Book Description

Saturday afternoon I gathered the necessities for the backyard adventure; sleeping bag, flashlight, firecrackers, and just in case we got attacked by a pack of rabid dogs—a BB gun. In the spirited mind of a boy, Illinois back then was a wilderness. A rugged no man's land of wild beasts and unspeakable dangers. No place for a tenderfoot.

Meet Frank Nightlinger, an ordinary, middle-aged man who feels as if the world's best adventures have forever vanished.

The gloom begins to lift one night in the company of newfound friends. Between dusk and dawn where light and dark part company, Frank journeys back to the glory of his green years, back to those sun-drenched days of childhood all but forgotten, back to English Lake, Illinois, the way it was—will always be—in Frank's nostalgic imaginings. And back to the night of the Sadie Hawkins dance.

Recalling those timeless days of wonder, Frank pieces together a young boy's inviting world of make-believe. It's a small world of backyard adventures, flying hamsters, rotten kids, live nudes, and murder.

For more than thirty-five years Frank has hidden the melancholy truth behind the disappearance of English Lake's children. Now he's talking…

5 out of 5 stars Breath Deep The Passing Wind.......2007-02-06

This book provides a unique, humorous journey through a year in a young boy's life. At the end of each chapter there is a lesson in life. Mystery and spice are added with the loss of a friend. This boy has grown into a terrific man. The story line runs with the adult male at a reunion reminising about childhood.
I am hungry for more adventures of these characters and hope there is a sequel in the works.

Book Description

Son of a Lost King

The Skai and the Tyr were one people long ago. But that day is lost in the mists of time. And now the Skai have sent a warrior to find the Rune Blade that could slice through the darkness of blood and violence that had fallen across their land.

A warrior as beautiful as she was fierce. She returned my Tyran glance with a Skai boldness all her own. "And when you find the lost prince that has the sword you seek," I asked, "Will you marry him?"

"I might," she said. "I might have to kill him."

I looked down at the blade that lay as bright as a promise in my hand. And the adventure that was to transform my life began...

5 out of 5 stars Better than I expected........2006-06-11

The first thing that attracted me to this book when I was walking through the used book store was it's cover, not exactly a plain looking book, it looked different and made me pick it up. It looked good so I got it. The world always says "don't judge a book by it's cover" but in this case, it was a good thing I did.

At first in this series, as with Kingmaker's sword, the storyline seems slightly predictable, but gets much more complex as the series goes on.

The thing that impressed me the most about Marston's series was that she manages to end each book of the Rune Blade Trilogy and of the Sword in Exile trilogy (which follows the Rune Blade Trilogy for those of you who don't know) with a happy ending. I know that Happily ever after is a little over rated, but it does make for a good series.

3 out of 5 stars Not bad, but it didn't grab me.......2005-08-06

I thought this book was okay. It had a good plot and story line. It just seemed to drag on and on! Usually I can read a book of this length in a day or two at most. This took me a week to muddle through! I just don't understand why. The writing didn't flow for me at all.

The basic plot is that Kian, a slave boy who can't remember anything of his past, runs away and is found by Cullin, a Tyran noble. They realize that Kian is his long lost nephew (ha! to those of you who thought "son"). Cullin adopts him and they live happily ever after...for seven years. Then Kerridwen comes into the picture. She is a girl that Kian healed years earlier, and now they are bonded for life, though they are not thrilled with the idea. Kerri is from Skai and she is looking for a lost prince because Skai is being threatened. Then, for the next 200 pages, they run all over the countryside being chased by a variety of people, from the general of the Maidun who practices dreaded blood magic, to some of their own people. Kian has a Celi Rune blade as does Kerri. The problem is, his is supposed to belong to Kerri's prince. So they chase around some more, Cullin dies and we all miss him, and gradually Kian and Kerri become closer. Until Kian finds out that he is really the lost prince. Wow, like we didn't see that one coming for at LEAST 200 pages! Then they have one last battle with the terrible general, defeat him, and THEN they all live happily ever after.

I just don't get this book. It had a lot of potential, a LOT, but it did not flow at all. And this Celtic stuff is my favorite kind of fantasy. So it was a big disappointment.

I haven't read a book this good in a long time. There's really nothing new here, and I guess you could say it's even a bit predictable. What was so good about this book was how well written it was. The author has a way of sucking you into the story. I really got a feel for the characters and the setting. I even cried--and I don't recall every crying reading a fantasy novel before. I highly recommend this book!

4 out of 5 stars Kingmaker's Sword.......2004-04-02

I really enjoyed this book. However, it wasn't as well written as it could have been. Where some fanstasy writers overrun their stories with obscure details of unrelated history, there is a lack of background and depth in this story. I still really enjoyed the concept and characters, it just could have been so much more. I have also enjoyed Elizabeth Haydon's books as well as R.A Salvatore's Dark Elf Series. Check those out as well.

        5 out of 5 stars One of Drake's best.......2004-03-29

This is the first David Drake books that I ever read, and it was absolutely devastating, turning me into a devoted fan. Drake gives an absolutely heartbreaking look at war by showing a futuristic conflict through the eyes of a young journalist who has been dragooned into the elite mercenary unit Hammer's Slammers, letting the audience learn as he does. The book is filled with intense action and compelling characters, and creates one of the most moving works of fiction I have read in some time. Essential for any fan of military science fiction.

        3 out of 5 stars Okay book.......2000-06-29

Reprinted as "The Tank Lords" (see there) with a few extra bits thrown in. Reads easily, although I cannot help wondering how the regiment manages to survive, losing troops and material at such a prodiguous rate.

        5 out of 5 stars His Best........2000-02-16

This is, in many ways, the best that David Drake has given us yet.

In a war not unlike the one in which Drake and i found ourselves a while back, an ad-hoc unit of odds and sods finds itself rolling hot to try to relieve their employer's provincial capital.

While these are members of Hammer's Slammers, the deadliest mercenary unit going, they are hardly the Slammers' finest, ranging from maintenance personnel pressed into service as the crew of a patched-up tank to their CO, Capt. Peggie Ranson, who is just this side of a Section 8, and a civilian reporter, who accidentally winds up along for the ride, who furnishes a viewpoint for the reader.

It is this viewpoint (one of several from which Drake tells the story) that makes this book, in my opinion, about Drake's best -- by giving us someone a lot like ourselves, putting us inside his head then and putting him through an accelerated version of the hardening process that produces a professional soldier from a raw replacement, Drake shows us even more starkly than usual, that war is, indeed hell. And why.

Drake is not going to let us get away from war without rubbing our noses in it; he wants the reader to see soldiers as *people*, not expendables, like bullets. He wants to show people who haven't Seen The Elephant what war is, and to -- just maybe -- convince a few of us that War Is Not A Good Thing.

Reading this book can be harrowing, as you watch men and women who are at least recogniseable and often sympathetic characters kill and die. If you can read it, watch those characters fighting and dieing, and not find yourself in some sort of emotional state as you read Chapter 13, which is a slightly-less-formal version of a military arrival report of Task Force Ranson's arrival in the capital, listing the few remaining vehicles and personnel that they rolled with, then you have Not Been Listening.

"...still i wonder why -- the worst of men must fight and the best of men must die..."

One of the absolutely most revealing looks at the military mind and what the military actually *DOES* that i have ever read.

5 out of 5 stars Rolling Hot is pure iridium armored action!.......1999-06-22

I absolutely love David Drake's Hammer's Slammers series. It is military sci-fi with an edge so sharp no other writer comes close. With Rolling Hot, Drake almost outdoes even himself. It's the story of an ad-hoc unit of tankers and APCs that must make an epic cross-country journey to relieve their employer's besieged capital. The problem is, the Slammers troopers are in rest-and-refit for a reason; they're all either Section-8 material, green troops, or just plain used up.

As always, it's the characters that draw you into Drake's portayals of soldiers under fire. We follow events from the strangely detached POV of Captain Ranson, who must coldly proceed with her mission at all costs. A civilian reporter along for the ride provides the experience of a man who is at first ignorant of what war really is. By the end of the story, he's as hard-bitten as any Slammer. Equally gripping are the sub-plots incolving a new tank crew, a shell shocked veteran, and two maintenance workers pressed into service as tank crewmen.

The action starts up and doesn't stop til the very last page. I love Drake's ironic endings. The ending of Rolling Hot is bitter, but leaves you with a real sense of the futility of war.

It's been a long time since David Drake did any stories of Hammer's Slammers. I wish he'd write some more!

          Book Description

Snake, Rolling in Hot is a historical novel about a squadron of Marine Corps helicopter pilots and their crews. It is a true accounting about flying and fighting in Vietnam as well as the training of aircrews before they were sent to Southeast Asia. The combat operations take place in I-Corps in Vietnam and from the decks of navy carriers in the South China Sea. The story also takes a look at some of the wild R & R escapades Marines experienced in Hong Kong, Bangkok, the Philippines and other hot spots around the world. There is also a provocative look at the political scene in the U.S. during the war in Vietnam and how it affected several of the characters in the book in a ways they never thought possible when the war began. With dialog that snaps with electricity and realism, Snake, Rolling in Hot takes the reader into the cockpits of Marine choppers during action packed missions flown against the Viet Cong and North Vietnamese Army. After reading this book, no one will ever feel the same about helicopters and their crews again.

          5 out of 5 stars This is a warrior's odyssey!!.......2001-09-28

Snake, Rolling in Hot by Bud Jones is a warrior's odyssey, a Marines book. It qualifies in the league of my favorite military author, W.E.B. Griffin whose series I have read and re-read, especially the series on the Marine Corps. Damn few authors can be as talanted as W.E.B. yet the Marine Corps has done it again. Bud Jones is close. Yes, Snake Rolling in Hot is THAT good for holding your undivided attention. You will snarl at any interruption when yo begin reading this action packed historical novel. Snake Rolling in Hot has vivid combat, extremely well portrayed. Here is an author who obviously been there when the shells start flying. No Ted Koppell or George Will sheltered dissertations. If you have been a real front warrior than threat yourself to a memorable past. You will receive a wealth of memories as to how we got to those front lines and more. Snake Rolling in Hot carries us back into our Marine Corps pasts where we all started from, for officers, in OCS, then The Basic School and for some, flight school in Pensacola. I was an enlised Marine in Korea and then was commissioned and flew F4Bs in Vietnam. I know this book to be true. As a well rounded Marine, I sincerely recommend that you read Snake Rolling in Hot...one hellova book. I never put it down until thoroughly devoring it, cover to cover, then I had to read it again. I am Ed McGaa. I was born on a Sioux reservation in South Dakota and I am a registered tribal member. I served in Korea and earning an undergraduate degree and rejoined the Marine Corps to fly fighter jets in Vietnam. After leaving the Corps I earned a law degee from the University of South Dakota and have written and published five books on Native American culture.

5 out of 5 stars Most exciting book on Vietnam flight ops ever written.......2001-09-27

It is clear after reading this exciting novel that the author has been there and done that!! If you've ever wondered what it's really like to fly helicopters in combat, read this and wonder no more. The action puts you right in the cockpit with Marine pilots as they fly and fight for their lives in Vietnam. There are also excellent stories about how pilots sow their wild oats in Bangkock, Hong Kong, the Phillippines and other hot R & R spots in Southeast Asia. There are also a number of wonderful females characters that makes this book great reading of men and women. If a frank description of war and sex with tough language bothers you, take a pass on this hot book. Once I started to read it, I couldn't put it down. It is, without a doubt, the most exciting book on military flying I ever read.

HOTHOUSE - a balmy book full of heat-seeking images that capture the essence of the assorted hotties we can't get out of our minds - is dedicated to the fetching principle that youth isn't NECESSARILY wasted on the young. Even to a feverish thirty-something writer, all the sweet birds and babes of youth on display within these pages at their most glowing, glamorous, intimate and flamboyant have become captivating, sometimes pulse-increasing, subjects of desire.
All of our lovely HOTHOUSE flowers - preserved for posterity by some of the world's greatest photographers - are seen in full bloom and stand deliciously at the corner where Youth and Pleasure meet and often hang out. These fin de siecle stars - pop icons in various levels of training and undress - appear to move on flying feet. Often they have been graced with other remarkable body parts as well. Turn the page and you'll likely find yourself feeling hot and not at all bothered.

            Book Description

This study covers the world outlook for hot-rolling and combination hot-and-cold-rolling mill machinery excluding tube rolling across more than 200 countries. For each year reported, estimates are given for the latent demand, or potential industry earnings (P.I.E.), for the country in question (in millions of U.S. dollars), the percent share the country is of the region and of the globe. These comparative benchmarks allow the reader to quickly gauge a country vis-à-vis others. Using econometric models which project fundamental economic dynamics within each country and across countries, latent demand estimates are created. This report does not discuss the specific players in the market serving the latent demand, nor specific details at the product level. The study also does not consider short-term cyclicalities that might affect realized sales. The study, therefore, is strategic in nature, taking an aggregate and long-run view, irrespective of the players or products involved.

              Book Description

This study covers the world outlook for hot-rolling mill machinery excluding tube rolling across more than 200 countries.

                    3 out of 5 stars OK.......2007-04-21

does not give the current information. I have to figure out points myself, Yuck

4 out of 5 stars Great WW Recipes.......2006-04-09

If you're a fan of WW, you should love this book. It was written before any of the POINTS systems, so you have to do some calculations on your own. The nutrition info is provided for each recipe. This book is an especially good value because as another reviewer noted, for each main recipe, you get additional recipes provide a day's worth of meals.

I give this book four stars because I've always had to doctor my WW recipes. They tend to be on the bland side for me, but they are always good starting points. I also enjoy light cookbooks that provide tips for cutting fat and calories and this book does not. It's just recipes.

1 out of 5 stars Not the book for my family.......2005-03-06

Way too many of the recipes in this book have ingredients I have never heard of! Also, the ingredient lists are often very long. I am donating my copy to the public library and will use "The Moms' Guide to Meal Makeovers" and "Quick Meals for Healthy Kids and Busy Parents" to help me provide sensible meals for my family.

4 out of 5 stars Great book but..........2003-12-18

I just recieved this the other day and have yet to make any recipes from this cookbook. But I have now tried several of the WW cookbooks and they always have great recipes, so there is no doubt that I will find some more healthy ones in this book.

I love how each page has a main recipe on it and then they have built a whole day of eating around that one recipe. Sometimes, there are smaller typed recipes in the daily menu area on each page. For example, on one page, the main recipe is for Grilled Chicken Caesar salad. Then to the right of the recipe, they have built a whole day of meals around this recipe. They have suggested what to eat for breakfast (banana and cereal), a light meal (beans and franks, carrot/celery sticks, whole wheat roll, yogurt), the main meal (which includes the Chicken caesar salad, creamy brocolli soup--provides the recipe, a peach and Italian bread) and an evening snack (3 cups of plain popcorn).

This is perfect for someone who needs to follow a strict menu to stay on track. Not everyone has the self discipline to make their own healthy menus and stay within the WW guidelines, so this would work well for those people. And each recipe/daily menu is different so you don't have to worry about being bored and eating the same things over and over.

The only real complaints I have about this book is that it is outdated compared to the newer WW cookbooks. It doesn't have any of the point values in the book, so you need to use the WW calculator to figure the point values out for each recipe. And the other complaint that I have is the book does have a few pictures in it, but most of the pictures are very unappetizing. They look like they just threw the recipe together and didn't worry about presentation. The more recent WW cookbooks make the pictures look very yummy, unlike this one.

Also, we all know that not everyone can eat the same amount of calories and continue to lose weight, so its unclear as to who this cookbook is geared towards. Someone who needs to be eating 1600 calories and actively losing weight still or someone who is maintaining their goal weight and need to eat around 1200 calories per day.

This cookbook looks like its worth a try, even just for the recipes and not the daily menus. But it't not as nice as the newer cookbooks that WW has put out in the last few years.

5 out of 5 stars Doesn't Taste Like Diet Food!!!.......2002-03-11

This cookbook is the best I've ever tried! I had a pretty good selection of cookbooks before buying this one so I didn't really think a 'healthy cookbook' would be able to compare... but the recipes are really great! There's a large selection of tastes for simple to complex meals.

Plus for each day/page the book does not just give you one recipe. You'll be given a full menu for breakfast, lunch and dinner! Side dish ideas and drink ideas that will go good with your main dish are suggested! It's deffinatly a unique and helpful cookbook. You'll love it!
