5 out of 5 stars Good to know we all have the same issues.......2007-08-01

Short stories that are well presented and represent a host of situations - so one (or more) of them should apply to everyone who's been married. Nice to help you keep perspective, lots of different writing styles. Good to read 1-2 stories at a time and process what they have to offer.

4 out of 5 stars Straight Talk About Marriage.......2007-07-02

Love, marriage, divorce. For those of us who have loved or are still
loving, have been married or still married, been divorced or are going
through a divorce, we have our own love, marriage, and divorce stories
to tell. However, In The Honeymoon's Over, Chapman and Wofford-Grand
have carefully edited and compiled some of the best stories on these
three issues.

Reading each of these stories is like listening to your sisterfriend
while sipping coffee or tea. The authors are storytellers, telling
their stories in a very fluid and conversational style. Easy to read
and understand, these stories are well-written, emotional and very
revealing. You can almost feel their pain, cry their tears, and
rejoice in their decisions. After you have read these stories,
you can think about each author's perspective of love, herself,
relationships and her future. You may even think about which story
applies to you.

Although each story is distinctive in terms of the author, her story
and her writing style, the themes and the storytelling style unite
these stories into this unique book. At least one story will appeal
to every reader. The reader may be able to even identify with an
author or two. These women are sharing their stories, and
telling ours, too. I recommend reading this book.

This was not what I thought it would be. Although, there were some interesting stories, I was somewhat dissapointed.

4 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2007-04-10

This book is very well written. Definitely speaks volumes about relationships. But be ready to have the tissues on hand. :)

5 out of 5 stars BRUTALLY HONEST.......2007-03-03

I absolutely loved this book, and I am keeping it becauseI know I will read it again. As I approach my 27th wedding anniversary I feel as though I know quite a bit about what makes a marriage worth hanging on to. Nobody is married for a long time without going through major bumps in the road but many of the stories in this collection illustrate how rewarding it is to stick it out - what you end up with is so special that it is difficult to describe. Of course, not every relationship has a happy ending and I enjoyed those essays also. My personal favorite? The Electric Husband - hilarious.

P.S. Terry McMillan's rage is hurting her MUCH, MUCH more than her ex-husband - anger is human but if you don't let go of it you will be poisoned by it.

Book Description

The characters in Kevin Canty’s new collection are people we all know. People who are perhaps ourselves, searching, often in the wrong places, for something meaningful, or real, or at least, for a moment, right. Here are couples like Vincent and Laurie, who after beginning an ill-timed relationship, escape for a weekend at the beach, where they confront their inevitable separation. There is also Olive, a recovering drug addict, sent on a mission to help her nephew, who finds herself in an illicit relationship with both him and his problems. And a young boy nicknamed Flipper, sequestered for a summer at a “fat” camp, who finds unexpected comfort in the company and forbidden gifts of a pregnant teenager.

In these stories, Canty demonstrates both deep understanding and a powerful grasp of language and continues to set himself apart as a master of the short story.

5 out of 5 stars Wow!! Another dark and thought-provoking short story collection by Canty!.......2006-06-16

Having read and loved A Stranger in this World, I couldn't wait to read something else by Kevin Canty. Honeymoon, his second short fiction collection, is similar to A Stranger in this World in terms of quirky characters, disturbing storylines and dark language throughout. This one, however, is even spookier in some areas than his first book. The characters in Honeymoon have some rather interesting "adventures," most of which are disarming and don't necessarily lead to character growth. And that in my opinion is the best part of this collection because it shows human nature in its less savory moments. I love each and every offering here, but the stories I enjoyed the most were "Red Dress," "Aquarium," "Honeymoon," "Girlfriend Hit by Bus," and "Little Palaces." If you enjoy dark, surrealistic stories, then you will love Canty's writing. I recommend this book and A Stranger in this World. I cannot wait to give this author's novels a whirl.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2002-01-05

Reading Kevin Canty, you know the world is an uneasy, dangerous place, and people are peculiar, jumpy beings. The stories in Honeymoon show what's behind the mask. It's a familiar world, you think. It's also a deeply unfamiliar world. The writing is exhilarating the way the best fiction is. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Entertained an A.D.D mind!.......2001-05-18

This book was amazing. Suffering from A.D.D., it is hard for me to get into a book. THIS DID IT! Canty is amazing. I went on to read Into the great wide open. I recommend Honeymoon to anyone who loves fiction work. Plain and simple, this book is great. Click on the icon and order it.

5 out of 5 stars A "Winesburg, Ohio" for our time.......2001-05-15

Kevin Canty's style couldn't be more different from Sherwood Anderson's c. 1919 collection "Winesburg, Ohio," but that is the comparison that has stuck in my mind since reading "Honeymoon." Which is to say--"Honeymoon" will be a classic. These characters have secrets, they experience the kind of "adventures" that Anderson's characters do--i.e. the kind of adventure you can't tell anyone about afterward, either because it reveals too much about you or it's simply too difficult to find the words. I'll just say: Kevin Canty finds the words. Read this book! (Then reread "Winesburg, Ohio.")

5 out of 5 stars He only gets better with age!!!!!!!!!.......2001-04-24

What can I say about Kevin? His prose is menacing, his ideas like spider-webs, all things come and go from a certain point, but there is no telling where that character will end up in between each adventure. These stories represent what is to me, the best collection since ...; Canty's hard-hitting athletic prose will grab and pull you in. Absolutely amazing. I just don't know what to say. Every story was equally good, but I if I had to choose, I would say that "Little Palaces" and "Red Dress" were the best. All I can say is, if you like Canty's work, this is by far his best book yet. Buy it and then buy another to give to someone you love. A wonderful piece of art from a master of the short story form. I can't wait for more, be it a novel or a collection. Congrats Kevin and keep up the good work.

                  5 out of 5 stars Mckillip Classic.......2006-12-30

I just finished rereading this book. This is probably the hardest Mckillip book to read, because you really are left wondering what just happened after reading a dense, colorful passage. However, I find that the author's style is refreshing and makes this book unique. No other author fires my imagination like she does.
The Sorceress and the Cygnet is told from two perspectives: Corleu, a light-haired Wayfolk man, and Meguet Vervaine, the guardian of Ro Holding. Corleu is coerced by legends come to life (the Gold King, the Blind Lady, etc.) to find the heart of the Cygnet, which rules over Ro Holding. Corleu finds help from a bog-witch who happens to be the third daughter of the Holder of Ro Holding. Meguet Vervaine, on the other hand, must protect the Cygnet and Ro Holding at all cost.
I'm pretty sure the Sorceress and the Cygnet is out of print. I had to pay $20 for a paperback at an obscure bookstore way back when I was in high school or middle school (I was that desperate). Luckily, Sorceress and the Cygnet is being rereleased, combined with the Cygnet and the Firebird as one book. I hope Mckillip writes a third Cygnet book. Mckillip is my favorite author, and I must say that the Cygnet books contain her most memorable characters ever.

5 out of 5 stars My absolute favorite book of all time!!!.......2002-12-11

Other people have written som e wonderful reviews, and I agree that it's a shame that it's out of print--I had to pay an atrocious price for my copy. I think that another Cygnet book would be great, for there are a lot of loose ends in The Cygnet and the Firebird that need to be tied up, and I've noticed that McKillip only seems to be doing stand-alones now, good as they are. I, too, buy everything she writes, not for the plot, necessarily, but for the beauty of the images she evokes. Try Winter Rose, that is just as bitter and strange and lovely. I agree that the ending of the Sorceress and the Cygnet was very hard to understand, and I've read it a million times, seeking to understand. Does anyone know what happened?

                  5 out of 5 stars Wonderfully Lyrical.......2002-10-19

This is an absolutely wonderful book, the one that got me hooked on Patricia McKillip in the first place. A young man finds himself trapped in a story of magic and gods, used as a pawn to find the heart of the Cygnet. Wading through myths come to life, he finds himself drawn to his bloodkin and trapped in a story that began with them long ago.

It remains to this day one of my all-time favorite novels and I recommend it to anyone.

                  5 out of 5 stars Surreal!.......2002-10-15

This book is one of my all-time favorites, and it established my habit of buying whatever Patricia McKillip writes. I know of no other who creates such beautiful, yet entirely believable, surrealistic images.

If you don't like this novel, you probably won't like the others. I like it most because it's different from other fantasy stories that rely on heavy description and creating new systems of magic with it's own lingo.

                  1 out of 5 stars why bother?.......2002-08-23

This book is utterly incomprehensible and however much poetry and flowery words it is overflowing with, remains daft.
What am I trying to say? A moment to order my thoughts. That book ought to have taken similar. The author does not seem to have taken a moment or even longer, to order hers. How can you get drawn into a story when you really can't understand what the heck is going on? veiled references to folklore we don't know, it's like a nightmare-dream where the book just ISN"T MAKING SENSE.

I can understand how an author could do that, leave you with just a hazy notion that it's all interesting and exciting, but they must at leave you with enough of a feeling of familiararity or attachement to the characters to keep on reading. I got to page 48 and stopped (feeling herioc to have gotten this far). Now normally I'm a trojan reader, can read anything, dictionaries to poetry blah blah blah However I had no desire to keep reading this book and THAT in my opinion, says a great deal about the book.
This is my very biased review of the book and there must be a lot of people who disagree, as this author is very popular. Stephen Donaldson gives a recommendation - & I greatly admire him. But I couldn't get into it. I may try again, one day.

A Choice Outstanding Academic Book, Science Fiction Before 1900 is an accessible and fascinating overview of the evolution and early history of science fiction. Investigating works that marked significant turning points in the early evolution of the genre, including Frankenstein, Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court and The Time Machine, Paul Alkon places these works in context. He also discusses science fiction and its complex relationship to other genres. This book will be a great addition to the emerging field of science fiction study. A chronology of significant events, works and figures from the genre's history, notes and references and an extensive bibliographic essay with recommended reading round out the volume.

                                Book Description

Andrea Immer has one of the world's best, and least pretentious, wine palates. In her debut cookbook she proves that her taste in food is just as finely honed and down-to-earth. Presenting 125 recipes that pair magnificently with wine, she shows how to bring these great flavor combinations to the dinner table—with minimum fuss and at minimal cost. Her food and wine matches are guaranteed to make even weeknight meals special occasions.

Wine enthusiasts and epicures alike could not be in better hands: World-renowned Master Sommelier Andrea Immer is also a graduate of the French Culinary Insitute, where she refined her already formidable cooking skills and understanding of food flavors, and where today she is dean of wine studies. In her new book, she solves that most vexing dinner dilemma—which wines to serve with what foods.

Drawing on her sophisticated understanding of tastes, she offers up internationally inspired delicacies like Cumin-crusted Lamb; Fettucine with Proscuitto, Sage, and Mushrooms; or Tarte Tatin with Bourbon and Vanilla. She also offers down-home dishes like Fast-Track Baby Back Ribs, Turkey Quesadillas with Sesame Sweet Potato–Mole Sauce, or Cheese Grits with Shrimp and Chorizo. Everyday Dining with Wine is filled with recipes emphasizing a robust harmony of flavors for every course from soup to dessert.

Andrea believes that wine should be a part of everyday dining—for both pleasure and health. With this book in hand, you can choose a recipe and then find the wine that complements it best, or start with a special bottle and discover its perfect food partner. Here, too, are Andrea’s answers to such common and perplexing questions as “Where should I store my wine?”; “Once I open a bottle, how long will it be good?”; “Does the shape and quality of glassware matter?”

Wine and food belong together, whether for a weeknight meal or a dinner party. With Everyday Dining with Wine there is no guesswork involved in making any meal a cause for celebration.

I love Andrea - I watch her on fine living network. She truly wants to make wine accesible to everybody. The recipes in here are very nice but the most helpful is of course, her wine recommendations. She makes both general and specific wine recommendations. I have spent the past summer getting to know some whites I never tried before - Riesling, Voignier, Gewurtztraminer and I absolutely am in love with them because of this book!
So this book is good for beginners to intermediates - if you really are a true newbie and don't know where to start - I would also highly recommend The Wine Club by Maureen Petrosky.

This is a fabulous resource of recipes for those who like fresh, fast meals with fewer ingredients. It's also an education on wines, grape types and regions. I love it. I recommend it to everyone. You won't be disappointed!

I received this cookbook as a present at Christmas this year. One of my New Year's resolutions was to take a cookbook, use it for a week, then try the next one. Andrea Immer's cookbook has lasted for several weeks, due to popular (okay, my husband's) demand.

The recipes are mostly on target, although I think I must have a hotter oven than Andrea's. Her use of herbs and wine reduction sauces are superb. I like that most recipes use just a few ingredients. The roasted Brussels sprouts (with balsamic vinegar and sage) are the best treatment of this difficult veggie I've ever had. The Chicken with Mojo, the shrimp ceviche, the short ribs ragu, oh, I do go on. They are all great. Really. And when you pair the food with Andrea's choice of wine, the experience is sublime. Buy this cookbook for yourself and for your best friends. It is worth it.

Any quibbles I have would be in the lack of photographs, and the management of the oven temperature. Some things seem to cook faster than the cookbook states.

When Sarah Ferguson first burst upon the world's consciousness as the soon-to-be wife of Great Britain's Prince Andrew, she was redheaded, freckled, and most definitely full-figured. Several years later, the red hair and the freckles remain, but the husband and the weight have both been shed, leaving the Duchess of York a slimmed-down single mom with a new career as, among other things, a spokesperson for Weight Watchers. In Dining with the Duchess, the author doesn't give any marital advice, but she does share her favorite low-fat recipes from the Weight Watchers program--everything from a simple weeknight meal to a festive holiday occasion. Menus range from the hearty warmth of a Tuscan dinner featuring Warm White Bean Salad, Lemon Chicken, Spicy Polenta, and Bittersweet Fruit to a holiday buffet that includes Provençal Beef Tenderloin, Risotto di Pavia, and Blueberry Zabaglione, among other delights. There are menus for birthdays and for New Year's Eve, for a night spent at home in front of the TV and for a follow-up to a day spent skiing. Each menu is introduced by the Duchess with an anecdote from her personal life. Dining with the Duchess lets you eat like royalty without getting Henry VIII's waistline.

This book is really nice and it lets you dine divinely, but the level of difficulty is pretty high. A lot of the entrees aren't something that you would fix your family on a regular Tuesday night, but they are nice menus for a dinner party or a romantic evening! Afterall, there is a reason that she is the "Duchess"!

5 out of 5 stars I LOVE This book and I don't even have to count calories!.......2001-02-15

I'm one of those lucky few that doesn't have a problem with calories, so I can pretty much eat whatever I want. Even so, I like to eat healthy and absolutely LOVE this cookbook. Everything I have made has been outstanding. Take it from someone who can eat the full-leaded stuff...this cookbook is outstanding and rivals any full-fat book out there. You won't be disappointed.

Dining With the Duchess : Making Every Day Meals a Special Occasion delivers on its promise. This delightful book not only gives readers an enormous amount of simple yet creative, low-fat recipes, it also provides us with wonderful tidbits from her personal life. And in the process, it makes any old Monday night a special occasion.

Sarah Mountbatten-Windsor York comes across as honest, down-to-earth and very funny. Royal-bashers should put their clubs away; this book is ripe with fantastic meal suggestions and real humanity. Yet aside from the heart-healthy (and mouth happy) recipes, the real joy of this book is when The Duchess gets personal, giving us humorous and sometimes moving snippets from her life.

This is an unusual cookbook. Not because it's authored by royalty, but because it's authored by a high-spirited, beautiful and talented woman who is fearless in the pursuit of herself. You just KNOW this woman is a wonderful mother and her two beautiful daughters will grow up to become strong, independent women with not only a royal title, but a sense of humor and a sense of self.

The Duchess' last book, My Story, was a fascinating and shamelessly honest confessional work, on a par with Anne Sexton and Sylvia Plath.

My wish is that The Duchess writes another book, perhaps a novel.

Anybody who has ever struggled with self-image issues, calorie problems or depression should read this fabulous cookbook. It's a must for people who eat.

5 out of 5 stars An overall wonderful cookbook.......1998-11-29

As a Weight Watchers member, entertaining has been one of my biggest challenges. Many of my tried and true recipes are ones that I am no longer comfortable serving - brie en croute, hot artichoke dip, stuffed sausage bread. This book has been a lifesaver! I have literally found something for every occasion in this gem. I've yet to find a child that didn't love the Honey-Dipped Crunchy Chicken Nuggets or an adult who couldn't believe that the various appetizers were not high in fat or calories. Not only are the Paremsan Cheese Straws delicious, but they are a snap to make.

The photos are beautiful and the layout and design of this book is really wonderful. The recipes are collected into menus and each contains not only the points per serving but also a tip about the recipe.

                                Please, Sarah, write another cookbook!

I am really enjoying this cookbook! The recipes are modern and very chic, without being too fancy. Sarah's commentaries are light, and the thematic organization of recipes ("Saturday Night with a Movie," "Midday Respite") is very fun. The colorful photos are great, and the tips at the end of each recipe are useful. This book would be great for anyone interested in low-fat, delicious cuisine that doesn't skimp on flavor. As a Weight Watchers member, I appreciate the modern format and current recipes in this book. It's a winner!
