Book Description
Matters of Chance is a glorious, aptivating novel about Morgan and Maude Shurtliff, who fall in love and marry in the years before World War II. Unable to have children of their own, Morgan and Maude adopt twin girls. The four go home to their beautiful house in the country outside of New York City and begin to settle into what they hope will be a long and happy life. When the twins are still young, Morgan is called to serve in World War II, leaving Maude to raise her daughters alone. Jeannette Haien has rendered Morgan's war experiences with astonishing detail, just as she has captured the American post-war era with a precision that is unrivaled in recent fiction.
Customer Reviews:
Perfectly Boring!.......2001-07-16
I agree with a couple of the previous reviews. This book was just packed with perfect people who always have perfect, politically correct, supportive reactions to EVERYTHING that is thrown their way. It is so boring because it is so predictable. Every character will always do the best possible thing. I could not connect with any of them. They seemed inhuman and unrealistic. I read Haien's The All of It and enjoyed that short novel, but Matters of Chance has nothing to recommend.
Extraordinary, eloquent, poignant, a must read........1999-09-26
My only words to describe my experience was to a dear friend who also read this extraordinary novel and my words were "Okay, now what do I do". It left me feeling as if any other book I would read would pale in comparison.
A disappointment.......1999-01-19
My book club read Haien's THE ALL OF IT and loved it. I was looking forward to another excellent book, but I was very disappointed. I didn't connect with any of the characters and I especially didn't care for the wartime descriptions; they didn't seem realistic. The twins were not characterized well; I didn't feel I knew them. Too much time passed, too quickly for any real feelings to develop. I have to admit I just skimmed the last half of the book to see what the big mystery re: the twins was. And that was anticlimatic. I liked the first novel so much better. It hardly seems to be the same author.
Matters of Chance would make a good tv movie of the week........1998-07-02
This book had an excellent beginning, filled with promise but quickly devolved into predictability. Most affecting section was the main character's wartime experiences. There was some expectation that, once home, some dramatic conflict would start, since he was changed by his wartime exploits. Instead, we are subjected to a relentless onslought of perfect people who always do the right, noble thing. Bits of historic arcana are sprinkled in for some odd reason -- perhaps to remind us that there is a real world out there. Subjects such as homosexuality, adoption, adultery are all reacted to with grace and equanimity. Isn't pretty to think so. I don't have a problem with noble and uplifting characters -- but there has to some bad guys, if for no other reason than texture!
wonderfully written story of a man's life and lovesOf.......1998-05-10
Of the many new books I have read recently, I enjoyed this one the most. Ms. Haien writes well and captures the sincerity and decentness of her main character Morgan. His love for his wife and adopted daughters and the progression of his life through many stages lead the reader through every page. The veiled nature of the older woman whom he befriends lends a richness to the story and the plot twist near the end is unexpected. I have not read others of Ms. Haien's work, but I expect to as a result of the pleasure I received from this work.smh

Full of surprises, enjoyable trip through Rennaisance Spain.......1999-05-10
I had not read about Toby Longdirk for years, and it was only when I was about halfway through Demon Rider that I begin to recall having read Demon Sword quite a few years ago. Demon Rider was the right length, and the plot twists were excellent. There is a little problem with the time travelling mechanism used by the hob, but it appears to have been the only way Mr. Hood could comment on the horrors of the Inquisition from a surviving victim's point of view. His adaptation of Don Quixote into a living character in the book is marvelous. The necessity of including the Inquisition in a book where the fundamental belief in CHristian Faith is not a given posed some real obstacles, however I am impressed with how Mr Hood pulled it off. There is sufficient humor to go with the swords and sorcery to make this book a very enjoyable read. It fits into alternate history nicely, providing a very human protagonist. The metahporical dealing with inner demons is well resolved by the example of selflessness. Perhaps a lesson more people in the modern world coud use. Suitable for mature teens.

A FAMILY REUNION.......2003-05-01
Robert (Dick) Vaughn is a fabulous writer. All of his books are continually encouraging you to keep reading page after page, there is never a dull moment. The story has something happening at every sentence. He does describe the trees, sky, mountains, people and events but he does it in such a way that keeps you so interested you just can not stop reading. Parker Stanley one of the main characters survives a family massacre by the cheyennes. He takes the money his father had hidden in the wagon. He meets up with Clay Springer who is taking 3 loads of much needed supplies to the Mormans in Utah. The two of them become partners and head out. On the way they encounter attacks by white men and by Indians. Another serious attack by the harsh conditions of snow and boiling desert. A non-stop exciting story.
WESTERN ACTION AND ADVENTURE AT IT'S BEST-A MUST READ!!!.......2002-04-23
DEAMON'S PASS is another exciting action filled western by Dick Vaughn, who is keeping the tradition alive started by Ralph Compton. Along the road to a new life the Stanley family is attacked by a band of Cheyenne. Parker Stanley is all alone after the attack and the Cheyenne take his sister captive. Along comes Clay Springer to the rescue. Clay recruits Marcus Pearson to join him and Parker in taking a wagon load of supplies to the Morman's at Salt Lake City. Vaughn's DEMON'S PASS is in the tradition of L'Amour and will have you turning pages as you follow both Parker's adventures and those of his sister Elizabeth. DEAMON'S PASS is a book you will want to read and not put down.
Death Rides a Chestnut Mare.......2000-08-30
I arbitrarily picked this book from a library shelf. It was refreshingly different, and it was reminiscent of L''Amour.Compton keeps your interest up throughout. His stories are varied and interesting. Lastly I like the use he makes of the historical background. Thus far I have purchased and read eighteen of his novels. They are not predictable, even though the themes sometimes parallel. Good western author!

Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03
A hero is ill, and despite all their power, the rest of the Marvel universe can do nothing to stop Mar-Vell from dying from cancer.
They all come to pay their respect to the brave warrior, including his archenmey, Thanos. This is really well done. So well done, in fact, that this is one character that has stayed dead.
Jim Starlin, genio cosmico e drammatico.......2007-07-16
The Life and Death of Captain Marvel.......2007-02-18
I REMEMBER JUST LIKE IT WAS YESTERDAY WHEN I BOUGHT "THE DEATH OF CAPTAIN MARVEL" IN THE SUMMER OF 1984. THIS BOOK HAD BEEN OUT FOR 3 YEARS AND IT WAS IN ITS SIXTH PRINTING. THIS ALONE IS A TESTAMENT TO HOW GROUNDBREAKING AND, DARE I SAY IT, IMPORTANT THIS WAS TO COMICS STORYTELLING AND TO THE INDUSTRY ITSELF. THIS BOOK WAS IMPORTANT TO ME BECAUSE THIS WAS THE FIRST COMIC BOOK STORY THAT I ACTUALLY READ FROM COVER TO COVER AND WHEN I BOUGHT THIS I WAS A RISING SENIOR IN HIGH SCHOOL AND HAD NO IDEA WHAT I WAS GOING TO DO AFTER GRADUATION BUT THIS BOOK INSPIRED ME TO WRITE COMICS AFTER I WAS TOLD BY A RELATIVE WHEN I WANTED TO PURSUE A CAREER AS A COMIC BOOK ARTIST, THAT NO ONE WOULD APPRECIATE MY ART UNTIL I WAS DEAD(I SHOULD HAVE KNOWN BETTER BUT I WAS 17 AT THE TIME).I HAD READ A REVIEW STATING HOW DEPRESSING OR MORBID THE DEATH OF CAPTAIN MARVEL STORY WAS. IT WAS THAT WAY FOR A REASON. THIS WAS STARLIN'S MOST PERSONAL WORK BECAUSE HE BASED THIS STORY ON HIS FATHER'S STRUGGLE AND EVENTUAL DEATH AS A RESULT OF CANCER.
WHEN YOU READ THIS STORY,YOU CAN FEEL MAR-VELL'S PAIN AS HE HAS TO COME TO GRIPS WITH THE FACT THAT HE IS GOING TO DIE AND THE WORLD IS GOING TO GO ON WITHOUT HIM. THERE IS ONE POINT IN THE STORY WHERE HE IS MAKING SOME TAPES ABOUT HIS LIFE AND DURING THE RECORDING HE IS STRICKEN WITH A PAIN THAT USUALLY A CANCER PATIENT ENDURES AND AFTER THE PAIN SUBSIDES, MAR-VELL, WITH ONE SWING, DESTROYS THE MACHINE HE IS USING TO MAKE THESE RECORDINGS AND YELLS OUT "DAMN". IN THE FOLLOWING PANELS YOU SEE AND FEEL HIS FRUSTRATIONS WITH THE DISEASE AND BEING TERMINALLY ILL AS HE SAYS "ALIEN INVADERS,SUPER-VILLIANS,MONSTERS,MUTANTS, THEY HAVE ALL TRIED, BUT NONE OF THEM COULD KILL ME. I FOUGHT THEM ALL AND I WON! I SURVIVED. WHO WOULD HAVE THOUGHT THAT, IN THE END... THAT IT WOULD BE MY OWN BODY THAT WOULD TURN ON ME AND DO ME IN." HE THEN LAMENTS AFTER REGAINING HIS COMPOSURE. " BUT WHAT ARE YOU CARRYING ON SO ABOUT, MAR-VELL? IT'S NOT AS YOU'VE BEEN SINGLED OUT FOR THIS. EVERYONE HAS TO DIE SOMEDAY. OR DID YOU THINK YOU WERE UNIQUE? YES, I GUESS THAT'S WHAT IT'S ALL ABOUT. I JUST NEVER FIGURED IT THAT IT WOULD HAPPEN TO ME. DEEP DOWN INSIDE OF ME I FELT THAT THOSE SPECIAL THINGS THAT MAKE ME WHO I AM WOULD JUST LET ME LIVE FOREVER. IT'S HARD TO ACCEPT THAT THE WORLD IS GOING TO GO ON WITHOUT ME. DAMN."
THERE IS ANOTHER PART OF THE STORY WHERE SPIDER-MAN IS SO OVERCOME WITH EVERYTHING THAT IS GOING ON WHEN VARIOUS MEMBERS OF THE MARVEL UNIVERSE GO TO THE PLANET TITAN TO VISIT THE STRICKEN HERO THAT HE HAS TO LEAVE MAR-VELL'S ROOM WHEN HE IS FOLLOWED BY THE BEAST WHO PUTS LIFE IN A VERY UNIQUE PRESPECTIVE WHEN HE TELLS SPIDEY " IN CASE YOU HAVEN'T NOTICED, BENEATH THESE FANCY COSTUMES AND FLASHY POWERS HIDE MORTAL MEN AND WOMEN. NONE OF US HAVE MUCH OF A SAY ON HOW WERE GOING TO END THIS LIFE."
THE PRECEEDING STORIES IN THIS COLLECTION ARE FROM THE MINI SERIES "THE LIFE OF CAPTAIN MARVEL" AND FEATURES THE PIVOTAL STORY WHICH COULD BE CONSIDERED THE PROLOGUE TO "THE DEATH OF CAPTAIN MARVEL" WHICH IS MAR-VELL'S BATTLE WITH THE VILLIAN NITRO THAT LEADS TO THE EXPOSURE TO THE NERVE GAS WHICH IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE CANCER THAT WILL TAKE HIS LIFE.
THIS BOOK IS A MUST READ. I SAY THAT NOW BECAUSE IF THOSE READING THIS DO NOT KNOW, CAPTAIN MARVEL HAS BEEN BROUGHT BACK AS PART OF MARVEL COMICS MINI-SERIES, "CIVIL WAR". HE MAKES HIS RETURN IN THE ONE-SHOT CALLED "CIVIL WAR: THE RETURN" WHERE IT EXPLAINS HOW HE WAS BROUGHT FROM THE PAST INTO THE PRESENT, SOME 25-26 YEARS AFTER HIS DEATH. AND TO MAKE THINGS MORE COMPLICATED, HE KNOWS HE IS GOING TO DIE AND REALIZES THAT HE IS LIVING ON BORROWED TIME. BUT BEING THE TRUE HERO AND WARRIOR THAT HE IS, MARV-VELL PRESSES ON.
I WOULD SUGGEST THIS BOOK TO ANYONE WHO HAS DEALT WITH A LOVED ONE WHO IS TERMINALLY ILL, SOMEONE WHO IS LOOKING FOR A REASON TO APPRECIATE THEIR OWN LIVES AND THE TIME YOU HAVE OR SOMEONE LOOKING FOR A GREAT COMIC BOOK STORY. FOR THERE HAS NOT BEEN ANOTHER STORY SINCE THAT CAN MEASURE UP TO BEING, IN MY OPINION, THE MOST REALISTIC COMIC STORY EVER WRITTEN.
The best cosmic comic story ever! .......2007-02-04
I grew up reading this adventure back in the '70's. Mar-Vell was always one of my favorite characters, and his death in the early '80's was a sad moment for fans of the hero. But Jim Starlin proved himself here in these pages as being one of the greatest comic creators ever. His re-creation of Mar-Vell from soldier and warrior to the Protector of the Universe Entire was nothing short of incredible! The entire Thanos battle has never been surpassed by anyone since. It is perhaps the greatest comics story ever written and drawn. Let alone that Starlins artwork is by far and away quite possibly the best that has ever graced the four color medium. What passes for most comic artwork today is a joke compared to the fine lines and sweeping curves of Starlin at his best. This heros adventures have become classics, and even the many that followed Starlins exit from the magazine would be great to see in this format. This is comic storytelling at its best. Highest recomendation possible!
Son of the Kree Empire- Champion of the Universe.......2005-04-05
Unlike Superman, there was no miraculous return from the grave for Captain Marvel. Nor did Marvel die a heroic death in battle while saving the universe. But then he didn't need to, for he had already fought that great battle- against Thanos, the Titan who had become God Himself, and who sought to deliver the totality of Creation unto Death Herself....
No, Captain Marvel had already fought his great battles and was enjoying the hard-won fruits of semi-retirement. He had finally found the peace, and the love, that had eluded him for so long. And then he was diagnosed with what is known on Titan as Inner Decay, and among the Kree as Blackend- and on Earth as... Cancer.
Yet, the Captain faced this last foe with courage and dignity that put the rest of the Marvel Universe to shame. Hero after hero, from Captain America to Thor, came to wonder at the dignity and nobility with which the Captain faced a foe that could not be defeated. No, Marvel wasn't tired of living- he made that abundantly clear- but when he knew his time was done he accepted it. Not only that, he made sure that the comrades and loved ones around him accepted- and learned- from his example.
Of course, in a way, Marvel was the best prepared of any of the heroes for this final journey. After all, the bombastic Captain Mar-vell, super-soldier of the mighty Kree Empire had died once before- to be reborn as Captain Marvel, the cosmically conscious warrior champion of the entire universe. This was because Mar-vell had faced death once before with pride and power and ego- and he had failed.... After that, he was taken to a place beyond space and time by the being named Eon. Under the direction of this being, created by Kronos, the Cosmic Balance, some eight billion years before, Mar-vell the soldier died, or at least his colossal pride and ego did. After facing his inner demons, he was reborn as the champion of all-things. This was possible since he was now cosmically aware and he knew that he was truly part of all-things. The Universe had crystallized out an antidote for ultimate evil in its time of need- a cosmic champion.
You don't really have to he familiar with the saga of Mar-vell to enjoy this story. It is all spelled out right here. While I know of a number of graphic stories as good as this one, I really don't know of any that are BETTER than this one.

Captain Marvel rules---.......2002-06-16
See how Mar-vell, formerly of the Kree empire, transforms himself from a soldier fighting for an ideal that no longer brings him satisfaction to the most cosmic super hero of all time. See how Mar-Vell becomes "cosmically aware" and how he solidified himself as one of the top heroes in the Marvel Universe by tackling the God of Death and Lover of Death himself, Thanos of Titan. This story is great for all of those that like a classic tale to be self contained in one book. Also included is the heart gripping talk of the Death of Captain Marvel where the heroes and greatest minds of the Marvel Universe contemplate on how they are able to create wonderful inventions to defeat the villains of the Marvel Universe yet have dedicated so little time in solving the problems of the world that do not require a clenched fist and a menace that does not care whether you are the best of us or the worst of us.I highly recommend this trade paperback.
The Life of Captain Marvel.......2000-03-31
This is where it all begins! This collection compiles the early appearance of Captain Mar-Vell in the issues of Iron Man and his early comicbook issues. Enjoy his battles with all kinds of villians (especially Thanos) and peek into the private life that he shares with his alter ego; Rick Jones (a one time partner of the Hulk and Captain America).
One of the best compilation by Marvel Comics and a gem to true blue comicbooks fans, completist and readers alike! Worth the look!

Customer Reviews:
Simple, easy, and tasty desserts that will WOW!.......2007-08-28
I am a big Sandra Lee fan. I now tape her show daily and try a lot of her recipes. I like her mainly because she caters to those of us that want great tasting food and desserts that don't take all day to make and don't have a lot of ingredients. This dessert book is really versatile, there are desserts for everyone. I have to say that the desserts that I like best are the ones that jazz up a plain old boxed cake mix, and the ones that use ice cream and frozen treats. I never imagined plain cake mix could taste so good! I have made some of these recipes for get-togethers and really WOWed people. They thought I bought the fancy cake, or ice-cream cake at a store! When I told them I made it at home they automatically assumed I slaved in the kitchen all day.
I love the pictures in the book because they give you creative ideas about what you can do-even if you don't use that specific decoration she uses.
I also like the fact that she gives so many ideas for using angel food cake. Angel food cake is easy to buy already made at the supermarket, and has no fat. For those of us trying to watch our figures (or entertaining others that are) it's a great treat. I have used these recipes in a pinch when I find out I have to make a dessert in a hurry and they've been a hit every time.
Shortcuts at their best.......2007-05-25
What a great book - haven't tried any desserts yet but have checked out some recipes and they all seem fool-proor...perfect!
Fabulous.......2007-02-22
I am certainly going to make some of these desserts as they look so simple to make. I rank it up there with "The Cake Doctor". Also the shipping time was fantastically fast.
Semi-Homemade is delicious.......2006-11-27
I bought this book and don't regret it. The paper is high quality and the photos are beautiful. I have tried some of the recipes and all have been a hit every time. Sure the list of ingredients for each recipe includes some brand name item(s) or pre-prepared food. But that is what "semi" homemade is all about. Part pre-packaged/store bought and part made from scratch. A great combination if you will try the recipes. I don't save scads of time by using these recipes but they do make delicious dishes which are different from most other dishes you will see and have all been a hit at any party I have taken them and with my family at home.
Semi-Homemade Desserts.......2006-08-04
I have tried at least 6 desserts since I bought this book - everyone has been easy and great. I have given the receipe out to at least 5 people.
