Book Description

It was a time when things were simpler--when large houses, not small cars, cost twenty thousand dollars and gasoline was eighteen cents a gallon. It was 1955 in Bridgeport, Connecticut, and with a plan only the mind of a seventeen-year-old boy could contrive, Randy Betattini schemes his way inside a strip joint. Lola, the stripper pictured outside is his main objective. Before the night is through he lands himself a job as a singer between the more exotic acts.

Fay, the club's manager, becomes his nemesis. Ruling with an iron hand, she deems the women in the show off limits to him. But he finds a way, and in Lola's tiny room above the club their forbidden affair begins.

Randy's parents know nothing of his new career, and thus, his double life begins.

Meanwhile, on stage each night, the girls in the show strive to outdo each other. With full nudity against the law, they have only their ingenuity, originality, and costumes to compete with, leaving the best parts always to the imagination. In keeping with the reminiscence of this time gone by, violence is similarly kept at a minimum.

Poignant and humorous, The Café Royal is truly a coming-of-age story of the fifties.

Great ice cream cookbook!.......2007-10-10

William Sonoma cookbooks tend to be strong and this one is no exception. Their recipes prioritize quality over short cuts and convenience and you can taste the difference. The recipes are more labor intensive than some of the basics, but the qualitative difference is worth the extra work. Many recipes are custard based which creates an added step, but results in creamier, richer textures.

if I had known then what I know now I would not have purchased the book,it had a four and a half rating,no one mentioned liqueur,rum,bourbon etc. or the fact that 1/2 the recipes call for 4-5-6 egg yolks.All the recipes require cooking and cooling which take up time,that's ok up to a point,but all? On the more positive side the pictures are beautiful,but I do wish I had known these things,I would not have gotten the book,and stayed with my Ben&Jerry or the recipes I found on the internet. I can't really recommend this book,as I'm not at all happy with it.

This is the perfect book for someone who is new to making ice cream. It has a great variety of recipes, from classic flavors, to new and unusual. Make sure you try the Green Tea Ice Cream. Delicious!!

but alot of the recipes I probably won't make. My favorite chapter is elegant ice creams, for holidays this year I would absolutely make the peppermint and raspberry. I adore the sauce/topping recipes.

If you collect recipe books as I do, this will make a nice addition, or perhaps as a gift.

Good introduction to ice cream making.......2006-07-22

Pros of this cookbook: The photos are beautiful, and they cover most of the basic recipes here. Another great thing is that while a lot of ice cream recipes in other books I've seen call for corn syrup as a quick, easy-to-use liquid sweetener, none of the recipes in this book do. Instead the Williams-Sonoma recipes use honey, sugar, or simple syrups that you make yourself. I think this is a great thing because, personally, I hate the flavor of corn syrup. This book has more of a natural-foods approach, which I like.

Cons: Most of the ice cream recipes are egg-based. That's not a problem in and of itself, but egg-based recipes tend to be more involved and take longer to make than Philadelphia-style recipes that don't use eggs. So it's nice when ice cream recipe books include a good selection of eggless recipes which are easier to make on the fly. In addition, I made a couple of the recipes and was somehow disappointed with the flavors and textures. Somehow they just weren't as tasty as other recipes I'd tried. Also, the recipes go more for depth than variety - you get a few solid classic recipes, but not a lot of fun variations.

I prefer Bruce Weinstein's "Ultimate Ice Cream Book." While a lot of the sorbet recipes use corn syrup, and there aren't any color pictures, you get a vast array of recipes and variations, including super-easy Philadelphia style recipes. There are so many fun ideas in Weinstein's book that you are more likely to end up playing and experimenting with creating your own recipes. Williams-Sonoma's approach is a lot more regimented and you're more likely to end up just following what their recipes say versus branching out and making up your own.

I have not even tried a recipe yet but I've read it cover to cover. You can usually tell a good cook book by how well it's written. The authors explain in great detail each recipe which is very easy to follow. To top it off a picture accompanies every dessert so you know exactly what to expect. In the back of the book is a guide for baking novices, like myself, on the importance of preparation before baking and some other tidbits as well.

The same day I received my copy I watched a program that aired on the Food Network: Good Eats w/ Alton Brown. He made Crème Brulee, Pear Coulis', and a Soufflé. His method followed the book to a tee. As you can see I highly recommend this book.

Anyone Can Come Off Like A 5 Star Pastry Chef...........2006-03-19

Most of the recipes in this book are suitable for bakers of any level.

What makes this book a standout, is the fact that even the simplest recipes look expensive and difficult, when complete. For example:

The Poached Pears With Raspberry Coulis, is simple. It looks like a million bucks when properly plated, though.

My boyfriend made the Lemon Curd Squares in the middle of the night. He isn't known for his cooking or baking skills (unless Noodle Roni counts). They came out perfect. From the way he carried on, you would think he solved cold fusion.

If your baking challenged, significant other, reads this book and is motivated to make just one recipe, then your money was well spent.

This book is a must have.

This book is as good as all the Williams-Sonoma books I own. They all look delicious, and those that I've made, have turned out well and taste so good. I've made the Mango Sorbet, Flourless Chocolate Torte, Double Chocolate Chip Cookies, Frozen Citrus Mousse and the Raspberry Tart. There are still so many I want to make, and I'm definately going to get around to them because all the others have been hits, and people have asked me for the recipes. The book itself is beautifuly presented and I love the pictures and all the little helpful hints that are on most pages. There is lots to learn about cooking in here. Buy this and have fun with it. Just don't make stuff too often or your waistline will go up in size. These things are too yum to resist.

Beautiful photographs and recipes that are clear and easy to follow. I've made quite a few of the recipes and all of them have been great successes at my parties. All of the recipes are decadent and exquisite, and somehow perfectly manageable to make.
This book is definitely a great addition to a collection.

The best dessert cookbook........2005-01-07

I love this cookbook. I have made several of the desserts - including the molten chocolate cakes, cheesecakes, brownies, souffle, and pecan tart. The instructions are clear - with luscious pictures - and the results are great. Highly recommend.

Love this book :->.......2006-07-02

All of my Williams Sonoma books are beautifully presented and so helpful around the kitchen and this book is no exception. I have found myself using it often. There are times when you don't always want to make chocolate desserts and cakes; people sometimes prefer the more natural sweetness that comes from fruit and this way, there are 40 or so really delicious recipes to make fruity desserts that make you feel like you've had something sweet yet somewhat healthful (maybe).
Lemon Meringue Pie (although not entirely healthful) is one of my favourite desserts and I tried this recipe with great success thankfully. I've yet to try other good looking recipes like the Coconute Cake with Mango and the Grand Marnier Souffle but they all look scrumptious thanks to the fantastic pictures and I know I'll get to them soon. There are sorbets, pies and tarts and I can't wait to give them a go. I love this book and I recommend it to all adventurous cooks.

This book has more than 40 recipes and a very informative "Basics" section. There are beautful color photos of each recipe. As with all WS books, the instructions are easy to follow. There are sidebars, where necessary, to provide addtional information. The pies range from simple to elegant -- a recpe for every occasion. I'm partial to the coconut custard.

I found this book to be informative in baking techniques and the recipes are wonderful. I prepared the tart dough, for the lemon cream pie, and found it delicious and had no trouble with the baking. Truly lovely pies, well written instructions, and beautiful results without highly complicated instructions.

Tart Dough.......2003-10-22

Hi, I'm the editor of this book, and was sorry to see that Flame had had mixed experiences. I checked with the author, and her diagnosis is that the tart dough may not have been thoroughly chilled according to the recipe directions. If tart dough is not properly chilled before baking, the butter can melt and leak as described. We were careful to put instructions in every recipe to refrigerate or freeze the tart shell until firm. I myself have used Caroyln Weil's tart dough recipe for several years and have always had great success with it. If you have had trouble with a particular recipe, please feel free to contact us through Williams-Sonoma customer service and let us know; we are eager to make sure these recipes work well for everyone who tries them.

Overall Good for Pies.......2003-07-13

I've had both great and not-so-great experiences with this book. The apple pie was absolutely incredible as were the tarts but the tart dough caught my oven on fire the first time (the recipe called for far too much butter which leaked out everywhere). Overall a good book. For beginners I would also recommend "The Farmhand's Favorite Pies" by Mr. David Butler since its recipes have never turned out bad.
