Tokyopop's Translation Is Quite Good.......2007-05-17

This ongoing manga series (currently at 7 volumes) has a historical (Taisho-period) Japanese setting. Humor, magic, and mild drama ensue in this loveable series.

The Tokyopop translation is quite good, with helpful notes and everything, in stark contrast to ADV's attempt.

The main character, Kantarou, is a clever and mischevious writer and folklorist who can see youkai and other magical creatures. Haruka is an extremely powerful (and handsome) tengu who has been named by Kantarou, and is therefore required to obey him.

The art style is quite lovely here, and the characters are really fun. There is also an associated anime series.

Inaccurate translation ruins an otherwise outstanding manga..........2005-08-28

Tactics is a very entertaining manga series with well-developed characters and interesting storylines. Unfortunately, ADV's translation of this volume leaves much to be desired. The main problem is that they made a serious error in changing the sex of two of the main characters, sending Tactics fans everywhere into an uproar. There is no excuse for a mistake of this magnitude, so I can only assume that ADV must have done it intentionally, perhaps because one of the characters is a bit androgynous looking.

I have all of the original Japanese volumes of Tactics and was looking forward to buying the English translation as well, but I can't support a company that makes such serious translation errors. Nor a company that so blatantly ignores and looks down on its fanbase by assuming that no one would notice such an error.

Poorly translated.......2005-06-02

This is probably one of the worst translating errors I've seen in a while. Whether is was an accident or intentional, I'm not sure.

Two of the reoccuring characters are switched to the other gender. Sugino, the white tengu, is very male, however ADV made Sugino female. Muu is generally considered to be female, most of the characters refer to her as such, but ADV made Muu male.

I'm incredibly disappointed and will more than likely buy the original rather than giving ADV my money for a piece of work that doesn't deserve it. I'm very fond of this series and these characters, and am greatly appalled at this massacre of it.

Adorable art and characters........2005-02-15

Tactics chronicles the ghost-busting adventures of Kantarou and his goblin friends. Volume 1 offers 3 seperate stories, in which we're introduced to all the major characters: the sly, youthful-looking Kantarou, Youko--the foxy maid, and Haruka, an extremely powerful, handsome, and elegant "goblin-eater".

I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this manga. There's a cheerfulness and cuteness about the art and characters that is extremely engaging. The target audience is probably 10-16 year-olds; I am past this age bracket, being a university senior, but that didn't stop me from liking the series. Fans of the Tactics anime should definitely check out the original manga.

Okay, now for the bad. There is something seriously screwed up about ADV's editing: text-over-images have not been edited at all, nor the sound effects. The result is rather messy: there will be one bubble in Japanese, and another bubble in English. I don't see the same things happening in my TokyoPop, Viz, or Darkhorse mangas, so I've got to wonder what ADV was thinking.

James Bond watch out, this perfumer for CRI Cosmetics has more skills and talents than just having a good nose. Najica is a special operative who travels about the world attacking evildoers and saving important people. Her partner, Lila, is in fact a Humaritt, a kind of robot. Together they get into some serious trouble but always seem to get out again.
The first book starts some time after the first anime episode, where Najica rescues Lila, but well before the end of the series. Lila is still trying to act like a normal girl, with mixed results.
The skirts ARE shorter, the busts bigger and the stories are fast flowing (no need for fillers in a manga). Rated for 16 and up, but I bet younger readers could handle it.

Another great read.......2000-05-22

I really liked this book. I mean really liked this book. As usually Mr. Dietz has done it again. Although I'm more into sci-fi stuff, since this was Mr. Dietz, I had to read it. This murder mystery in space story was good, he tied a couple of other things together to stear you away from the bad guy, but the ending was great. The whole camera in your head thing was good. Again with the interesting characters and strong female parts, defenetly an enjoyable read. Mr. Dietz knows how to blend mystery, suspense, military sci-fi, and drama into one GREAT package.

Time Consuming but Worth It.......2007-08-07

I have never made any type of cake like this before and decided to try it after looking at this book. I made the fairy toadstool cake which you can see on the back cover (and my picture above). I guess this was my "neurotic mom" birthday project! I was planning an enchanted woodland fairy party for my daughter's 4th birthday and couldn't find any other cakes that I liked. I found that I needed a lot of tools and materials before I could start, so the preparation took some time. All of the instructions were very clear though and I just followed them step by step. It took me a few nights to finish it and everyone was really impressed. The cake itself did not taste that great but I just added ice cream and everyone was happy.

This was a super cute book with tons of adorable ideas! My daughter and neice absolutely loved the cakes I made for them from this book! I get a lot of other great ideas from Vondre and Andreaetta at Sell Cakes Like Crazy on the Internet!

This book has loads of great ideas for beautiful birthday cakes. I haven't tried making one yet so I don't know if they're easy. But I will surely be using one of the ideas for my 2 year olds up and coming birthday.

I am a fan of all of Debbie Brown's books because she does amazing work with fondant. The original designs are always crowd pleasers and images you can actualy recreate when you follow her instructions. Please keep your books coming Debbie.

Great ideas!.......2007-03-28

When I reviewed this book with my niece she told me she wanted me to make ALL of them for her birthday...The ideas are great! The only thing I didn't care for is the madeira cake recipe in the book. Too dry and heavy for my taste but a sponge cake recipe will do. All in all a great book with great step by step instructions.
