Pretty Disappointing.......2007-09-15
Although the premise of the series continues to hit creative paydirt with it's intriguing view on dystopia and commentary on the adaptiveness of humanity, Vaughan continues to wield his pen like a sledgehammer when it comes to character development and dynamics. Although this is not a comic about superheroes, everybody talks like Batman. The twists are predictable, and I tire of reading page after page of exposition justifying the actions of each and every character in the book.
Then again, it would be easier to read about them if any of the characters were actually interesting. Instead, this story suffers from a breadth of characters who sole identifying features are the fact that 1) character is woman and 2) character has tragic past.
I held back on previous issues because I wanted to see the finale. Though there's one trade left, this book is where we "learn" what happened to all the men. It was pretty disappointing. And seeing Yorick satirize the comic itself in the concluding scene of the story was intolerable. It was as if Vaughan were in that train car, saying, "Yeah, I'm pretty tired of this predictable BS too."
finally some resolution!.......2007-08-22
I enjoyed Motherland tremendously - much more than the previous two collections. Finally, we are getting some real answers to the cause of the "gender-cide," and not just seemingly randome travels and flash backs, which I felt really bogged down the series. While it seems clear things are coming to a head, and I will regret the end of this well written series, I would rather that than have it drag on too long. Highly recommended for upper teen to mature readers.
Change is coming........2007-08-01
Brian K. Vaughan, Y: The Last Man: Motherland (Vertigo, 2007)
Big changes for the crew in this volume. Rose has been exposed as an Australian spy, but what's anyone going to do about it when she's on her deathbed? And, in the opening scene, we get hit with the biggest upending in the series yet: the team plan to split up, with Alison staying in Asia to continue her cloning work while Yorick and 355 head for Paris to find Beth. But now they're not the only game in town, as Hero and the band from Kansas are trying to track Yorick down, while everyone's being pursued by the Israeli army... the volume ends with two stories not really related to the main storyline, "The Obituarist" and "Tragicomic". The former is about the gravediggers who plan Yorick's mother's funeral, while the latter concerns the first two comic book artists to arise after the plague. (A bit self-referential, that?) As usual, the series is great. Vaughan is doing work that stands out even during what seems to be the new golden age of comics. ****
Losing Steam, But Hinting At Great Things To Come.......2007-07-25
In case you're not familiar with Brian K. Vaughan's Y: The Last Man, the premise is that a catastrophic plague has wiped every man on the planet but one, Yorick Brown. For an inexplicable reason, Yorick and his pet monkey, Ampersand, were spared. Now Yorick desperately wants to traverse a planet in chaos as women work to establish order once more so that he can reunite with his girlfriend. He travels with Agent 355, who has been charged with protecting Yorick, and the scientist Allison Mann, who tirelessly works to determine what made Yorick and Ampersand different from anything else with the Y chromosome.
Motherland is the ninth volume in this graphic novel series. When Y first started, it was unlike anything else I'd ever read in comic books. Action-packed with a real sense of plot and purpose, Vaughan broke barriers with every installment. However, on this volume, I feel things are starting to drag out a bit. Still an enjoyable read, but it's definitely treading water compared to earlier volumes.
But, be that as it may, I have every faith in the world that Vaughan will regain steam as he comes to the conclusion of this series. It was understood from the get go that this was a finite title, and I really think it will be a joy to read from start to finish once it's concluded.
For those of you unfamiliar with Brian K. Vaughan, he is a master storyteller in the world of comic books, but he's also the guy they brought in to get the television show LOST back on track when it waned a bit last season. Did you notice a discernable improvement in LOST towards the end of last season? You can thank BKV for that.
Please realize that Y is not your mainstream comic book such as Superman or Batman. It is a comic book, yes, but it is more like the HBO of the comic book world. There is adult language at times and adult themes. However, if you've ever been interested in seeing sequential art at its best, give Y a try.
The SAGA has more twists.......2007-07-17
For those who have read the series this far this will be unnecessary. I love this series and highly recommend it to anyone. The only 'issue' I have is that it appears, to me, that they are now using 'filler' with a twist. I generally don't have problems with stories that are inserted just for their own sake, i.e. they are good stories (the story, text and graphics are as good as ever). However, belief can be 'suspended' for only so long before the yawn factor sets in and plot-twists (giving nothing away) can only take so many turns before you think you are watching a day-time soap.
In summary, fans and long-time readers will buy - because they have to - but casual readers COULD consider buying one 'particular' episode/chapter and not really miss anything. As to which episode to buy, well that would be telling.......

Book Description
Maya has not been back to Kerala, where she was born, for three years. A lively fifteen-year-old, Maya would rather be with her New York friends, but her mother wants her to embrace her Indian heritage and to appreciate the great love and sacrifice of the relatives who raised her until she was four.
Sanjay uncle and Reema auntie and their daughter Brindha welcome her. But it is Maya's grandmother Ammamma, Maya's first "mother," around whom her summer revolves. Over the course of three months, Maya comes to terms with her dual loyalties and learns the cause of the estrangement she feels between her mother and herself.
Motherland is not only a beautiful coming-of-age novel but also the poignant story of a young girl who discovers that her home-her motherland-can be anywhere.

This is a joke, trust me guys!.......2007-04-30
I wouldn't even give this a star if some-one payed me too. Like people have said in the reviews before mine, how do they even publish this stuff?!?! This having a very very very predictable end is the least of this lifeless, bad characterized, plotless and pretty much flat piece of writing's problem. I wouldn't have even bothered with the first page if I hadn't been so curious.
Not only was the narrative soo bad, how inaccurate this was just shocked me. Take it from a Indian who knows her culture people, this is not India.....well some of it is, such as the food, but other than that, I don't know where "miss amature writer" got her ideas from. If maya does go to India for a 3 month holiday, then she doesn't go to proper India, but some backward village from the dark ages.
Infact, I'm surprised some-one hasn't sued Vineeta Vijayaraghavan yet for rideculing their culture. And what's even more astonishing is that this got published in the first place.
If you just want a good old "coming of age book" then I suggest just going back to jaculine wilsons. However, if you are curious to find out more about India, then I suggest these titles: The conch bearer,Mirror of fire and dreaming, Shiva's fire.
Great book.. :-).......2007-01-09
i have just been to india for a holiday and i thought this book was fantastic! i really enjoyed reading this book and the plot was exciting and unexpected ! :-)
Good Indian feel..........2003-07-12
Maya returns to India, her homeland, after her parents find an excuse to send her there for the summer. It's been three years since 15 year old Maya has been to India, the land where she lived as a child for several years with her grandmother. The book is descriptive, and makes you feel like you are transported there. Details are explained when the reader encounters something that may be hard for a non-Indian to understand. There are two main storylines, one dealing with the government that I didn't really care for, and one dealing with the larger story of Maya's connecting to her Indian self. The book got slighly more boring as it went on however.
Simple but moving.......2002-05-15
An American never feels more American than when he or she is in a foreign country. In my experience, this is even more true when one "is from" that foreign country. After years of living in the US as a minority, one expects to return to the motherland with a sense of homecoming, a sense of immediate belonging. However, while family and ethnic ties do give you that, there is also, inevitably, a prickly feeling of distinction. Sometimes it's felt in small things, such as in an increased sensitivity to mosquitos or lower dietary tolerances. Other times, it's experienced in a clash of worldviews--over issues such as class, gender roles, or international politics. "Motherland" captures this tension beautifully, in a simple, but moving story about an American teenager who spends a summer in southern India.
I was surprised by how much I loved this novel. This is not a book of unexpected plot twists or particularly perilous situations. The characters are intriguing, but not unusual. The setting is exotic, but rather limited. However, the author's honest depiction of relationships, conversations and observations seduce you into the story and refuse to let you go. I find myself still thinking about this novel in random moments throughout my day.
Simple story of a teen's growing up--.......2002-05-14
I picked this book up, enjoyed it and gave it to my teenage daughter to read. It was a good discussion book for moms/daughters. Neither of us could figure out the hostility in some of the earlier reviews--what's going on in Boston? This book captured the conflicting emotions that fifteen year-olds experience. It may not be a monumental work but it is an unprentious little book--an enjoyable, easy read. It made us interested to know more about India and provoked some interesting discussions about relationships and loss.

Books are great..........2006-11-21
I have all the parts (Fellowship of the ring, Return of the King & The Two Towers). I have loved the audiobooks.
I only have 1 problem with the audiobooks and that is when I converted the discs so I could listen to them on my ipod, the names of each track varied.
On some it ists the name of teh chapter and followed by a number(part of the chapter, others it names the book and the track number without the chapter title name, and on others it says the track number...
They should have been consistent with the track names.
Lord of the Rings for car trips?.......2006-11-19
It's hard to add more than other reviewers have done. Most of the comments are right-on, but I think it's nice for a potential buyer to hear a lot of people voicing their opinions. This is a long set but perfect for a devoted fan. I love listening to it while doing other things or in the car on the way to work, probably also for an airplane. Rob Inglis did a great job, and while a few of the female voices are a bit odd, you soon forget about such things when you get wrapped up in the story.
He adds the right emphasis to the right parts and I think his voice is well-suited to this work. For hardcore LotR fans, it's hard to find something that meets our high expectations as this is a simply amazing work of art that will last for years - it's hard to find a voice that meets every (somewhat unreal, I think) expectation. But Rob Inglis comes extremely close.
It's a Good buy.......2006-06-03
It is a nice audio book. It does have it's flaws though.
1. It does not offer maps or any drawings. I have searched online for some, but only find blurry copies. Considering the maps and drawings are held so highly in admiration... it kinda sucks not to have them
2. the acting of the narrator is not the greatest. There were parts when the book notes "he yells" and the narrator speaks in a calm and clear character voice. It's kind of funny sometimes.
3. many of the narrator's "attempted" character voices sound alike. All the elf kind sound the same, even the women sound like males. All the hobbits pretty much sound the same, except Sam who has this manly deep voice, which often sounds like Aragon. Often the narrator accidentally mergers one character voice into another by accident. So a hobbit will be speaking then all the sudden he sounds like Aragon or Gandolf.
But outside of that the audio book is great. These "problems" are small. Since the un-abridged reading offers the names of who is talking and their emotions that go along with it, you can make out the story just fine. It just takes a little more imagination and you can alter their voices in your head to sound like what you want to hear. I would highly reccomend it, that is until someone figures out they can get a better actor or has the mind to hire multiple actors to fulfill the part.
There is nothing funnier than hearing a deep manly voice trying to immitate a woman singing
Brilliant, and well worth the money!.......2006-04-15
I am not a "Total Ringophile", like some out there, but I have read the books three times and loved them. I lashed out and purchased this 46 CD set as I spend a lot of time on the commute to work. It is brilliant! Each CD has approx 15 "tracks" on it so that if you miss a bit as your mind wanders (as it does in the car..) you can just bounce back one track and hear that bit again, no problems. Rob Inglis does a great job, no question. It has added a new dimension to my experince of Tolkien's masterpiece, and I highly recommend it to all. BRILLIANT !
Ingles does a fantastic job.......2005-11-26
I did not realize what a wonderful job that Ingles had done in this reading until I began listening to other audio books. Ingles manages to give each character a distinct voice and as you proceed, you recognize immediately who it is that is speaking.
After many years, Tolkien's work stands alone as the only sci-fi/fantasy story that puts the subtlety of language and culture equal to, if not above, the drama. Ingles interesting voices and care with the language of Tolkien make this a most worthy represenation of the timeless classic.
Book Description
Presented here in hardcover with a beautiful jacket chosen through a global fan poll, J.R.R. Tolkien's epic masterpiece, The Lord of the Rings, has been hailed throughout the world as one of the greatest adventure stories ever written. Millions of readers have celebrated this exciting tale of hobbits, wizards, men, dwarves, and elves in a land called Middle-earth. Now millions of filmgoers have embraced the blockbuster motion picture trilogy that has fired the imaginations of a new generation.
Returning to Hobbiton after an absence of many years, the wizard Gandalf quickly sought out Bag End, the home of his old and dear friend the hobbit Bilbo Baggins. It was the morning of Bilbo's one hundred and eleventh birthday, and a party of special magnificence was planned for that night. The old hobbit had been plagued by the incessant attentions of unwanted visitors, well-wishers, and distant relations, prompting him to hang out a sign on his front gate warning "No admittance except on party business." It was in this grumpy state of mind that Bilbo, completely unprepared for the joyous reunion that awaited him, stomped to the door to answer Gandalf's knock.
These unique, limited-edition bookend sculptures have been hand-cast in heavyweight polystone and hand-painted to the highest standards by the artists of Sideshow/Weta, a unique partnership between museum-quality collectibles manufacturer Sideshow, Inc. and Weta Workshop of New Zealand, the artisans responsible for the conceptualization, prosthetics, makeup effects, weapons, armor, and miniatures for Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings film trilogy.

LOTR bookend gift set.......2007-01-26
The bookends are made by Sideshow Weta which happens to be the best LOTR company on the market. They are very collectible and attractive to look at. The book speaks for itself. Top quality for both items and attractive and protective packaging.
Great Deal!.......2005-02-03
The Editorial Review does not say much about the item, only that millions of readers enjoyed the great story the Lord of the Rings and "millions of filmgoers have embraced the blockbuster motion picture trilogy." But we all know that already.
So, I decided to describe each of the items in detail. Bookend sculptures are 6.5" H x 6" W x 5.25" D (One bookend) and weight around 8 lbs. The quality is amazing and the fans will be very pleased with this set. Gandalf and Bilbo look same as in the movie. The book is also very nice. This one volume hard cover edition has a beautiful jacket and high print quality which makes it easy to read.
Together, the book and sculptures make up a perfect gif to any Tolkien fan, a gift for your friend or yourself. And it is definitely worth the money because the book alone will cost around 30 dollars and bookend sculptures cost 60 on the Sideshow website. So, get this awesome gift set while you still can!
Wonderful Quality!.......2004-02-26
I bought it, and fell in love with the quality so much that I ended up buying two more for my sons as gifts when they get older. Hopefully they will love the book as much as I do!
Great Purchase & Lifetime Treasure for Me (and family)!.......2004-02-14
I ordered this set for my own birthday present to myself and finally got it in the mail during Christmas (way before my birthday). I am in love with it and loved it seeing it still in the box. It was totally worth getting and fragile due to its properties of composition. Meaning, I am taking good care of it and it is sitting on my bedroom dresser right now holding up stuff. Worth getting for any "rings fan." They'd love it! Get it before they stop making it or something. I own this and many LOTR merchandise. Hope this helped you in some way.

Customer Reviews:
Great Escapism.......2007-07-22
Compared to other reviewer, I actually found the Hobbit the best of the bunch, despite it being less 'professional' as far as sound goes, its older but they SOUND like Hobbits in it, and it has the feel and smell of Hobbit Holes and magic. Simplicity is often best in these, the narrator and main Hobbit have great personalities and voices.
As for rest of the audio stories, more polished but i found the sounds not as amazing, but still they do the job and are well worth the listen. Gollum is great, fantastic job. I would have liked more sounds in the stories, but they dont take away from the storyline, so its no loss.
All in all enjoyable, tho i listen to these things so fast Id prob go for the used and cheaper versions than the full price, tho you'll listen to these time and again so its still an investment.
Try the Chronicles of Narnia if you liked these!
An enjoyable audio experience!.......2006-05-07
Summary: This box set takes the BBC's versions of J.R.R. Tolkien's classics: "The Hobbit" and "The Lord of the Rings trilogy" and sticks them together into one convenient place. These are abridged versions of the books, and so they don't contain certain [relatively unimportant] parts and characters; for example Tom Bombadil isn't here. Each book is roughly 4 hours long and is spread over 4-5 CDs. The audio books were originally done by British actors and are all over twenty years old.
Packaging: The four audio books come in a large black box with a cool hologram picture on the front. Each book is in a triple CD case (Think: the case-size for the CD version of the Beatles White Album.) with art by John Howe (John Howe was also a major contributor to the Lord of the Rings movie art design.) covering the front of each. There is also a hand-drawn map of "Wilderland" included; unfortunately the map is mostly just of the Misty Mountains and Mirkwood, thus it can really only be used to find places that appear in The Hobbit.
It would have been nice if there had been a few more extras included, such as perhaps a booklet explaining a few things, or a map of the entire Middle Earth. However, I'm being fairly nitpicky concerning these things. What really disappointed me by the packaging was the fact that there is nothing included which lists the names (Chapters) of the tracks. So, if you were trying to find a place on one of the audio CDs that corresponds with a place in one of the books, you would have a very difficult time doing so. It really doesn't make much sense and I don't know why tracks and chapters weren't listed on the CD cases or somewhere else in the packaging.
Audio Quality: The audio quality for these audio books leaves a few things to be desired. Some of the sound effects and music samples sound very dated and/or slightly fuzzy, esp. in The Hobbit. Also, the voices aren't always clear, with some not loud enough, and others with an echo sound to them. Furthermore, while the script music is very good and the musicians are very capable, the recordings sound like they are being played off of a record and not a CD; they just aren't as clear and clean as I would like. Still, while the audio quality isn't great, it also isn't terrible; in other words: it generally gets the job done. (Besides, these recordings are all over 20 years old, and a few audio quality problems should be expected.)
Voice Acting: This is definitely the high point of this audio book collection. The BBC has brought together a very talented cast and many are well-known British actors. Ian Holm plays Bilbo here (As he did in Peter Jackson's movies.), and he brings a lot of life into his character. The fellowship also sounds very good, as each actor makes you believe in the goal(s) of the quest.
Version: I was disappointed when I initially learned these weren't unabridged audio books. However, you'll find that what they did cut out was relatively unimportant, and I never felt like they were cutting something out that is critical to the main story. Besides, most people listening to this have probably already read the books anyways and already know about the little characters and pieces of history that were left out. Think of these as expanded and more accurate versions of the movies, rather then shorter versions of the books. If you do, you'll be a lot happier with this set.
Conclusion: Once you get past the mostly minor problems of this set, you'll find it is a very enjoyable audio experience with lots of excitement and excellent storytelling. The good far outweighs the bad here, and I really think these are the best audio book versions of these books. Trust me, if you are a fan of Tolkien, then you should enjoy this convenient set. These CDs are great for long trips in the car, and both adults and kids will enjoy them. I recommended this to any fan of good literature!

Tears Flow thru Mars Channels........2005-10-28
Minotauro is an old and prestigious sci-fi collection that made available to Spanish speaking public many genre classic.
The collection started with Bradbury's "Martian Chronicles" and continued with great opus as Wyndham's "The Day of the Triffids" or Sturgeon's "More Than Human". The editorial house has recently re-edited in a smaller and modern pocket-book format most of the titles available.
The bonus for this book is Jorge Luis Borge's prologue.
"The Martian Chronicles" (1950) was Bradbury's second book to be published and a consecrative one. The author received immediate attention from sci-fi lovers, publishers and general public.
This book is not really a novel, but a collection of short stories describing Mars' colonization, from 1999 till 2026 where Bradbury's future is already our past! Nevertheless it is a mesmerizing piece of literature.
Bradbury writes in poetical prose style. Most of these tales transmits a deep sense of melancholy, as if the author has already passed judgment over Human Kind and found it guilty; guilty of greed, selfishness, short-sightedness and ruthlessness. In other words the same sins showed whenever different human cultures get abruptly in touch.
The initial stories describe the ill-fated first Human expeditions and their weird relationship with the Martians. "The Third Expedition" is really touching and chilling at the same time.
From then on, Humans are left alone with all Mars at their disposition for better or worse.
Colonization start in earnest as described from "The Settlers" to "The Off Season" while in Earth atomic war menace evolve into actual devastating war.
Bradbury proposes the reader different approaches to the subject: phantasmagoric as in "The Martian" or performing homage to Edgar Allan Poe and criticizing censorship as in "Usher II".
The last tales describe Mars almost depleted of Human life with poignant sadness.
This is not hard sci-fi, it is almost oneiric fantasy, so do not expect strict logic. Relax and let emotions flow free!

EXCELENTE!!!.......2001-07-21
Simply a Classic.......1998-04-02
The Martian Chronicles are not intended to be a novel. Many were written with no conception of being tied to the others. The book is dissapointing if read as a novel. Taken as book of short stories, the book is a classic. The second and third stories, depicting the second and third failed Mars landing are moving. "When Softly come the Rains" a story told near the end is simply unforgettable. While not quite as powerful as the stories in Bradbury's "Illustrated Man" The Martian Chronicles is a first class read.
Master of Fantasy?.......1998-03-30
Novels are written everyday by countless authors. Some are tasteful and some are not. Ray Bradbury, known for his skillful blending of fancy and satire, terror and tenderness, wonder and fantasy, has written many novels which have made him the master of fantasy and the greatest living science-fiction writer in the world. The Martian Chronicles begin on Mars where first contact is made by the Second Expedition, led by Captain Jonathan Williams. The Second Expedition is unsuccessful like the
one before. The missions end in terror for both crews. No one knows if the First crew even made it to Mars; however the second crew is shot in cold blood by the very Martians they had hoped to communicate with. The Third Expedition also meets the some fate as the other two, but this time there are survivors who pave the way for the colonization of Mars. The Martian civilizations lay in ruins caused by disease brought on by Humans who came to settle the new world. As The Great War breaks out on Earth, giant explosions can be seen as far away as Mars. People of Mars rush back to their home planet Earth to protect their nation against others who might want to destroy it. All is lost, and both Worlds lay in ruins.
The author leads you to a unique twist in the last sentence of the novel. It reads, "The
martians stared back up at them for a long, long silent time from the rippling water." One of the
last remaining human families escape to Mars, where they make their new home. As they watch their reflection in the rippling water, they know that from this day forth they are truly Martians.
Bradbury's science-fiction novels are really a cluster of short stories which make up a
novel. The 26 different chronicles share nothing except they either take place on Mars or Earth.
They really are a cluster of short stories which describe the history of Mars, starting from the year 1999 and ending in the year 2026.
It was a great disappointment from what one expects of this author. This novel does not live up to hi!s unique writing ability. The Martian Chronicles starts strong but dies as it jumps from one chronicle to another, a poor ending to a great start. The Martian Chronicles is one fantasy-story which a die-hard science-fiction fan can do without. This writer owes apologies to everyone. It's the least one should expect after reading this novel.
