Book Description
This critically acclaimed debut is a modern Huckleberry Finn, a heartrending tale of wit and grace that charts the coming of age of a color-blind white boy struggling to find meaning in a world divided by poverty and race. One of the most memorable characters in recent fiction, Conrad Clay is just beginning life. Yet all around him things are ending: His parents' marriage is crumbling, his father loses his job during the closing of the Alameda naval base, his family faces eviction from their house, and his beloved grandmother is dying. As betrayal and poverty take their toll, Conrad's efforts to create a new family for himself lead us on a journey alternately hilarious and desolating. Filled with tenderness and a cast of unforgettable characters, The Color Midnight Made is at heart a profound portrait of America.

Contemporary take on Huckleberry Finn with a few flaws.......2006-04-09
I'm sure Winer had various influences when writing this novel, but it strikes me as a contemporary reworking of Huckleberry Finn. Like Huck, Conrad Clay has a broken home and alcoholic father, resists the conformity of school and organized religion, and tells "whoppers" sometimes but is essentially good at heart, with the gift of feeling sympathy for others. Most importantly, he has a real connection to African-American culture; in fact, one wonders if Winer wrote this novel in light of the discovery that Twain may have modeled Huck's speech on that of black children. Conrad is able to move between cultural worlds and draws emotional sustenance from a nearby black family (in this, Winer reverses stereotypes, as it's the white family that is dysfunctional). The strengths of this novel, then, are its dialogue (the various speech-patterns of the East Bay, CA community) and a well-developed moral viewpoint. Regarding this latter strength, Jane Smiley, Wendell Berry, and others have argued that Twain's major fault was an individualistic desire to escape from community, instead of responsibly attempting to solve social problems. Generally speaking, there will be no "lighting out for the territory" for the young narrator, and without giving away the plot, I'll just say that the novel is a bildungsroman that involves Conrad's growing awareness of, and sympathy for, the problems of others in the community.
That said, the novel has some flaws that keep me from recommending it without reservation. I think Winer over-idealizes childhood and the black community at times. Sometimes the childish, innocent things Conrad does are a little cloying, too "TV Movie of the Week." Meanwhile, his surrogate family is very multicultural-for example, it includes a [...] couple-and it felt, as much as I hate to use this term, a little "politically correct." To the extent that Winer endorses a "Well, we may not make much money, but we get by for all that" viewpoint, he can be said to minimize the very real and serious effects of economic inequality upon black families. Most seriously, in my view, Winer never really figured out just how old Conrad was. We often get physical descriptions and accounts of events that sound like they're coming from a much older person. For example, in the opening pages the narrator says "Streetdust soaked up oilspots under buzzing telephone lines, which sagged low and heavy from too many people talking through them." This is a clever description, but I'm just not sure a fifth-grader, even a genius poet in the making, would use figurative language in that way. This fluctuation in Conrad's mental age sometimes causes a discordance in the plot. There's one point, for example (I'll try to phrase this ambiguously, but if you're worried about spoilers, you might want to stop reading here) where it's clearly indicated that Conrad (a) knows what adultery is and (b) takes a certain physical object in a neighbor's house as an indicator of whether or not adultery is happening in his own environment. Yet later in the book, Conrad suddenly seems blissfully ignorant, and when there's a confrontation, Conrad is trying hard to figure it all out: "I still wasn't sure exactly what was going on," he thinks. Now, this is a time when an author should *show*, not *tell*: if Conrad really is too young to know what's going on, that should be apparent in the way Winer narrates the story through Conrad's perspective. If Winer has to actually make his character think, "I still wasn't sure exactly what was going on," that betrays a certain insecurity on Winer's part as to the mental age of his character. This problem wasn't big enough to keep me from enjoying the book, but I didn't believe in Conrad quite as fully as I believe in the reality of Huck Finn.
In sum, this book is well worth ordering through Amazon because of its sharp dialogue, vivid rendering of a community, and clear moral perspective. However, I also think that Winer's next novel will be much better.
A Moving Modern Coming of Age Novel.......2005-07-25
I met the author of this novel, who spent much time in New York City, and writes with the passion of experience and the knowledge of life in the streets. The hero of this novel is a young white man living in a primarily black community in a shipyard town near San Francisco. He goes from foster home to foster home and attends Christian churches attended by blacks. While its about identity, its also about friendship (he befriends a blind man who draws a new color thats symbolic of the soul). It's also about tolerance, humanity and a boy's journey into manhood. It's a modern coming of age novel. It's well-written and soulful. Dickens, while not in an obvious way, directly influenced some of the characteristics- the waif who is taken in by a "family" and taught good values. The book is very modern and contains language that is very realistic and down-to-earth, like its tone. I look forward to a sequel if it is ever written.
A good read.......2004-07-18
This book is interesting and a good read. Characters in the book are well developed throughout the story and create a sense of reality for the reader. I would highly recommend those who read this book to read the whole book at once so they don't forget important details throughout the story and grasp the full meaning of this book.
Good book.......2003-09-11
I enjoyed this book. It reminded me of some aspects of my own childhood (parents not getting along, father getting drunk and swearing, feeling alone in the world, unhappy about family life). At first I thought it was a bit slow but then it picked up (not too far into it) and never lost my attention after that. The author keeps an even pace between hardship and humor so one does not get depressed reading the book. The part I remember the most (and still gives me a chuckle) is when Conrad is in church (forced to go my his mother who does not attend with him). Apparently the church choir is predominately white (if not all white) and a black church choir comes to visit. Conrad is bored and not very interesetd in the strained singing of the white church choir but when the black church choir comes in with their own unique way it makes Conrad sit up and pay attention and he thinks to himself "We have a situation!" If you didn't get a chuckle out of that you'll have to read the book and see how the author described it. It is poignant.
I recommend this book. It is an easy and relativly fast read. I loaned it to my 15-year-old nephew. He has to do several book reports for school and needs something that he can read that isn't too long. I felt this was a good balance between not too long but would also hold his attention and be a pleasure to read.
Innocence and Truth.......2002-11-12
Conrad Clay, the ten-year-old protagonist of "The Color Midnight Made" is the center of his own universe...one that's slowly but inexorably going to pieces. Growing up white in a predominantly black area of San Francisco isn't easy--but "Con" is adaptable and trusting. Perhaps too trusting. As he watches his family crumble, and his relationship with his best buddy "Loop" (a derivative of "Froot Loops")grow distant, Con moves through the world like a lost soul.
Andrew Winer has created a character in Conrad equal to Holden Caulfield--a rebellious, naive and innocent young man searching for truth. "The Color Midnight Made" is darkly poetic, moving, and wonderfully told. This is a story that stays in your mind long after you've finished reading it.

The Battle For Dominaria Rages on.......2007-04-23
After a big win at the end of the first book of the Invasion Cycle, "Invasion", the people of Dominaria feel pretty confident about their chances at defeating the Phyrexian menace once and for all. However, things begin to look grim, when after a 3-day celebration there are suddenly hundreds of thousands of Phrexians surrounding the Dominarian forces. Just when things begin to look grim, Urza and his fellow Planeswalkers transport the troops to much safer places to wage battle (at least where the odds are slightly better).
After some minor victories here and there by the Dominarian Defenders, the Planeswalkers gather for the biggest battle yet, an attack on Phrexia itself in an effort to bring a quick end to the war. However, all is not as it seems and it seems like everyone essentially has their own agendas. Plotting, betrayl, and murder are rampant in this the second book of the Invasion Cycle.
In order to save the world, all of the people must be united to fight for the safety and good of all of Dominaria instead of pursuing their own agendas. But just when it looks like all is well for the defenders, tragedy seems to strike Dominaria's two biggest heroes, Yawgmoth is attempting to seduce Urza to join his forces in the hopes of learning everything there is to know about Phyrexia, but also holds the soul of Gerrard's lost love Hanna in return for his devout service. How will it all play out, with alliances falling apart and plenty of dirty dealing, the war begins to look bleak for all of Dominaria.
This is another fantastic book in the Magic the Gathering universe, the story is rich, the characters are awesome, and the descriptions of the battle is vivid and life-like. If you love to read about the adventures in Magic the Gathering, you will definetly not be disappointed in this book or even this cycle for that matter.
yay.......2004-10-24
The read this book at midnight the day I got it. I could not put it down. I just had to finish this book so I could read Apocalypse and finish the story. I play Magic now and I only started reading the books to understand the cards but I immediately fell in love with the books. This is a must read.
PS. Phyrexia is taken from Dante's Inferno
Non stop action...yes, it's a book........2004-02-16
Planeshift is one of those rare books that has extreme action that never quits. It seriously felt like watching a movie. The violence is descriptive, and very captivating, but, for me, that's not quite enough to completely quench my thirst. First of all, there is little character development in this book: it's all fighting. However, the most interesting characters in the book are the dragons, specifically the Primevals. The five mighty gods rampage about Dominaria, showing their very distinctive natures. We see how the dragons change as the story progresses, until the final, breathtaking outcome. However, back on the human/metathran etc side, we have less interesting characters, but more battles. Consider this: billions, yes, BILLIONS of Phyrexians march towards our helpless heros, and at the last minute, they are seperated by Urza to complete seperate tasks. Basically, aside from the gory fights, the humanoid sections are fairly boring. Finally, we get to the Planeswalkers. Here is where the overall story really matters, and where the twists really occur. With the 'Walkers ongoing struggle to fight Phyrexia, the temptation of such power begins to corrupt the 'Walkers to the point of turning on one another. The one complaint I could have with the fighting portions is the whole 'We can kill anything' sceme. Sure, our heros are battle trained, but the Phyrexians are brutal killing machines, bred for that purpose. Most of them have blades and weapons integrated right onto them! I think there certainly could have been more outright casualties. Anyways, I recommend this book as a good read to anyone who loves Magic, any fantasy fan, or just anyone looking for a (literally) bloody good time.
Non stopped action!.......2003-08-27
This is a great novel by J. Robert King which i think is truely awsome. The story line is good, but you sort of need to read Invasion first, and perhaps Thran prior to that. It is nonstopped action that takes you from on board the Weatherlight to inside Urza's titan engine, to fighting with the dragons. I highly recommend it, and the other books in the saga, as well as all books by J.R. king
Great but not perfect........2002-07-15
As the story progresses, it is not all that important that one has to read the previous books in this theme, however in order to understand what is going on one needs to read the previous books as well. This entire set (called cycle) takes up about 930 pages total, unfortunately having read them all, this story could have been compressed to half of that. Which is the only flaw of these books; they are repetitive, especially when it comes to combat (after all, there are only so many ways to kill an opponent). Asides from that, its worth buying.

Customer Reviews:
The best book of the trilogy.......2005-06-28
Aliens: Female War, is easily the best book out of the trilogy it ends. Perhaps that is a product of Steve Perry finally becoming completely comfortable with his characters, perhaps it is the inclusion of Ellen Ripley.
As with the other books, the pacing in this volume is fast and thrilling, keeping with the feel of the movies, and as is tradition with this series, the threat level is stepped up from the last volume so the threat is more horrific than ever- a massive Queen of all Queens, the Alien that controls them all and has the ability to telepathically control humans, as well.
The character development is brilliant, and I love the way the author manages to include Ripley without shattering cannon. I was wondering how that would work out, but the Perry's handled it very well.
Over all, it's a fast fun read and a nice conclusion to the trilogy: Earth Hive, Nightmare Asylum, and now Female War. I recommended it for fans of the movies.
Demise of a great franchise.......2004-04-16
I loved the first book! The second was kinda boring but i stomached it to get to the 3rd. I made it half way through this book and stopped.
Nice..........2003-05-28
Very good alien novel that stays true to the ALIENS movie / colonial marines idea...
Should have been a movie.......2002-09-02
Let me also add that this is by far the best and most creative story of the first 3 books, and maybe more as well. I feel that the story in this book should have played into a movie somewhere. It would have been alot better than ALien Ressurection I feel. 5 stars again.
Part III and the final chapter to Perry's alien invasion.......2002-08-31
This book has the best story out of the first three of the series. In this one, the two main characters join up with Ripley (from the movies) and return to the home planet of the aliens and capture their queen mother (queen of the queens) to release her on Earth so all the aliens flock to her, creating a perfect target for a nuclear weapon... you get the idea. The one thing you have to keep in mind while reading this book is that is was written before "Alien3" was filmed, and you'll know why I told you this while reading. This one as well deserves 5 stars.

Book Description
Billie only wanted what all children want -- the warmth and security of family, the human connectedness that comes from belonging. What she got was a nightmare without end. Dark Horse is proud to present the third volume in the remastered Aliens series, Aliens: Female War. Written by The Mask screenplay writer Mark Verheiden and illustrated by The Maxx artist/creator Sam Kieth, Female War is a revised edition of what was previously titled Aliens: Earth War.
Customer Reviews:
why this book is not so good!.......2002-06-29
I hated the art in this one. you can see from the start the art is very good, very detailed. But if you look at the last few pages it is very visible that the art has gone sloppy! Ripley's character looks and feels very lifeless and dull, I can imagine her in this comic talking like she's extremely bored and tired. The aliens were very plain, they looked balloony and cartoonish. The drawings past the first half of the book look like sketches, they looked very wobbly and almost as if the artist was rushing them. On the better side the story might interest you as it deals with Ripley's psychic relationship with the Aliens, and it gets in depth with Amy and Burt, the two characters who were featured in Nightmare Asylum. I didn't prefer this kind of story too much, but you may. Overall, horrible art, ok story that might be a good story to other people.
Modified "Earth War".......1999-06-13
This is "Earth War" with the names of the principal characters changed. Newt becomes "Billie" and Hicks becomes "Wilks,". Needless to say this weakens the book quite a bit!
Lackluster and Predictable.......1998-09-30
Although I am a big fan of this series, I read this and thought.....Someone ripped a big page out of Lovecraft and failed miserably. The characters were the only redeaming part of this book. The dialogue between Billie and Ripley was outstanding. I only wish they would have continued on with the adventures of Billie.
A good sequel.......1998-04-16
This was a pretty good sequel, but the others in the series are slightly better. It really needs another sequel, because a lot of things were not resolved. And the aliens seemed more wimpy than usual, too.
Outsatandung Aliens book!.......1997-04-03
The best out of the three books,Aliens: Hiveworld, Aliens: Aslyum Nightmare, and Aliens: Female War. Billie and Wilks finally meet the famous Lt. Ellen Ripley. They gather dreamers that are being called by the Mother of all Aliens. They steal a ship and find the Aliens Homeworld and capture the Mother Alien to bring her to Earth. After leaving her on Earth for a while the Aliens on Earth should come to her. They set off a nuclear bomb to go off , I think 6 or maybe 9 months from then. Billie goes off to find Amy, the girl in transmissions. Billie finds her father and her and flee Earth. This hopefully is not the last of this series, it badly needs a sequel. You should get this book if you the liked the Aliens Movies, if you have not seen them you should. The 2nd is my favorite. CM

Two Great Aliens Novels.......2004-01-23
Steve Perry has done a wonderful job taking the horrible beasts of the screen and comics into novel format. Though these books dont have as much aliens as the movies, when they do it is horrifiying and great at the same time.
Instead of getting one book at the time just get the omnibus edition. This one, comtaining Earth Hive and Nightmare Asylum (which are the first two)has Wilks and Billie fighting the hordes of aliens as Earth is being taken over by the beasts.
In all two great novels.

Customer Reviews:
Reliably delicious!.......2007-09-24
Every single thing I cook from this book is a winner. And I am the queen of modifying recipes from cookbooks, but I don't change Dreena's recipes. It is getting to the point where this cookbook nearly never makes it back to my bookshelf. The recipes are also so unique and yet use ingredients that are so accessible (and good for you!). And I am now cooking with grains I thought I hated. The recipes are full of options and explanations and extra information that it is just a fun read. The food is really, truly, reliably delicious! I think this cookbook is a must for even the most experienced vegan cook, and should be a must for every cook! Thank you so much for this cookbook, Dreena, and the others to come!
BEST Vegan cookie recipes ever!!.......2007-05-30
This cookbook is now one of my favorites, if only for its cookie recipes! Every single one has turned out beautifully, with the perfect soft texture, and she uses natural ingredients like maple syrup and canola oil rather than vegan margarines and egg replacers. I also like that the recipes are small and make only one batch of cookies. As much as I like to bake, I really don't need 36 cookies begging to be eaten! In addition to the fabulous cookie recipes, I ADORE the chickpea ratatouille...that's definitely a new favorite.
Vive Dreena Burton!.......2007-05-01
Vive Le Vegan is by far my most favourite vegan cookbook. I love how Dreena uses whole foods, non-hydrogenated oils, unrefined sugars and fresh ingredients to create delicious dishes that my whole family loves. I feel really good feeding my children these healthy treats and snacks. The recipes are well organized, easy to follow, and come out perfectly every time. I especially love Vive Le Vegan's focus on Hemp foods and whole grains. I can't say enough good things about this cookbook! I recommend it to all my friends and family, whether or not they are vegans!
Extremely Disappointing!.......2007-04-24
This was one of the most disappointing cookbooks I ever bought. First of all, there are very few recipes and the recipes there are, all use the same ingredients, most of which are hard to find and not what most people have on hand. I usually have 5 to 7 different baking flours/grains in the house. I think that should be sufficient but it wasn't for this book. The normal seeds weren't either. Green vegetables seem to be nonexistent in these recipes also. The entire cooking palette was very limited. The recipes seem to be aimed at people who want to experiment with unusual grains and seeds and are sensitive to wheat and soy.
I recieved this book about 3 weeks ago and still haven't found a recipe I both had the ingredients for and wanted to cook at the same time. I doubt that I ever will. Another real drawback to this book is that there are no photos of the meals. There are pictures of the author and her family if you care about that, not my bag, but none of the meals you might want to cook.
My advice - Save your money. The vegan recipes online are much better, most of them have pictures, and they're free! There's only one reason you might want to buy this book, that's if you have a brand new baby that you want to raise vegan. There is a section about raising a vegan baby with instructions on preparing a vegan diet for infants which looks helpful.
easy, tasty, and healthy.......2007-02-18
I bought this at first because it was recommended on a vegan site I often visit, and I'm glad I did! The recipes are clear, easy to make, usually involve simple basic ingredients, and are both tasty and healthy (i.e. they don't contain a lot of oil, which many vegan baked goods do). The only thing that isn't readily available is hemp seed nuts, but I've substituted other nuts with no problems. The Lenitil Sunflower Pie is particularly good--its on my regular rotation of meals now. I only wish this book was longer--but I will definitely check out other of Dreena Burton's books.
