Book Description
In Stoning the Keepers at the Gate, police psychologist Lawrence N.Blum, Ph.D.looks at the role of law enforcement in modern times and argues that, while bad cops need to be rooted out, blanket condemnation of the police threatens the very liberties that make such condemnation possible, as well as the safety of the American public in their homes and lives. Blum argues that the enormous stresses officers experience -- from violent physical attack to unrewarded or miusunderstood acts of heroism -- require special understanding, an understanding that is often missing from police departments themselves.
Blum provides a unique insight into the dynamics, practices, and activities within police agencies that influence police officers' actions, and that often hide the real sources of police behaviors that are thought of as faulty, insensitive, or inappropriate.
A passionate call not only for understanding but a reappraisal of whose actions are scrutinized within and outside of police agencies, police accountability, and the nature of policing itself in the twenty-first century. Stoning the Keepers at the Gate is a dynamic and fascinating analysis of the role of law enforcement today.

A Must Read For All Police Administrators and Officers.......2006-02-24
This book was so accurate to what happens in the real life of what happens to an officer under duress from the police environemnt as well as the public's view of law enforcement. This book was a mental saver for me as I had to endure nearly four years of public and departmental scrutiny for my actions with a life or death lethal encounter with a suspect. I have had 7 years of law enforcement experience with the Chandler PD in Arizona and was the first officer charged since Wyatt Earp in the state of Arizona with an on duty shooting. I was crucified in the media, by my department and city and was laid the blame for all that was wrong with law enforcement in the state. A jury trial and acquital as well as a state police board review proved that the only wrong doing was actually from my peers in the department, city as well as the county attorney who made my case a platform for political endeavors as well as media's facination with categorizing which case they will champion and who they will make a scape goat. In Arizona, a good cop is a dead cop, which makes for good press. I have suffered tremendously and have found little support in attempts to get a law enforcement career again due to the politics. Lawrence Blum's books (Force Under Pressure and Stoning the Keepers Gates) have been a blessing only second to reading my Bible that have helped me make sense of my emotions, tribulations and my future. I use his material when I speak to other officers, church groups and even prisoners to help them understand the same things I now do. Good book, good reading, and a good way to save your sanity and possiblily the sanity and life of a fellow officer in need.
Great Morale Boost.......2003-01-07
Having spent 27 years with Cincinnati PD and now a Sheriff's Office, I can not recommend this book highly enough for every law enforcement officer in the country. Even though this book seems geared toward the public on understanding their relationship with law enforcement, it does an excellent job of cheerleading those in law enforcement who are still committed to doing police work. Every city manager, county commissioner, council member, etc. should read this book to see why they should stand behind their law enforcement agencies if they want to improve them. It's hard to hit a home run if the home team fans keep 'booing.' As Americans we need to cheer the everyday heroic acts of law enforcement officers, not just when it's politically correct. Dr. Blum explains why the 'occuptaional bigotry' against police by some in the media creates a lack of spirit in officers that causes them to hesitate to do their jobs, which may cost them or other innocent people their lives. Stoning the Keepers at the Gate is a great morale booster for anyone in law enforcement.

Palestinian-American detective Ben Kamal and Israeli detective Danielle Barnea soon discover that the answer to this blood-drenched puzzle lies as much in the past as in the present, with the clues leading from a Nazi labor camp to the forefront of modern biotech research, while leaving a trail of deception and death behind. At the center of the mystery lies Paul Hessler, a labor camp escapee and New York billionaire with secrets that stretch back over sixty years. Hessler is also in possession of a miraculous medical discovery that could affect the lives of thousands--inlcluding Ben and Danielle's unborn child. To protect this discovery, and to rescue the future form the hidden evils of the past, Ben and Danielle must come face-to-face with the Keepers of the Gate.
Customer Reviews:
Well Written Book!.......2005-07-31
This was another good book in the Ben and Danielle series. The
main character in this book is Oaul Hessler. He is a concentration camp escapee who has become a New York billionaire. He has donated tremendous sums of money to Israel. He
also has some deep secrets that stretch back to the days of World Wra II.His corporation and the Hessler Institute has come
into possession of a medical discovery that can help mankind as well as Ben and Danielle's baby.
You also have the unexplained murders of several high school
students, both Palestenian and Israeli. It is left to Ben and
Danielle to unravel this mystery.
You also have the murders of three elderly Holocaust survivors. There is no explanation to these murders.
Another element in the book is the "Keepers of the Gate" a group that has been responsible for tracking down old Nazi war criminals. All of these factors added up make for a good book.
Read this book. It is very good.
Painful to read.......2002-12-22
I don't expect great literature when I read a detective story, but it would be nice if the plot was at least remotely believable and the author had some facility with the English language. Unfortunately, neither is true here. I actually winced when reading portions of this book and finally found it too painful to continue. I am impressed with one thing: that an author of such mediocrity could get his work published.
A more serious Jon Land.......2002-03-12
For years, I associated Jon Land with cheesy yet fun adventure stories that featured bigger than life heroes (in particular, Blaine McCracken) battling James Bond-style villains bent on world conquest, usually aided by some superhuman henchmen. Yes, they were often silly, but they were also good entertainment.
Recently, however, Land has gotten more realistic and serious with his series of novels featuring Ben Kamal and Danielle Barea, a pair of detectives and star-crossed lovers (he's Palestinean, she's Israeli) who take on mysteries and conspiracies that often extend beyond the borders of their homes.
As is the case in most of this series, the two usually deal with separate mysteries that turn out to be linked. In this case, they must deal with the murders of several teenagers who attended the same school as well as the attempted murder of a philanthropic billionaire with a secret past. There are traces of Land's love of secret organizations and conspiracies, and it all comes together nicely.
Just because Land has become more serious does not mean he has gotten worse; in fact, there is a maturity in his writing that is an improvement. Nonetheless, I kind of miss the sillier Land and hope that some day McCracken returns.
A keeper.......2001-05-27
Once again some top of the line entertainment from Jon Land. Palestinian American detective Ben Kamal and Israeli detective Danielle Barnea meet up again in this outstanding adventure. Holocaust survivors are being murdered. A labor camp escapee and New York billionaire loses a son to an assassin. High school students start mysteriously dying. This novel covers a lot of territory as most of it begins in the Middle East slowly spreading to Europe and ending in New York. Biological research as well as secrets of the holocaust are just a couple of the things involved in this top of the line adventure. Jon Land has created a vivid novel with colorful characters and locales, with surprises in store at every turn. Keep it up Jon, you're on my 'A' list.
Highly recommended.
Jon Land's Done It Again!!!.......2001-05-24
Once again, Jon Land has weaved a web of mystery, action, history, and drama in such magnificent fashion that it is impossible to put it down until you have read the entire book...twice! I have been following Jon's career closely since it began nearly twenty years ago with the Doomsday Spiral, and have watched the style of his writing and the quality of his characters grow with each successive novel. After publishing a series of books staring such action-packed duos as Blaine McCracken and Johnny Wareagle, and Jared Kimberlain and Winston Peete, Jon has taken a different turn with his latest heroes, Ben Kamal and Danielle Barnea. This fourth installment in the Kamal/Barnea series shows the couple battling present day terrorists and ghosts from Nazi Germany. Keepers of the Gate also contains an incredible description of near-future medical science that only Jon Land's imagination could have created. A trademark quality in many of Jon's books is the introduction of something astonishing, something just outside the scope of the reader's imagination, such as a laser that utilizes water particles, or a cure for air pollution that is bastardized into a world-threatening weapon. Jon also creates characters that stir emotions and leave the reader breathless with worry, fear, and anticipation. If this is your first Jon Land Novel, I suggest you begin here and work your way back to the Doomsday Spiral. If you are like me, and anxiously await your annual Jon Land fix, you will not be disappointed!!!
Customer Reviews:
Rambling Nonsense.......2007-05-13
This book was a complete disappointment. I was expecting a coherent explanation of the theological progression of the Heaven's Gate Cult. I was hoping especially for a discussion about the cycle of disillusionment and revitalization that occurred in the cult's history. What I got was a rambling series of non sequiturs trying to relate the cult to every mythological tidbit on the planet. I found myself skipping pages while the author would go off on some strange tangent. You know how some people cannot tell a story because they keep getting distracted. This was it. It's like the author had swallowed Joseph Campbell's collected works put them in a blender and poured it out. If a book ever needed an editor. This was it. Most of the time I donate books to libraries or thrift stores when I am finished with them. I am chucking this one into the recycle bin. Don't waste your money.

Arrival of a new Gatekeeper..........2003-10-30
The teenagers of the Gatekeepers team have interesting powers. Ruriko has control over the Gate of Life, which gives her the ability to heal her comrades. Megumi creates a shield with the Gate of the Inpenetrable Barrier, also known as the Gate of Iron Will. Reiko uses the Gate of Enchantment to dazzle her enemies, making it easier for her friends to attack. Fei opens the Gate of ? (I don't remember what her Gate is called, but she summons spirit animals from it to fight for her--In the anime she opens the Gate of Fire, which is much better. Kaoru becomes incredibly strong when she opens the Gate of Strength. Shun, the male leader of the Gatekeepers directs gale force winds through the use of his Gate of Wind. And then the other guy Reiji wields the Gate of Darkness, often with murderous endings. Except for Reiji, Fei, and Shun, none of these Gates are really dangerous or impressive. In the manga, Fei summons a giant (and I mean GIANT) panda to fight in her place, and it is usually pretty effective. But sparkles from Reiko don't stop the enemy from attacking; it just makes it harder for them to do so since they can't see the target. Megumi's Gate of Iron Will protects herself and her friends, but it's hard to win playing defense. Ask any coach. Ruriko's Gate of Healing is useful, but not in battle, just afterwards.
But in this book, we are introduced to a Gatekeeper with real power. Yukino is a young girl Shun finds while on a skiing trip, and she controls the Gate of Ice and Snow. She can summon incredible blizzards and freeze her enemies solid in seconds. But she has some secrets and it is getting harder for the group to trust others...

Customer Reviews:
An interesting read. Not perfect, but not bad........2004-08-14
I've read all three books of the kingdoms, and, if you ignore the errors in continuity, they're overall a fairly good read. They language used seems forced and archaic (perhaps intentionally), so it takes a few reads for us average Joe (or Jane) Sixpack's to get the nuances and follow the plot development. This series actually presents the main characters (and several of the lesser characters) in a much more human light than many other series I've seen (my opinion, of course).
My biggest gripe about this entire series is the lack of wrap-up. There were many questions left un-answered, with many characters that were well developed suddenly dropping off the face of the earth, as it were.
Perhaps I just like a nice ending to my books. They don't have to all be of the happily ever after formula, but I DO enjoy seeing things like the heros getting home to a throng of cheering people, highlighted by a desperately worried and royally peeved mother, for instance.
Again, overall, a decent read, but the ending leaves a LOT to be desired.
Ehhh.......2001-10-02
I could take this book or leave it. The story line was OK, but not something I'd recommend to anyone but an avid reader.
Great ending!.......2000-03-30
Most people seem to think that the sequel(s) never live up to the original in a series. That is not true in this case, though. With a subtle ease, the author seems to draw the reader into the novel despite it being a resolution to the series. And when finished you, the reader, are left with the accurate impression that you have read something of very good quality. A great ending to a great trilogy.
