Book Description

“I want to turn back the hands on the clock and change it all, make it different; three friends who meet up by chance in an old city and share a beer and laugh at old stories and jokes. But it wasn’t like that; and the clock has no hands, so I can’t turn them back.” [p.171]

Alex Carlise has returned to a place he thought he’d never see again, outside of his dreams. As he walks the ochre-dusted road to the house in which he grew up, the memories of his young life in a small Italian town push all other thoughts out of his head: thoughts about the major exhibition of his artwork opening soon in London, thoughts of the myriad things he should be doing in preparation–everything subsides to make room for the warm flood of a time long past.

When he opens the door to the now-deserted house, he is suddenly seven again. There is Jamie, his first friend, his best friend; Anna, his first love; and the delicious days they spent exploring the valley and swimming in the cerulean blue Mediterranean Sea. It all comes back to Alex in a way he can neither control nor discern. But the memories are insistent, demanding. Soon Alex loses entire hours to the past, overwhelmed by the haunting memories of a youth turned tragic.

Alex remembers the day he, Jamie, and Anna went to their favorite place, an abandoned church far up in the hills. There they stumbled upon a man, injured and sick. From this discovery, a series of events tumbled forth that would change them all forever. Alex now realizes that he must confront the truth about himself, about the echoes of the past that still haunt him, and about the friends whose legacy has meant only devastation.

Guy Burt’s vision of youth is piercingly accurate, and his sense of how time can play tricks on the mind is startling. Haunting, eerie, and remarkably assured, The Clock Without Hands will resonate with the child that hides inside your own memories.

4 out of 5 stars See What's Become of Me.......2005-12-11

After a death in the family, Alex has returned to his childhood home, which prompts him to re-live the events in his life in which he has purposefully chosen to forget. Throughout the novel, he seeks to understand how the events of one summer could change his life forever.
The majority of the novel takes place in Alex's childhood, where he and his best friends Anna and Jamie stumble upon "the hermit" in a deserted chapel. The hermit is a mystery- he is critially wounded yet pleads that the children don't seek help for his injuries. Instead, the three friends take it upon themselves to care for the hermit for the duration of that summer. The secret kept among Alex, Jamie, and Anna forms an unbreakable bond, yet they soon realize that knowing the true nature of the hermit may haunt them for the rest of their lives.
As you follow the three friends into their teenage and adult lives, Alex struggles to keep their friendship strong, not fully understanding the consequences of that summer's events. It is only in retrospect that Alex begins to realize how fluid time is- how things sometimes cannot be fully understood until it's too late to change them.
Guy Burt has written the novel in a style which reflects the scattered memories of the narrator, which lends credibility to the emotional impact of the story. Although some plot lines where somewhat predictable, there were other events in the novel which were completely shocking. I was touched by this novel, and I would strongly recommend this book.

America's best selling book, somewhere in the darkness by Walter dean Myers has won a Newbery honor award. As soon as you start to read you will never stop.
A life of a fourteen years old boy named jimmy is holding his own little world. He lives in Harlem. He never saw his father and lives with his mom. Suddenly one day he was walking home from school, he saw a man standing in front of his house. That's when the book starts to get interesting.
I will recommend this book as one of the best book. The writing style is very persuasive. The father of jimmy is very dramatic. You will never know what he going to do next. This book has professional language and easy to read. This book is like more reality then fiction.
It is the best time to try it out. It will probably take you week and half to finish it up. It also has lot of drama. Don't waste your time go ahead and start reading today.

I absolutely recommend this book to all readers. Walter Dean Myers does a fabulous job in showing Jimmy's varied perspectives towards his father. This was a well-written, realistic fiction book that had a perfect mix of action and emotion. This book had plenty of surprises, too. One example is when the police caught Crab and Jimmy. As I was reading this book, I couldn't wait to discover the content of the following page, due to the fact that Jimmy and Crab are always looking over their shoulder for a dangerous finish. For all of those who enjoy an exciting quick-read, this book is for you.

4 out of 5 stars SWITD is a moral book.......2006-12-04

When I read this book I was surprised that it was so moral and that it points out some problems we have in real life. After I went to read the authors bio I noticed that most of the things he has in his books are something similar to his life and I was not surprised his favorite books are ones he can relate to. That being said if you want an action book this isn't your best pick but if you want something that will make you think then go for it.

In the haunting yet buoyant picture book by bestselling, award-winning author Barbara M. Joosse and award-winning illustrator R. Gregory Christie, a young boy tells of his brother Richard's entrance into the world of "gang bangers." Richard has always made his little brother feel safe and loved, until he starts "walkin' that walk, like he's King Stuff." The boy watches warily: "Richard thinks I'm a little kid, but I'm not as little as he thinks. I know what I know." Finally, the boy and his mother take action, galvanizing the neighborhood to walk the streets at night, advocating peace.

Christie's striking paintings of the family and neighborhood are strong, eye-catching companions to Joosse's powerful story. Readers will feel great hope for the protagonist, as, even in a dark hour of his young life, he sees the flashlights carried by his neighbors as "stars crackin' the darkness," an image repeated from the beginning. Joosse's message is aimed directly at "the little sisters and brothers... the stars in the darkness." An author's note and list of gang prevention resources are included, making this more than just an urban storybook--it can serve as a real resource for children at risk for joining a gang. (Ages 5 to 9) --Emilie Coulter

Book Description

In the imagination of a young inner-city boy, police sirens sound like howling wolves, streetlights look like stars, and shots fired by neighborhood gangs sound like those stars cracking the darkness. But when his older brother joins a gang, he can no longer pretend. With the help of his mother, he comes up with a plan to save his brother and unite his neighbors in a stand for peace. The realistic yet uplifting words of best-selling author Barbara M. Joosse combine with powerful illustrations by award-winning artist R. Gregory Christie in this hope-filled story. One young boy's courage can make a difference.

5 out of 5 stars A beautiful book!.......2003-09-03

This book is worth buying twice just to support the author. Fantastic writing, illustrating, everything. As soon as I picked it up I was instantly drawn to its pages and once I began I couldn't put it down-and it's a book for kids! In any case, it's a book all pre-schoolers will cherish. It's about love and family and sticking together to overcome adversity. I can't wait for Barbara Joosse's next book. She's doing something great. And as always, I leave you with my favorite picks: most creative, The Butterfly: A Fable (Singh); most engaging, The Alchemist (Coelho); most interesting, Life of Pi (Martel); most enlightening, 9-11 (Chomsky); most thrilling, The Lovely Bones: A Novel (Sebold); and finally, the most creative, engaging, interesting, enlightening and thrilling book of all, The Little Prince (Saint-Exupery). These are the books I'd recommend to my family, friends, students, and wife. There are many more, trust me, but these are the first that come to mind (for having left an impact slight or proud as it may be). If you have any questions, queries, or comments, or maybe even a title you think I should add to my list, please feel free to e-mail me. I'm always open to a good recommendation. Thanks for reading my brief but hopefully helpful review. Happy reading. Donald S. Buckland

5 out of 5 stars Powerfully Evocative and Compelling............2002-09-04

"Sometimes, Mama and me look down at the street and pretend it's not the city. We shut out eyes so only a crack is open, lookin' through our eyelshes, and pretend we live on the moon. The lights we see? They're stars, as many as the sky can hold. And sirens? That's wild wolves howlin' at the moon. If there's shots fired, we say it's the light of the stars crackin' the darkness..." So begins Barbara Joosse's nameless young narrator's story of the dangerous and tenuous life in the inner city. When his beloved brother, Richard, stops coming home at night, he and his mother realize he's become a gang banger. "We can't pretend no more," she says. "We gotta be strong now." His mother implores him, "Don't you be hanging' out with those bangers, Richard. Don't. Be somebody for this world." But Richard is caught up in the life, "walkin' that walk, like he's King Stuff." When Richard comes home injured and bandaged, Mama and Richard's little brother hatch a plan, a plan to take back the neighborhood. "We call 'em Peace Walks. Every night now, there's family on the street. We take turns walkin' the night. When it's my turn, I shut my eyes so only a slit is open, and I look through my eyelashes. I see streetlights, like before, but now I see flashlights, too. Stars crackin' the darkness." Ms Joosse's bittersweet picture book, geared to little brothers and sisters, "the stars in the darkness," is neither judgemental nor sentimental, but truthful and filled with hope. Her evocative text, rich in imagery and magic, is compelling, written in realistic language and complemented by Gregory Christie's powerfully bold and expressive illustrations. Together word and art paint a vivid portrait of life in the inner city, family love, and the courage and strength to try and make a difference. With an Author's Note about the real Richard, to enhance the story and help open important discussions, and a comprehensive list of resources on gang prevention, Stars In The Darkness is an inspiring narrative that shouldn't be missed, and definitely one of the best new books of 2002. Kudos to Joosse and Christie.

5 out of 5 stars A profoundly moving and hopeful book.......2002-04-21

Author Joosse chooses a tough subject and writes about it in the most touching manner. The love of a family, a mother and a younger brother, are not enough to keep a boy from joining a gang. Even though Richard tries to hide his gang activities from them, the young narrator of the story tells us "I know what I know." The boy and his mother come up with a plan that involves their neighbors, making them true "stars in the darkness." Every parent and child will find in this powerful book a way to connect to the feelings, fears, and hopes of the families whose lives are affected by gangs.

5 out of 5 stars LOOKING AT ALZHEIMER'S AS A CAREGIVER.......2002-06-25

"Old Timers" should be on the suggested reading list for anyone seeking information about Alzheimer's disease and all of its ramifications for the family of the victim. NO ONE knows like someone who had been there and that is certainly Jack Turley. It is an easy read that pulls at the heart strings.

4 out of 5 stars A Shared Journey.......2002-06-14

I received a copy of Mr. Turley's book from my cousin. It was sent to me since my mother is on her journey into dementia. Even though she has not been diagnosed with Alzheimer's, many of her symptoms are similar. At the time I read Mr. Turley's book, I was feeling very isolated, confused and frustrated. I did not need a factual rendition of what I was facing. I needed a personal connection. After reading Mr. Turley's book, I no longer felt as if I was the only person dealing with the overwhelming emotions associated with watching a loved one sink into dementia. My feelings of guilt were greatly alleviated, just by sharing what Mr. Turley had gone through. I found many of the decisions he had to make were similar to ones I was in the process of having to make. I also appreciated having a book that was honest, straightforward and did not hedge on the turmoil involved with the caregiver. What I appreciated most, was his underlying theme that his life continued but with the added burdens. That is the most important message one can send. Those of us that have to stand and watch still have to continue with what we do. We cannot become consumed with our loved ones decline. That is also the hardest aspect of dementia with which to deal.

5 out of 5 stars YES! He REALLY understands!.......2002-06-14

OLD TIMERS is a compelling story, brutally honest, written with occasional humor and dedicated love. I found I consistently nodded my head in agreement and thought, "YES! He REALLY understands!" I sent OLD TIMERS to my cousin. She is going through absolute misery with her mother who lives in a different state and has Alzheimer's Disease. My cousin was depressed and didn't want to read the book. Having just returned from a visit, she was VERY tired and "had ENOUGH of the subject." But, she DID read it and called to say that OLD TIMERS helped her so very much. She found out that others had problems and feelings similar to hers. Now my cousin does not feel so alone when she is dealing with difficult decisions and tender feelings. I highly recommend OLD TIMERS for church and community support discussion groups.

5 out of 5 stars A highly articulate personal commentary.......2002-05-07

Mr. Turley's superlative accounting of his mother's "One way journey into darkness" has struck a nerve. For I too watched as my own father left us as the result of this dreaded disease called Alzheimer's. Excellent informative reading.

5 out of 5 stars Straight Forward-How It Is Approach To Alzheimer's.......2002-04-05

Jack Turley shared journey through heart felt intimate moments answered many questions and lessons in approaching the position of being a careprovider to a family member with alzheimer's. The sharing of his beloved mother suffering through many challenging issues and choices was extremely impactful to me being a careprovider for my parents and a psychoanalytic-dynamic psycotherapist in Los Angeles. I have recommended this book to my friends and clients and have received nothing but outstanding comments and a Warm-Thank You. This book contributions tremendously to the humanistic understanding of Alzheimer.

        Book Description

Although the fiction of Joseph Conrad has been studied extensively from a psychological perspective, a major theme seemingly neglected is that of ambivalence in the relations between fathers and sons. This volume contains Rising's Freudian and post-Freudian analysis of father/son interactions, at either the family or the social level, in Conrad's work. Defining the father as any older male with power and influence over a younger one, Rising examines wide thematic variations that show Conrad's obsessive concern with paternity-- as an object either of fear and hatred or of longing--and in turn addresses the theme of Conrad's most successful fiction: the protagonist's struggle to find (or keep) his place in a world of men. In his fiction, Conrad uses an array of fathers and paternal types to achieve a constantly shifting perspective on filial relationships. In a panorama of actual or potential conflict, the author provides portraits of Conrad's father and son, and shows what chance of accommodation he offers. In chapters on the prototype of the father, the jeaopardy of the son on land, and the immunity of the son at sea, the book discusses Conrad's use of an Oedipal compromise, a solution he abandoned in later works. Ultimately, although he appears to have sought new avenues of reconciliation in his last novels, the author demonstrates that the father/son antagonism is never fully resolved in his fiction. In addition to the primary chapters and epilogue, the work contains a bibliography and an index. This book will be an important reference tool for courses in English and psychology, as well as an important addition to academic and public libraries.

5 out of 5 stars Light Beyond the Darkness, How I Healed My Suicide Son After.......2001-05-22

Dore Deverell has written a remarkable book describing both her and her son Richard's transformtion and healing after he committed suicide. This book shows how, through diligence and faith, spiritual darkness can be transmuted into wisdom, energy and new life. An eloquent and straightforward narrative tells a story in two parts: a painful, oppressive life in suburban Los Angeles spanning decades, and, after a turning point coinciding with Richard's tragic death, a spiritual path, realized and fortified through anthroposophy, the modern wisdom and spiritual-scientific methods hearlded by Dr. Rudolf Steiner (1861 - 1925).

          3 out of 5 stars A good reading............2000-08-06

This a good reading. Good, not great, not bad. Deverell's writing is clear and concise, and she keeps your attention. The only problem I have with this book is that there is too much emphasis on other books. She spends a great deal of time referring to other authors and experts in the field, and I would have enjoyed her spending more time on her own story.

Set in Jerusalem in 446 B. C., Descent to Darkness recounts the story of a man’s spiritual journey, which takes him down into the depths of darkness and despair. The man is Phinehas, and he was born to Eli, a prophet of God, who was sent to the people during the reign of the Persian King Darius to call them to repentance. As were all of God’s prophets before him, Eli was murdered by evil men; then Phinehas’ brothers and sisters were sold into slavery to pay the family’s debt’s, and his mother died of a broken heart; but God preserved Phinehas’ life. Now Satan, who hated Eli and his whole family and had them killed by his servants living in Jerusalem, wanted his son dead also. Since the prophet’s son harbored hatred and outrage in his heart and blamed God for his misfortune, he was Satan’s easy prey. Despite many warnings from his godly wife and friends, he let himself be controlled by his bitterness and eventually succumbed to the devil’s temptations, forsook his God, and took a path that eventually led him to great personal tragedy.

          5 out of 5 stars Bowker Review.......2005-09-12

Kenneth John Marks has created a master narrative about the life of Phinehas, the son of the prophet Eli. This story begins in the city of Jerusalem with Satan's attempt to lure the protagonist into the ways of hatred and sin through his agent Judas. While slipping into the ever-widening morass of sin and debauchery, Phinehas feels the pangs of remorse and guilt. But destiny decides otherwise and he has to suffer from numerous dangers. In the absence of God's Grace, the attempts by his beloved wife Esther and other faithful followers fail to convince him about the need for giving up anger and allowing God's Grace to fill his heart. Drawing from numerous sources - mythological, theological, and historical, the writer spins an interesting tale of intrigue and conspiracy set in a past age but still manages not to instill a feeling of déjà vu in the reader. The secret lies in his ability to fuse myth and reality into a heady dose of inspiring and moving work of art that combines theology and archaeology. The author's eclectic erudition holds him in good stead while creating a psychological and religious novel. It is a must read for anyone who cares about human origin, present and future and wants to understand their Creator and their religion.

            Book Description

For anyone who wants to understand the full story that lies within a glass of wine, this book opens up the inner secrets of the geology, the vineyards, the wines, and the growers of the northern Rhône Valley in France. Home to the spicy Syrah, or Shiraz, and the floral Viognier grapes, the northern Rhône Valley is one of France's oldest wine-growing regions; its appellations include Hermitage, Côte-Rôtie, Condrieu, Crozes-Hermitage, St-Joseph, and Château-Grillet. With evocative descriptions and marvelous insights, this accessible, elegant book, the culmination of more than thirty years following the Rhône, is a comprehensive and authoritative survey of the various estates, winemakers, and their wines.
Taking a deeper look at the northern Rhône than Livingstone-Learmonth's highly regarded previous volumes on the Rhône Valley, this revised and up-to-date edition covers more producers and includes more in-depth information on the various terroirs, the histories of the wines, and the methods for making the wines. Livingstone-Learmonth concentrates on letting the producers explain their outlook and methods and includes much local color.

The Wines of the Northern Rhône includes
¥Assessments of thousands of wines, with guide dates onwhen to drink and how long to age them
¥Winemakers' views on what foods best accompany their wines
¥New vineyard maps for each appellation
¥Detailed descriptions by growers discussing the effect of different soils on their wines
¥Precise information on how each domaine makes its wines
¥New research on the historical links between Hermitage and Bordeaux

5 out of 5 stars Great book for those who like northern Rhone wines.......2007-07-28

Wonderfully informative. This book has become my most trusted reference for the northern Rhone. It is well written and informative. Mades me feel I am there. While about wine the information about people and places adds an import aspect. I bought two more and gave them to friends I knew would enjoy all the details and great information.

5 out of 5 stars discover the wines of the northern rhone.......2007-03-15

John Livingstone is an old and good friend of mine, and after reading (parts) of his book I am really anxious to try Condrieu and Hermitage wines. So far I always stick to Bourgogne, Bordeaux and Loire wines. I cannot imagine how he con review all those different wines in one life. This book is like a bible.

            5 out of 5 stars Fabulous.......2006-11-23

After reading this book I changed my itinerary for my recent tour of Provence/Cotes du Rhone to include three days in the Northern Rhone. I am so glad I did. This book was so helpful during my visit. I carried it with me. After reading this book, the vignerons become your new best friends. It also gives a real sense of place. The detailed reviews of vintages is fabulous. I'm now collecting the wines of the Northern Rhone.

5 out of 5 stars If You Love The N. Rhones, You Need This Book.......2006-07-24

Livingstone-Learmonth does a knock up job, has meticulously researched and what's more--- knows that you should make your drinking decisions by looking into the vigneron or negoc behind the wine and the way they work and not by looking at a score.

Who knew that a guidebook to the Rhone could not only be a necessary resource book but also a hell of a read? This is an in-depth and entertaining insight into a region that produces the ne plus ultra of syrah (yes, viognier and the other whites, but it's all about the syrah, isn't it?).

5 out of 5 stars The Wines of the Northern Rhone.......2006-03-01

Every serious wine lover will find The Wines of the Northern Rhone indispensable. It is profound in its knowledge of the soil, grape, vineyard, and the wine makers of the Rhone. John Livingstone-Learmonth's writing is lucid and sensitive. It is not only a scholarly study of reference but also one that will be consulted to select a wine for dinner, for purchase and for cellaring. It is also a wonderful tourist guide of the northern Rhone valley.
