Helpful.......2007-03-12
This book is helpful if you are trying to find your style of marker rendering it has a lot of helpful information and examples.
Wonderful rendering tips!.......2006-02-01
This book was very helpful in showing me different rendering techniques used by varying artists. From minimalist, neutral shading to full blown, vibrant color renderings, this book covered them all.
Great tips on which marker colors to use to achieve a particular 'look'...such as glass, metal, wood, etc.
Highly recommend.
I absolutely love this book!.......2004-06-19
This book got me through architectural school. Hand renderings were never my strong point until I got this book. My rendering skills went up considerably (along with my confidence and grades) and I still reference this book today in my professional career. The book gives great examples and the tips from the professionals are very informative. This is definately one of the best books on how to make professional looking presentations.
Questions Answered Here.......2000-02-29
The question and answer format of this book is useful and allows a different kind of organization to its contents. It also incorporates the work of a broad cross-section of designers. This allows the editors to expose you to many of the best in different fields in which markers are used to increase the effectiveness of visual communication. While certainly useful for the beginner, it will also stimulate the more experienced designer.

overated.......2007-03-21
I found this text very frustrating. There is no instruction in technique beyond some simple perspective lessons. If you want to know how to accurately render different materials you will have to find another book. You can tell there are many more steps he uses to achieve his renderings, possibly even the use of other materials or media with his markers, but there is no information about it in his book. It is the text our professor uses for our Intro to Color Rendering class and I think there has to be something better than this!
One of the best on the subject.......2007-02-06
An excellent reference text for both the student of design and professional. Beautifully illustrated with step-by- step instructions explaining the mediums and techniques in their use to acheive maximum results!

Pat Arnold's Review of Sketching and Rendering Interior Spaces.......2007-01-11
I really feel that the book was written in easy to use format. The instructions were very clear and concise.
Okay, but text should be formatted differently.......2005-12-22
I was disappointed with this book. I felt it needed more examples from different artists, rather than just the author's work. In addition, the book uses strange font and formatting which is sometimes difficult to read. In general, the information is easy to understand, but I have found other books present the same information in more concise terms. Okay to add to a collection, but not recommended to be the main source for any interior design project.
Great book.......2003-01-16
I am a Graphic Design student in Kansas City. Finding anyone to teach you marker rendering is impossible, yet the field demands you have this talent. This book is a great start. I've looked all over for good books on this subject and they are rare. The book is in FULL color, with plenty of exercises. He also tells you the exact marker he used in each drawing, to keep u on track. And works through all perspective problems. It's inspiring just flipping through the pages. However, it still demands practice and discipline, but with this book it will help. If you've been scared of marker rendering, start with this book, it will get u on your feet.

Valuable book but it needs a revision...Pronto!.......2005-06-22
As digital imagining becomes more and more prolific, marker rendering seems to be a dying art. Thats a shame because it can be a beautiful tool for artists of all types. This book is a valuable reference tool for artists but the techniques are somewhat outdated, which is understandable seeing that the book was written in the early 80's. Another complaint is the lack of color pictures. This is a marker book! Give us color pictures! For the price it is a good deal and one of the few books on the subject but I would seek other publications to supplement this book.
Great, for its goals........2005-04-11
There are lots of times and places where you just need to make a good picture - or good enough - really fast. What you need is to create a visual idea and to convey it, right now, to those people who literally won't get it until you draw a picture for them.
Marker rendering is the established way to do it. Saying that you use "markers" is just too weak, though. This is about doing whatever works, to make a picture that lasts just long enough. There are the masks or friskets, highlights in gouache or white grease pencil, cutouts, layers of paper, and all the other media that go into a "marker" rendering. Even when you use the markers by themselves, there are endless variations of line, weight, guides (surely you've customized your triangles to lift the edge away from wet marks), color, and gray. Heck, you might have more than 20 markers even if you have only grays, warm and cool, in a dozen values, and new/juicy vs. old/dry.
This can work well as a text, with a series of graded exercises. It just can't stand by itself, though, it really needs a good teacher to go with it. You'll need someone with a trained eye for the gazillion things that go wrong, and with a back pocket full of ways to make them go right.
As far as it goes, this book is really good. If your pictures are there to convey an idea and not just to be pictures, this book is one of the student's best friends.

Needs more color.......2001-03-14
A wonderful book that includes great techinque and design. It would have been nice to view more colored images. Over half of the examples are in black and white. This feature was a slight dissapointment when I first open the book.
Breadth of content with step by step descriptions.......2001-02-03
I think this book is wonderful for anyone trying to learn rendering techniques. Even though the book is a little dated, it still communicates the principals of marker renderings. It's starts with an overview of the key factors to keep in mind when using markers: controlling the view, defining form, enhancing light, defining the main characteristics of materials and enhancing the surface. Then it goes into each of these factors explaining each of them with various examples. It also compares some of the most commonly used papers: Vellum, Bond, Marker paper, blueprint to show their marker absorption rate, degree of translucency and how the same rendering looks on each of them. It covers basic marker techniques, scrub coat technique, wet blending, masking and editing techniques, bringing forms out of backgrounds. It also touches on pastels, but only slightly. As a product designer I think this boos is a must have for a beginner. But it's also a very good reference book for experienced designers looking nostalgic for good old marker techniques.
Great for learning artists.......1999-12-08
This book effictively describes various ways and methods of using markers for illustration, and designing purposes (although mainly targeted toward designers, this shouldn't discourage you if you're an illustrator). A sampling of what you'll learn...
Materials, from the markers you should choose to the various kinds of papers available and how they affact your drawing. Application of markers, controling markers, and effective ways to represent shading and depth for oyur needs. Defining materials with marker: Chrome, Plastic, Glass, Leather, Vegetation, etc... the drawings are very nice. There is much more you'll learn through the pages of this book, these are just some of the highlights.
Unfortunately, I had to give it 4 stars instead of 5 due to the fact that it is rather outdated matieral-wise (markers have changed since 1983), and it is mainly targeted toward designers (this book would recieve 5 stars for the aspiring designer!). BUT, I learned a great deal from this book even as an illustrator / cartoonist, and it is very easy to incorporate what you learn from this book into illustration purposes like cartooning or figure drawing. I'd highly recommend this book for those who are looking to improve in markers, which admitily give your drawings a look that paint or colored pencils alone cannot achive.

Todd Murrison, The Teacher.......2001-08-15
Todd Murrison demonstrates a wonderful range of techniques for beginners and tackles basic layout for intermediate. As an accomplished graphic artist, Todd explores more graphic applications, than freedom of expression, which this medium can not be separated from. We're waiting for Todd to break the mold in his second book to see all that wonderful talent flurish. Although I do recommend this book as a good one for beginners!
Todd Murrison, The Man the Book.......2001-08-15
Todd captures the essence of an image with active strokes of confidence. His masculine perspective is unique. A body builder and artist is that unique combination. Personally I have found his talents are many and god given.
Reflected in these renderings in marker we see a glimps into this artists perception of art as media. Todd Murrison shows clear steps in utilizing this media. A must for any would be artist, and Todd Murrison fan!

Design Media is filled with ideas to help bring out the best in drawing and rendering-from developing sound skills and improving presentations to achieving particular effects.

* Contains 280 illustrations-including 200 in color-showing examples of all media types
Customer Reviews:
a rating in progress:not sure yet- but why am i not excited.......2001-08-31
I am not sure yet and want to give the book a more
serious look. Perhaps my mistake was to buy this
book at the same time i acquired Composite Drawing by
Uddin and Color Drawing by Doyle. The drawings and format
of these books instantly became well worn reference texts
for myself and students. I chose the Kasprisin book because
it presented a medium missing from the other books: watercolor techniques. I will give the prose a serious trial and i hope the book eventually proves to be a good resource too.
However, what bothers me is the book is sitting on my shelf and i am struck by the following realization: when it comes to a technique book, if i am not personally inspired by the sample drawings or paintings i am probably not going to be motivated to try to emulate the techniques. Please acknowledge this may be too shallow of a reaction and you may well find the book meets your needs.

"Until one morning in mid-November of 1959, few Americans--in fact, few Kansans--had ever heard of Holcomb. Like the waters of the river, like the motorists on the highway, and like the yellow trains streaking down the Santa Fe tracks, drama, in the shape of exceptional happenings, had never stopped there." If all Truman Capote did was invent a new genre--journalism written with the language and structure of literature--this "nonfiction novel" about the brutal slaying of the Clutter family by two would-be robbers would be remembered as a trail-blazing experiment that has influenced countless writers. But Capote achieved more than that. He wrote a true masterpiece of creative nonfiction. The images of this tale continue to resonate in our minds: 16-year-old Nancy Clutter teaching a friend how to bake a cherry pie, Dick Hickock's black '49 Chevrolet sedan, Perry Smith's Gibson guitar and his dreams of gold in a tropical paradise--the blood on the walls and the final "thud-snap" of the rope-broken necks.
Book Description
On November 15, 1959, in the small town of Holcomb, Kansas, four members of the Clutter family were savagely murdered by blasts from a shotgun held a few inches from their faces. There was no apparent motive for the crime, and there were almost no clues.
As Truman Capote reconstructs the murder and the investigation that led to the capture, trial, and execution of the killers, he generates both mesmerizing suspense and astonishing empathy.
In Cold Blood is a work that transcends its moment, yielding poignant insights into the nature of American violence.
Download Description
With the publication of this book, Capote permanently ripped through the barrier separating crime reportage from serious literature. As he reconstructs the 1959 murder of a Kansas farm family and the investigation that led to the capture, trial, and execution of the killers, Capote generates suspense and empathy.

Capote's Masterpiece Is Full Of Thrills, Suspense, And Incredible Prose.......2007-09-24
When Truman Capote's "In Cold Blood" was published in 1966, it became an international bestseller and was lauded by the critics. Now, over forty years later, "In Cold Blood" remains the crowning achievemt of Capote's career as a writer. Capote's skill as a journalist and natural talent as a writer combine to create the definitive American true crime book. Whether you prefer nonfiction or fiction, Capote's true account of mass murder and it's consequences is sure to please!
As Good as it Gets.......2007-09-19
In Cold Blood is incredibly well written. Unlike many of his short stories, the prose is clean and not overly adorned. Without moralizing, he simply tells the story of one of the most random and nonsensical murders of his time. In my opinion, Capote wrote one great book, and this is it.
A compelling read.......2007-08-23
Because I practice criminal law, I walk around in a world with stories like this one everyday. So I didn't really see the big deal until I finished reading Capote's In Cold Blood. Capote makes a nonfiction account read like fiction. That may not sound like much, but it impressed the hell out of me. Usually nonfiction has a dull feel to it. It just doesn't pop like fiction does. But Capote is able to cut right through that and make this story every bit as compelling as fiction without giving it a corny, Court-TV "true-crime" feel.
I don't get it.......2007-08-21
I'm disappointed- period. I truly feel as though the middle 200 pages could've been removed from this book and I would not have missed out on any importance, nor would I have noticed. I personally did not get much value out of this book. I wish I could have had a different experience.
I feel I have been forced to seek out reviews that explain some deep-seeded theme that was completely fabricated by some "scholarly" reviewer, which the author never initially intended. Maybe that would satisfy me.
A classic, certainly.......2007-08-20
And certainly every writer who is interested in writing narrative nonfiction should start right here, then compare everything else to this one.
Book Description
Murder. Not an intricately plotted "whodunit" or fiery passionate fury. But dirty, sad, disturbing actions from real people. That's what Truman Capote decided to use for In Cold Blood - his bold experiment in the realm of the non-fiction "novel." Following in that legacy is Capote in Kansas, a fictionalized tale of Capote's time in Middle America researching his classic book. Capote's struggles with the town, the betrayal, and his own troubled past make this book a compelling portrait of one of the greatest literary talents of the 20th century.
Customer Reviews:
Quite Bizarre.......2006-04-11
As an avid fan of the book "In Cold Blood" and the movie "Capote", I looked forward to reading this. I should have stuck to Gerald Clarke's biography. This was okay, although I don't think it advanced my knowledge of Capote, the crimes, the Clutters, or the killers. Nancy Clutter's utilization as a plot device was odd--I kept wondering what her two surviving sisters would have thought of this.
Eisner-Worthy? Maybe. (Warning: Contains Some Spoilers).......2005-08-18
Murder, ripped straight from the pages of Truman Capote's In Cold Blood, begins Capote in Kansas, the engaging work from writer Ande Parks and illustrator Chris Samnee. Based on the research period of Capote's "non-fiction novel," the story introduces the reader to Capote, the flamboyant, arguably-overconfident, writer who steps into a world of brutal homicide, centered around the deaths of four members of a prominent Holcomb farming family-Kansans Herb, Bonnie, Nancy, and Kenyon Clutter.
In his story, Parks takes the reader cyclically from death to death, filling it in with what perhaps is his strongest talent, the ability to create telling human relationships. It's not the believability of Capote as a socialite character that draws readers in, but rather his vulnerability. While it becomes difficult to believe some of Capote's actions (the naïve waltz into the police station, the expectation of assistance from the police) one does not question the more intimate moments of his life, especially not Capote's childhood. Capote's solid friendship with Harper Lee only reinforces the strength of this scene creating a relationship that foreshadows Capote's later one with Perry.
Still, for all the success of Parks' characters, one cannot help but find fault in Nancy Clutter, the ghost who seems no more than a device for sentimentality. While she might have been a powerful illustration of Capote's psychological struggle to unravel the history of the Clutter family, Nancy comes off more as a confidante and a contrivance to humanize Capote. It appears, at times, that Parks' may have intended Nancy to be something closer to the illustration of the struggle, but it never quite settles into that. This sentimentality goes on to haunt Parks' narration, especially in the scenes with Capote and Nancy in the rain, and Capote hugging Perry in prison.
Still, applause should certainly follow Parks' depiction of homosexual relationships. Not only does he shy away from overt stereotype, but in the letters and back-and-forthing between Capote and Jack, readers have the opportunity to see love. Parks does not dwell on Capote's infidelity either, acts which may not make for a likeable character, but nevertheless a believable one (Capote having had several relationships with arguably-heterosexual men). That he treats homosexuals as people, however, and not types exploitable for comic value is a testament to Parks' maturity as a writer.
And accompanying Parks' tale, Samnee lends his talents for stunning illustration. With careful attention to negative space, and a degree of control that would make Frank Miller proud, Samnee creates highly-detailed images with particular expertise at group scenes (the funeral, arrest of the suspects), parties, banquets, and landscapes. His depictions of anticipation, remorse, happiness, and sly wit are unquestionably authentic with his management of sequencing tracking the progression of emotion beautifully in scenes like Capote's childhood, Capote's advance at Perry, and at the story's conclusion, Nancy's beautiful dance into oblivion.
One encounters trouble, however, in scenes like Capote's seduction of the teacher, where, arguably, it would seem that Capote is making love to himself. The character differentiation simply isn't clear enough, as opposed to other points in the novel, which are crystal (Capote inspecting the Clutter home, the beginning murder scene). Though, Samnee should receive no fewer congratulations than Parks on his depiction of homosexual relationships, especially in the scene between Capote and the teacher. The kissing appears natural with the teacher showing just enough shame and apprehension one might expect from a small-town person concerned about the discovery of a secret. Only in a few places does the sequencing seem shaky, most notably when Capote attempts to demonstrate a handstand to Nancy, which results in him falling over, and knocking a phantom chair to the ground-a chair that seems to appear out of thin air just for the sake of one panel.
Overall, though, the work is successful, conveying powerful images to compliment the grim tale. Parks keeps the reader focused upon Capote without overloading them with information. Background history works smoothly into the plot, and Samnee is there to keep the horrors on the page bound in ink.
Capote Classic!.......2005-08-16
Capote in Kansas is a perfect companion piece to In Cold Blood. Ande Park's graphic novel parallels Capote's work providing interesting details and the inner most thoughts of the main character(s) while developing the supporting characters, showing how their lives are touched and how their lives touch the main character, yet carves its own path along the way.
This is a gorgeously illustrated novel with an eye catching cover. How Ande was able to get Chris Samnee is beyond me, I'm thinking he lost big to Ande in a poker match and this was the only way he could pay his debt.
Ande Parks has provided his readers with a hundred and twenty pages of solid writing with no wasted page or panel leaving the reader wanting another hundred and twenty.
I highly recommend Capote in Kansas. This graphic novel and its creators are definitely worthy of an Eisner nomination.

In Cold Blood - My thoughts on the book.......2004-03-31
After reading the book I have to say that it was a good book. It was full of action, suspense, and some gory scenes. The first half of the book excited me more than the second half, I found that after the murdering was over the book slightly lost appeal, though the plot thickening and suspense kept me reading. The fact that there really was a killing involving the Clutters made the book almost awkward to read, I felt like I shouldn't have been reading it because it was based on the murdering of the Clutters. The plot was very well thought through and I believe the book is written in a way that keeps the reader from putting it down.
I recommend this book to almost everyone excluding the younger people out there, the scenes were slightly graphic. For the most part, this book was a great read.
In Cold Blood very true to actual events.......2003-11-24
I had to read this book for my Criminal Law class since it is my minor and I was surprised by how much I liked it. Truman Capote did a wonderful job at relaying the events of the murders and the whole span of events involving the crime.
In the rural town of Holcomb,Kansas in 1959 The Clutter family was murdered by Dick Hickock and Perry Smith in hopes to steal a rumored 10,000 dollars the family had in a safe. They left the scene of the crime with a mere 40 dollars and a few items from the house. An old cellmate of Hickock's gave him away to the KBI and they were apprehended soon after. The book gives account of the trials they hold and they were eventually sentenced to death. Capote got to know these men who murdered the Clutters and gave a compelling account of true facts of the whole story.
I highly recommend this book to anyone. You don't have to be interested in law to appreciate this book. A very controversial book at a time when no one wrote of murders like this.
In Cold Blood.......2003-03-28
This book is pretty good, Its considered a Nonfiction book since its based on the killings of the Clutters, but Truman did make up some of this stuff too. I watched a video about In Cold Blood, lemme tell ya, this Truman guy has the weirdest voice ever, and he has the 2 male killers in the book constantly calling each other 'Honey' and stuff... Its a pretty good attention getter for about the first half, but the last half gets kind of boring when Dick and Perry are being questioned and all that jazz.

Book Description
Truman Capote and Harper Lee were children when they met. Twenty-five years later, Capote had taken New York's literary world by storm, while Lee struggled to put pen to paper and sweat out the story of her childhood in the same city.
They would reunite in the desolate plains of Kansas to create In Cold Blood. And they would start talk of an even greater mystery: What happened between them — and who really wrote To Kill a Mockingbird? How did two innocents from a backwoods Southern town achieve such fame, and why did they stop speaking to one another?
Kim Powers has conjured a death-bed confession from Capote, in which he picks up the phone to Harper Lee one last time to tell her is being haunted — a tale she doesn't believe, until she is forced to. What do the ghosts of the Clutters want, as they appear one by one to confess their secrets and their anger to the most unlikely mediums of Capote and Lee?
Capote in Kansas is an unforgettable "what might have been" — a fantasia of ghosts seeking resolve and revenge, and memories and regret for a past that was, that will never be again.

A True Crime Story told in a spellbinding work. Capote is a masterpiece of a story teller. This is the re-creation of the brutal slaying of the Clutter Family of Holcomb, Kansas - the Police investigation that followed - the capture, trial and execution of the two young murderers Richard Hickock and Perry Smith. It took Truman 6 years to write this book. It has been a great seller on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean. In 1965, at the time of this particular printing over 3,300,000 had sold in the U.S. alone. Capote has thrust the act of violence before the reader as if it were happening before his very eyes. This edition is complete and unabridged.

Customer Reviews:
RED means STOP not PASSION.......2006-08-03
This is an ideal book to the single ladies who want to avoid a divorce long before an engagement ring. Hillarious and witty comics illustrate that ... if it feels wrong to be with someone in your gut, and emotions of uncertaintly are overflowing, stay clear in the head and heart .... no excuses... and don't kiss the frog! There are no Prince Charmings or White Knights on White horses ... just the reality.
Disappointed.......2005-08-08
I was disappointed in the book because it was written in cartoon style with the text in bubbles. I felt it was on an elementary level and not appropriate for my teenagers - One 12th grader and one freshman in college. I do not feel like the book was worth what I paid for it.
How to flag the toads!.......2004-08-10
How's a girl to know if she's found her Prince Charming? How's she to know if she's kissing a frog instead? Yolanda Nave answers both these questions in Red Flags, a slim volume that outlines, "What every girl should look out for...."
Amusing drawings accompany each pointer, such as a girl trying to prop up a lopsided heart (signifying a one-sided relationship); or the page that explains a red flag is a girl's intuition trying to tell her she is about to make a bad move, which is accompanied by a drawing of a girl with a hobo on a bench.
Too often, girls ignore the red flags that come up in a relationship - warning signs that the relationship is headed for trouble - like when a boy tells a girl he doesn't drink or do drugs; his only weakness is "Girls, girls, girls!"
What else is sufficient for a girl to red flag a relationship? There's the boy who wants to borrow money from her, the boy who tries to tell her the hickey on his neck is a spider bite, a boy who does drugs, or a boy who treats her like dirt.
Nave's book clearly sends a message that many girls need to hear; that they should let their conscience be their guide and tune in to their intuition when it is trying to tell them that they are making a mistake. The book also shows girls how to make a checklist of good qualities that a boy must have, and the importance of having common interests in order for the relationship to be fulfilling, while encouraging girls to stop rationalizing or making excuses for their boyfriend or potential boyfriend. Instead, it offers good alternatives such as discussing the problem and trying to find solutions or, if that fails, ending the relationship.
Nave's book offers sound advice that can only help raise girls' self-esteem, telling them that everyone deserves someone special who loves them just the way they are and that finding someone who is right for them takes time.
Red Flags is small enough to fit into a purse or pocket, can be read in a matter of minutes and includes a page of red-flag stickers (in various degrees of unfurl to signify how serious the problem is) that can be placed on appropriate pages. The back cover also has a foldout flap that turns the cover into a mailing envelope to mail it to a friend.
Red Flags is a book that every girl or woman should buy or be given.
