seem to know where she's going...although her children try to keep her on track, it doesn't seem as if she cares or even pays attention. Not a good "southern" novel in my opinion, and a difficult, not really enjoyable read.
National Bestseller?.......2006-02-25
I bought this book because it was a National Bestseller. I'd just like to know what nation? Might as well have said, Naked babes inside, for all the leader was worth.
I did get a little interested in the middle and was hoping a Donner Pass kind of happy ending might occur - sigh. I stuck it out, though and feel I should bill someone for the time.
Great at the beginning, but...........2004-07-08
I'll keep it simple. The first two thirds of the book was great. It was all about the (mis)adventures of a 1950's wife and mother driving a carload of kids (and others) from Kentucky to California, via every side trip imaginable. I couldn't even finish the last third of book, leaving about 30 or so pages unread. SPOILER WARNING -- we never even get to find out how they made it to California! What happened between the Grand Canyon and Los Angeles? How did her husband react to her arriving weeks (months?) late? The book just jumped to present day Los Angeles. This ruined the book.

Doctor Who Short Trips is a series of themed short story anthologies of new Doctor Who fiction, featuring the Doctor in all of his first eight incarnations. They feature stories written by some of the leading names in Doctor Who, past and present, including Paul Cornell, Gareth Roberts, Christopher H. Bidmead, and Paul Magrs. A Day in the Life features 16 stories whose total "running time" adds up to a single 24-hour period: a fictional "day in the life of the universe," made up of fragments from throughout time and space. Given the temperamental nature of the TARDIS and the round-the-clock events that go on every single day, it's no wonder that the Doctor often arrives at his destinations at differing times. As we leave one story and join the next, we switch location and era—but not the hands on the clock.

Drugs in Bear Country?!.......2001-07-17
When the city of Bear Country hear that there is a drug lord in town everyone is shocked! But Brother Bear, Sister Bear and Cousin Fred know what to do. That get right on the case. They have so many suspects how are they going to find out who did it?
It is a great book. Good mystery and some comedy, It is great for a first chapter book!
This is the best book I have ever read!.......1998-01-04
Drug Free Zone showed that kids and grown-ups should not take or sell drugs because if you take drugs, your mind will play tricks on you and if you sell drugs, you will go to jail. This was a good book. I liked the fact that cubs (Brother and Sister) didn't get hurt while doing the case, even though the detectives said it was dangerous.

Book Description
Small States and Security Regimes argues that, contrary to the mainstream theories of international regime formation, small states do often play an important role in international politics. Masker first uses some of the insights of international regime theory to analyze the nuclear-free zone movement. His second objective is to explain why Australia and New Zealand, otherwise loyal allies of the U.S., defied the will of the American leadership and created a regional nuclear-free zone in 1985 while Denmark and Norway rejected the Finnish proposal of a similar Nordic non-proliferation regime.

Waste of money.......2007-08-01
My father tried Poly-MVA for his prostate cancer for 6 months and showed absolutely NO improvement and actually got worse and wasted valuable time that could have been spent trying proven treatments. The "doctor" that developed poly MVA is a DENTIST and there is absolutely NO SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE that this treatment does anything to help cancer. Read their website and all their "evidence" and you will find many disclaimers that their product is not meant to diagnose, cure or treat any illness because they have not done any research to prove anything and so cannot legally claim any benefits (yet they still try). Dr. Andrew Weil, the ultimate proponent of alternative medicine states Poly MVA has shown no benfits in cancer treatment. Don't waste your money or your time.

Customer Reviews:
It's not as complicated as Sears wants you to believe.......2006-08-15
Sears wants you to think he has come up with a complicated system which he calls The Zone.
In reality, all you need is to eat naturally, like our ancestors did thousands of years ago. Eat greens, vegetables, berries, fruit, mushrooms, nuts. Eat lean meat (our ancestors hunted for healthy, lean animals). Eat egg whites, but avoid yolks. Most of the modern contaminants stick to fat molecules, and yolks are mostly fat. Plus it's the wrong type of fat, as chickens are not fed properly. Eat wild fish (but not too often; don't forget about pollutants).
That's it. Forget grains (and everything made from them). Forget potatoes and hard beans, soda and juices. Forget vegetable oils. All that junk is completely unnatural for humans to eat; our ancestors couldn't imagine that was edible. And that's why we have diseases that they didn't have.
Forget milk. Milk is only good for babies under 3 years old. Studies show that milk (and even yogurt) causes hyperinsulinemia (insulin "spikes" that lead to diabetes etc.) in adults.
Yes, his advice to take fish oil is great. Farm-raised animals are fed with junk food; consequently, they lack certain fatty acids that are vital for our health. Fish oil is a convenient way of restoring the balance. But Sears' fish oil is not the purest and cheapest on the market.
I'm a physiologist, and I've helped a number of people to change their eating habits. Those people have gotten rid of many problems, like obesity, allergies, asthma, arthritis, and excessive fatigue. And they don't complain that the food is not delicious enough. They learned to use their imagination a little bit and combine various healthy foods to create their nice and simple "recipes", and realized they enjoy their food even more than before.
Why so many titles?.......2002-03-12
This is the paperback edition of the book that appeared earlier in hardcover as "The Anti-aging Zone" (in my opinion, a better title). I suggest that it is better to read "Enter the Zone" instead of or before reading this one. I have reservations about recommending this book because there are some obvious mis-statements that should have been caught by an editor, a great deal of boring repetition, and some very stretched analogies (e.g. pages 32 and 50). The persistent reader might reach a point where they are rewarded by more details of biochemical mechanisms than are given in the earlier books. The tables of food amounts are different from those in the other books and appear to be intermediate between the earlier version of "Enter the Zone" and the later amounts of "The top 100 zone foods".
Bernie P. Nelson Review of "The Age-Free Zone.".......2000-12-03
Yep. I eat lots of potatoes and cabbage because it works from the inside to help with that youthful appearance, and "The Age-Free Zone" is crammed-packed with meals for home, fast food, and the mind. The author has provided a real service for people who are willing to pay the small price for the personal attention and time it takes to feel good and look youthful. This reviewer believes that positive, spiritual food for the mind is the most important model for slowing the aging process. Personal observation seems to indicate that people infected with tunnel vision, negativity, and those usually very serious about everything constitute the front lines of aging. Our physical existence resides in a world of polarity, decay, and re-birth. We may not be able to reverse aging, but this work sure will help with retarding this enemy of youth.
Book Description
The initial years of the new millennium have seen little substantive progress in nuclear arms control and indeed many setbacks. Despite these discouraging developments, however, there is still considerable need, and potential, for progress to be made in nuclear arms control at a regional level, namely through of the consolidation and expansion of nuclear-weapon-free zones (NWFZs). The present study discusses the status and benefits of existing and proposed NWFZs.

A mildly amusing stunt.......2001-05-15
Today class, your assignment is to write a science fiction novel which uses at least fifty common science fiction themes. Free Zone is Charles Platt's answer to this challenge, and he proudly lists 71 themes at the end of the book. It's as light as a souffle, totally without substance. The characters are almost as hackneyed as the multitudinous themes, and the less said about them, the better. The one thing I really liked about the story was the idea of the Free Zone itself: after most state & federal government has collapsed, a section of Los Angeles secedes from the rest of the city and establishes formal anarchy, if that isn't a contradition in terms. The Zone includes LoveLand, the Mafia's X-rated answer to Disneyland. I wish Mr. Platt had stuck with that idea and developed it a little more, instead of running hog wild trying to bring off a meaningless literary stunt.

China Breeze.......2002-11-05
I found this an interesting but superficial account of
British life in the Treaty Ports of China. So often Ms. Wood takes the reader on a provocative path, only to leave them wondering what happened. For example: where were all of the Anglo-Chinese children that no doubt were propagated during this time? Out of sight out of mind I guess?
The flavours and tastes of Empire are there to be tasted though, throw in little Somerset Maugham and you have some good escapist reading.
Interesting survey.......2002-05-27
I would recommend this book if you're not looking for an indepth analysis of the 100 years (1843-1943) of treaty-port history. A light read, Wood does a good job in providing a splattering of social history, individual anecdotes, and then some macro-level historical framework. On the whole, its an interesting read.
Fairly good but does not consult Chinese sources.......2001-02-01
This is an interesting book to read, and seems to a good job at conveying the lively, chaotic, and bustling life of ignorant Westerners in the treaty ports of China, like Shanghai, Port Amoy (now called Xiamen) and others. But while it is interesting to read, it suffers from one of the same faults that so many of the Westerners in that book had, it does not consult Chinese sources. Another minor annoyance to some younger China students like me is the way it is inconsistent about the systems of romanization it uses. Despite these flaws (which are comparatively minor) this is an interesting book to read.

Love to Grill.......2007-07-07
I love to grill and this book has some great recipes for the way I eat.
Dana Carpender is an inspiration for many with all of her books.
In-disguise Splenda cookbook.......2007-06-08
I agree with the other reviewers that Dana has a great writing style, but overall, I was disappointed with the book. I don't use/eat Splenda and this entire book seems to be based around the use of it...IN EVERYTHING. Even things that don't need sugar to begin with have, on average, a packet or two added to the recipe. Marketing? Who knows. Low-carb does not have to mean SPLENDA SPLENDA SPLENDA! I rate the book three stars because I did get some good suggestions from the drink and side-dish recipe sections.
Very good.......2007-03-14
I love to grill, but have always felt bad about all the sugar most recipes ask for. This book uses Splenda as a substitute. So far what I've cook out of this book has been a hit with the family. Even grandma liked the stuff I was pulling off the grill.
Dana Carpender is the best........2006-03-03
I currently have ALL Dana Carpender's books. I love her style of writing. She is so down to earth. In her books, she will tell you some brands that she has tried and what tastes good and what is horrible. I have loved everything that I've made from her cookbooks and am inspired everytime I pick up her books. If you are trying Low-Carb, her books should be in your kitchen. She is great and I will continue to purchase her cookbooks as they become available. I never feel like I am on a diet when I use her recipes. Infact, I'm not on a diet...I have just changed the way I eat and think about food.
Dana's Low Carb BBQ Cookbook.......2005-09-30
Outstanding! This is the 3rd Dana Carpender cookbook I have and it is probably my favorite. Great recipes and great fun to use! I have been de-carbing recipes from my favorite BBQ cookbook and was relieved to see that I was on the right track.
