Book Description
1923. Vance, American screenwriter, short story writer and novelist, begins The Road to En-Dor: Gosport, Andrew Streator mused in a tone that matched a look of sober thankfulness in his dark eyes: God's port indeed! He stood, bareheaded, on the doorstep, savoring the first few moments of freedom that had been granted him since his formal installation in his new parsonage. In the road outside the picket-fence dust still was slowly settling that had been kicked up by the rig of the last deacon to wrench himself reluctantly away and leave the new pastor to get shaken down without more neighborly assistance; though the pangs of parting had been tempered in the bosom of each by the knowledge shared in common, if tacitly, that the deacon would find some excuse to drop round again after supper, on the off-chance of being asked either to lend a hand at something or, better still, to give advice; in the offer of which offices he would most improbably be alone. Extraordinary measures to escape.......2006-06-20
Lts Jones and Hill were interred at Yozgad POW camp in Turkey during WWI. Jones had been present at the surrender of Kut, and made the dismal march up to Anatolia, which has been well documented in many other books. Hill was in the RFC and was captured on the Palestine Front. Both officers engaged in, what some might consider, extreme measures to break out of prison. The two built up a reputation as spiritualists, able to communicate with the "spook" via a oija board. After this went on for a period of time, and they had effectively hoodwinked the Turkish prison staff, they crafted an elaborate scheme to get transferred out of prison. Just about when the scheme was in its advanced stages, it was delayed.
This prompted a reevaluation of the escape plan. The two officers then determined that if they could get certified as insane, they would be exchanged back to England. I will let you figure out how all of this worked, but suffice to say, that after a prolonged period of time where great self-inflicted suffering was incurred by both officers, they were exchanged within less than a month before the Turkish surrender!
Excellent read...

No Quarter: A Matty Graves Novel
ASIN: 0972630392 |
Book Description
Geoffrey Frost, American sea captain and veteran of the Chine Trade, and Ming Tsun, his enigmatic mute friend, return in this latest installment of the highly literate and compelling saga of the American struggle for Independence at sea. After a clash against well-armed British warships, Frost's ship, the privateer Audacity, must be laid up for repairs. Frost, however, is not the kind of man to sit idle for long, and when a new secret weapon invented by David Bushnell comes to light, he recognizes a rare opportunity to strike hard at the complacent English. Commanding the prototype submarine Narwhal, Frost and the freed slave Darius set out to bring terror from below, all the while narrowly avoiding sinking and certain death in the cast iron tomb. Fender proves in this harrowing novel of power and suspense why he is quickly distinguishing himself as one of the eminent voices of American historical fiction.

Book Description
Old New York is burning--.
The year is 1864. On muddy battlefields from Virginia to Mississippi, young men are dying under the Confederate and Union banners. And in the streets of New York City, teeming with immigrants and dandies, tycoons and petty criminals, are eight men who are out to strike the South's last, desperate blow against the North. Under the code name Lucifer, they have come to burn New York to the ground.
But a young woman in love with a Broadway actor named Booth has caught a glimpse of the conspirators. So have a flamboyant prostitute and a young, hard-drinking newspaperman named Pete Tonneman. Together they will be swept into the treacherous eddies of a conspiracy going terribly, murderously wrong. And to stop the city from becoming an inferno, they must find a killer who is driven by a savage cause of his own....
Customer Reviews:
Not the best in the series.......1999-12-19
Although the desciptions and details of this Civil War mystery were very interesting and obviously well-researched, the plot was not as tight as previous Tonneman books. While character development was fair, not great, the very short chapters seemed to jump from place to place in the city - a little helter skelter. Overall I would recommend this book, but again, the earlier ones are better.
The best in historical mystery.......1997-11-11
In 1864 New York City is divided over the Civil War. However, none of the residents are split over a rumor that a militia of Kentuckians are poised to burn down the city in an act of terrorism. Almost no one believes it since the residents mostly support the democratic party and think Lincoln and his cohorts are the source of the rumors.
Not even thirty, Peter Tonneman is already a weary journalist on the New York Evening Post, whose assignment is the nation. Peter learns that the rumor has a lot of substance as Morgan's Raiders have been seen in the vicinity. Now all he has to do is prove it before he loses his life.
The sixth book in the Meyers' "Tonneman family" saga is a brilliant novel that brings to life the various prejudices that shaped the Civil War. Peter like his ancestors of the past two centuries, is a wonderful lead character and the historical factoids add a taste of authenticity to a well written, exciting historical novel. Anyone who enjoys historical fiction will want to read the entire six books that breathlessly describes two hundred years of New York City (starting when it was New Amsterdam), turning this into one of the best series in the genre.

love and hate.......2006-04-26
Clearly a book that you will either love or hate. I confess that when i first read it I was appalled at the aparent blasphemy and i picked many faults. My husband read it and said that it was the best book ever, so i read it again and wa surprised to find that my opinion had changed. I looked past the blasphemy and the other faults and read the book for what it was. A riveting horror story. If you can get past the religious content then you will love it. If religion is your life and you are easily offended then give it a miss or read it with an open mind. There are enough reveiws that give the basic outline of the story, but they leave out so many of the supporting characters. Death for example was brilliant as was Judas Iscariot (escaped from hell and looking for redemption). Other characters like Lazarus were also worked in brilliantly. Lazarus was brought back from the dead according to the bible, but what if this was a curse rather than a blessing? Simple genius. The raw gritty violence, and graphic scenes ofdepravity will no doubt appeal to many readers. But I enjoyed it for the underlying message of hope and nobility that shone through and the clear desire of the author to allow us to truly beleive in life after death. I can only hope and pray for more.
What an excuse for a book.......2006-03-09
I was really looking forward to reading this book. I ordered it, and received it shortly afterwards. Look, this book has more spelling errors and grammar structure problems than a second grader's homework. I counted 32 instances of spelling errors and grammar on the first chapter alone. How this book passed an editor's desk is beyond me. This book is VERY hard to read because almost every sentence is messed up with errors. I'm not fluffing this at all, I'm serious. When they use words like "SEA" to describe viewing something at a distance, as opposed to ..oh I don't know... "SEE", you know you've picked a winner!
This book is not worth it. There are so many errors, it makes it very hard to read, because you catch all the spelling errors and it just distracts from the story. Speaking of the story, it wasn't "too" bad. I liked the story itself, but then again first person view stories don't do so well, especially when the author writes like it's his first time telling a story. I'm clearly not impressed with having to use four letter words every page just to keep your reader hooked. Authors attempt to use violence, language, and strong sexual content to hook the reader. Of course this becomes hard to believe when the author can't even spell right.
Stay away, or else your soul will surely be damned.
waste of time.......2006-03-07
The book starts out pretty gripping despite the really really bad editing job. The other reviews tell you what the story was about so I won't elaborate on that. The second half of the book goes down hill fast. It read like it was written by a 12 year old boy with ADD (Attention Deficit Syndrome). The final battles involve many "something-headed" people. For example, I think there were some Aardvark-headed people, some Antelope-headed people ect. It was really stupid and after I was finished reading it I threw it away and wanted the time that I had wasted on it back.
Another mediocre occult book.......2005-12-29
Beware...this book may not be what you're looking for. Its awkwardly used first person style is tedious with many overly long run-on sentences. Liberally laced with four letter words I quickly discovered it's not another end times thriller from a Christian perspective. The author's world view is summed up in his author's note: "....we are all worshipping the same God without realizing it..." It led to a story that was disappointing.
Brilliant Lucifer.......2005-11-28
This one is a real page turner. Topical as humanity has been almost entirely wiped out by a plague spread by birds (di the author have a premonition or what?) and controvercial due to the evidence that Jesus was possibly the second messiah after Mithras born 1400 years before christ. Forget Dan Brown this book was riveting and the horror is simply unparraleled in anything i have ever read before. The characters of the four horsemen are brought to life with some brilliant writing and you find yourself liking Death and War and thoroughly hating Famine and Pestilence. With the odds stacked highly against the human race can anyone survive? Read this book and find out. Pure Genius!

Judge Dredd and the Instant Classic Nemesis of Judge Death.......2005-03-18
This happens to be a landmark entry in the Judge Dredd series, often reprinted as a newsagent quick money spinning comic; even here in the "2000AD Hardcover Collector's Editions", half of this black and white graphic novel is dedicated to the late seventies early eighties character of Judge Dredd, known best for his role in "2000 AD" graphic comic series, the biggest selling science-fiction comic in the UK, even though the concept is wholly American (John Wagner built Judge Dredd as an anti-commie future cop) brought to British readers a new character that is the longest surviving individual of the 2000 AD series, no one will even mention the movie of the same name (Dredd took off his helmet, duh!) in a room with fans because YOU WILL BE JUDGED!, here is Mega-City One, we get some of the best Judge Death stories, the classic JUDGE DREDD VS. JUDGE DEATH, including the three other death judges in the second story, this hardback cover collector's book is very large 11" x 9.4", but sadly Judge Death only takes up 50 pages, so the remaining 50 pages are filler 2000 AD comic strips with only Judge Dredd, but we do get more of Brian Bolland's artwork there and stories from John Howard but sadly there is no more Judge Death or John Wagner, but the point is that the original Judge Death series that boosted the character's appeal is right here. You can, by-all-means, probably pick up an actual comic of just the original Judge Death series, for a fraction of the price, but the hardback nature (and it is a lovely hardback) of this book means that this time your Judge Dredd vs Judge Death will keep.
There is a color update of Judge Dredd vs. Judge Death but that is not this collector's version (the original) and instead you should be aiming for Judge Dredd: Necropolis Book One and Book Two (a two part series) or other recent color offerings, but then you are really going about looking for variations of the original theme that you get here, by all means do, but this is the original. On the basis of this book I probably would be weary about launching into getting the Collector's Series, unless I liked whatever 2000AD story and character is covered (I will be moving onto Judge Dredd: The Cursed Earth - 2000 AD Collector's Edition next), as they are old graphic novels (1980) and missing modern artwork and elements, none-the-less, the original Dredd vs. Death is right here the way I picked it up and later it fed the dog somehow... anyway this time I get to keep it.
Please Allow Me To Introduce Myself.......2003-01-25
Wagner. Bolland. Dredd. What else needs to be said about the legendary first appearance of Judge Death and the other Dark Judges in British comic anthology 2000AD? Absolutely nothing. Oh, except BUY THIS NOW!

Fantastically Healthy Recipes..........2007-06-27
Great cookbook...wonderful for those who are looking for ways to cook Mediterranean or for the experts who want to add this book to their collection. I love it !!!! :)
Work up front.......2007-05-12
I haven't tried any of the recipes yet because most of them require the prior preparation of a stock or sauce (recipes are also provided for these)in order to prepare the main recipe. The recipes sound good and flavorful, but I need to make the time to prepare the sauces/stocks and put them in the freezer so I can make these recipes on a moments notice. So if you're looking for a cookbook that you can just pick up and instantly make the recipe, this is not the one for you.
My Least Favorite Cookbook.......2007-02-06
Nothing to talk about. Just a very plain average cookbook with little or no originality. Very disappointing
The Everything Mediterranean Cookbook.......2006-02-17
This book (in general)contains a basically half dozen base recipies, such as stock, to which various ingredients are added.
Not authentic, but good.......2006-01-11
I like mediterranean food but this cookbook seems tailored for Americans. It's not authentic. But don't let me spoil your appetite.
