Book Description
Antigua, Penny, Puce, a barbed tale of sibling rivalry, owes its title to a never-issued one-penny puce-and-white stamp from Antigua with George VI's portrait on it and three puce pigs eating at a puce trough. Jane and Oliver are the siblings who fight for possession of the stamp. Bringing the fight into their adult lives, and after a series of venomous letters, they begin a lawsuit to determine the rightful owner of the penny puce. But whatever the outcome, both are destined to lose. This work can be read as a political parable about colonialism and the conflict in Spain between Communists and Fascists. They Hanged My Saintly Billy was Graves's last major novel, and like much of his fiction, is based on fact. In this case the life of a notorious surgeon, racehorse owner, and confessed forger who got girls into trouble, doped horses, and robbed a few people is the subject of the Graves pen. But, this novel asks, was he a poisoner? The doctor's trial takes place in 1856, and the novel has all the immediacy and spiciness of contemporary life. It is told through interviews with the doctor's friends and foes, and all are involved in piecing the tale together.

Book Description
THEY HANGED MY SAINTLY BILLY is about William Palmer, a surgeon and racehorse owner, thief and philanderer. But was he a poisoner?
Using interviews with Palmer's friends and enemies, as well as trial transcripts, Graves' novel has all the immediacy and passion of contemporary life. Palmer's salty life and notorious death make compelling reading.
"My novel is full of sex, drink, incest, suicides, dope, horseracing, murder, scandalous legal procedure, cross-examinations, inquests and ends with a good public hanging--attended by 30,000.... Nobody can now call me a specialized writer."--Robert Graves
Customer Reviews:
Murderer?.......2001-01-22
The story of William Palmer is at once comic and tragic, for it is the story of a seemingly good man - a country doctor in nineteenth century England - who also just happens to be a forger, philanderer, fixer of horse races and common thief. But the law did not ultimately punish Dr. Palmer for any of these crimes; he is instead condemned by history as one of England's most notorious serial killers, a poisoner suspected in the deaths of his mother-in-law, wife, brother, children and his best friend. I recognized this tale from an adaptation on the PBS series MYSTERY from a few years ago; Palmer was portrayed as a cold-blooded sociopath who used his knowledge of science to serve his own narcissistic ends. So let us then thank Robert Graves for presenting the other side of the story, one supported by the facts and in the same mold as his other great historical fictions "I, Claudius" and "Claudius the God - Graves purports to show what really happened in that small village of Rugeley and the miscarriage of justice that occured at Palmer's trial. The author suggests that Dr. Palmer's most egregious fault was to run afoul of the "combined might of the Police, the insurance companies and the Jockey Club" - especially the latter, whom Graves smirks "would feel a hundred times less aggrieved with a man who garotted a fellow-criminal, an unwanted child, or an ailing relative, than with one who poisoned race-horses." There is little doubt that Palmer stole from friends and family alike or that he attempted to profit from the life insurance policies of those not long for this world; one of the book's most hilarious scenes has Palmer convincing his drunkard brother Walter to insure the remainer of his miserable life: "What about selling your life, Watty? You know it can't be a long one, not above ten years at the rate you're going . . . If you last beyond eight years, I'll be the loser, yet I don't mind taking the risk, if you promise to play fair. What do you say, Watty, old chum? It's easy money, like pledging your skeleton to a hospital." The genius of Graves is that he is able to contrast these moments of high comedy against the overwhelming conclusion that Palmer died a man innocent of the charges against him, namely, the murder of his friend John Parsons Cook. Justice was only a tool here, not the result, it was used to condemn a crook for his notorious life - Palmer was to become an example to all cheaters and deadbeats. I recommend this story to the reader who is able to draw his own conclusions about history - and one who enjoys a good laugh along the way.

1896. Marryat, English novelist who began writing after a distinguished career in the British Navy. The Phantom Ship is the tale of Philip Vanderdecken's search for his cursed father and the Dutchman's ghostly crew. Maritime legend holds that a spectral ship, The Flying Dutchman, haunts the seas around the Cape of Good Hope. Philip Vanderdecken's father is the captain of that ship, condemned to sail and torment sailors until the Day of Judgment. See other titles by this author available from Kessinger Publishing.
Customer Reviews:
Wierd!.......2007-09-24
This is not what I expected at all. It is not related to the books like Dewey Labdin or Patrick O'Brian - no real naval action. Too many ethereal happenings.
A good summer read.......2007-09-11
Marryat not be the best writer of the 19th century but he may be one of the best sea writers of all time. After all, he was there with Nelson and in the Navy for twenty years. This book is strongest at sea. The ending would not be acceptable in this day and age when heroes are invariably rewarded for their efforts with happiness and the girl (see the last Harry Potter book) but that's more of a good thing. Definitely not ready for the cinema, but worth a quick perusal in your spare time.
A Holy Pilgrimage of Supernatural Fright.......2005-07-19
Captain Marryat's Phantom Ship is a masterpiece of nauticle fiction which is intertwined with superstition, elements of the supernatural, and Catholic dogma. Through the adventures of protagonist Philip Vanderdecken, we unravel the legend behind the maritime mystery of the Flying Dutchman, a phantom ship destined to sail about the Cape of Good Hope until the day of judgement.
This is a fine seafaring adventure tale filled with plenty of cutthroat action and an array of memorable characters, specifically that of Schriften who is largely reminiscent of the character of Old Pew from Stevenson's Treasure Island. One cannot but wonder if Stevenson was influenced by this ghastly tome of nautical lore as there are other similarities to be found between these two superb tales.
More importantly however, Phantom Ship is a moralistic tale detailing the holy pilgrimage of one man pitted against evil, in all of its manifestations, in his quest to save his father's soul from eternal damnation.
Wild, Rich Ending.......2003-09-17
As might be expected from an 18th. Century adventure novel, Captain Marryat's _The Phantom Ship_ has about 5 times the requisite action, and (up to the conclusion) about 1/5 the requisite character development. However, I rather enjoyed Captain Marryat's rendering of female lead Amine, a strong woman such as would not be found in the fiction of, say, a century later. Marryat's rendering of the complex and (we would say) confused Father Mathias is also good. And whatever the weaknesses in Marryat's development of his central character, Philip Vanderdecken, all must be forgiven in the light of the last 30 or so pages and Philip's final confrontation with his nemesis, Schriften. All in all, quite a book.
The Flying Dutchman.......2002-04-22
Once upon a time, somewhere in the middle of the XVII century, Mynheer Captain Vanderdecken defied God and brought a curse of the Heavens on himself and his crew, to sail in doom and suffering until the Day of Judgment, bringing despair and death to encountered seamen, unless the holy relic is offered to him, for that is the only chance of forgiveness for Captain Vanderdecken. The phantom ship thus haunts the Cape, later to be know as the Cape of Hope, at the southern outskirts of Africa, but of course, since it's no longer of this earth, it may appear anywhere at the wild seas, serving as a fatal prophecy of disaster. The captain's wife keeps the secret to herself, until one day her son is grown enough to make a decision to go to sea. Frightened out of her wits, the widow reveals the secret, and thus Philip Vanderdecken learns that his fate, his destiny, is to find his doomed father and salvage his soul from eternal hell. And so begins the most revered nautical tale of adventure, a literary account of the Flying Dutchman legend, written by Captain Marryat, the man who spent the best years of his life at the seas in the service of the United Kingdom. Written in the first half of the XIX century, when the literary form of the novel was in its toddler stage, "The Phantom Ship" is astoundingly modern in expression, although the language is often very ancient. Together with the protagonists, we sail around the Cape, we travel around the globe through the Magellan straits dividing the savage land of Patagonia from Terra del Fuego, the door to the Antarctic; in a never-ending series of breathtaking adventures we discover the nautical world of the XVII century, where the Indian and Atlantic Oceans with the surrounding shores were the battlefield where Portugal, Holland, Spain and England fought for domination. Despite the fact that this text will soon be two hundred years old, I can guarantee that you will read this novel more than once, simply because good adventure never gets old, and the ancient world of wooden ships is as enchanting as ever. And then there are the historical and theological aspects of the book. Needless to say, in the mid XVII century the Holy Inquisition was at the peak of its power. "The Phantom Ship", the mythical tale of the Flying Dutchman, is also contextually rich, and offers a plausible, though grim, portrayal of the times. The books is thus serious, analytical, well-researched, and enriched by the author's personal experiences - in addition to the invariably entertaining and often horrifying tale of the cursed ship. The century which just passed was the century of the imperfect man, with atrocities and weaknesses in the spotlight, and it's indeed refreshing to read a novel where it's a perfectly natural phenomenon that all things are in place, men were men and women weren't; and the words, terms and descriptions hadn't lost their original meaning yet. This novel is guaranteed to entertain, do not hesitate to pick it up.

Book Description
Dr. Bloodmoney is a post-nuclear-holocaust masterpiece filled with a host of Dick’s most memorable characters: Hoppy Harrington, a deformed mutant with telekinetic powers; Walt Dangerfield, a selfless disc jockey stranded in a satellite circling the globe; Dr. Bluthgeld, the megalomaniac physicist largely responsible for the decimated state of the world; and Stuart McConchie and Bonnie Keller, two unremarkable people bent the survival of goodness in a world devastated by evil. Epic and alluring, this brilliant novel is a mesmerizing depiction of Dick’s undying hope in humanity.
Customer Reviews:
one of many masterpeices by a scifi god.......2007-08-22
PKD is an insanely genius writer. I've read almost 20 of his books since discovering him just about a year and a half ago, and this was one of my favorites. You should probably read some of his more well known books before you get to this one though. To someone just getting into Dick, I'd suggest reading Ubik, The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch, or Do Android Dream of Electric Sleep before reading this or any of his less well known classics.
Look at the Future.......2006-05-05
Can the world recover from a massive nuclear war or is the human race doomed to die out. The United States of America had set of tons of nuclear warheads on itself which had sparked nuclear warfare, but a lot of people in the word had escaped immediate death. Before the nuclear war started or E-day the U. S. was attempting to start a civilization on Mars. The space shuttle sent up with the Dangerfield couple never made it out of orbit. Mr. Dangerfield had watched the explosions from the spaceship and still had communication with certain places afterward. The people on Earth now relied on him to give them the news of what was going on around the world and entertain them. The only problem was Mr. Dangerfield was getting sick and once he died all communications left on the world would be gone and all entertainment too. Hoppy Harrington is a phoce, person born without arms and legs, which had survived E-day. He was very smart and had some telekinetic powers and stuff. Hoppy, although nobody knew it but him, was the one that was making Dangerfield sick. Hoppy had the technology to reach all the transmitters Dangerfield could and even imitate his voice. He had decided once Dangerfield died he would take over and none could tell the difference. Unfortunately for Hoppy there was a little girl that did know his plan and with abnormal baby lodged in her stomach she killed Hoppy and Dangerfield got better. Dr. Bloodmoney by Philip K. Dick was a creative, disgusting in the way that makes you keep reading, and revealing book that tells you some possible results from nuclear warfare.
This book was creative and weird the whole way through. When after E-day they where talking about animals one could talk and one could play the flute. Also the idea of having an astronaut constantly circling the Earth to give news and entertainment was creative and the thought of a person being born without arms and legs and with mechanical limbs instead in there place is kind of weird and creative.
The way that Stuart McConchie after the war had killed a rat running around and ripping the skin off with his hands, only to eat it raw was quite a disgusting thought. The way that Hoppy Harrington killed a man by picking him up thousands of feet into the air and smashing him into the ground was gruesome, and when they described how after Stuart McConchie left his horse for a couple of minutes to go look for stuff and all that was left when he got back was the bones because a group of men had eaten it was very nasty.
In the book there are many creative ideas on what it would be like after a nuclear war. The idea of having special and different types of animals being born is a possibility. Also the way that everyone values a handyman like Hoppy who can fix mechanical stuff is probably right, and also the way that some people start up businesses like before the war, like making cigarettes, but of course not real cigarettes because they can't grow tobacco, or traps meant to catch these new horrible yet terrific animals. There is a lot of new productions the world stars to adapt to the condition of the planet.
Dr. Bloodmoney was a good read and I would recommend it to anyone that is willing to think about new ideas and not be too skeptical on what is going on. It is well written and well composed and if anyone has time to read this creative book then they definitely should.
M. Becouvarakis
Where have I been all these years?.......2005-11-02
I have been aware of the work of Philip K. Dick for a very long time; I can recall seeing the Ace Double with _Dr. Futurity_ on one side on the racks when it was new. The same is true with _Dr. Bloodmoney_. I think I made my first attempt at reading a Dick novel when I was in junior high school, and over the ensuing 40 years or so have periodically made more attempts at enjoying the work of Dick, with infrequent success.
Now it is as though I have discovered a new writer, and in some ways it's like being in elementary school and discovering Heinlein, van Vogt, Poul Anderson etc. again. In the case of this particular book, it is indeed new to me, as I never tried _Dr. Bloodmoney_ before.
This book starts out just like a mainstream novel, and slips into the stfnal mode gradually, by stages. At the beginning, it's just a normal day at a TV store in Berkeley, CA. But after a bit, things start to get a little strange, when it is revealed that the phocomelus is not only telekinetic, but also can see the future, if he drinks a bottle of beer. By the end of the book things have gotten stranger than you're likely to expect, which is part of what I love about this book. Another part is that the characters are still very believable, even when they are doing convincing telepathic impersonations of the dead, or the like.
Dick's strengths are not the strengths of most science fiction writers. His science tends to be weak, while he excels in plotting and characterization. His strongest point is his ability to juxtapose extremely weird ideas with convincing characters and plotlines. It all actually makes sense, at least if the reader has mental flexibility.
If you're a fan of Dick, I think you would like this book very much. If you're familiar with sf, but not with the work of Dick, you can expect it to not be anything like the other authors you've read. Philip K. Dick is in his own way even more idiosyncratic than Jack Vance, which is saying something!
I highly recommend this book.
1965 SciFi with vision to the future...of 1981 and beyond.......2005-09-16
Even though Philip Dick wrote his SciFi in the 50's and 60's, his style, prose, and vision remain timeless. His ability to nail the human character transcends the time frame of his works.
In 1972, an "accident" occurred, due to a mistake by scientist Dr. Bruno Bluthgeld. Bruno, aka "Mr. Tree", hasn't been able to live with himself since the accident, and seeks the help of psychiatrist Dr. Stockstill during the year 1981. As he steps out from Stockstill's offices, the bombs begin to fall.
Surviving the bombs are also Hoppy Harrington, an armless and legless thalidomide victim with telekinetic powers, Walter Dangerfield, who was sent up in a ship with his wife to travel to Mars but wound out eternally orbiting the earth instead, Stuart McConchie, a TV repairman, and Bonnie Keller, an unhappy housewife and former associate of Dr. Bluthgeld.
They all find themselves in the same West Marin community, living an urban life with no electricity and traveling by wood-burning vehicles or horse. Bonny has a child now, a strange girl with a twin brother inside of her. Bluthgeld becomes more deranged, Walt becomes sick, Hoppy becomes a megalomaniac, and Bonnie's twin Bill awakens.
Things get stranger and stranger in West Marin as the survivors struggle to stay alive, not only in the blighted world, but inside their newly emerged social structures.
'Dr. Bloodmoney' is not the best of Philip Dick's works, but is a memorable tale to add to your collection. Strangely compelling with odd, unpredictable characters, this book makes a very nice beach or vacation read. Enjoy!
Fun-filled PKD, but missing the mark.......2005-09-04
Whilst Dr. Bloodmoney was certainly an enjoyable read, I felt lost at the end, tangled amongst a myriad of characters and plotlines that do not tie up in the usual, satisfying way that other PKD books do.
There's certainly a lot of fun to be had with the characters, my favourite being Hoppy Harrington, who, despite having no limbs, dreams of becoming a TV repair man. In stark contrast to the overjoyed Hoppy, Stuart McConchie seems to loathe his TV repair job, pursuing it only as to make ends meat.
Whilst the stories carry along without too much frustration, you get the feeling towards the end that "PKD is going to pull another one on us", with some far fetched twist that will make you re-read the book to see how it all fits in. However, this doesn't happen, and instead the book seems to fizzle out with only bare interaction between the many characters.
All in all, a good read, but I'd recommend it only to PKD fans. If you haven't read PKD before, don't start with this one.

Ann Wigmore Rocks.......2007-02-08
Seriously, she was really a pioneer...and did many great things for others, unselfishly, to promote global healthcare. As to the book, another great Wigmore book with easy, clear and precise ideas one can readily put into motion...and soon be eating delicious sprouts all year long, using her funky recipes. If you're a city-dweller, she also explains how-to for apartment living. Great book to offer to any beginning living-foods vegetarian you may know. Good investment. Reasonable price.
Sprouting for any level of gardening.......2004-05-14
Terrific! A wonderful book on sprouting for many a skill level. Getting started couldn't be easier, as she provides several methods, along with helpful charts and recipes. Sprouting is a simple way to lead a nutritious lifestyle, and this book details the process quite well. (p.s. - the section on composting is an added bonus!)
One from my "healthy books".......2000-04-07
