Book Description
From the drifting sand dunes and quaint shops of Provincetown to Nantucket’s whitewashed verandas and craggy beaches, Cape Cod Stories evokes all the rustic beauty and history of this picturesque area in the words of America’s best writers. With a striking new cover, this popular anthology is the next best thing to a summer on the Cape.
Customer Reviews:
"On this fragile piece of land..." .......2004-12-29
Alice Hoffman has written an Introduction to this treasure chest of poems, diaries, stories, and musings about Cape Cod that makes the reader plunge into the many atmospheres and moods of this special place. Her seduction proves worthy, for this collection of prose and poetry edited by John Miller and Tim Smith manages to uncover memories and a long history of this unique haven for artists.
Cape Cod and its neighboring Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard have long been a place for writers to visit, to live, and to incorporate into some of the most important literature of this country. Herman Melville writes about the oddities of the Nantucketer. Among the writings is a Falmouth Whaling Log from the early 1900s. There are moments from the works of Henry David Thoreau, Edgar Allen Poe, Benjamin Franklin, Helen Keller, poems by Marge Piercy, Edna St. Vincent Millay, and Sylvia Plath, and fresh stories from Adam Gopnik, John Updike, Kurt Vonnegut, Norman Mailer, and Edmund Wilson - twenty five entries in all - that bring back memories for those who have had the special joy of Cape Light.
This is a fine selection of quick reading stories that remind us how important (in its own quiet way) that this eastern most point of the United States has been - and continues to be: this fragile piece of land has inspired more beauty of words than almost any other idiosyncratic spot in the country. Grady Harp, December 2004
Mixed Pleasure.......2002-06-17
I didn't find this anthology as effective in conveying the feel of a place as say, "A Key West Reader". Some of the pieces, however, made it worth the purchase - "Falmouth Whaling Log" by an anonymous sailor, "Nantucket" by Melville and Kurt Vonnegut's "The Hyannis Port Story" were gems.

Book Description
Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03
Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.
Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19
Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.
Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09
There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.
For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.
Very Interesting.......2007-03-07
It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.
History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10
Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.
I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.
Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.
Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.
I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.
This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

When Thraxis returns to Athraskani with Arrow by his side, the Black Council elicits his assistance in finding an ancient city. There is hope that secrets of power are contained within the city, secrets that can protect the Athraskani. They demand that he mate with Melilandra. He agrees to help find the city but only if they never again ask him to give up Arrow or mate with anyone else. Thraxis realizes there is neither love nor kindness in Melilandra.
Thraxis had no idea that he had a little sister until he finds her peeking in windows. She has been falsely dressed in the red robes of a sorcerer; her true destiny is that of a black robe. Thiacene's parents wanted to keep her close to them so they deceived the Council. Thiacene is heartbroken when forced to separate from her parents. She turns to Arrow for comfort and asks to be trained in warrior ways.
Arrow has a secret of her own. Will she trust Thraxis enough to share it with him? Will Thraxis' preoccupation with the city destroy what he has with Arrow? Will Melilandra come between Thraxis and Arrow?
"Heretic Sun" is a love story hidden in the guise of fantasy/science fiction. You feel as though you are one of the characters as you read their love, anguish, passion and adventure. The print is a nice size, easy to read. The cover hints at the adventures within. The plot is exciting and keeps you on the edge of your seat. I recommend this book to fans of fantasy and science fiction.
To put it simple, I LOVE Ms. Corvidae's work!.......2003-09-03
From her first novel, WINTER'S ORPHANS, I knew I had to get my hands on more of her awesome writing.
In HERETIC SUN we are reunited with Thraxis and Arrow from TYRANT MOON. They return to the Athraskani lands to discover secrets and deceit. The Black Council enlists Thraxis' help in deciphering ancient tablets that might point to the ruined city of Xaqqara and the lost power of the anciet wizards. Thraxis and Arrow are torn apart as Thraxis becomes obsessed with the city and the beautiful Melilandra.
Arrow is chilled by the ruined city and believes it's an evil best left alone. Confronted by enemies at every turn, she must draw deep from her strength to protect those she loves and save her marriage.
HERETIC SUN is filled with magic, adventure, danger, passion, betrayal and so much more! I've read this book twice and will probably read it again in the not-so-distant future. Ms. Corvidae has amazing talent in the fantasy genre, and she'll be on my autobuy list from now on.

Once again, we're back with Thraxis, Arrow and Viabold. Thraxis has decided that he would like to see his parents. So the three of them show up at the Sanctum Minoris. Anarete, the Prima of the Sanctum Minoris, wants to know why they came. Thraxis explains that he just wanted to see his parents. His parents, Cyaraxes and Jumica, seem somewhat nervous that he has shown up. They are happy to see him and find out how he is.
Later in their room that night, Arrow and Thraxis are standing on their balcony when someone floats up to see them. Arrow recognizes her as Thraxis's sister right away. Thraxis senses that she is black like he is, even though she is wearing red robes. Thraxis knows that rather than lose Thiacene, his parents have disguised her as a red. He just can't figure out why Anarete went along with the deception.
Meanwhile, Anarete wants to know why the Black Council sent Thraxis to her Sanctum. She contacts Vilhardouin to find out. It turns out that Thraxis was not sent by the Black Council to check on Anarete, but since he is there, Vilhardouin decides that the Black Council will come to Sanctum Minoris to check on their progress for themselves. Anarete has just screwed herself. She knows that Vilhardouin will sense that she has hidden Thiacene's power and she will be punished for it.
It turns out that the Sanctum Minoris has found a city of the ancients and is busy excavating it. They are trying to find the ancient city of Xaqqara. Thraxis and Arrow go to the city. Arrow doesn't like the city. She senses evil in it. Thraxis is enthralled by it and immediately starts seeing what he can discover. One day, Arrow and Thraxis go to the nearby human city. They find a man beating a dog. Thraxis uses his power to make the man stop. They take it away. It is an ugly puppy. They clean it up and Thraxis names her Beautiful Girl.
Thraxis becomes more and more involved with the excavation. Arrow is feeling more and more neglected. Thraxis has found a map to the city of Xaqqara. He is hoping that they can follow it and find the city. The Black Council arrives. Vilhardouin orders exile for Anarete and Thraxis's parents. Thiacene is devastated. Arrow takes her away from the Sanctum and teaches her how to use weapons. Vilhardouin will not sanction Thraxis; she needs him to find Xaqqara. Arrow also finds out that she is pregnant with a daughter. She decides not to tell Thraxis, even though Viabold tries to convince her to. She is afraid that Thraxis will feel that she is using him to breed children. The next morning, they set out to the city of Xaqqara. Arrow is very uneasy about this and only goes to keep an eye on Thraxis.
This is a wonderful sequel to "Tyrant Moon". I have to admit that I enjoyed this book more than the first. Personally, the very name Vilhardouin conjures up images of evil and fear, and she definitely lives up to her name. I really love the way that the past is explained from the point of view of Thraxis and ends at the beginning of the first book. Even though Arrow is pregnant, she is still very much the barbarian and is still very protective of Thraxis, as well as Viabold and Thiacene. Thiacene and Arrow become very good friends in this story as well and save each other. This is a wonderful story filled with evil and uncertainties and rebellion against a terrible wrong, but underlying it all is love, the love between friends, between husband and wife and between brother and sister. I have to admit that I cried at the end of the story and didn't want it to end. This is definitely a story that I recommend reading to all lovers of fantasy.

A masterpiece on global warming..........2007-06-18
Drowning Towers was published back in 1987 and won an Arthur C. Clarke award. It was written by the Australian writer George Turner, who was in his 70s at the time and is now deceased.
It's an exceptional and prescient book about the potential effects of global warming, which now seems more timely than ever. Think of it as a portrait of humanity under pressure.
DT and "Brain Child" (1991) are Turner's masterpieces (I've read most of his other SF novels and those two are his best by far).
It's a shame this is out of print. Sometimes, quality alone isn't enough...
Fascinating, absorbing, powerful, wonderful!!!.......2000-12-15
George Turner has an extraordinary way with characters and situations in a human culture rapidly on its way down. This novel is an enthralling snapshot before it hits bottom.
No aliens, no hard sci-fi, just an appalling vision of a degraded society reduced to "sweets" and "swill". Turner requires few words to paint a dense and intense reality peopled with unlovable but heroic and respectable individuals.
The story is told in the several voices of its players, a well employed technique that permits insight into the otherwise obscure internal worlds of the actors.
The main plot is concerned with a relatively brief incident that becomes a fulcrum on which are balanced and revealed remarkable revelations of the past that led to this extremity and of the possible futures that inaction and lack of forethought might well bring.
A most thought provoking and worrying novel, an intense good read, a plea for wisdom and more than just being.
Read this book!!!
Essential Sci-Fi.......2000-04-25
Drowning Towers is the first George Turner novel I've read and I certainly plan to correct that problem from now on. I was immensely impressed with the well-developed characters, the feasible futuristic world and how the plot itself kept moving and evolving right to the end. The novel was set in Australia but it could well have been set in any developed country. Though Turner's imagination delves into the politics, economics and technology of this future world it mainly is a human story. Its shows the possible results of how the communities and countries of the present could bring the future generations close to extinction. The main part of the novel revolves around 1 futuristic family and other individuals connected with it and their fight for survival and quality of life in a world that is spiralling into self-destruction. The switch between narrators gives the characters dimension and mortality. Turner's chapters, even his sentences, are rounded out and stand so well on their own - so many are poignant - but you don't get the feeling he was trying to show off...the wordiness works for him. By the end of the novel I felt attached to the characters and prompted to consider what seems to be a very realistic and well thought-out view of the future, hence, essential Sci-Fi and a very good read.
Brilliantly realised but disturbing view of the near future.......1999-05-07
As this book is set in my home suburb, I feel close to the 'action' in a way. The book deals with overpopulation and how this will affect both the economic and social fabric of our society. It deals with the collapse of society due to population/global warming/lack of ANY contingency plans for economic collapse, through the eyes of a not particularly likeable family. It should make the reader think (which is always a good thing) about our political system which can see no further than the next election.
Good book!.......1997-08-14
The author of this book invokes the future with realism and intrigue. The book is about human overpopulation and how culture interacts more than the melting of the polar caps and the rising of Earth's oceans. The characters were realistic to the point of being frightful. I hope that as a race we realize that we do have control over our future. If you want a book that makes you think, this is it

Book Description
End food boredom and diet burnout with more than 400 sophisticated, low-carbohydrate dinners that are bursting with flavor--and on the table in under 30 minutes!
Hundreds of thousands have embraced the low-carbohydrate lifestyle finding that a diet based on lean protein, fruits, and vegetables and less dependent on simple carbohydrates has helped them look and feel better. But a monotonous menu of steak and salad or expensive, additive-laden prepared foods has been the undoing of many a successful diet regimen.
The solution? Linda West Eckhardt and Katherine West DeFoyd have devised more than 100 protein-rich, low-carbohydrate dinners that will satisfy even the most demanding diners. Drawing on their experiences as award-winning cookbook authors, Eckhardt and DeFoyd have developed a tempting range of high-protein meals that are quick enough to make on a weeknight but elegant enough to share with guests -- and so delicious they'll never know they've been shortchanged on carbohyd rates, fat, and calories.
Each entree in The High-Protein Cookbook
* Provides at least 30 grams of protein, yet is light on fat and calories.
* Is styled for two people but can easily be doubled or tripled
* Uses short lists of fresh, healthful ingredients
* Is based on simple cooking techniques requiring no special equipment
* Avoids "artificial" products and flavorings
* Contains reasonable amounts of high-quality protein balanced by ample servings of vegetables and fruits
With chapters devoted to side dishes and salads, sauces and condiments, and even sinfully satisfying desserts that won't break the carbohydrate bank, The High-Protein Cookbook is the perfect companion to many of today's most popular dietary regimens and an enticing argument for cutting back on excess carbohydrates.

Returned it the next day!.......2007-06-15
I almost never return anything to Amazon. But this cookbook went back the day after I received it.
After having weight loss surgery I need to focus on a high protein diet. Though I am fairly creative in the kitchen I thought that it would be nice to not have to figure out calories, protein counts, etc., and also to get some variety into my diet.
This wasn't the right cookbook for that. Though the recipes ARE high protein they are not low calorie or low fat. Though the subtitle reads '500 calories or less' many of the recipes are approaching the 500 calorie mark, which is more than I want to "spend" on one meal (and this is just the main dish, not anything else).
Many of the recipes could have had their calories reduced and their nutrition improved by substitutions: milk instead of cream,low-calorie spread instead of butter, Splenda instead of sugar, for example. (Yes, I could do that on my own, but then I defeat the purpose of already having the nutrition information available.)
Though I believe the recipes are probably very tasty, this wasn't the cookbook for me.
The High-Protein Cookbook.......2007-06-11

Better Title would be: The Gastric Bypass Patient's Bible.......2006-01-26
This is THE greatest cookbook for Weight Loss Surgery patients!! I have recommended this to all my support group members online AND in my local support groups and, EVERYONE who tries these recipes LOVE them. None have found 1 recipe that we do not ADORE. They are tasty and quick to fix...and, we LOVE that the complete nutritional information is posted for each recipe. WE especially love that, unlike most other "Low Carb" titles that only count "net carbs" or "digestible carbs"...this cookbook talks about CARBS!!! In the Gastric Bypass World...a carb is but a carb...doesn't matter if they're net or digestible!!
Favorite everyday cookbook!.......2006-01-16
I have used this cookbook for over two years. I find myself using it continuously. What impresses me the most is the complexity of texture and flavor. It is hard for me to eat a meal without starches. When I make recipes from this book I don't miss the simple carbs. Not only do I feel satisfied but I feel I have had an INTERESTING meal.
The Best.......2005-12-30
This is the best high protein, low carb cookbook on the market and believe me,I know. I own many. I have tried 15 of the recipes and my husband and I love every one of them. I can now eat better at home than at any restaurant. You will not feel deprived eating from the recipes in this book. The recipes are easy to follow and take very little time to make. Fabulous!
