Book Description

A bestseller in Hungary and Germany, a sharp and delightful social satire that pits the relentless pursuit of wealth against the fickleness of life in a capitalist culture.

Anna Levay, a widow, is a secondary-school teacher in a small resort city who is close to retirement. One evening after her bath, Anna discovers a strange light floating about her head. It is a halo, like that of a saint, but Anna is not a particularly good or religious person; she is, in fact, an atheist. She sets about trying to conceal her halo, but soon realizes that only the truly innocent, small children and animals, can see it. But the concurrent power to heal and produce miracles is visible to a less exclusive audience, and once the greedy mayor and physician of the town discover Anna's new gifts, they set about using her to their advantage: they build a luxury health resort and line their pockets. çgota Bozai's novel, first published in Hungarian in 1998, is a stunning portrait of a world disposed to depravity in the pursuit of wealth, and of the marginalization of a person of conscience, or at least conscientiousness, in a rapaciously capitalistic society.

4 out of 5 stars Quirky.......2006-12-18

Unfortunately, I didn't have time to read this in long stretches so I think I missed a few things, but I thought the premise was interesting and original, and came off well even in translation. It is not an "active" book; be prepared for a slow, detailed, read. It reminded me in some ways of Ibsen's play "An Enemy of the People". I will probably read it again when I have more time.

4 out of 5 stars The least likely saint.......2006-12-05

Anna Levay is a quiet person. You might not even notice her if you passed her on the street. She's heavy-ish and sixty-ish, a widowed schoolteacher with a cordially estranged son. She's the terror of her classroom, but a fond memory to two (going on three) generations of students. She's one of the little people in a pervasively corrupt village where only the big people do more than scrape by. Like everyone else in her world she muddles by well enough, just hoping not to attract attention from anyone important.

And, quite abruptly, she's a saint or something like it. That embarassing halo was her first clue. It wouldn't go away, but at least no one else seemed to notice. Then the miracles started piling up unintentionally, including mysterious behaviors of animals when she came near, magical (and overly personal) growth of her plants, water into wine (not the done thing in a school environment), and miracle cures. But Anna is a sensible woman with little time for miracles, and a vague wish that they'd just go away. Sensibly, she seeks out a doctor to see if her sainthood can be cured - not that she's so explicit about a state that she barely believe in herself. The doctor, however, is one of the town's venal in-crowd, and quickly realizes the commercial potential of her miraculous cures.

Agota Bozai's story is a gentle stroll through the life of this ordinary woman as extraordinary things start to happen around her. She's honest, unassuming, and easy to like. As a result, she make the perfect counter to the petty power trading, embezzling, and scamming so rampant in the post-Soviet world. It's not a satire, so much as a wry look business-as-usual when something and someone very unusual appear among them. The right reader will find a lot to like in this little book.

5 out of 5 stars Hungarian Fantasy Realism, with Religious Overtones! .......2006-05-30

While taking a bath, a 59 year old school widowed teacher, notices a peculiar golden aura around her head, and at first tries to hide this halo..Eventually, she realizes that hardly anyone notices it. While wandering the beach, thousands of fish flock to the beach for a real fisherman's holiday. But the hotel/tourist industry, and local politicians investigate this very strange occurence. Even strange things also happen in the local church, and the priest is not sure whether a miracle really happens or not. Finally, a doctor notices her very unique powers, and the powers that be open a posh and expensive medical/ health center. The rest is a fun page turner with many bizarre turns, a mix of pointilistic realism, and the possible supernatural. Very enjoyble way to spend a few hours!

3 out of 5 stars Should Have Been A Short Story.......2005-05-23

The book delivers a good feeling of what it is like to live in a former communistic country. The story line, which is that of a woman with the power to cure, gets old fast. The book should have been a simple short story.

From the supplier: The media can gain greater credibility and improve its tarnished image by admitting news reporting mistakes immediately and holding themselves to the same standards of honesty as they hold others. NBC's refusal to apologize to Atlanta Summer Olympic bombing suspect Richard Jewell for their reported assumptions of his guilt, was one example of the unprofessional behavior of news organizations. Admissions of fallibility such as offered in 1987 by the 'New York Times' for erroneous reporting are rare, but do much to restore the public's dwindling respect for the media.

From the supplier: Editors admitting mistakes and making corrections enhance the credibility of their news organizations. They argue mistakes in the news business are inevitable, and to save a newspaper's reputation, it is crucial for all newspapers to correct themselves and let the public know about it. Television and radio stations are also tracking the volume and nature of their mistakes.

              Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Best of the series.......2007-05-02

Personally, I felt that this was the best in the Ravenloft series. It is clear from the other reviews that I am in a bit of a minority, but that's OK. I am not one to read books more than once generally, but I have read Tapestry twice and will probably read it a couple more times.

Elaine succeeds in weaving a tale that is not immediately obvious and mondain in the way that many fantasy novels are. She paints a number of characters whose intentions are not immediately clear, who even shift as the story progresses. As such, the characters are all but flat. Characters whose nature changes through the progression of a novel are difficult to write, but Elaine shows a great capacity for doing just that.

Another positive characteristic of Tapestry is that it is original. The Ravenloft series has a horrible propensity towards poorly-written facsimiles of such great classics as Dracula and Frankenstein. As a result, the novel kept me guessing through-out.

              4 out of 5 stars A Ravenloft tie-in that reads like a real novel........2005-07-08

This Ravenloft novel is only "hard to read" if you're working with a 5th grade education, or only read series tie-ins. The author takes time to develop atmosphere, establish relatively complex characters and situations, and chooses to suggest and insinuate rather than spell everything out, which leaves room for reader interpretation and results in a more satisfying read. "Tapestry of Dark Souls" feels like an actual horror novel rather than 350 page advertisement for a D&D expansion set. If you actually read horror, you'll probably like this one.

              1 out of 5 stars yuck!.......2004-09-20

this book was horrible, the worst in the series.
its long , hard to read and pointless- Stay away!

2 out of 5 stars Not the easiest book to read.......2004-02-18

I have read a lot of books in this series and for the most part the books were very good. IMHO This book was long and accually took effort to finish and when I got to the end I was almost glad it was over. Story was ok, characters were ok and all in all the book was just OK.

              5 out of 5 stars DiDi 25y Belgium.......1999-01-25

I liked this ravenloft adventure very much. It became an obsession after I struggled through the first (rather boring)chapter. Elaine didn't use the 'higher' Ravenloft-caracters and thats why she could do with her caracter what she wanted. It not an open ended story this time, its has a sad end, but that's Ravenloft. I preferred the Ravenloft adventures written by female writers, because it's not just the horror they are writer about, it goes much deeper. I should rather classify this novel as 'dark Fantasy' I loved it!!!

Major Scott St. Andrew has served on both sides of the war between the mighty Terran Alliance and the colonial forces of the Seventeen Worlds -- abandoning the tyrannical former to fight for the latter's noble cause. Genetically enhanced by a strange alien technology that has made him an indomitable weapon -- while slowly destroying him -- he is one of the few to escape an Alliance surprise attack on the colonists' capital world, fleeing the bloodbath for the harsh moon of Exeter where his transformation began . . . and where possible salvation awaits. But a traitor in the rebels' midst has turned the tide in this brutal war, leaving St. Andrew with nowhere to turn and no one to trust, and ultimately placing him in enemy chains. And with time running out, he must make one final, fatal choice: to save the woman he loves . . . or the worlds he is sworn to protect.

Fleeing the bloodbath, he returns to the harsh moon of Exeter where the entire mess began. There, he hopes salvation awaits. However, as in every war, there are traitors. The acts of one traitor will leave St. Andrew with no place to run, no one to trust, and with an inevitable choice: to save the woman he loves...or the worlds he is sworn to protect.

***** This is the last book in this spectacular trilogy. All strings are wrapped up, though not always neatly. Throughout the entire trilogy, author Ben Weaver has shown how war can take people on the brink of adulthood and twist them, inside and out, every possible way. As the reader, I could easily sympathize with the main character, Scott, as he made difficult choices and then had to live with the outcome. The main plot was flawless, the sub-plots breathtaking, and the action was non-stop. The author seemed to actually breath life into the two main heros, each with their own distinct personalities. I cannot recommend this trilogy high enough. Astounding! *****

4 out of 5 stars Traitors past and present.......2004-07-11

Scott St Andrew has been promoted to Major and with his company has been sent to guard a scientific outpost of Columbia colony. What neither Scott or Halitov expected was to walk into a massacre caused by a traitor in the ranks of the Wardens.

This story is told in flashback and is the story of two traitors in Scott's life, one in the past, the other in the present. It proves, if nothing else, that Scott has learnt from the horrors of his past.

These books are still entertaining, and it is interesting to see the emotional growth of Scott has he finally makes some permanent connections to other people. We also see some of Scott's future and realise at last why it was so important for him to survive the war. There's also a possible solution to his ageing and faulty conditioning problem.

However, having said all that, this does not conclude the colonial war story. We don't see the end of the war or how Scott slipped into politics at its end. This book could be read as the end of the story, but there's still plenty of scope and loose ends for another instalment of the story of Scott St Andrew. I understand the author had plans to write 3 more books in this series to complete it, whether the publishers will ever give us those books is a different story. Let's hope we do see them!

4 out of 5 stars The Awards of Loyalty.......2003-12-22

Patriot in Arms is the third novel in the In Arms series, following Rebels In Arms. In the previous volume, some elements of the Seventeen System Guard Corps disguised as alliances forces attack Aire-Wu and then the alliances take advantage of the confusion to really invade the planet. After the alliances capture the reconditioning facility, Ms. Brooks blows the demo charges to deny it to the enemy. Again Scott St. Andrew has been frustrated in his attempt to be reconditioned. After escaping to Rexi-Calhoun, he is given command of a battalion in defense of Columbia Colony and he finds that his brother Jarrett has been assigned as one of his company commanders under an assumed name.

In this novel, Columbia Colony is attacked by massive alliances forces who have used the proper codes to penetrate the space defense. Ordering an evacuation of the position, Scott tries to hold back the tide of alliances troop, but is overwhelmed by the attack. He barely manages to escape with the assistance of Halitov and Elise Rainey, a reporter who had remained behind to cover the fighting retreat, only to find herself in a rout.

Obviously there is a traitor among the Colonial Wardens. Worst yet, the techs discover that some conditioned troops can withhold information from a cerebo scan. The traitor could be any conditioned trooper with the pertinent knowledge.

Scott and Halitov are reassigned as "combat consultants" to Colonel Beauregard until such time as they can be reconditioned. However, the war interrupts those plans and they are shipped off to Exeter, where they are captured by the alliances, but their ATC is hijacked by a conditioned former cadet and diverted to Illica. There they are promptly attacked by alliances forces.

This volume is the conclusion of the current story arc. It ends a tale of the fast-moving, topsy-turvy life of a professional soldier who puts loyalty above personal desires. After many mistakes, unfortunate events and changes in allegiance, he still remains loyal to the people of the seventeen systems. However, he loses much of his naivety and gains more than a touch of cynicism along the way.

This novel is told as flashbacks by the Colonel Alliance Security Chief more than two decades after the recollected events. Once again war looms over the Colonial Alliance and Scott St. Andrew wants to keep such horror from happening again. As he prepares to fight for reconciliation, Scott remembers his past experiences as a warrior.

Be aware that this story has a strong explicit component of destiny within the plot. Meetings and happenings occur with seeming randomness, but they move Scott further along toward his destined role. While the frustration of his attempts to be reconditioned become a sort of running joke, such denial is vital to the conclusion of the story.

Recommended for Weaver fans and for anyone else who enjoys tales of war, warriors, and political intrigue.

4 out of 5 stars Good conclusion to the series.......2003-11-14

Scott St Andrew is one of those memorable characters that you never forget. Long after reading this series, you will remember him and his friends as they battled the Earth Alliances for the freedom of the colonies.

You have to get this... but then you already know that right? If you've read Brothers in Arms and Rebels in Arms, you simply have to read this one to learn who the traitor is. And then there is the little detail of what happens to Scott in the end :¬)

Patriots in Arms is the third book in a series by Mr. Weaver. The story follows Scott St. Andrew through his military career. Mr. Weaver tells an interesting story about a colonial rebellion. With a couple of background stories one of the major side stories is about the intergration of a discrimated class through their roles in the military and the effect of an extraordinary event(an alien device)

Each of the novels builds on the previous story leading ultimately to an expected but highly satisfying ending.

The only disappointment is Mr. Weaver's use of an artifial device to bring about the acceptance of his main charector. Though, this device is lessened because the it appears that it is more the leadership, character and humanity of St. Andrew that helps him bring about the intergration, and less the extraordinary device.

But still I found Mr. Weaver's writing to be exciting and attention keeping, and I look forward to his next adventure.

Since 1990, Sara Foster has been delighting the patrons of her two North Carolina gourmet takeout food stores with refined yet unpretentious fare that reflects her Southern upbringing and years as a professional cook on the East Coast. The Foster's Market Cookbook, penned with food writer Sarah Belk King, collects dozens of Foster's most popular recipes, beloved for their use of high-quality seasonal ingredients and rich, imaginative flavor combinations. As with Ina Garten's Barefoot Contessa Cookbook and myriad tomes by Martha Stewart (for whom Foster worked in the 1980s), Foster's debut provides both advanced and fledgling home cooks with impeccably tasteful dinner-party menu ideas and creative weekday meals.

Starting the book as you might your morning, Foster offers tantalizing breakfast possibilities such as Sticky Orange-Coconut Pinwheels and traditional-with-a-twist brunch dishes such as Mushroom-Risotto Hash with Fried Eggs and Grilled Ham. Next come more than 15 soul-warming soups, stews, and chilies (Corn and Roasted Red Pepper Chowder is just one of many must-make entries); sandwiches and snacks; salads and sides; entrées; and desserts. Main-dish highlights include Chicken Breasts Stuffed with Prosciutto and Sun-Dried Tomatoes (they're so good and so easy to make!), Grilled Eggplant Parmesan with Fresh Mozzarella and Zesty Tomato Sauce, and Pan-Seared Sea Scallops with Tom Thumb Tomatoes and Foster's Pesto (a perfect quick spring meal). The desserts are divine, including chic confections such as Four-Layer Blueberry Gingerbread Cake with Mocha Cream, a collaboration with Durham pastry chef Kathy Edwards, as well as old-fashioned treats like strawberry shortcake and pecan pie (nicely jazzed with bourbon). Throughout, sidebars and tips on techniques give cooks additional opportunity to learn from Foster's fine food sensibility. For connoisseurs of simple yet sophisticated cuisine, The Foster's Market Cookbook truly titillates. --Rebecca Robinson

Before moving to Durham, North Carolina, Sara worked alongside Martha Stewart in the kitchen of Martha’s catering business. When she opened her own catering company, Sara kept her food simple yet soulful, trusting the complex flavors of seasonal ingredients. This same basic principle guides the daily offerings at Foster’s Markets in Durham and Chapel Hill. Each week the markets serve nearly a thousand customers hungrily searching out Sara’s innovative, new-style home cooking. And now food lovers everywhere will be able to prepare with ease sumptuous dishes such as Roasted Chicken, Sweet Potato, and Arugula Salad; Herb-Grilled Salmon with Fresh Tomato-Orange Chutney; and Risotto Cakes with Roasted Tomatoes and Foster’s Arugula Pesto. Also featured are a host of wonderful desserts, such as Lemon Chess Pie with Sour Cherries and Chocolate Espresso Layer Cake with Mocha Latte Frosting.

Featuring mouthwatering favorites from the market and dozens of helpful sidebars that discuss ingredients, techniques, and make-ahead tips, The Foster’s Market Cookbook provides all you need to know to make the most of every season’s finest offerings.

Great cookbook! Every recipe I have tried has turned out perfectly and has afforded me rave reviews from my friends and family. Some of my favorites from this great resource: Old Fashioned Chicken Salad and Chocolate Chip Cookies!

This is a MUST HAVE for your cookbook library!

                                5 out of 5 stars Mouthwatering scones, heart-to-heart talks.......2007-06-08

I am not an objective reviewer of this cookbook, because sitting in Fosters Market nibbling scones and sipping coffee kept me sane for 5 years of graduate school at Duke. My closest friendships were cemented there. There are other treasures in the region - Bill Smith's Crooks Corner in Chapel Hill was another favorite (you can find their shrimp and grits recipe on-line, and find more recipes in Seasoned in the South: Recipes from Crook's Corner and from Home). I bought Sara Foster's book for the scone recipe, and sent the book to friends. Reading the book reminds me that good food shared with good friends can bring great happiness. Thank you, Sara!

5 out of 5 stars recreating college favorites.......2007-06-03

I lived right down the street from Foster's Market in Chapel Hill during college and just gave this cookbook to each of my roommates for graduation presents because we all love it so much! I eat there at least 4 times a week and now that we are all moving away we can attempt to re-create some of our favorites. The pictures in the book make your mouth water and look just like what the food in the market looks like. Some of the recipes seem a little difficult with lots of ingredients but trust me- they are worth it! Once you've mastered this one I would try her 'Fresh Every Day' cook book or 'Barefoot Contessa'.

5 out of 5 stars Just as good as Fosters!.......2006-05-01

As a student at Duke University, my friends and I went to Fosters for brunch EVERY Sunday. The breakfast specials - pancakes, omlets, and the "special" - were always, without fail, incredible. If we made it there later in the day, the soups, breads, and salads were always a hit.
My best friend bought me this cookbook for graduation, and it was by far the best gift I received. Being able to actually make all the food we always ate at Fosters brought back all the memories of my college days. The strawberry-rhubarb crisp, hummus, blondies, and scones are among my favorie recipies to make. The pictures speak more than a thousand words and entice even the novice cooks to try out her recipies. Among my collection of cookbooks, this one is certainly the favorite.
If you are ever in Durham or Chapel Hill area, I encourage you to check out Fosters Market - truly worth the trip.

4 out of 5 stars Very Good Collection of Comfort Restaurant Food.......2005-04-30

`The Foster's Market Cookbook' by Sara Foster, with Sarah Belk King, I bought in my `buy everything I saw on the Food Network' phase, especially after I saw Sarah Foster demonstrate her killer sticky bun recipe on the Food Network's `In Martha's Kitchen' show. This was also in my sticky bun-baking period, before I gave it up as too much work and went back to straight breads.

One of the main reasons the book sat unopened on my shelves for so long was the fact that the `killer sticky bun' recipe was simply not that killer. Do not believe anyone when they say they have an easy sticky bun recipe, because it probably means the end result will fall below expectations. Around the same time, I did a sticky bun recipe from funny baker Wayne Harley Brachman, and that one didn't come up to snuff anyway. Leave it to Julia Child to come through for me. I did the sticky bun recipe in `Baking with Julia' and it was a LOT of work, but it in fact surpassed anything you can get from the mall.

But getting back to Sarah Foster's book, I have come back to it because I harbored s suspicion that there was some really good stuff in the book, and I was not disappointed.

Part of my attraction is that I am a sucker for any cookbook that covers sandwiches. While I think Foster's sandwich recipes are not as interesting or as complete as those in Nancy Silverton's whole book devoted to the subject, they are a great resource if you happen to have no other source of ideas for sandwiches.

Otherwise, the book covers everything you would expect, and it is especially strong on topics where you would expect expertise such as muffins, biscuits, scones, soups, salads, and egg dishes. On one of my favorite criteria for evaluating cookbooks, the recipe for a classic French omelet, Foster comes through like a champ. The only omelet tip she does not follow is to let the eggs come to room temperature before cracking and beating them, but then, this is probably quite impractical for a restaurant kitchen.

She is also quite good on another of my favorite criteria, the making of stocks. Her recipes are very good for non-foodies and people who care not for haute cuisine, as they do not take very long to produce a very acceptable chicken, vegetable, or beef stock. My only reservations may be that some of her suggestions may lead to waste perfectly good poached chicken on the one hand and include less than edible vegetable cuttings into stocks. There is a reason some people are hyperfussy about stock making. These are but two of the reasons.

I fully endorse Ms. Foster's recipes for muffins, biscuits, and scones. They are as good or better than recipes I have seen in books by professional bakers and books specializing in these subjects.

The hardest aspect of whether it is worth buying this book is how if will complement your current cookbook collection. If you are a cookbook collector, the question is moot. Nothing will stop you from getting this notable title. On the other hand, if all you have is `The Joy of Cooking', this would be a welcome supplement, as like fellow Martha Stewart alumnae, Ina Garten's early cookbooks, all the recipes come from a commercial kitchen which depends on their products for good business and the products are relatively easy to make.

This also means that the selection of recipes is very good fare for church bazaars and bake sales. While Foster is downsizing her recipes to household serving numbers, I am sure that her soups would work well at two to four to eight times her recipe size. Just be a little careful on multiplying some of the spicier ingredients.

I find all the recipes extremely well written. They are full of important details for amateur chefs and unlike some books, everything is printed in good old fashioned black and white with a little highlight shading here and there for sidebars. And, several dishes are presented in living color photographs, and little real estate is taken up by cutsie pics of Foster's Market staff and customers. My only argument with the layout of the book is the chapter title pages where the names of the recipes are written in a kind of multicolored hodgepodge, similar to the maddening typography in Jamie Oliver's otherwise excellent cookbooks.

Fostering this kind of material is what made Martha Stewart so respectable in what she did on her shows. Of this genre of cookbook, this is a very good sample. I would recommend it to anyone who is looking for recipes from this `feel good market' venue. I think, for example, that it is more value for the money than Ina Garten's first cookbook.
