5 out of 5 stars Lots of Catgirls and Perverted Humor Makes a Great Combo.......2007-03-27

My girlfriend bought this for me since it was in the Clearance aisle at our local Borders. I just finished the book today and here's my review.

Hyper Police takes place in the future where humans have become an endangered species and monsters and demons are at the top of the food chain. Enter Natsuki, a catgirl who works for the Police Company as a Bounty Hunter who uses powerful magic (as well as some great sword play) to capture monsters that have broken the law. Natsuki is partnered up with a newbie named Sakura, a nine-tailed fox who has her eyes (and stomach) set upon Natsuki with the hopes that by eating her, she'll be able to help her with a problem.

This first volume contains 7 Case Reports as well as a Bonus Report (Bacially 4-Panel comic strips). I love this show, it's crammed full of catgirl action (for fans of said girl), there's plenty of laughs, lots of adult/perverted humor (mainly goes with some sexual situations), and there's even the occasional naked catgirl (don't worry, there are plenty of scantily dressed girls in here as well lol). The artwork is awesome and very well done and the story is great. Anyway, this is a great manga, a great series, I can't wait to get the second volume.

5 out of 5 stars A SCHOOL WITHOUT GIRLS SOCCER.......2006-08-07

So-Jin is transferring to Han Shin in the middle of the year because she's bored of being at an all-girls school. Or is it because her junior high soccer rival, Shin-Bee, who beat her in every aspect of the game for the past three years is attending there. Perhaps So-Jin believes she'll finally get to play on the same team. She's in for a rude awakening though because Han Shin only has a boys soccer team, and Shin-Bee has been appointed manager of it, which really incurs the wrath of some of the sexist team members. Any time So-Jin challenges Shin-Bee, Shin-Bee never takes the bait. In fact, it seems that she no longer has any interest in playing at all! So-Jin thought that she might be leaving the game behind too, but two occurences happen which keep her from that fate. First, a powerful sports business CEO died and donated 50% of his vast fortune to form a women's soccer league and one of the first steps is enlisting his granddaugher, who is a counselor at the school, to begin looking at Han Shin prospects! Secondly, So-Jin, insulted by some deragatory remarks made by the boys soccer team, says that a team of only girls could beat them! Too bad she made the challenge without even having a team. Now she'll have to scour the school for eligible candidates.

I loved this book. One of the reasons is that while there is plenty of boys sports manga out there, this is the first girl sports manga I've read, even though technically, it's from Korea. Once again, I really loved this book. Why? Because for what it is, it was perfect. I really liked the characters, especially So-Jin, who while coming off as a bit of a tomboy, suffers from insecurities and fears, and also a desire to be the best soccer player, even if she knows she might never catch Shin-Bee. In addition to being cute, So-Jin is also very funny, and thankfully, all the jokes in Volume 1 work out well. Even the action sequences are done quite competently, and if they are exciting to me, who is not a soccer fan at all, somebody that really enjoys the game would have a lot of fun with this book. Jae-Ho Youn did a good job of making the characters multi-layered and complex. The art is great. Check this book out.

      5 out of 5 stars Furry sci-fi fun!.......2006-03-07

Hopefully by now, you've seen one of the definately best anime for furries, minus Inu Yasha. But before the TV series there was the manga it was based on. By creator Mee(yeah, that's his name)this post-apocalyptic sci-fi fantasy cop show has something for nearly any kind of furry otaku. You might be familiar with another anime based on Mee's work, Adventures Of Kotetsu, which was released on video from ADV Films a little while ago.

Set in what's called year 22 of the new Holy Century, Hyper Police happens after some disaster apparently caused by mankind, which later brings all different races of monsters out of hiding. In this new society, humans co-exist with monsters, although they are still the majority race, often treating monsters as second-class citizens. This leads to various crime committed by monsters.

Since the regular police can't handle all this, special groups of bounty hunters step in to keep the streets clean for a nominal fee. One group is the Police Company. Natsuki is a catgirl-half that works for them, and lives in a house filled with cats. She's under the care of her partner Batanen, a sex-crazed werewolf. But after accidently shooting him, she gets a new partner in Sakura who is a kitsune whose working to fill out her ninth and last tail. She so far has 8 1/3 tails, and has to consume a being of magical energy in order to be a full-fledged fox spirit. Sakura hooks on Natsuki because she believes her ability to use parasites which shoot out bolts of lightning would give her the power boost she needs.

From this point, its a little like your standard flashy action police anime. Sakura moves in with Natsuki while still trying to "eat" her. Later, the Police Company goes out of business, Natsuki and Sakura have to go solo for a while, but can't collect any bounties without a license. So they become apprentices under Batanen and his dogboy partner Tommy. The weird part is the arrival of a samurai from hundreds of years in the past(Samurai Jack, anyone?)who eventually becomes Sakura's love interest.

The manga doesn't have as much of the action as the anime did, but alot of more gratuitous fan service. Tokyo Pop did a reasonable job for a change with the
      translation though.

This satisfying conclusion to David Gerrold's Dingillian series continues the story of 13-year-old Charles, his idiosyncratic family, and the artificial intelligence HARLIE as they seek a new home in the stars. Before Charles can even board the ship for his new colony world, he finds himself again swept up in adventure and political turmoil. With the voyage finally underway, the focus turns to social conflict as Charles must find answers to disturbing questions about HARLIE--and himself--while a faction of passengers disrupts the voyage with potentially fatal consequences for everyone on board.

This is a young adult novel that older adults will also find appealing. Charles is an engaging and sympathetic adolescent science fiction hero--smart, prickly, wrestling with hard lessons in adult responsibility. Readers new to the series should be patient: backstory is revealed gradually, so as not to interrupt the smooth mix of action and the scientific, philosophical, and religious questions that propel this thoughtful coming-of-age story. --Roz Genessee

            Book Description

Having barely escaped death at the hands of ruthless corporations who have pursued him across the harsh lunar wasteland, teenager Charles Dingillian faces yet another fateful decision: no longer able to return to his home on Earth, Charles and his two brothers must choose a new planet to call home. But which one?Charles has come into possession of a prototype HARLIE unit so revolutionary and state-of-the-art that corporations will stop at nothing - including murder - to control it. Earth is in a state of social and economic meltdown. The battle for domination between rival corporations has gone interplanetary. Charles and the HARLIE unit escape capture on Earth, but the hunt for them intensifies when they are discovered to be on the moon. The stakes have escalated to full-scale war. For Charles, everyone is his enemy. No one can be trusted. Charles has been at war before: only that was a personal civil war waged between him and his parents. In an effort to end the strife once and for all thirteen-year-old Charles took the drastic step of "divorcing" his parents. When against all odds he succeeded, he won his freedom. He and his brothers are now free to do what they choose. To go where they want.Freedom for Charles and his brothers means passage on a starship to a colony Outbeyond. There they will use HARLIE to help build a better world. But freedom also means exile. From his home. From his friends. From everything he has ever known. And even his chance for a new life on a remote planet is put in jeopardy when a critical malfunction with the HARLIE unit seemingly threatens the integrity of the voyage. However, a faction of passengers on board the Brightliner Cascade may pose an even greater risk. A risk not even an intelligence as powerful as a HARLIE unit can avert.

4 out of 5 stars HARLIE vs. Religion.......2004-02-25

The Dingillian saga concludes in this third volume. Charles "Chigger" and his family are trying to decide where to go from the Moon. They will take the HARLIE unit with them. Everyone still wants the unit to help survive the polycrisis Earth is having.

But the moment the family makes up their mind, the roller coaster of events takes off again. HARLIE and its abilities represent survival and power for many groups and colonies. Their bids for possession and control drive the Dingillians on.

Once on their way things are still not perfect. Charles may have found true love but religion has reared up and started questioning HARLIE's nature.

Religion, good, evil, and being human are some of the big issues dealt with in this volume. Again Gerrold does a masterful job of blending large doses of philosophy into the action in ways that don't slow down the plot.

The book's end leaves room for further adventures of HARLIE and the Dingillian family. Let's hope we see some of them.

4 out of 5 stars Hienlein would approve.......2003-02-19

This is the third book in of the Dingillian stories. It is a great book. It has a very Heinlein feel to it. If Robert A. Heinlein was still alive I think he would approve of the story. This story goes over the first two books a little to much, for my liking but if a person has not read the first two books you can still get in to the story and enjoy it. Over all I realy enjoy how Gerrold looks at how and why religion looks at artificial intelligence. I also enjoyed the love story between Chigger and J'mee. Check it out and also check out Jumping off the Planet and Bouncing off the Moon.

5 out of 5 stars The three books in this series are excellent.......2002-04-07

These are excellent books - Jumping Off the Planet, Bouncing Off the Moon, and Leaping to the Stars, especially for adolescents and teens. Having read SF for 50 years I found them to be well written, well plotted, believable and interesting - in some ways reminiscent of Heinlein's best juveniles but with more "human" characters (always Heinlein's weakness). With a 13 year old story teller/protagonist, the series touches on such topics as artificial intelligence, sentience, "who am I", good/evil, the purpose/role of government, and economics. It starts with a believable future Earth (nearing apocolyptic status) scenario, the science is believable and fairly well, if lightly, explained. Lots of adventures, dilemmas, rescues, and some romance. And interesting to see how an originally disfunctional family learns to become functional and a family. A "coming of age" tone for the protagonist as he discovers "who am I". Worth reading, and if you want to introduce an adolescent or teenager to SF, this is a good series to start with.
If you are a parent thinking about these books for your child, note that there is a homosexual relationship in the series. I don't find this a problem, but you might.

3 out of 5 stars Entertaining, but falling short of the predecessors.......2002-03-29

The third book of the Dingilliad certainly is entertaining. Chigger is still fun to listen to, and his escapades interesting to follow. However, the freshness of the first book has worn off, and funny Alexei, who carried much of the second book, stays on Luna. The endings of the first and second books (the court scenes that never really fit into the story and examined moral dilemmas) have been expanded to cover most of the third book - much of it now reads like a thinly disguised philosophical primer on questions such as "What makes me me?", "What is good?", "What is evil?", "What is the social contract?" and so on. Chigger has to burden himself with finding answers to these, with the help of Harlie, whom the author seems to have misused as his personal lecturing professor. I feel that the answers that are worked out fall short of what I had expected when being presented the questions and have a stale, flat quality to them.

Having read the other two books in the series, I'm glad I got to read one more, because I got to like Chigger and his family, but I feel the third book doesn't live up to the ones that came before. It is still an enjoyable read, partly because apart from the philosophy, the author presents interesting questions/problems about and neat solutions to space flight and colonisation, partly because Chigger is just an interesting character (though he's become rather strange - a philosopher with occasional delusions of grandeur or, should I say, heroic ambitions - I liked him better before)

Despite all the misgivings I had about this, I would love to read a fourth book about Outbeyond colony.

5 out of 5 stars worth the leap.......2002-03-01

Thirteen-year-old Charles "Chigger" Dingillian and his reconciling family seek a new home. They debate whether to relocate to the Outbeyond, light years from earth. Ultimately they vote overwhelmingly for relocating to the somewhat unknown Outbeyond.

However, the trip across the stars turns dangerous because everyone seems to want Chigger's HARLIE unit, an artificial intelligence device placed inside a monkey. The government, revolutionaries, and revelationists want HARLIE for different reasons. The government believes the device is so superior it will enable them to strengthen their positions of power. The revolutionaries want the unit so they can overthrow the government and take over the positions of power. However, the greatest known peril to the Dingillian brood comes from the revelationists who consider HARLIE as evil and his owners as devils needing eradication. Then there is HARLIE growing in intelligence to the point that even Chigger fears where the AI gadget is going.

LEAPING TO THE STARS is a fantastic concluding tale to David Gerrold's wonderful trilogy starring Chigger and his family. The story line is faster than space travel and will hook fans of the two previous novels from the very first meeting between the Dingillians and Commander Boynton leader of the ship taking them to the Outbeyond. New readers either should try the first two books before this novel or stay patient while Chigger methodically fills in the gaps from events previously told. Science fiction fans will jump, bounce, and leap to the stars with the Dingillian clan trilogy.

This cookbook is excellent because the recipes are simple and easy to understand. Also, you can find all the ingredients! I've made 6 recipes so far, and all have turned out excellent. (Try the herb baked fish--mmmm)

This book has been a wonderful way to introduce Ayurvedic cooking into my kitchen. I love the fact that these recipes are not "indian" dishes, for variety. I've tried the Salmon Loaf, Seafood cakes, beans & rice, and some very simple side dishes to go with these....all are great. I can also serve these to others who don't care to have indian food 7 days a week ;) As a beginner, I find most recipes in other, traditional Ayurvedic cooking sources a bit too much for my full-time work week, yet as an added benefit from using this cookbook I found that I've built up the courage to try those challenging ones as well... maybe on the weekend, initially. I base this review on comparison with the more complex "Eat - Taste - Heal", "The New Whole Foods Encyclopedia" (good reference on Ayurvedic properties of single foods, but not on "mixing"), and "The Path of Practice" (although this one is not really a cookbook). Hope my experience encourages you to try the Ayurvedic diet!

I prefer cook books with color photos, times to both prepare and cook food and this one hasn't had much of a life out of the book case.
It is hard to find good vegan cook books, I like the subject matter and that it does address food as a source of healing.

This book has easy to follow/easy to cook recipes. I've already made two of the recipes, neither of which required obscure or expensive foods, and both of which were very easy to make. Both recipes took 20 minutes TOTAL - preparation & cooking time - to make, which is an added bonus since I find many veggie/health recipes to be very consuming. To top it off, the results are tasty. One word of caution - some of these recipes are a little ayurvedic suspicious - there are some foods which one may consider to be unfriendly to certain doshas but are listed underneath the dosha recipe anyway.
