Sex is good medicine according to Felice Dunas, who specializes in Chinese acupuncture and the health benefits of erotic love. In Passion Play Dunas explain how fantastic sex can bolster one's immune system, strengthen internal organs, and secure emotional wellbeing. Using traditional Chinese medicine, Dunas offers specific sexual prescriptions for common Western ailments, such as how to strengthen overtaxed kidneys, how to shift erotic gears once a baby arrives, or how to fire up an emotionally distant relationship. Dunas's poetic approach (she uses musical and ancient Chinese metaphors throughout) along with her extensive understanding of the issues and fears that inhibit contemporary sexual relationships makes Passion Play a gem in the sea of sex manuals.

4 out of 5 stars Passion Play.......2002-05-25

The books content is straight forward and to the point unlike other books that "sugar coat" definitions, etc. I enjoyed learning about the Ancient Chinese.

5 out of 5 stars Well worth reading!.......1999-11-26

Excellent book! Well worth every penny I spent on it. It offers unique view of sexuality. Concrete excersises and good explanation of underlying concepts make it a must read for anyone interested in expanding their sexual experiences.

5 out of 5 stars A Book About Sex and Passion for Both Partners.......1998-02-09

Felice Dunas has written a book that starts off with health, historical and cultural perspectives on love, sex and relationships and then progesses through to very detailed observations and ideas for enhanced contemporary sexuality. It combines age old ideas with common sense and will allow you and your partner to rediscover yourselves. She explains the benefits of monogamy and makes you look forward to exploring what an enduring, trusting relationship can really offer. It is a book that maturely treats many sexual taboos that would make your mother blush (or worse) and makes them accessible. The topics are presented in such a way that it allows couples to consider practises that they would not normally allow themselves. If you are thinking about it, you should be getting it.

5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended for every lover and would-be lover........1997-12-30

I wish I had read this book 20 years ago. It would have saved me years of confusion. I would have understood the male and female bodies -- their nuances, differerences, modes of response, etc. -- in a deeper, more profound way. The book promises to turn sex from a pastime to an art form, and it delivers on that promise. It also turns sex from a means of pleasure to an instrument of transformation, for each individual and for relationships. That, I think, is its greatest strength. Any couple who takes this book to heart will find their lovemaking -- and as a result, their health and well-being -- taken to a new level. I expect to be referring to this book for decades to come, as it seems to contain a large supply of new and exciting treasures to be discovered.

5 out of 5 stars The Perfect Remedy to the Rise and Fall of Western Sexuality.......1997-12-09

Felice Dunas has replaced the give and take, zero sum game Western approach to sexuality with a give and give approach that has withstood the test of time. Frustrated sexual partners who want to tune into the loving energy that brought them together will find their answers in this poetic yet practical book. To anyone who wants to return love to their sex life and improve their physical health as a nice perk, this book will be a welecome guide.

5 out of 5 stars The best (and only) available translation of Schiller plays.......1998-11-24

This is an awesome collection of truly outstanding translations of Schiller's drama, five plays total, including "The Robbers," "Don Carlos," "Mary Stuart," "Intrigue and Love," and "The Maid of Orleans." This whopper of a 700-page volume will allow the modern reader to see exactly why Schiller is justly ranked with Goethe as the second giant of German literature. For anyone interested in an inexplicably neglected major figure in world literature, this book is indispensable!

Book Description

The rich tapestry of medieval belief, morality, and manners, shines through this comprehensive anthology of the twenty-four major plays that bridge the dramatic worlds of medieval and Tudor England. Here are the plays that paved the way to the Renaissance and Shakespeare. In John Gassner's extensively annotated collection, the plays regain their timeless appeal and display their truly international character and influence. Medieval and Tudor Drama remains the indispensable chronicle of a dramatic heritage - the classical plays of Hrotsvitha, folk and ritual drama, the passion play, the great mortality play Everyman, the Interlude, Tudor comedies Ralph Roister Doister and Gammer Gurton's Needle, and the most famous of Tudor tragedies, Gorboduc. Mr. Gassner's introductions and notes tell a tale of excellence and evolution too easily forgotten. The texts have been modernized for today's readers and those composed in Latin have been translated into English.

Liehm's book is one of the most informative and interesting guides to post-war Italian cinema. She covers a lot of territory! --- ["Mira Liehm has known personally many of the leading figures in Italian cinema, and her work is rich in insights into their lives and working methods."---back cover] If you enjoy reading about international cinema, this is one of the most comprehensive, well illustrated, and lucid general guides to Italian cinema currently available. Don't hesitate to buy this book even if you think the material may be dated, though an updated edition including Italian films of the last 20 years would be most welcome.

For those seeking more recent Italian film criticism, Millicent Marcus' AFTER FELLINI is a must-read. Prof. Marcus (Univ. of Penn.) can be seen and/or heard on Criterion's THE LEOPARD DVD release, on the MALENA DVD, and joining director Giuseppe Tornatore for commentary on the new (2006) 2-disc edition and 3-disc "Collector's" edition of CINEMA PARADISO.

      Book Description

In "Play With Passion" Brad Johnson takes us on his real-life journey from young kid to the Super Bowl. Family, schools, teachers, coaches, teams, and friends — they all taught him the importance of having passion in life.

Brad has played many sports — basketball, baseball, and football. In fact, his first dream was to play in the NBA. Although his hours of shooting hoops in the rain didn't result in an NBA career, they reinforced the importance of commitment and focus.

This book breaks it all down and makes learning basic fire play easy. While there is nothing simple about any form of edge play, you will find learning from this book to be fun and easy. Thanks to the authors for such great research and photo's. And my subs thank you too!

5 out of 5 stars Not a Training Manual, an Introduction and Reference Book.......2006-12-13

This book grew out of Walker and Rubel's many fire play demos they have done; the tone of the writing is very much in this vein of speaking to an audience. The photographs also demonstrate things they discuss. However it is not a training manual so please do not confuse reading this book with learning how to do fire play -- it really is something you need to learn and practice over and over with someone skilled in this area (something that Walker and Rubel repeatedly state). Nor is this a book on all types of fire play, only on dry-body fire play. Read this book to learn a bit and help you decide if you should seek out an expert to learn from.

5 out of 5 stars Safety and Sensuality...does it get better than this?.......2006-12-05

Flames of Passion: Handbook of Erotic Fire Play is a concise, well documented, well photographed study in the art of playing with fire. It answers the most basic questions, as well as addressing some of the more advanced ones. It's a recipe for some wonderfully erotic play!

1 out of 5 stars Worst book in series..........2002-12-03

I'm suprised to see so many other people praising this book. I've completed 8 other RL books so far and this was far and above the worst of them all. I truely had to force myself to finish the book hoping for some kind of redemption at it's conclusion. If this book had been a short story, it would have been much better. The finaly was good, but not nearly enough to suffer through 300+ pages of borring, mindless, rambling. Compared to "Vampire of the Mists", "Knight of the Black Rose", or "I, Strahd", it's safe to say this book [was horrible].

          5 out of 5 stars mirror.......2001-12-08

This book shows a frightning yet not that deformed picture of our society. the alienation of outsiders, people different from us, the desire to take the law into our own hands. Its extream but very true. Its a fantastic book, an example for the uses of the powerfull medium called "books" wisly.

4 out of 5 stars Thrilling & Excellent plotted story.......1999-03-10

I found Carnival of Fear a bit out of place in the Ravenloft serie. You encounter less of the fearsome creatures who dwell in this Horror wolrd. But a horror book it certainly is! You keep on guessing, but the truth is always different. It keeps you occupied till the last page.

          4 out of 5 stars Very Good!.......1998-11-02

Carnival of Fear definitely beat my expectations and turns out to be a very entertaining and fun book to read. The author has a lot of talent.

          5 out of 5 stars A thrill-ride of a novel.......1998-10-14

The plot of this suspense novel is like a hall of mirrors: whenever you think you know where the plot is headed, you find out that the big picture is even bigger than you could predict. It is an amazing story, with an ending that doesn't disappoint the reader's heightened expectations.

              5 out of 5 stars Anglo-Saxon Spiritual Quest.......2007-04-25

This book really is one of those works that you have to read, whatever your path. It is like a cross between the style of Carlos Castaneda with J.R.R. Tolkien, set in the context of Anglo-Saxon Britain. Within this wonderful work of fiction is presented a detailed insight into the worldview and magick of the Anglo-Saxon sorceror, working within the web of wyrd and acting as part of the all-encompassing web of wyrd. In an age where growing dissatisfaction with the material and mundane is causing more and more people to seek spiritual meaning and a re-connection with our heritage and nature, The Way of Wyrd shines out as a beacon on a distant hill, calling us through the mists to re-awaken our spirits.

              5 out of 5 stars Weaving a web of socio-politco-religious wyrdness.......2004-07-15

This is a story that is supposedly based on ancient manuscripts. If you're interested in this book from a historical perspective, forget it. It's not for you. For those that are looking for something that combines history, sci-fi and adventure with socio-politico-religious overtones, it will be right up your alley. That is, IF you have an open mind, can separate fact from fiction and understand that one can still respect various points of view even if they don't agree with them.

Brian Bates tells the tale of a young Anglican scribe that is sent into the Norse countries to act as a spy for the Anglican church. His mission is to learn and record as much as he can about those living in the area. With this information and a better understanding of local traditions and their ritual beliefs, the Anglican church hopes to send in missionaries to convert the locals to a more righteous path i.e. that of the Anglican church. The only problem is that the young scribe that is sent ends up with a travelling Shaman as a guide of the region. Needless to say, the clash in beliefs and cultures makes for an interesting journey as the pair travel into different villages and encounter different situations. Most of these are situations that the sheltered monk would have never even dreamed real, let alone possible.

The end result is an interesting look at how organized religion and pagan beliefs & rituals compare as seen through the eyes of the Anglican monk. There's enough input from the part of the Shaman to understand where he's coming from too, which gives the book a certain balance between "traditional church-going values" and those of a "world-loving pagan".

If you've ever wondered how two people can look at the same situation and walk away with different observations, that's what this book is all about. It teaches us to not only look at each situation in a different light from multiple points of view, but to try and see how / why the situation is as it is and what the signs were that led up to it happening. While doing all of this, the story line and writing are also good enough to make you want to keep reading. That makes this book worth seeking out and reading for yourself.

In the end, the book doesn't tell us that "religion is wrong" or that "pagans worship the devil", but leaves it up to the monk in the story and you as the reader to decide for yourself which beliefs, attitudes and ways of life are usable and / or detrimental to living a balanced life. I'm not saying that this book will change your outlook on life, but i think that it is far more powerful than being just a "story loosely based on historical facts". I would recommend it to those that seek guidance, yet are intelligent enough to think for themselves. Sean

PS... How many other pieces of written text do you know of that have inspired a rock band to write a whole album's worth of material dedicated just to that book? The disc entitled "Dreamweaver" as recorded by a band called Sabbat is a song by song version of this book set to the pounding, pulsating and twisted beat of heavy metal. The lyrics of this disc were so good and enrapturing, that i sought out this book to see just what could have influenced this band so highly. Now i know what they were excited about : )

              2 out of 5 stars A journey into loonyland.......2003-06-01

A monk is sent to England as a scount for the future process of evangelization. Eventhough their belief system is aimed toward collision, a local shaman decides to help him in his process of discovery of religious rituals and information gathering. However, the monk is surprised by how theorical are the foundations of his faith when he is shown by the shaman that he knows little of nothing about himself, so if he wants to conquer others, the monk must seek within his true nature. It is here were the novel becomes really boring, lacking any type of tension and becoming a bunch of fairy tale stories of ghosts, waking trees, ogers, and other stuff which must surely do not come from the Bristish Museum documents but from the imagination of the author.

So if you want to read fairy tale stories, the ones that offered in the children's section of the bookstore are much more fun.

              5 out of 5 stars A stunning spiritual adventure.......2002-07-23

This is an amazing book. It changed my way of thinking about myself, and my life - and it gets over its message in a story that I found compelling and moving. Based on factual documents in the British Museum, the book takes the reader on a journey into the spiritual and shamanic world of Anglo-Saxon England. It tells the story of a young man names Brand, who journeys with a sorcerer in the pre-Christian forests of the seventh century. There he learns a quite remarkable path to wisdom, called Wyrd. This is like a western version of Tao, in that every event affects everything else, and the forces of nature are pre-emenent. The story includes vivid encounters with the spirits, and a gripping conclusion where he is helped by his guardian - a hawk. Ancient wisdom for today. Deserves to be the best-seller that it is.

5 out of 5 stars The Way of Wyrd.......2000-05-26

This excellently written manuscript by Brian Bates, opens the self to the nature of mankind's human intuition and influence, now so forgotten in our busy modern times. It is well written from many perspectives, from unbeliever to faithful master, and those so intertwined within the influence of Wyrd. Each of us, as the faithful master of Wyrd says, are a part of Wyrd, and after reading this manuscript, you will begin to understand that more each day. For once Wyrd is revealed, forever will it be present, as it was then, within your own life of today.

                Book Description

Sent on a mission deep into the forests of pagan Anglo-Saxon England, Wat Brand, a Christian scribe, suddenly finds his vision of the world turned upside down. The familiar English countryside is not what it seems: threatening spirits, birds of omen and plants of power lurk in this landscape of fallen terrors and mysterious forces. With Wulf, a sorcerer and mystic, as his guide, Brand is instructed in the magical lore of plants, runes, fate and the life force until finally he journeys to the spirit world on a quest to encounter the true nature of his own soul.

4 out of 5 stars Anglo Saxons and their wyrd.......2007-04-11

Bates uses Carlos Castaneda's technique consisting of a dialogue between an all-knowing teacher and an ignorant disciple (a young Christian monk)to convey beliefs from the wild region between the Welsh and Anglo-Saxon kingdoms (~7-8th century AD). He calls these practices 'wyrd': "that which turns out, that which comes to pass". Another commonly used synonym would be 'Indra's net' denoting an interconnectedness of all action and phenomena.

For Bates, the wyrd includes supernatural experiences related to dreaming and altered states involving guidance from animals, spirits and plants. These experiences have been (according the the Introduction) snatched from old Saxon texts. Unfortunately, this programmatic element brings a certain rigidity and lack of spontaneity into the text which never develops beyond an awkward tale.

TWW lacks the humor one enjoys in Castaneda's books. The severity of the Saxon shaman Wulf cannot match the bright sparkle of don Juan's eyes, neither can the stolidity of the narrative match the mystery and unexpectedness that one finds in Castaneda.

Nonetheless, the book represents a credible attempt to broach a topic that has been neglected by scholars and fiction writers alike. The lay reader gets info on spiritual beliefs of West Saxons, Picts, Mercians, Angles and Gaels.

4 out of 5 stars Wade Me Along The Fabric Of Anglo-Saxon Mythistory..........2006-04-10

When a monastic scribe on the shores of pagan lands wakes up from a restless night of godless nightmares little does he know that he has arrived at the brink of revelation. With his faith tucked nicely under his tunic and his Lord not far behind Wat Brand is sent on a journey of discovery placed his way by the looms of wyrd - the thread that writes destinies - working through Brother Eappa.
Guided by the mystic sorcerer Wulf enlightenment becomes but a fading flicker growing dimmer like the departing ship as the guided finds his ideas and absolute service tested by the lore of the enchanting landscape and the wonders of forces he dares not fathom. At first herded like a blind man Brand slowly awakens to a new reality oozing from within as caged as a soul shackled and muted by servitude and tunnel vision.
Way Of Wyrd is the tale of Anglo-Saxon mysticism, Celtic Wicca or ancient Druidism, rolled into the parchment of fantasy and certainly consumable as a great work of fiction. On another plane The Way Of Wyrd is the reawakening of Anglo-Saxon spiritual wisdom taking its place alongside better-known traditions like Taoism or Confucianism. The book places researched history within the setting of one Christian's discovery of another truth.
As the pagan forest is penetrated deeper and deeper the Christian enemy and the wizened wizard wont their hearts of the wisdom of the life-force and allow the bearers to travel beyond the idea of monotheism and exclusion.
Could the journeyman see the divinity lying in wait for him?

I am so glad to see this book back in print. I first read it years ago and have loaned to to many folks along the way. It explores the differences AND similarities that Paganism and Christianity share. And with a little creative imagination you can draw the same parelells with other religions. The transformation of the lead character from an uptight closed minded theocrat to a person that can actually see the divine in all things is an inspiration. Well done!

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Tale.......2005-05-06

I read this book back in the 90's after a band called Sabbat wrote an album (Dreamweaver) based on the novel. My copy was getting rather tatty so it's nice to see it back in print once again. My new copy is on the way :)

The Way of Wyrd is an excellent story exploring the differences and similarities between Christianity and Paganism.

Wat Brand is sent to explore Pagan England to learn their ways ready for when Christianity invades.

However, his guide, Wulf, shows him far more than he could ever have imagined and Wat becomes submerged in the way of Wyrd. For the best way to learn of the Pagan spirits is to meet them face to face.

I reviewed a lot of smoothie recipe books before purchasing this one, based on its reviews. It has an amazing number of delicious recipes that don't require a lot of extravagant or hard-to-find ingredients, and that's important. If you can't find the ingredients in a recipe or they become too costly, you likely will not get much use out of a recipe, but that's not the case here.

There's a wonderful variety of recipes that are highly nutritious and they sound absolutely delicious too.

I recommend this book to anyone as a great introduction to smoothie making.

Recently I visited a new doctor who took my history of allergies. I've been allergic to Latex/Rubbers since 1953. So I chuckle when someone mentions the newest allergy or sensitivity fad to belong to. Anyway for years I've known to be careful about over ripe bananas but was surprised she warned me to avoid mangos at all times. It's not that these two fruits will cause a reaction alone but they seem to play a role with some people who have a latex sensitivity sort of synergistic I suppose. Anyway for those who know they are sensitive to latex be careful about the ingredients you use in your smoothies or think about it at least.
