    Book Description

This collection of interviews supplements Conversations with Walker Percy and occasions an additional two dozen pleasurable encounters with Percy. Primarily from the last ten years of Percy's life, they show how his presence was stimulating thought in much of humanistic America, in literature, linguistics, psychology, and philosophy, and in cultural life in general.

Although this acclaimed author of The Moviegoer, Lancelot, and Love in the Ruins never overcame his shyness with interviewers, he continued to grant interviews as long as his health permitted. This act of openness illustrates his humility before his ideas and his desire to help others understand them.

The interviews in this collection show him at a height when he knew that his illness would not allow him to write any more books, and that the only way to restate his ideas and offer a valediction to the large audience to whom he had always been kind, patient, and appreciative was to speak out. Percy despised the posture of many modern self-proclaimed intellectuals who delight in cloaking ideas in jargon and abstraction. He always tried to express himself clearly and as free of reservations as possible. These interviews reflect that clarity.

    Book Description

These collected interviews, like a visit with Percy at his home on the Bogue Falaya River, provide refreshing close-up encounters with one of America's most celebrated writers.

These twenty-seven interviews cover a period of twenty-two years, from the time of the publication of Percy's first novel, The Moviegoer, in 1961, until 1983, when he was interviewed about his friendship with Thomas Merton.

This volume is the second in the Literary Conversations series. These unabridged interviews, collected from a variety of sources, will give reading pleasure to general readers who wish to know Percy and his works more closely, and they will be of great use to Percy scholars.

5 out of 5 stars Deeply satisfying addition to your Walker Percy Collection.......2002-10-24

Although Percy's output was prodigious compared to some literary greats, his six novels and two major non-fiction works leave his still-growing network of fans looking for more. "Conversations with Walker Percy" meets that need. While the biographies of Percy are helpful, there's nothing quite like hearing it straight from the author in this series of interviews. I finished the volume feeling ready to tackle his novels again prepared to look for gems I'd missed the last time around.

5 out of 5 stars Essential Reading for Percy Enthusiasts.......2001-07-31

This volume (and its companion, More Conversations With Walker Percy) offers a fascinating and compelling glimpse into the mind of Walker Percy and a valuable study of the development of his literary and philosophical convictions as his career progressed. Though Percy's funny satirical piece "Questions They Never Asked Me" would seem to indicate that he found interviews dull and repetitive, the best pieces here clearly demonstrate the pleasure he took in discussing his ideas with an interested, engaged interviewer.

Brookner is an outstanding novelist whose special power is in precise psychological description of complicated characters uncertain situations. In this work however the major character Perry is so tepid and faltering that it is difficult to feel strong interest in his story. All the detail provides intelligent insight, but does not matter much when the character written about is not one that draws heart and mind.

5 out of 5 stars THE WORLD ACCORDING TO LEWIS.......2003-01-23

Set in England in the late 1950's, Lewis Percy is a book one will never forget. When we first meet the protagonist of our story, Lewis Percy is a student of literature in Paris. He enjoys the company of an odd assortment of women in the boarding house in which he stays. Having grown up without the advantages of a father figure, he grew to admire women very much, obviously as a result from his deep attachment to his mother and her loyal, quiet encouragements. When she passes away he is lost in the world and his transformation from careless student to grieving man is a process for which he is not ready and has no tools. He has lived the isolated life of a man deep in study and high moral values. The usual enjoyments of young men his age did not cross his path and if they did he would not have known how to partake of them.

He is deep in depression when he comes across an agoraphobic young lady whom he decides he will save from her disablity while she saves him from his loneliness. His marriage to her gets off to a good start but soon lives up to it's innate destiny - he feels more lonely and she is again afraid to leave home. They divorce but she is never quite out of his heart. When he discovers she is about to have a child, he lives for his nightly visits to her, when he is begrudgingly allowed to read a bedtime story to his child.

Thus his life goes on with the routine of now working in a library and the one happiness he has of visiting his child. Until a surprising person comes his way and wakes up a passion long dormant in this thoughtful young man.

The book examines the internal dialogues of this man who is at once lonely but at the same time sees a potential for joy in the world. His only problem is that he doesn't quite know how to fit in and enjoy life like others seem to be able to do so freely. For this reason, one could admit that there is a little bit of Lewis Percy in all of us. Thus, he becomes such a compelling character and we find ourselves rooting for him up until the end.

The book is a bit hard to get into at first, but if one sticks with it one will find it a rewarding experience and this character will remain with you for a long time ever after.

Science fiction and fantasy have antiheros aplenty. Think Thomas Covenant, Frankenstein's monster, or Alex from A Clockwork Orange. Add Gaetan "Don't Call Me Gae" du Cheyne, the protagonist of Acts of Conscience, to the list. Gaetan is an ordinary, self-involved, maybe-misogynistic orbital mechanic. He drinks, obsesses about women (as objects of his impotent lust), and irritates people. But oh, how realistic Gaetan is--a masterful characterization by William Barton. In fact, Gaetan's thoughts are almost too human and scattered, and Barton relies on ellipses rather heavily ... when writing what's going on in Gaetan's head.

When Gaetan's forgotten investments turn him into the sole owner of a faster-than-light spaceship, he flees his pathetic life and heads to planet Green Heaven to seek out the adventure and excitement he's craved. Instead, his journey reveals only the intergalactic depredations of men just like himself--brutal rapes, senseless killing, eradication of cultures and ecologies. He also discovers an ancient alien civilization contemplating the eradication of humanity. What's an honest antihero to do?

3 out of 5 stars Difficult, but good.......2004-04-15

I was impressed with When Heaven Fell, although the brutality in it, while not gratuitous, isn't easy to read. I appreciate the story line and characterization in Acts of Conscience, but there is even more brutality and cruelty than the other Barton book I've read. Again, it's not gratuitous, but I find it a bit painful to get through. Since it's not a film, it's less painful that watching Henry, Portrait of a Serial Killer or Reservoir Dogs, but you get the idea.

What kept me reading was Barton's plot and his genuinely likeable, if flawed, protagonist. Acts of Conscience describes the book beautifully. This isn't space opera, and although the protagonist is somewhat of a prisoner of his hormones, it isn't one of those teenage boy fantasy-type scifi novels, with lots of pointless sex that's incidental to the plot. Barton's book will actually make you think seriously about what it means to do the right thing. How often can one say this of a science fiction novel? If you can get through the ugly scenes, I recommend it. However, I wouldn't require it of any of my students.

4 out of 5 stars The filth and the fury.......2002-09-24

Born loser Gaetan du Cheyne wakes up one day and discovers that he's the owner of an experimental faster-than-light spaceship. He leaves his dead-end job for a tour of known space, visiting the alien worlds he has dreamt of ever since childhood. But things aren't rosy in our galactic neighborhood. Everywhere he goes he sees how mankind has enslaved and cruelly exploited every sentient species it has encountered. On the human-colonized planet of Green Heaven the situation is particularly bad. But wait! The Kapellmeisters, an ancient and powerful star-traveling race, have been observing our atrocities and are debating whether or not the cancer that is homo sapiens should join the company of the dodo and the Tasmanian tiger. They've got just the superweapon for the job, too. Meanwhile, on Green Heaven, Gaetan saves a slumming Kapellmeister from being killed by xenophobic street thugs and slowly realizes that he may be the only thing standing between humanity and extinction.

Typical skiffy hokum, right? Wrong. This book has something to say and it isn't polite about it. The picture that Barton paints of human nature and, more importantly, (male) human sexuality is NOT a flattering one. Looking at it will do you a power of good, though. And Gaetan, although not a very pleasant sort of chap, is as complex and contradictory a person as any I've encountered in more 'respectable' literature.

So. Four stars. A gritty, thought-provoking book only let down by a somewhat subdued ending.

                  4 out of 5 stars WOW.......2000-12-12

I am sitting at my desk with my just finished copy of William Barton's Acts OF Conscience. After completing my first Barton book and I walked from my reading chair to my computer to buy any book I could find from him, been a long time since I have done that!

First let me say that I have read a lot of science fiction (a lot of science fiction) and many of the problems that I see brought up by the reviewers here plague science fiction as a whole, poor characters, overt sexuality, plot holes, on and on. To me the idea of science fiction is not to create high art such as Shakespeare or Hemingway but to ask the question "what if". I have seen this question raised by so many poor sci-fi authors again and again, mediocre stories with no point or plot. Acts of Conscience asks "what if" we can get through the next 600 years without imploding?? Will we still face the same problems as individuals? As a society? Will we still have the same flaws and shortcomings, and the same dreams? This is a dirty, gritty, dark, depressing and thought provoking spin on "what if". It is a great look at ourselves and the problems we are facing now.

Just as Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451of the 50's, Heinlein with Starship Troopers in the 60's or David Brin's Earth of the early 90's Acts of Conscience looks at where we are now as a race. Is acts of conscience as groundbreaking as the above mentioned classics you ask?? No, it is not that good. But I feel that Barton is heading in the right direction, one of his books someday may be of that caliber.

When I wish to read high art I will read Shakespeare or Hemingway not Barton. When I wish to read Good Science Fiction I will definitely include Barton on my list.

4 out of 5 stars Shallow readers are too easily offended........1999-12-21

Though many are 'shocked' at Barton's sexual content and the somewhat unflattering personality of the lead character, any reader who has actually experienced the real world will have to appreciate the stark realism of Barton's portrayal of the human mind. We are not a warm and fuzzy species and no amount of wishing and dreaming changes this fact. Yin and Yang sums it up nicely. Keep up the good work William!

5 out of 5 stars VERY FINE SCIENCE FICTION.......1999-12-15

ACTS OF CONSCIENCE by William Barton is another great novel by this writer, and I have read several of his, and he pulls no punches in his themes and styles. He is definitely my favorite science fiction author, easily surpassing 'greats' such as A.C. Clarke and his outdated space operas. Barton's novels dwell on the human condition and sexuality is not shortchanged or covered up or glossed over, as with most other authors. My favorite saying is: THE UNIVERSE DOES'NT CARE WHAT YOU THINK" seems to me to be a strong undercurrent in Barton's novels {and in ones he co-authors}. Don't read this book if ideas contrary to what you may have grown up with may offend you!

                  Book Description

AN INSPIRATIONAL MEDITATION ON THE POWER OF CONSCIENCE—HOW A SIMPLE ACT, A MOMENT OF PURPOSE, CAN CHANGE YOUR LIFE, YOUR COMMUNITY, EVEN THE WORLD

We all struggle at times to know what to do to seek and abide our conscience—when right and wrong are not black and white, when heart and head speak with different voices, when our intentions and interests are not aligned. If you believe that the outcome of these struggles affects the course of your life, and the lives around you, then this book is for you.
If you believe that there are times and places when the choice an individual makes to speak or be silent, to eat or fast, to remain seated or to stand up in a crowd, to stare and remember or to walk on by and forget, can be as powerful as a president’s command, a congressional appropriation, or a military incursion, then this book is for you.

This book is for you if your profession is rewarding financially but not spiritually, or if you’re ever worried that your career and conscience conflict.

This book is for you if you are a parent whose love of your children never wavers with the anxiety they cause you but sometimes leaves you wondering whether they will grow up to do the right thing even if no one is watching.

This book is for you if you question whether the countless small decisions you make each day add up to a larger judgment about your life’s meaning.

Finally, this book is for you if you believe that quiet, often solitary acts of conscience have echoes louder than the original sound; that individual acts have the potential to trigger large public consequences and continue to inspire others from generation to generation; that such acts bring rewards to the individual, that unforeseen benefits accrue, that one gains more than was sacrificed, and that there is a transformative power and richness to a life so lived.

5 out of 5 stars The Rippling Effects Will Be Profound. 10 Stars!.......2004-04-09

The brilliant words of Bill Shore will have a far greater rippling effect among humanity for all who heed his profound insight, sharing and understanding that one single brave, caring, generous, and heartfelt act can bring.
This epic book is a beacon for the simple yet profound acts of generosity and courage no matter how large or small, and how they can change the course of humanity forever.
One of my favorite examples was the brave woman Rosa Parks who refused to give up her seat during the segregated times of the 1960's, and how that one act was the catalyst for equality for people of all color and creed in the USA.
One donation can help someone become a doctor who winds up saving YOUR life. `The Light of Conscious' should be required reading in all schools, in all lands, to teach by the examples Bill Shore provided how one simple act CAN make a difference for our entire world. An absolute MUST Read. Profound!

5 out of 5 stars Living (even for a moment) What You Believe.......2004-03-13

Bill Shore uses stories from his life, as well as from the famous and not so famous, as a backdrop to his message. A childless cleaning woman from Mississippi works her entire life and saves $150k which she donates to the University of Southern Mississippi so someone like her has the chance to go to college. This huge act on her part inspires those who have significantly more to act. The simple actions of Rosa Parks in refusing to move from her seat on the bus and Pee Wee Reese in publicly putting a hand of support on Jackie Robinson's shoulder had large impacts on the world. Shore weaves his message about the value of trying to line up our actions with our beliefs amidst this backdrop of stories that show how fallible we all can be. Highly recommended. Not an academic tome, but a pleasurable read.

You may want to put all your other cookbooks on waivers for a while and simply settle in to Simply Ming by Ming Tsai and Arthur Boehm. Tsai's the chef and owner of Blue Ginger in Wellesley, Massachusetts, and the host of Food Network's East Meets West. This particular book ties in with a show of the same title he's doing for public television.

Tsai has cut a wide swath through the food world with his creative blending of Eastern flavors and techniques with Western ingredients and presentations. Consider Asian Pesto Turkey Spaghetti, for example. This is Tsai-style spaghetti Bolognese, and it demonstrates the structure of the book. First comes the master recipe for Asian Pesto. Instead of basil, garlic, pine nuts, olive oil, and ground Romano--your classic pesto--Tsai calls for jalapeno chilies, garlic, sugar, ginger, macadamia nuts or salted peanuts, lemon zest, mint leaves, cilantro, salt and pepper, and basil and olive oil. For the Turkey Spaghetti you'll use ground turkey, red onion, button mushrooms, and white wine, as well as the Asian Pesto. In this particular chapter you'll also find recipes for Asian Pesto Chicken Salad, and Grilled Asian Pesto Shrimp and Radicchio.

This is a book about assembling major flavor statements ahead of time and storing them in the refrigerator. The actual cooking becomes a relatively rapid process while delivering maximum flavor. The sections in Simply Ming include Flavored Oils and Sauces; Sambals, Salsas, Chutneys, and Pastes; Dressings, Dipping Sauces, and Marinades: Syrups; Broths; Rubs and Coatings; Doughs and Desserts.

It's fast. It's flavorful. It's from both sides of the world. --Schuyler Ingle

                                  Book Description

As the chef and owner of the acclaimed Blue Ginger restaurant in Wellesley, Massachusetts, and an Emmy award-winning television personality, Ming Tsai has become the standard-bearer of East-West cuisine, the innovative blending of Eastern flavors and techniques with Western ingredients and presentations.

Now, in Simply Ming, he presents a breakthrough technique for bringing East-West flair to everyday cooking, making it possible to transform a handful of fresh ingredients into a delicious meal in a matter of minutes. The genius of Simply Ming is a versatile array of master recipes—intensely flavored sauces, pestos, salsas, dressings, rubs, and more that eliminate much of the last-minute prep work. So sophisticated dishes such as Tea-Rubbed Salmon with Steamed Scallion-Lemon Rice, Grilled Miso-Citrus Scallop Lollipops, and Green Peppercorn Beef Tenderloin with Vinegar-Glazed Leeks can be on the table in less than 30 minutes.

Even casual dishes such as spaghetti, burgers, fried calamari, and chicken wings get a boost of East-West excitement in Ming’s creative hands, becoming Asian Pesto Turkey Spaghetti, Salmon Burger with Tomato-Kaffir Lime Salsa, Blue Ginger Crispy Calamari, and Soy-Dijon Chicken Wings. This is food that is simple enough to serve on a weeknight, but special enough to share with guests. And desserts get the Simply Ming treatment, too, with tempting ways to transform basic shortbread dough, chocolate ganache, and crème anglaise into a range of show-stopping finales.

Filled with color photographs that motivate and inspire, beverage suggestions to complement each dish, and helpful tips for cooking with unfamiliar ingredients, Simply Ming makes the excitement and innovation of East-West cooking easily accessible to all home cooks.

4 out of 5 stars Practical Fun Cooking Resource.......2007-08-30

I bought this cookbook as a present for my fiance, and I was very happy with the style and clarity. I also approve of the "prepare it in advance" method which underlies this volume. Each section highlights a range of sauces, condiments, spices and rubs which can be used on the menu items demonstrated, or to spice up your own personal cooking. Because you can prepare so many different dishes with one or two pre-prepared sauces, this book is great for singles or small families who don't like to slave over the stove every night.

The final star missing is because, as much as the book is good, he harps on seafood (particularly scallops) which is limiting, and he is uneven in his suggestions of substituting for rare or expensive menu items. With a little creativity, I'm sure we can figure it out, but he does list substitutions for some - just not many of his recipes.

Overall, quite good, and much more accessible and direct than the earlier "Blue Ginger" cookbook, which I did NOT buy, as it was incomprehensible and the directions were badly flawed.

The flavors in the recipes are fabulous. I have served the spicy mango salsa with chicken satays and seared scallops, both to rave reviews. This is one of my favorite recipe books.

I think I use this book a bit different than many in that I see this as a great everyday cookbook. The great advantage of this cookbook is that you can make 2 or 3 of the master recipes on the weekend and then dinner preparation for the rest of the week is very easy. I try to make sure that I have a couple master recipes that have very different tastes on hand to work as a nice counterpoint. For example, I have the apple chutney and curry paste on hand now. This gives me something strong and spicy for some recipes and something sweeter to use as a counterpoint. With only a few exceptions, most of these recipes are only a few steps and hardly ever more than 5 ingredients once the master recipe is done. I should also say that the master recipes are generally quite easy.

Now that I've covered the convenience, the taste on these recipes is absolutely wonderful. I've probably now prepared about half of the master recipes and generally made 2 dishes from each master recipe and they have all been wonderful. Some favorites: the asian lamb gyros were wonderful, the chili-ginger oil chicken and zucchini stir-fry was very easy and very good, Ming's take on Coq Au Vin was amazing. I just can't recommend this book enough. I've been cooking with it non-stop for the last month and it's made everything easier and more delicious. There's no higher praise than that.

Recipes were very quick and easy to prepare. The master sauces can go with more recipes than in the book.

What a wonderful cookbook that goes beyond what we usually see and makes Asian cooking accessible to the american home.

The style, layout, and content are exquisite. An improvement over his last book Blue Ginger, which although interesting, I found many of the recipes daunting. These are easy to follow with readily aquireable ingredients. The use of rubs and sauces that can be made easily or purchased are great additions to make meals appetizing and quickly prepared.

The book presentation is a wonderful read with helpful hints and comments on wine accompaniments and little nuances to the recipes.

I look forward to the next one....
