5 out of 5 stars what a book.......2005-05-18

What a book. Konwicki walks through a man's worst day with such grace and humor and startling language, that we forget that what we're really watching is a funeral. The best novel i've read in years. I wish I'd written it.

5 out of 5 stars An Incredable Novel........2004-01-04

This incredable novel can be easily treated as a highlight of the late 1970s Polish political prose. It exposes human being and his situation in the realm of essential individual and private, but also social and historical decisions.

"A Minor Apocalypse" exposes questions of loneliness, death, meaning of individual struggle with the political system; specific type of love and human passion; meanders of life; meanig of art; alcoholism... A great prose!

4 out of 5 stars A relic of the Cold War.......2003-09-08

I enjoyed this book a great deal and was fascinated by it as well. The Cold War seems so far away now, and this book captures the feel of the vague, aimless, crumbling, exhausting Eastern bloc so well. It's not a frivolous book at all, but is still quite funny in the same way that Joseph Heller and Kurt Vonnegut were. I just wish I understood all the cultural references. ...

5 out of 5 stars Most Amazing Book.......2001-03-29

The thing that separates most Polish authors from other Western authors is the sense of responsibility they bring to writing. Minor Apocalypse is a prime example of this. Konwicki's use of self-reference and surrealism is not only breath-taking and provoking, it allows him to make very bold (for the time) comments on post-war Poland and the machinery of politics, propoganda, and activism.

You follow the author around on what might be his last day on Earth and in that day he lives an enitre lifetime. He forms and breaks friendships, he falls in and out of love (within a few paragraphs), he is awoken and handed his destiny.

But most of all, this book, while profound, is very funny. You will find yourself laughing at the ridiculousness of it all...

4 out of 5 stars Rain's youth........2007-05-27

Kaori Ozaki, Immortal Rain, vol. 3 (Tokyopop, 2002)

Immortal Rain continues, and it's as strong as ever. We get a bit of frame story here, to continue where we left off at the end of Volume 2, but the bulk of this one is Rain relating a tale of his youth. We get to see what--and who--made Rain immortal and why, and why it is that Rain is waiting for his rebirth. Not the most action-packed episode in the series by a long shot, but great for character development, and a quick, compelling read well worthy of wearing the series' name. ****

4 out of 5 stars Poetic Manga.......2006-05-15

Immortal Rain features good, clean illustration (oh, those manga girls are so pretty!), action sequences you can actually understand, and a sense of a longer story, rather than an episodic romp. Rain Jewlitt is immortal - perhaps the only one of his kind - and he's being hunted by a fourteen-year-old girl named Machika, who has taken over her grandfather's position as the bounty hunter known as Grim Reaper Zol. (Bounty hunters are big in manga.) Rain is the only quarry the elder Zol failed to bring in, and Machika vows to do what her grandfather couldn't. She ends up sympathizing with Rain (of course!) and actually becoming his friend and traveling companion. I really enjoyed this book, and I'll pick up the next volume.

4 out of 5 stars Who Wants to Live Forever?.......2006-05-04

I have always loved stories that take on the theme of immortality and its consequences within the plot. So you can imagine I was very pleased to see something called Immortal Rain hit the manga shelves. The title is to the point, the main character is immortal, and there's plenty of tears and painful emotions to tread through in this work. Since I've read the first five volumes, I'm using this review to reflect on what I've read up to this date.

The story in this manga is interesting: a 14 year old assassin determined to kill a man who is practically immortal and has lived for over 600 years, and the relationship that develops between them. However, the first volume is not a strong launch into the series. In the first book, the plot falls too heavily into mini storylines and manga cliches. There are too many silly moments tied in with the dramatic, and the results are on the uneven side. If you tried the first and are hesitant to go further--read the second volume, please! The second volume builds the plot and captures readers powerfully, with none of the painful cliches. There's still a sense of humor in the writing, but now it comes off as part of the whole. This is a love story, and a science fiction/horror story. The relationship between Rain, our reluctant immortal, and Machika, our pint-sized assassin, becomes poignant and meaningful. Meanwhile, in this future society, strange mutated beings called Angels are created . . . and the end of the world may be at hand. By book three, the plot becomes truly dark, and it's hard to look at the characters in a light hearted manner that they were treated with in the first volume.

Overall, this is a deeply emotional and thought-provoking SF series. It's probably not going to appeal to those who want nothing but action, or a more contemporary storyline like MARS or FRUITS BASKET. There isn't any real nudity or sexual situations--the romance remains tender. However, there is quite a bit of violence, and while it may not be the graphic gore fest of something like Hellsing, the story rendered violence is more startling and harsh in its own way. This series probably won't interest younger readers, and is more target towards older teens.

I have to say the story quality has really gripped me, and kept me hungry for more. Machika's tomboyishness isn't overdone, but she seldom dissolves into a whiny girl either. Her strength is one of the inspiring features of this manga. Likewise Rain, in all his complexity and kindness, makes for a magnificent character. (It doesn't hurt that he's pretty, too!) Guy readers might find the romance plot a little strong for their tastes, but there's a lot of meat to the SF plotline as well. The artwork is superb: it makes a good storyline into a stunning manga. The panels are drawn beautifully, and I never felt a single image was wasted. The art isn't overly ornate and much of the time, it avoids extensive detail, allowing the readers to focus on the characters and their expressions. When it does add in detail, the effect is powerful indeed. Perhaps one of the only issues I have with the art, is the way words are added in. There are so many different kinds of overlapping text (some reflective, some only thoughts) that it can be a little challenging to read it all properly. But that is a minor complaint overall.

This manga may not appeal to everyone, but it has fast become one of my favorites. My only worry for now is that the writer may not complete the series, and that I may be left without a resolution to the plotline. Those who enjoy this might also like the BASARA manga series. And for those who enjoy themes of immortality in stories, please check out The Last Unicorn by Peter Beagle if you haven't already.

Happy Reading! ^_^ Shanshad

5 out of 5 stars Great Series.......2006-02-05

I am reviewing here on ALL of the Immortal Rain books. (Don't worry, no spoilers.) I'm not going to bother to summarize here, seeing as plenty of reviewers have already done that. This is a wonderful series. It really grabs the reader and makes them feel the emotions of the characters. (It's a Fantasy/ Action/ Romance Blend.) I would recommend reading the first two or three books in this series before making up your mind about it. Yes, I know, the first one doesn't make a whole lot of sense. Stick with it though, and all will be revealed. Trust me, it's worth it. (Note: A lot of people are saying that is similar to the Trigun series. I have never read any of the Trigun books, so I don't have anything else to compare this to. I have read a lot of other manga, but so far this is unique.)

4 out of 5 stars Extremely good.......2006-01-14

Although this series may have had an uncertain start, it just gets better and better as it goes on. While volume 1 and 2 set up the charcters of the series, volume 3 transports us back to a time when Rain was mortal and shows how he became immortal. In volume 4 the story comes together and contains some of the most important moments of the series with Yuca's rebirth and a climatic show-down between the Calvaria group and Machika and Rain. The consequence of voume 4, with it unexpected and shocking ending, sets up the story for volumes 5 & 6. Earlier characters that may have seemed unimportant take a new resonance as we begin to see their true role in the story. Volume 7 was released in Japan in November 2005 and will be published by TokyoPop in English in November 2006 (Yaay!)
This series has many action set pieces but also some truly touching scenes. I love the characters of this series as they show genuine warmth and emotion. The drawings by Kaori Ozaki are clean and crisp and out of all the Mangas I have read my favourite style. Due to most volumes ending on clliff-hangers, I recommend, if you enjoyed volume 1, buying 2 or 3 at a time. Please note that the editorial description for volume 4 is incorrect.

2 out of 5 stars A Rather Disappointing conclusion.......2003-07-25

for both the serious and the book left a bad taste in my mouth. Nystrom, who has hunted through the Mesozoic, Spanish Jamaica, Roman Germany, Stalin's Russia, Kubilai's China, and finally Arthur's Rome now gives up as being defeated just because he gets bonked on the head? C'mon!! This was a fun series because Nystrom was so very monomaniacal. Failing to accept for the entire six-book series that he would be treated in any way BUT unfair, all of the sudden we are expected to believe that he has changed his mind, just like that? It doesn't make sense and it just doesn't jibe. A truly disappointing ending for the novel, although the rest of it wasn't too bad.

Unfortunately, though, at no point does the author seem to be very interested in telling the story. The Steve and Jane plot line leads to an expected direction with foretold conclusions, but that wasn't enough to overcome the rest of the ending. A rather blase ending to a really fun and energetic series. Perhaps a lesser known time or one more interesting to the author would have picked up his enthusiasm and helped us out.

The dialogue was still sketchy, although far better by now, and the conclusion was a little compacted, but the technical parts of the story were not the failing this time.

An unfortunate end, but important for closure. Plus Steve and Jane finally get together. Worthwhile in the end more for the other books than on its own merit. Read it and enjoy it, but probably only once.

UPDATE: 3rd printing now available

Veganism—the animal-free diet—is here to stay. And Dreena Burton, author of the bestselling The Everyday Vegan, is here to show you how the decision to "go green" doesn't mean you have to sacrifice nutrition or flavor, and in fact will make you and your family feel healthier and more alive.

Dreena and her husband became parents three years ago, and their decision to raise their daughter as vegan from birth has made the need for an animal-free diet that is fully nutritional all the more crucial. But as Dreena demonstrates in Vive le Vegan!, there's no need to panic: there are simple methods and delectable ingredients you can use that will allow you—whether you're single or have a family—to become vegan without having to be a rocket scientist. And who said that vegan meals lack pizzazz? Not when you can make:
Berry Hemp Smoothies, Fresh Jicama and Cucumber Slaw, Hearty Roasted Tomato Stew, Carrot-Shitake Spring Rolls, Chipotle Veggie Bean Burritos, Moroccan Chickpea Patties, Apple Cardamom Cake with Creamy Lemon Maple Frosting

The recipes in Vive le Vegan! also don't always require soy, given recent concerns about over-consumption, and many feature whole grains and hemp. They're also disarmingly easy to prepare. So it's time to give up your qualms about the vegan lifestyle and celebrate its vivid possibilities. Vive le vegan!

Now in its 3rd printing.

5 out of 5 stars Reliably delicious!.......2007-09-24

Every single thing I cook from this book is a winner. And I am the queen of modifying recipes from cookbooks, but I don't change Dreena's recipes. It is getting to the point where this cookbook nearly never makes it back to my bookshelf. The recipes are also so unique and yet use ingredients that are so accessible (and good for you!). And I am now cooking with grains I thought I hated. The recipes are full of options and explanations and extra information that it is just a fun read. The food is really, truly, reliably delicious! I think this cookbook is a must for even the most experienced vegan cook, and should be a must for every cook! Thank you so much for this cookbook, Dreena, and the others to come!

5 out of 5 stars BEST Vegan cookie recipes ever!!.......2007-05-30

This cookbook is now one of my favorites, if only for its cookie recipes! Every single one has turned out beautifully, with the perfect soft texture, and she uses natural ingredients like maple syrup and canola oil rather than vegan margarines and egg replacers. I also like that the recipes are small and make only one batch of cookies. As much as I like to bake, I really don't need 36 cookies begging to be eaten! In addition to the fabulous cookie recipes, I ADORE the chickpea ratatouille...that's definitely a new favorite.

5 out of 5 stars Vive Dreena Burton!.......2007-05-01

Vive Le Vegan is by far my most favourite vegan cookbook. I love how Dreena uses whole foods, non-hydrogenated oils, unrefined sugars and fresh ingredients to create delicious dishes that my whole family loves. I feel really good feeding my children these healthy treats and snacks. The recipes are well organized, easy to follow, and come out perfectly every time. I especially love Vive Le Vegan's focus on Hemp foods and whole grains. I can't say enough good things about this cookbook! I recommend it to all my friends and family, whether or not they are vegans!

1 out of 5 stars Extremely Disappointing!.......2007-04-24

This was one of the most disappointing cookbooks I ever bought. First of all, there are very few recipes and the recipes there are, all use the same ingredients, most of which are hard to find and not what most people have on hand. I usually have 5 to 7 different baking flours/grains in the house. I think that should be sufficient but it wasn't for this book. The normal seeds weren't either. Green vegetables seem to be nonexistent in these recipes also. The entire cooking palette was very limited. The recipes seem to be aimed at people who want to experiment with unusual grains and seeds and are sensitive to wheat and soy.

I recieved this book about 3 weeks ago and still haven't found a recipe I both had the ingredients for and wanted to cook at the same time. I doubt that I ever will. Another real drawback to this book is that there are no photos of the meals. There are pictures of the author and her family if you care about that, not my bag, but none of the meals you might want to cook.

My advice - Save your money. The vegan recipes online are much better, most of them have pictures, and they're free! There's only one reason you might want to buy this book, that's if you have a brand new baby that you want to raise vegan. There is a section about raising a vegan baby with instructions on preparing a vegan diet for infants which looks helpful.

5 out of 5 stars easy, tasty, and healthy.......2007-02-18

I bought this at first because it was recommended on a vegan site I often visit, and I'm glad I did! The recipes are clear, easy to make, usually involve simple basic ingredients, and are both tasty and healthy (i.e. they don't contain a lot of oil, which many vegan baked goods do). The only thing that isn't readily available is hemp seed nuts, but I've substituted other nuts with no problems. The Lenitil Sunflower Pie is particularly good--its on my regular rotation of meals now. I only wish this book was longer--but I will definitely check out other of Dreena Burton's books.

The Everyday Vegan is a great cookbook. It contains lots of versatile recipes that are for the most part easy to make and not time-consuming. I've been a lacto-ovo vegetarian for many years, but I'm new to being vegan and I've found this cookbook informative. I also appreciate that she is health conscious and avoids partially hydrogenated food items.

I use this book quite often. I find the recipes to be reliable (this is an issue these days) and excellent. As a cane sugare-free vegan, I look for cookie recipes that use fruit or agave nectar as the sweetening source. "Bill's Cookies" are absolutely delicious. But all the recipes I tried are very good and I highly recommend this book to all vegans, just beginning and experienced.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent for those just beginning their vegan journey!.......2007-03-15

I found almost all of the recipes I tried to be VERY good. Some seem a little involved, but are worth the extra effort. I also love that most of the ingredients are "everyday" ingredients. And the introduction is VERY worth reading if you are new to being a vegan or just want to try out vegan foods.

Recipes to try: Mediterranean sauce (great cold as a leftover, too!), "Neat Balls", Savory tofu burgers. YUM!

1 out of 5 stars Waste of money.......2006-07-23

I wish I had read Maya's review sooner (see earlier post)!!

I found this on the shelf of a Wild Oats grocery. It was an impulse purchase because I needed a vegan cookbook in a hurry after deciding to go off meat and dairy for health reasons. Once I took the time to examine this book more closely, I realized I had made a major mistake in trusting that Wild Oats would have a good vegan cookbook for sale.

I totally agree with Maya Saran. She has very precisely described the problems with this book's tone and recipes. I couldn't cook most of the recipes without a major shopping trip, or a specialty order from an internet store. I am so glad I saved my receipt - this book is being returned as soon as possible!

2 out of 5 stars Good luck finding the ingredients (and digesting the sermon).......2006-01-28

The self-righteousness of this book is annoying ("Using chemical cleansers in my home is not an option"), the new-age tone is cloying ("When I saw my midwife's face light up with joy and wonderment everytime she touched my womb... I knew she was living her soul's task"), and the sincere self-congratulation on her own wonderful, wholesome, healthful, spiritual lifestyle is irritating. But so what, I just wanted the recipes. So I skipped the seventy page long section on "the denatured foods of commerce" and tried some. I am already a vegetarian and I was looking for some good food without milk or eggs. But I was disappointed. My biggest problem was the ingredients. One example: every other recipe calls for "Vogue Vege Base" - I had never heard of it. I went to a couple of big natural food stores, and nobody in either of these had heard of it -and I live in CAMBRIDGE, MA, WHERE EVEN THE CONVENIENCE STORES HAVE NATURAL, ORGANIC FOODS!!! Another favourite ingredient is Bragg Liquid Aminos. Hijiki, sprouted wheat, brown rice syrup, agar powder, slippery elm powder, flax seeds... the list of things I don't have in my kitchen is SO long that it's overwhelming. It's not just ingredients - equipment is also a stumbing block. (Do you have a Vita-Mix Total Nutrition Center?) I did try a few things, they were only ok. Instead of this book, I recommend '150 Vegan Favorites', by Jay Solomon -easy recipes with straighforward ingredients that always turn out well.

Compiled by an expert health and cooking counselor Jeani-Rose Atchison, Everyday Vegan: 300 Recipes For Healthful Eating is a high-spirited, healthy-living cookbook featuring meat and animal-product free recipes for all occasions, and much more - facts concerning food groups, advice concerning the deleterious effects of pesticides, genetically engineered, and irradiated foods, and food philosophy. Recipes include mouth-watering dishes such as Gingered Butternut Squash Soup, Asparagus Flan, Lettuce-Wrapped Tempeh Meatballs, and so many more. A first-rate resource for creative and health-conscious vegan chefs.

5 out of 5 stars Everyday Vegan is for Everyone.......2003-07-15

Jeani-Rose Atchison, author of Everyday Vegan, walks the walk. She grew up on a typical American diet as most of us did: "with no thought of nurturing, just the primitve notion of survival." This continued into her early thirties when she learned that she had compromised liver and kidney function. When she eliminated certain foods such as meat, dairy, and refined foods, she witnessed dramatic results: her body felt more relaxed, she moved easier, her joints were not stiff, and her breathing improved. Yes, this is a vegan cookbook, but more importantly, the first 70 pages are devoted to chapters on Conscious Living, Thinking of Children, Food Group Facts, and Food Philosophy. Attention is called to organic food and genetically engineered food, with case studies about the use of pesticides and children.

5 out of 5 stars This book changed my life........2003-02-12

This book really changed my life. It is written in more of a casual format, but its content is very good. It contains a great deal of diet guidelines, as well as a number of very good vegan whole-natural-food recipies. I own a number of vegan cookbooks but this is the one that I go to 90% of the time. In addition, following this book, I've lost about 50 pounds!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding!.......2007-10-10

I recieved my copy of Eat, Drink, and Be Vegan about a week ago, and I've already made about a dozen fabulous recipes. The dishes all turned out so well, my husband, children and even non-vegan friends all loved them! The only problem is choosing which recipe to try next.. there are so many great ones in this book.

And as a busy (and 8 months pregnant!) mother of 2 children, I love how these recipes are easy, fast to make, and are healthy for the whole family. I highly recommend this book.

If you haven't already, visit Dreena's blog.. or email her directly.. she's always available to help if you're having trouble with a recipe, or are unsure about an ingredient.

5 out of 5 stars Well edited, healthy and tasty!.......2007-10-08

Once again, a wonderful cookbook. I've so far only made the raspberry chocolate chip scones and they were fantastic. As with her other cookbooks, the layout of the recipes is really well done and easy to read. I also like how she gives substitution suggestions and other spice/flavor options in the margin. Dreena's recipes are always great and use lots of healthy, wholesome ingredients that make the food a guiltless pleasure to enjoy.
