Book Description

Bored and lonely, 15-year-old Hélène decides to pay a visit to her father’s mistress. Within days, she is captivated by Tamara, a Russian émigré whose arts of enchantment include lingering kisses, sudden dismissals, and savage, rapturous reunions. As long as she submits to Tamara, Hélène is permitted to stay near her: reading forbidden novels, meeting Tamara’s bohemian friends, and learning more “refinements of depravity” than the gossiping matrons of her provincial French town could imagine existed.
Flemish writer Françoise Mallet-Joris was 20 years old in 1951 when her first novel, Le Rempart des Beguines — published in English as The Illusionist — created a sensation in France. This contemplative, beautifully written book, with its dark undercurrents of desire, has its origins in Madame Bovary and the novels of Colette, and was a precursor to Françoise Sagan’s similarly themed Bonjour Tristesse.

2 out of 5 stars Dated and boring.......2007-06-08

I don't know what I expected, maybe something more evocative of the place and time. It's a very "told" story, not shown, lacking in convincing detail. It may well be an impressive accomplishment for a nineteen-year-old author, but that is not saying much. The first person narrator is a sheltered girl of fifteen to sixteen, and the narrative is predictably dull as a result of her naivete, and of the remove. It was a waste of time for me, perhaps interesting as a period piece. Not entirely without insight, but there are so many better books.

4 out of 5 stars Provocative. . . . ........2006-12-19

How surprising that the author of this provocative novel was only 19-years-old. How does a 19-year-old gain such experience, such insight, such maturity? Exceedingly well-written, intense, psychological, dark, lovely. The reader is captured, held hostage to the story.

2 out of 5 stars A surprise, but not a good one.......2006-11-28

I'm giving this book 2 stars, there is good writing. The story itself is rather dark, and you'd make a mistake if you were led to conclude that a nineteen-year-old author in 1952 cannot be all that bad of a read (as I thought). The story centers around a 15-year-old girl who is left alone at her home much of the time. Her mother passed away when she was younger, to young to remember, her father has his own business and is a workaholic. The service personnel try to tend to her as best as possible, but most of the time, the girl is bored. Her father tells her about a mistress he has in town, hoping to avoid her finding out in a more unsavory way. She's intrigued. One day her father asks her to call the mistress and deliver an excuse for him, that he cannot see her til later in the evening. He adds the woman's address thinking it is not out of place that she have it should an emergency arise. The girl decides to deliver the excuse in person and runs across the neighborhood to reach the woman's apartment. That is the beginning of what I can best describe as a sordid relationship. There is physical abuse, mental manipulation, distasteful handling at a woman's bar, etc. I was quite surprised by the story, to say the least. The writing was good, however with such a story I will not add this to my bookshelf.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting, but lacking depth.......2004-10-13

I found this book to be somewhat lackluster. It starts out with a bang, and wraps up with a poor ending. It doesn't employ Magus' abilities well, and while the historical content is of some interest, the author insists on using names few would recognize or puzzle out. Jesus is Joshua, Peter is Kepha, even though Saul is easily recognizable, as is Phillip. Much of Simon's arguments against the scriptures pretty much smack of sophistry. Anita Mason does her utmost to stay with the basic storyline as told by numerous Gnostic websites. A decent read, but not a book that I would use as a reference guide, nor one that I would reread.

5 out of 5 stars Magic, religion and reality.......2001-09-16

I picked this up a couple of years ago in Swansea, Wales on the remaindered table of one of those now common dumping bookshops. In fact, I buy most of my books like that, since it is this safest way to get to know new authors. This is one of the only novels I have read that actually actively changed not my life, but my perception of certain matters.

The story is about Simon Magus, a man who is mostly remembered, if at all, for having been a great magician at the time of St Peter, who summoned demons to make him fly and was then brought to shame by the Saint himself and the power of God.

Ms Mason weaves the story of this extraordinary man around the turbulent ambience of the time. She demonstrates how during Jesus' own lifetime and later there were various miracle makers abroad, attracting great audiences with their shows. Simon Magus, a man of no religion, bisexual and with a penchant for young boys, mixes with the early Christians including Peter, not on enemy terms, but perfectly civilly. He travels around making great illusions for all to see, but always remains essentially a man.

Although the subject matter may seem unexciting to some, the book is extraordinarily gripping and entertaining. The author demonstrates in a very convincing manner, but without being pedantic, how the God of the Old Testament, the Jewish God, is in contradiction to the forgiving God Jesus spoke of. Although he is already dead at the time of the story, Jesus becomes very much alive and human to the reader.

I am not sure what kind of effect this book will have on Christians, I'm sure it will cause quite a stir,
but for me, a more than convinced atheist, it did a lot to change my view both of Jesus himself, and of Christianity, which sadly now as ever, has often little to do with the teachings of its unfortunate namesake.

    5 out of 5 stars Spiritual Afterlife.......2006-08-17

    [...]
Dakota Devereaux (not Devereaus) has been enchanted by the lovely and mysterious Yemaya Lysanne (the Illusionist). Their attraction is real and not an illusion. Some very strange things go on which Yemaya controls.

Then we meet the 7 spirits (Sarpe, Vyushir, Arbora, Ursa, Ladyhawk, Mari, and Maopa). These spirits are the council and come together because something very "dark" is lurking in the woods.

The "Darkness" takes control of a demented young man and he kills a wolf and a young girl. The town is in an uproar, but scared.

You'll have to read the next two books in order to find out how the love affair between Yemaya and Dakota progresses. Also the spirit world seems to be pairing up..Ursa and Abora have already made their tie. Moapa and Mari (the spitting images of Dakota and Yemaya) are getting frisky.

There are some bloody part, but this is a fantastic novel. It did end a little abruptly.

5 out of 5 stars The Illusionist - not what you think, but so much more.......2006-08-16

This is NOT a vampire story. It is NOT a werewolf story.

The Illusionist is a tale of mystery, spirits, legend, magic and the unexplained and unexplainable comging togethr in the modern world as the main characters, Dakota and Yemaya meet and face challenges together and individually. I loved the story because it isn't simple, or formulaic. Yemaya and Dakota are interesting as individuals. Their respective histories are fascinating and could be the fodder for a series of novels on their own. As Yemaya and Dakota come to realize their connection to each other and to the events around them, you're drawn in.

The book is well-written, thoughtful, and weaves an interesting tale of cultures, superstitions, and current culture and conventional thinking all coming together to yield more than the sum of their parts.

5 out of 5 stars A great and interesting read!!!.......2006-08-06

The ability of the author to weave such an interesting story with the two main female characters, Dakota and Yemaya, is amazing. The story takes you from several places in the States to Moldova in Europe with a gripping mystery and a beautiful romantic tale. Yamaya's ability to interact mentally with various animals is intriguing and will captivate your interest.
I heartily recommend this book and am eager to read more from this newly published author.

4 out of 5 stars From the Author.......2006-08-06

As the author of the book The Illusionist, I appreciate the reviews that have been posted to date. Both readers have very differing opinions of what the story is about and where it is going. I would like to correct a few observatons about the story line, though. For readers looking for a vampire story, this is not that, so please don't expect this one to fulfill that need. One of the locations is in the land of the legendary vampire, but other than a discussion of its history, vampires do not make an appearance at any time. As for the story leaving several questions unanswered, like any first story with sequels to follow, indeed this one doesn't answer all of your questions. Some will be answered in the next sequel 'BLOODLUST' and new questions will be asked. I enjoy writing stories that allow my readers to question ideas, philosophies and events, and draw their own conclusions rather than have me explain every detail and provide solutions to everything. From the reviews posted to date, it is obvious that my story has accomplished that so far. Thank you Sage and RC for taking the time to post your reviews. I hope others will take the time to read this book.

    4 out of 5 stars The Illusionist.......2006-08-04

The Illusionist, Yemaya Lysanne, is as mysterious as the illusions she performs for audiences around the world. Dakota Devereaux is an investigative journalist who is determined to uncover the secrets behind the illusions and the woman who creates them. During one of Yemaya's performances, Dakota inadvertently notices a man taking unauthorized photographs. By witnessing this event, the reporter becomes the target of a power hungry CEO who will stop at nothing to garner the secretes of The Illusionist for himself. An accident at the performance provides Dakota the opportunity to meet Yemaya. The Illusionist invites Dakota to visit her home in Moldova, a land rich in legends of werewolves and vampires. Add to the mix eccentric spirits , a psychopath, and the mysterious Carpathian Mountains and you have the crux of the story.

Heckrotte's writing talent is clear from the first chapter of this book. She presents a complex plot with many surprises. Her use of actual places provides a rich backdrop for the tale she tells. With the exception of a one-dimensional villain and a stereotypical psychopath, I find all of Heckrotte's characters dynamic and enduring in their own way.

Despite its setting, this story is not about immortal vampires and their relationship with surrounding villages. However, it does offer an alternative point of view on creationism and immortality. Heckrotte also gifts us with many textured moments of quiet passion ... the love of one's art, the fierce protectiveness between family members, and the feelings of first love on the mortal plane as well as in the spirit realm.

I enjoyed the narrative and pacing of the story but the real joy was in the author's written voice. Her descriptions and languages were appropriate and believable. Lending a different "voice" to several characters made them more dynamic and multidimensional. The descriptions of the land as well as the small villages were compelling. Heckrotte uses a number of richly drawn supporting characters who help to flesh out the story. One particular favorite is Granny, a crusty 19th century eccentric who's speech, mannerisms, and sense of adventure makes her a joy to read about. I am looking forward to reading the sequel to The Illusionist.

In any legal case, there are two trials. There is the public litigation, prosecuted by the state; and then there is the lingering argument for those people surrounding the defendant, the lives that will never be the same again, the sense of a world which has become a reflection of itself. Julie Gower's well-balanced life is about to be disrupted. She is a renowned musician who lives in London. She has everything that she wants: work that she enjoys, friends who are close to her, a lover who shares her passions and talent. Everything changes when a telephone call at dawn tells her that her father, a well-known academic of German origin, is being extradited to France from his home in Massachusetts, to stand trial for crimes against humanity. When witness after witness tells tales of incredible sadness and terror, Julie is forced to face, and come to grips with, not only the possibility of her father's guilt, but also the uneasy family dynamics which the trial brings into the open.

1 out of 5 stars Workshopped to death.......2004-07-12

As a page turner this book does its job. A deliberate hook at the end of the chapter, forced if necessary. Hooks that are sometimes there for the sake of, completely against the flow of the piece. And that is the problem with this book. It is too workshopped and it sounds workshopped. There is no spark of originality, no unique voice, indeed no voice at all. It is bland bland bland!

    5 out of 5 stars A Late-Night Page Turner.......2001-08-22

I had read 300 pages of this book before I took a sip of water in the glass sitting next to me. I was enchanted by the world, by the family, and by the mysteries of this novel. This book will have you up all night, waiting to see how it ends! A must read!

    4 out of 5 stars Jeanette Angell's "The Illusionist".......2000-07-18

When Julie Gower's father is accused of crimes against humanity, Julie's calm and ordered world is turned upside down. Jeanette Angell's latest novel explores the effect of the devastating revelations on Julie and her family as they struggle to come to terms with Albert Gower's hidden past. Readers of Jeanette Angell's previous novels will know to expect some interesting twists and turns and will not be disappointed with her latest offering. The characters are well drawn and credible and the combination of psychological insight and page turning drama will keep you reading and wondering until the very end.

Don't let the pretty cover fool you. I found it difficult to read this book. Thoughts were incomplete ... . The book jumped all over the place and it would have been nice to be able to finish one scene before the author interrupted to introduce another scene. Several pages later the inocomplete scene would pick up again. I would not recommend this book but then, you might enjoy it. Not every book is for everybody and this one is not for me. END

Dawes work is the most successful and interesting meld of history of stage magic and history of science, medicine and technology I have yet found. This book is packed with leads to interesting research projects focusing on the relationship between entertainment and science. Highlights include: Ch 5, Dawes examples demonstrate that the relationship between quackery, entertainment and "legitimate" medicine is not the straightforward set of compartmentalized disciplines that both historians of the sciences and historians of popular culture and entertainment have presumed; Ch 6, Dawes research clearly shows how not only was magic influenced by Science, Technology and Medicine (STM), but STM was influenced by magic performance, as exemplified in the case of the adoption of inhalation anesthetic; Ch 7 Dawes here focuses on the relationships between technology, optics and entertainment that contributed to motion picture development. There is also mention of magicians and science education which provides and interesting connection between the traditionally disparate areas of science and entertainment.

This book ranks in my top 10 all time favorites.

      Book Description

The Illusionist is the sensuous and haunting tale of Dean Lily, an amateur magician whose arrival in Sparta, New York, upsets the landscape of this small town on the wane. Dean, a master of the sleight of hand, is also a master of seduction and charm -- which becomes apparent as he woos and wins the hearts of more than one of Sparta's female citizens.

But the enigmatic newcomer has more to hide than the tricks of his trade -- his mysterious identity and his closely guarded privacy arouse suspicion and jealousy -- and while he cures Sparta of its midwinter ennui, he also unleashes a destructive force that rocks the foundations of this town to its core. Inspired in part by a true story, The Illusionist is a fiercely erotic novel that thwarts conventions of gender and love.

4 out of 5 stars eerie similarities, but no credit to the real life "Dean".......2000-01-20

Because I already know all about the true story that inspired this novel, the book was nearly ruined for me. All eerie similarities to Brandon's real life aside (the accidental phone call and the rollerskating date, Brandon's girlfriend bailing him out of jail with a check her mother intended for the hairdresser, being put in a psychiatric ward after swallowing an entire bottle of antibiotics when his first serious girlfriend dumped him when she found out her boyfriend was really a girl...etc. ), this book is very good. You can't put it down- I read it in two days.

I was only disappointed that there wasn't even a paragraph about Brandon at the end or beginning of the book (but there was the little disclaimer paragraph that states any similarities to persons living or dead is purely coincidental.? ....or do they put that in all books?).

Like the movie "Boys Don't Cry", this book recounts the character's, in this case, Dean's, last month alive. So if the end seems rushed, it is. That's how it happened.

5 out of 5 stars Dinitia Smith is brilliant, this book is brilliant........1999-03-14

The book is incredibly powerful. It deeply examines the meaning of gender in our culture.

3 out of 5 stars An Interesting read that will keep you going.......1998-09-24

Proof positive, again, that truth is stranger than fiction, The Illusionist is a fictionalized version of the murder of Brandon Teena in Falls City, Nebraska. It makes for a gripping (and at times gruesome read), but the story is true -- and the subject of the new documentary movie,"The Brandon Teena Story", (produced and directed by Susan Muska and Greta Olafsdottir) and probably not coming to the neighborhood multiplex. The story is also proof (if incidents like the recent one in Jasper, Texas weren't enough), that sordid happenings occur in small town America just like in the big cities.

4 out of 5 stars When a real "man" comes to town.......1998-06-23

A young "man" comes to town and changes everyone's illusions about what they knew about love. Though the end seems rushed, this novel is mostly evenly paced. It's told from the first person of several lead characters and explores the loneliness and neediness of people in a small town with little going for it. It's sad but enlightening.

5 out of 5 stars A Darkly Thoughtful Wonderful Book.......1998-03-15

I felt chilled and disturbed throughout the reading of this book - and I couldn't put it down. Ms. Smith's dark study of life in a dreary NY town was remarkable. From the start I was captivated by the fragile characters and really cared about how they would end. I look forward to re-reading it one day

Book III of the Sex Gates Trilogy

The exciting conclusion to The Sex Gates trilogy. The mystery of the sex gates has at last been solved, but a horrible dilemma arises. The masters of the sex gates are gone, but they have left a potential catastrophe behind. All the people who have gone into gates and disappeared will be coming back, including psychopaths, the horribly injured and the very elderly. There is no way to tell in advance what condition they will arrive in, other than that their sex will have been reversed. Lee and Rita find a way to use quantum worlds to avoid disgorging all these people back onto an earth that is finally settling down, but it involves risks that place his and Rita's life on the line. And just to complicate the problem, some of the seconders who are supposed to be helping turn out to have an agenda of their own, one which risks the whole human race!

3 out of 5 stars Not Free SF Reader.......2007-09-03

Continues on where the first book left off pretty much exactly. Not quite as raunchy, as the discovery phase has been left behind. Some super powered benefactors, government agents, religious nuts, and more of trying to work out weird alien artifacts. Basically, they have found at what is going on, but need to work out what to do.

5 out of 5 stars Good conclusion to the trilogy.......2005-12-15

This trilogy is quite good, exploring the relationship between a person's psyche and his body. Very exciting scenes. NOT for children, there are some pretty steamy scenes in there, too. The third book is short, but good. A very satisfying conclusion to the series, although it could have been longer if the author had wanted to explore what happened to Messler and have a real struggle with the mysterious entity in the quantum world.

A March 2007 Significant 7 Editors' Pick: Not since Fight Club have a I read a book that sizzled with such fierce originality and searing vision as Steven Hall's electrifying debut novel, The Raw Shark Texts. It's a twisting, trippy thriller that tears through the landscape of language, revealing the lurking terrors uncovered in every letter of the written word. Steven Hall swims in the same surreal waters as pop-culture pioneers David Lynch and Michel Gondry, and The Raw Shark Texts deserves to be shelved somewhere between Trainspotting and Life of Pi. It pulls you under like a riptide, leaving you exhausted, exhilarated, and gasping for air.

But don't just take our word for it. We asked Audrey Niffenegger, one of the most creative contemporary writers working today, to share with readers her take on Steven Hall's debut novel, The Raw Shark Texts. Check out her exclusive Amazon guest review below. --Brad Thomas Parsons

            Guest Reviewer: Audrey Niffenegger

Audrey Niffenegger is a professor in the Interdisciplinary Books Arts MFA Program at the Columbia College Chicago Center for Book and Paper Arts. A visual artist, she shows her artwork at Printworks Gallery in Chicago. The Time Traveler's Wife, her first novel, was an international bestseller and was one of Amazon.com's Best Books of 2003. It won several awards and is being made into a major motion picture. Her visual novels, The Three Incestuous Sisters and The Adventuress, were recently published by Harry N. Abrams. Miss Niffenegger is currently hard at work on her second novel, Her Fearful Symmetry, a ghost story set in London's Highgate Cemetery.

Eric Sanderson has lost his memory, his girl, his life as he once knew it. His pre-amnesiac self is sending him letters, a sort of correspondence course on how to be Eric Sanderson. Unfortunately, this previous self didn't really have it all together either. This is too bad, because the source of all the trouble is a conceptual shark, a Ludovician shark, no less. Soon Eric is on the run, trying to piece it all together and find true love before his mind gets wiped by the shark for the twelfth and probably final time.

Steven Hall is an inventive, funny and extremely smart writer. I am a letterpress printer and a typophile, and I was drawn to his book because of the typography: The Raw Shark Texts is riddled with typographic games, codes, a flip book, and a boatload of very elegant plot devices that hinge on collisions between the Information Age and the imagination. At one point Eric and Scout, his guide/love interest, are speeding away from the conceptual shark on a motorbike. Scout eludes the shark by exploding a letter bomb, a bomb made out of old metal type; the type diverts the shark into a stream of random letterforms. At this I practically fell off the couch with admiration.

There's plenty to groove on in The Raw Sharks Texts even if you're not a type maven. There's echoes of Cyberpunk, Borges, Auster; there is adventure on the high seas, lost love, an exploration of what it means to be human in the age of intelligent machines. The Raw Sharks Texts is huge fun, and I gleefully recommend it. --Audrey Niffenegger
