Augusta Olsen has seven cats, a son-in-law in the hospital "for tests," and a husband who never says what he is thinking. A Recipe for Bees looks back over her life story, from a childhood on a farm in rural Canada through various waves of premonition and loss. As a young girl she is infatuated with the handsome and mysterious Joe, but all she has left of him is a pendant: a bee frozen in amber. When her mother dies, she marries Karl, who loves her so much that his face reddens when he looks at her. He makes her feel safe and irritable. Only late in life when she rediscovers her mother's beekeeping equipment does Augusta find a true opening into the past, as she spends hours out among the swarms, observing how "a handful of bees felt for all the world like a handful of warm black currants."

A Recipe for Bees is most original and compelling in such passages, which have inherent metaphoric power. It is not for readers seeking the overtly provocative--Gail Anderson-Dargatz stays within a passionate but circumscribed set of images and emotions. A prizewinner for her previous novel The Cure for Death by Lightning, the author will appeal to readers who understand the power of everyday tragedies. --Emily White

Book Description

Gail Anderson-Dargatz's evocative novel of one woman's simple but passionately lived life reminds of us of the pleasure to be found in human contact and simple, natural things.

Raised by her silent but companionable father and a mother who kept bees, headstrong Augusta marries shy, deferential Karl, twelve years her senior, and goes to live with him on his father's remote farm. Terrified that she will literally die from loneliness and isolation, she finds work in town, and for a short time, fulfillment with another man in a romance that will reverberate throughout her life. Not until many years later does she find her salvation in beekeeping, the practice she first learned from her mother. It is beekeeping that reconnects her to the world and at long last brings fire to her steadfast marriage.

2 out of 5 stars Animal lovers beware!.......2006-08-04

I enjoyed reading the book until about halfway through - there are a few instances of animal abuse (particularly about horses) that really bothered me, so I won't finish the rest of it because I don't know what other upsetting things might be contained in the book. Was the author trying to illustrate the rough, tough life of the Canadian wilderness? If so, I know I won't do any sightseeing there! If you love animals alot like I do, find something else to read!

Gail Anderson-Dargatz, A Recipe for Bees (Harmony, 1998)

At first, A Recipe for Bees has the look and feel of your typical dysfunctional family novel. Augusta Olsen, traveling home from the hospital where her son-in-law is being operated on after a seizure-induced stroke, ends up getting off the train at the wrong stop to use the rest room. The train goes on without her, and Augusta calls her next-door neighbor, Rose to come pick her up. While Rose is driving her home, and after they get there, Augusta tells Rose and Karl, Augusta's husband, a number of stories about Augusta and Karl's lives up to this point, interspersed with present-day events and reflections on things she'd rather not talk about aloud. While there is dysfunction in evidence all around, there are snatches of writing here and there that alert the reader that this isn't your typical novel; Anderson-Dargatz is capable of much more than the average...novel of the week.

Those moments of inspired, poetic writing are few, however, and some of them are easily missed in the greater scheme of things. A Recipe for Bees is one of the most difficult kinds of novels to read, a book with almost no pace to it that demands all the concentration the reader can give it. The first few chapters, especially, are quite difficult to get through. Once you've got a sense of the characters, the book gets more engrossing, and eventually it does give the distinct feeling that Anderson-Dargatz will eventually write the novels that will put her on a par with fellow Canadian authors...A Recipe for Bees isn't one of them, but years from now, scholars will come back to it and call it a formative novel.

I'll be looking forward to reading more of Anderson-Dargatz' work. ***

4 out of 5 stars A gem of a book!.......2002-03-15

"Have I told you the drone's penis snaps off during intecourse with the queen bee?"

Great first sentence....wouldn't you say? This is how "The Recipe for Bees" begins. And it only gets better.

Dargatz deals with so many emotions, I found myself laughing one moment and crying the next....

Joy, humor, anger, sadness, spirituality....all tangled up together in one beautiful, unexpected package.

Augusta is old....but remembers what it was like to be young.

She is ahead of her time and feels she deserves more than what
she is getting....
living on the farm isn't what it's cracked up to be....
She is lonely and bored, gets no consideration or passion from her husband.

"Is this my life?" she wonders. "No love, no sex, no nothing."

"Is it really a man's world?" The first sentence gives the reader a superb indication of what Augusta thinks of that!

"As soon as the drone mounts and thrusts, he's paralyzed, his genitals snap off, and he falls backward a hundred feet to his death."

Iteresting and true....

Dargatz uses bees as usefull metaphores throughout this lovely piece of work... The bees are seasons. Augusta is in her last. She is already turning color along with the leaves.

To me, this book is filled with SPRING!

It unfolds and blooms and surprise us with a vivid new flower.... at times.... Even rising up through the snow.

2 out of 5 stars Not as Sweet as I'd Hoped~.......2002-03-09

A Recipe for Bees reminded me a lot of the novel Vinegar Hill. In both stories, a wife is living in a dark, unpleasant home environment. In A Recipe for Bees, Augusta, an older lady, approaching the end of her life, reflects back upon her childhood and her marriage. Her mother dies at a young age, leaving her alone with an unaffectionate father. When she meets Karl and they become married, Augusta moves from one unaffectionate household to another. Living at Karl's father's farm, Augusta is only subject to more withholding of affection and is living a dark and depressing life. The rest of the novel delves into Augusta's search for independence and what she chooses to make of her life. The story takes us down journeys of the ups and downs of marriage, being a misfit in the community, and mother/daughter relationships. The main problem reading it, is that I couldn't find it in me to like the main character, Augusta. I also felt that the story left the reader with a depressed feeling of what marriage is like. The weaving of the "bee" theme added a nice touch to the story, but if you're looking for a great read with a "bee" them, try The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd. The writing in A Recipe for Bees was good, but I felt the story was lacking something~

4 out of 5 stars ACTIVE BEES IN A PASSIVE VOICE.......2002-02-02

At first, I had a very hard time getting into this book. All I saw were errors that authors should never make (or should they?) when they write. Errors like excessive points of view, passive voice and telling not showing. This dissipated as I got more into the novel and "went with the flow." The "errors" were in fact part of the novel. The author meant the novel to be this way, thereby making it even harder to write. It is one thing to try to avoid these mistakes, but it is another to use them deliberately--and use them well. This she did exceptionally well.

A Recipe for Bees is the story of Augusta Olsen in the autumn of her years. The present only covers a short period of time, but the back story covers her whole life. She reminisces through flash backs to her marriage to Karl and his obnoxious father. Because of his father, Karl really cannot relate to her or to life in general until late in life--but thankfully not too late. But to get this final stage of her life, Augusta had to live and she had to learn.

The story is interwoven with the history and practice of keeping bees. The author deftly weaves these into the story making it part of the story. Especially interesting is the swarm of bees that stayed in the barn until they were able to joined again at the hive. Her life is like that swarm of bees.

It is a light read and enjoyable read. I recommend it highly.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent addition for the collector and newbie alike.......2004-01-11

Amidst the loads of movie merchandise generated by the Lord of the Rings movies, this is one item in particular that stands above the rest as a spectacular edition to both the movies and the books. Included are six wonderfully large maps of the different regions of Middle-Earth, including the vast plains of Rohan and its adjoining lands, the dark land Mordor, the northern wilds of Eregion (the lands that lie west of the Shire, including Bree, Weathertop, the Trollshaws, Rivendell, Hollin, Caradhras, Moria and Lothlórien), two maps to show both West and East Gondor, and a highly-detailed map of the four farthings of the Shire.

Each map is highly detailed, and looks quite similar to the ones drawn for the Lord of the Rings books. The maps (if you succeed in making the creases in them disappear) are high quality, and worthy of framing if you want.

There is also an excellent 32-page book that takes you over each region included on each map, examining its importance to the Fellowship's Quest, and to the history of Middle-Earth in general. The book includes all six maps shrunk down to page-size in the back, a general map of Middle-Earth on the back cover, and an index for location reference.

Cheers to Daniel Reeve and crew for their excellent calligraphy work as well as research and planning. This set is a perfect compliment to the books. For those who enjoyed the movies and want to learn more, for those of you who want to brush up on some Tolkien knowledge so your well-versed friends won't have such an edge on you, and for Tolkien fans everywhere, you will love this set.

3 out of 5 stars Attractive maps but doesn't cover all of Middle Earth.......2003-09-22

This set consists of six maps, each of which folds out to about 22" by 16", and a booklet. The maps don't cover all of Middle Earth -- instead they are regional maps that cover all the main action of "The Lord of the Rings".

The six maps are as follows, in more or less the order in which the characters in "The Lord of the Rings" encounter them.
1. The Shire. Includes all of the Shire, and goes beyond to include Lake Evendim in the north, the beginning of the Gulf of Lune in the west, and Bree on the far eastern edge. Hence it also includes the Old Forest and the Barrow Downs.
2. Eregion. From Lothlorien in the southeast to Bree in the northwest; includes the Misty Mountains from just north of Fangorn up to the southern edge of the Ettenmoors. This one is at 30 miles to the inch; the others are all at 20 miles to the inch.
3. Rohan. Includes Isengard at the western edge of the map; all of Fangorn forest, north as far the field of Celebrant at the southern edge of Mirkwood, and east to the east shore of the Anduin, including the Emyn Muil.
4. West Gondor. The Lefnui river runs down the west edge of this map, which covers Pinnath Gelin, the Blackroot Vale, and Dol Amroth in the southeast.
5. East Gondor. Belfalas in the southwest, with Dol Amroth just off the map; the mouths of the Anduin and east as far as south Ithilien and the foothills of the Mountains of Shadow. Minas Tirith is there, of course, and Osgiliath, but Minas Morgul is off the eastern edge of the map. Cair Andros is right at the north edge.
6. Mordor. Mordor is a nice rectangular shape for a map, and the map covers it more or less exactly, with the addition of Ithilien as far as Osgiliath down the west edge.

The maps are not colourful--click on the image of the box on the Amazon page and you'll see an enlarged view that shows the legend areas of all six maps; the colouring there is just as it is on the maps themselves, so that should give you an idea. However, despite the lack of strong colour, the calligraphy and cartography are beautiful.

Reeve does not appear to have taken any liberties that I can see with the topography as described by Tolkien, either by inventing extra names to fill in blank spaces or changing anything. I was a bit surprised to see how large the Shire was, though; it's the same land area as Rohan, which simply astonished me -- I thought of it as a tiny place, perhaps sixty or so miles across, but Reese makes it over 250 miles from west to east, including Westmarch and Buckland. I went back to the original maps at the back of "The Return of the King", and realized that Tolkien had in fact drawn it at least 150 miles across--the scale is so small it's hard to be precise--but it's still surprising.

The booklet includes information about all the major regions of Middle Earth, whether or not they are on the map. On the back cover is a map of all of Middle Earth. Sadly, there's no overall poster to go with it--I'm still looking for a good one. The booklet is informative and moderately detailed; I would guess it's a handbook for a role-playing game, since a game is mentioned in the cover, but there are no more details.

Overall, this is an attractive set of maps for a good price. The weak points are the lack of colour, and the fact that only parts of Middle Earth are mapped.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful maps worthy of framing!.......2003-06-23

These maps are truly beautiful. I am in the process of framing them and they look very impressive when hung on a wall. The map of the Shire is by far the most detailed, and the booklet included has an enormous amount of information in it. I agree with the other reviewer, however, that this set would have been even better if it included Thorins Map. Im very much looking forward to Set 2 due for release this summer!!

3 out of 5 stars It's good but could have been better.......2003-03-16

I bought this collection of maps when actually looking for a poster of the whole Middle Earth. The maps have an antique look and feel on them and the whole package is of excellent quality. The detail of the drawings is good but simple, I think it could've been more detailed. You cannot place the maps to show the continuity between them because they are not all based on the same scale. And, its missing a very important map which is that of Mirkwood and the Lonely Mountain. Anyway, I recommend it but only if you don't mind my findings.

5 out of 5 stars Nice!.......2003-02-12

Wow, these are amazing drawings. A must have for any lord of the rings fan, or just anyone who likes maps. These extremely well drawn maps are accompanyed with a 32page book explaining alot of stuff so that's a bonus right there.

5 out of 5 stars Guide to "Night's Dawn" Universe!.......2004-03-23

For hard core Sci-Fi, the "Night's Dawn" Trilogy has it ALL!!!He-Man heroes, classy heroines, nasty bad guys (not to Even forget THE DEAD RETURNING!!!) New Worlds and Old;Aliens, space battles, suspense, intergalactic conflict and politics; who could ask for MORE? Starships, living space habitats, Biotech, Neurotech, Cyborgs, Genetic Engineering; it's all here; just be prepared to read nothing else for the next couple of MONTHS, 'cause this one is IT!! I originally was hooked into this Epic in the Hardcover Sci-Fi Book Club Edition, buying "The Neutronium Alchemist" first (somehow, I missed "The Reality Disfunction" when first offered; then had to wait another two weeks for that delivery rather than read the story out of sequence. THEN was forced to go through several cowhides, chewing leather and making a complete nuisance of myself until "The Naked God" was finally published and released in Nov. '99. BOTTOM LINE: If you're going to dive into this Epic, Buy the complete Trilogy as a complete set and be prepared to be enthralled by a whole new universe of the caliber of Heinlein, Asimov, or Clarke (and to stay for awhile!!!)

3 out of 5 stars The Book of Spoilers.......2003-07-03

The Confederation Handbook is a companion volume to Hamilton's massive "Night's Dawn Trilogy", which was a trilogy in Britain, but not in the USA. It lays out the history and technology of the major cultures, discusses the planets on which the action of the trilogy occurs, and fills in a little background information.
Why is it a book of spoilers? Much of Night's Dawn consists of going through a long series of adventures to find out the quirks of Hamilton's galaxy. It is the wealth and appeal of his background, and the daring of his conceit- scifi that overtly tackles all the issues usually left to religion-- that make "Night's Dawn" so popular. With this book you get in neat summary the information that would otherwise require you to read thousands of pages of the trilogy itself. Indeed, if you read the first volume of "Reality Dysfunction" and would like to know where the story goes, you have only to read this book, skip the next four and a half volumes, and read the last 100 pages of "Naked God", and you will have the plot. So this book can be considered the Cliff Notes version of "Night's Dawn". Readers who have read and learned all the information provided in the trilogy will find little new here. Since I had read the six volumes at different times, there were gaps in my knowledge, and this book was wonderful for filling those (somehow, I missed the part where he explained the cause of the reality dysfunction itself). So I enjoyed and profited from this Handbook. Please note that the one thing omitted from the "Handbook" is the Deus ex Machina ending of "The Naked God"; readers seeking more information about that phenomenon will be disappointed.
Fans of "Night's Dawn" might want to buy this book as a reference work. It has handy sections on Voidhawk breeding, etc.
Now you can make your own decision.

3 out of 5 stars Delivers what it promises, but nothing really new..........2002-11-14

Here is one book that I am divided on. On the one hand, I can hardly claim to be disappointed since the book delivers exactly what is described. On the other hand, I am a little disappointed due to the nature of the book itself. The first thing to understand is that this is not a book of stories revolving around the "Night's Dawn" trilogy and its Future History. Rather this is basically a compendium of the people, technology, cultures, etc. of that Future History in a condensed format. That being said, all of this is available in the trilogy itself somewhere. It is not in the condensed format, granted, but it is in there. That, of course, is to be expected. However, there is really nothing extra that makes this book all that compelling of a buy. I am sure there are a few extra details here and the degree of satisfaction you will feel with those few extra details will depend entirely upon just how deeply you want to get into the Future History.

If you are a person that has trouble getting into "space opera" type stories where there are many characters, cultures, and technologies, this book might help you make sense of it all beforehand rather than learning it piece-meal via reading through the "Night's Dawn" trilogy of books. However, if you are not that sort of person my guess is you will feel that you wasted your money. (Note: I am not saying you will feel cheated. As I said, the book gives what it promises.) I gave this three stars because it is an excellent compendium to the "Night's Dawn" trilogy but I kept the last two stars simply because nothing extra was really added for those fans who might have wanted a little more. If I had to make recommendations, I would say avoid this one and read the trilogy or "A Second Chance at Eden" (which is a collection of short stories and novellas dealing with the Future History).

1 out of 5 stars If you have read the series, don't buy this.......2002-10-12

I was sorely disapointed with this book. I was hoping for the majority of it to be background and detail that wasn't covered in the series. Unfortunately, other than some "physical data" on many of the star systems, a few in depth histories and one or two other tidbits, most of the information in here is directly from the trilogy, just repackaged. This book was a waste of my money.

Maximum Salmon is the only book you need to catch West Coast salmon in salt and fresh water. Focusing exclusively on salmon fishing techniques, D.C. Reid outlines strategies for angling, from Alaska to California. Reid presents the gear, tackle, techniques and essential knowledge of salmon behaviour that transform average salmon fishing into maximum salmon fishing.

Anglers will learn the nitty-gritty of rigging information crucial to success. They'll find out about specific fly patterns, hootchies, plugs, Apexes, spoons, bait heads and drift-fishing lures. They'll be introduced to techniques they may not yet have tried but should: power mooching; streamer stripping; sunk, skated, swung and dead-drifted freshwater fly tactics; and the baitcaster and open-face spinning techniques for bait and artificials.

This guide covers all six disciplines--gear, fly and spey in both salt and fresh water--and includes all major types of fisheries for all five species of salmon: sockeye, pink, chinook, coho and chum. Techniques are presented in clear language along with accompanying diagrams and photographs.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A very good technical book .......2005-08-23

Lets clear one thing up. This book is canon in regards to the Wing Commander movie. NOT the video games. The two are completely different franchises so if you're looking for some official writings based on the games you will have to look further. On the other hand if you are looking for the same in regards to the movie you hit the jackpot. This book is very comprehensive all things considered. It's even comprehensive enough to make you look at the movie with a different perspective.

While this book doesn't really rival other movie-manuals like the Colonial Marines Technical Manual it goes into a LOT more detail than you might expect. You get a comprehensive history written in this book that explains all that Pilgram stuff that was on the movie. It also covers the history of the Kilrathi war as well as the customs of that race. You also get officer profiles of all the major characters in the movie.

The technical side of things is okay, but not perfect. You have some decent info on the fighter ships and carriers from both sides of the war, but I wished they went further. For instance there are deck plans for the Tiger's Claw, however it's a VERY basic plan and there's not much information added from there. Also it would be nice to know things like how powerful are the main guns on a Rapier? How effective are meson shields. Stuff like that. What I did like was the fact they put some detail on little things like the combat armor the marines wear and the weapons they used.

The one thing that really impresses me on this book is the level of detail that was put into the explanation of the faster than light technology in the movie (jump points and the drives that ships use to access them). This includes the history of the science and technology. For any of you sci-fi science nuts this stuff is really interesting.

All in all this is a very worthwhile book. As a matter of fact I recommend reading this book before seeing the movie if you can. The book clears up a lot of things that can be either vague or uninteresting for the layman. This book especially clears up the whole "Pilgrim War" issue they mention in the movie. Pick up this book if you can get it cheap. It would be well worth it.

1 out of 5 stars A terrible disgrace to the best sci-fi sim game ever made.......1999-06-04

My god... I have played to games, and i have read the books. The only good thing about the book is that it sticks to the movie. But the problem with that is that the movie sucked equally.

The facts are wrong and corny. I do not recommend reading the book or seeing the movie even if you arent a Wing-Commander fan If you are a Wing-Commander fan: Then you'll hate this movie and book because...well, its all wrong. Blair was an orphan, and his mother lived. There were no pilgrims! Jesus!

If you are not a WC fan: You'll think this was made for kiddies under 8....

4 out of 5 stars Is It worth buying!!.......1999-04-22

Yes inded it is. It's a great manual with a lot of facts and scifi- stuff. It has a lot of great illustrations and the art work is god. But there is one thing that bugt me though. Only half the book is in color, the rest is black and white. Not that it matters but I just thought that I would bring it up. Every Sci-fi and Wing Commander fan should have one. The best thing about the book(manual) is that you get the background information on the Pilgrim Conflict from the movie, Theres also included a boarding protocol for marines, and technical information of their weapons and equipment. another thing which can be a little anoying is that theres only technical information about the ships and fighters from the movie. I would have liked them to have included some of the other confed. ships from the 3rd and 4th installment of the CD.rom games. All in All this book is great I wouldn't miss it for the world, there is tons of cool stuff in it which I do not wan't to reveal to spoil your fun. Now, go buy the book. A tip: Buy the movie soundtrack, sit down on your favorite cauch, open a can of soda relax and read the book(manual). Alvin from Denmark

5 out of 5 stars WC finally gets one of those Techno thigies.........1999-03-10

FINALLY! Wing Commander finally gets a technical book like the ones in the Star Wars universe. This book is full of rich detail. The pictures are nice, and the extra's like Jump Point physics and analysis of Pilgrim Brain Wave patterns were very nice. McCubbin did a wonderful job with this book

4 out of 5 stars Passable but not as high as expected..........1999-03-09

Although full of incredible images and some fun facts, the handbook is only alright. I was looking for another STAR WARS TECHNICAL MANUAL but I was disappointed by the 'glossy' workmanship inside. Not to say this isn't a good read for WC fans! Many of the areas, like Blair and Maniac's academy forms and the Deck Officer's 21 Rules and Regs is actually quiet fun and Tolwyn's reviews of officers are interesting. A lot of the book could be made better, like the opening interview with Sir Admiral Geoffrey Tolwyn or the layout of the Tiger's Claw. Over all, a disappointing but nessessary book for all WC fans.

      Book Description

Major questions have always existed concerning the role and status of Indian tribes and Indian peoples within the fabric of life in the United States. There is a relatively consistent body of law whose origins flow from precolonial America to the present day. This body of law is neither well-known nor well-understood by the American Public. Federal Indian law - or, more accurately, United States constitutional law concerning Indian tribes and individuals - is unique and separate from the rest of American jurisprudence. Analogies to general constitutional law, civil right law, public land law, and the like are misleading and often erroneous. Indian law is distinct. It encompassed Western European international law, specific provisions of the United States Constitution, precolonial treaties, treaties of the United States, an entire volume of the United States Code, and numerous decisions of the United States Supreme Court and lower federal courts.

The nature of the federal, state, and tribal relationship was defined in a highly politicized setting, when the Supreme Court of the United States, led by chief Justice John Marshall, struck down an entire series of state statutes violative of tribal-state and tribal-federal relations. These cases established the principles that Indian tribes possessed sovereignty over their members and territory and that the federal government protects tribal sovereignty, land, and resources from states and non-Indian interests.

The Supreme Court of the United States has specifically addressed the issue of whether specialized treatment of Indians by the federal government is unconstitutional racial discrimination. The clear answer of the Court was that it is not. For the purpose of dealing with the federal government, Indian tribes are not racial groupings but rather political groupings - governments.

This directory provides a unique source of information on the land areas controlled by these governments that many citizens do not even realize exist.
